CHAPTER FOUR
The afternoon went by quick enough. I'd told Bellatrix about the disastrous lunch when I had gotten to the office knowing it would be best to get it out of the way as soon as possible. She had been only too eager to hear about Snape and I could see the wheels turning in her head as she looked at the diary. "Don't bother," I warned her and shoved it firmly into my bag. She shrugged and gave me a few documents that needed my signature and walked off. There wasn't much more to do except answer a few calls so I dug out the diary and opened it up. It looked expensive and I could still smell the scent of leather coming from it. The pages were soft and seemed to melt beneath my fingers as I turned them. I flicked it to the front again and noticed a small insignia at the bottom. It was a castle with the word "Hogwarts" wrapped around it. Strange, I'd never heard of such a place and I was mildly intrigued about the company. So, I switched on the computer, let it load, launched google, typed in "Hogwarts" and pressed search. There was nothing. Odd, even the weirdest of things come up under google. I tried looking for the insignia but again came up empty. Now my interest was completely piqued. Why would a company not be listed on the net? There had to be something about it somewhere. I tried Wikipedia, Company Directories, everything I could think of. Finally, I tried Severus Snape. It was a long shot but I had nothing to lose. The computer whizzed and the page opened up onto a black screen with a full size insignia. Wow, it was truly impressive. It began to rotate to show a side view and a list appeared down the side of the screen. At the top was a picture of Severus sitting on a grand chair and a little bio under it saying that he was head of the Hogwarts Foundation.
"Hey Lily, you coming tonight?" Bellatrix asked poking her head through the door.
I looked up, noting the time and gasped, 17:00 already! "No, sorry Bellatrix. I've got something I need to do. Maybe tomorrow?" It was customary to have a quick drink after hours but with my schedule lately it had been impossible. I'd hoped tonight I would be able to go but I wanted to investigate this Foundation and maybe understand the man a little better. After all, I was going to be his Personal Assistant and knowing exactly who he was would give me an edge when dealing with him.
"Oh, okay then tomorrow and you can buy." She waved and left.
I turned the computer off, tidied my desk and checked my diary. Nothing too important until 9:00 AM, perfect. Switching off my light, I grabbed my bag and headed out. The streets had calmed a little, the umbrellas were out of sight and traffic, well still standing still, but it was rush hour. I ambled along the street, popping in at the local grocers to pick up something for dinner and continued on to my building. It was a tall, glass, masterpiece. An architects dream and if it hadn't been for the dodgy elevator rides it would be close to perfect for living in the city. There was a gym in the basement, a restaurant with a bar on a couple of the floors and a few scattered shops with exclusive clothing ranges. I guess it was like having a private shopping mall and I loved it, though my bank balance didn't. Taking a deep breath I stepped through the door and made my way to the elevator. It pinged open almost immediately and zoomed up to my floor. Funny how it contrasted with my need for it to hurry this morning. I got out on floor 23 and walked along to my door. There on the ground was a box, finely wrapped with a small gift tag sticking out. I looked closer. Written in calligraphy was my name and below it was a large elegant S.
I opened my door, picked up the box and went inside. My fingers fumbled briefly with the pretty bow as they tried to push the ribbon aside. As it slid to the floor I placed the box on the glass table and lifted the lid. Folded beautifully was the dress and coat. My hand shot to my heart as a smile stretched across my face. Picking up the dress, I held it against my body and twirled around. I ran to the bedroom, stripped off and slid the dress on. It fit like a glove. Crossing to the large standing mirror I gazed at my reflection and saw a little note inside the box that I hadn't noticed in my excitement to try the dress on. I crossed the room and picked it up.
Lily,
I will pick you up tonight at eight. Wear this.
Severus
I frowned, was there a function that I had overlooked? I grabbed my phone and checked Notes. Nope, nothing in there. Grabbing the diary from my bag, I quickly opened it up and flicked it to today's date. How had I missed that! There in bold large writing was Foundation - charity function 8pm. I looked at my watch, there was just enough time for a bath and to do my hair before I was to be picked up. Crossing to the bathroom, I stopped and switched on the music letting Mechanical People blast out Faith In The Will and continued on. As the bath filled with hot soapy bubbles I undressed and stepped in. It felt good to sink deep into the water and wash the aches and pains of today away. I closed my eyes briefly and sang along to the music. Eyes, deepest black stared back at me. I followed them down and found his soft lips, sneering, inviting, the hair dripping wet framing his manly face. My eyes shot wide. Closing them again I ducked under the water.
Washed, hair done, I got out and wrapped a large heated towel around my body. Thirty minutes to go. I poured a glass of wine, went to my bedroom and pulled on a pair of stockings and matching pink underwear. The dress was slung over the white wicker chair so I picked it up and stepped into it, feeling the softness of the silk material as it slid over my body. Just enough time to do my hair, I thought as I grabbed the french plait pins in preparation. I grabbed the the hairdryer, turned my head upside down and blasted. Five minutes later it was almost dry. I grabbed my hair into a low ponytail, twisted it up and over and began pinning it into place. Perfect, I thought as I checked it in the mirror and gave it a quick spritz. A moment later the door bell rang. I slipped my shoes on, grabbed my coat and went to answer it. Severus was standing with a pink rose in his hand. "For you my lady," he said handing it over.
"Thank you." I smiled, lifted the rose to my nose and sniffed it's delicate fragrance.
"Shall we?" he asked and proffered his arm. I tucked mine in his and let him lead me along the corridor and out to the awaiting limousine. He certainly was pulling out all the stops tonight, I thought. The chauffeur opened the door and waited till we had climbed in before closing it behind us. Severus turned to look at me as the driver got in and began driving away. "I need you to bid for me," he said earnestly.
"What?" I said half choking.
"As part of the fundraiser there is a male auction. One I would prefer not to be a part of, but I need to be seen to be doing my part and so tonight you will bid for me."
"How much should I bid?" I asked trying not to laugh.
"I don't care, just make sure you win!"
I nodded in agreement and stared out the window. The city had darkened and the lights were beginning to come on, illuminating the streets as we whizzed past. After a short drive we came to a pair of wrought iron gates. On either side were large hog statues. It looked fancy and I peered ahead. There lit up by spotlights was the castle. The picture online didn't do it justice. It was beautiful and elegant and I felt strangely out of place. The gates opened and we drove up the drive, parking in front of the steps that led into the main entrance. Severus opened his door, stood up and held out his hand for me to take. I grasped it gently with mine and let him lead me inside.
My eyes had lit up at the first sight. It was like a fairytale. "You like it?" he asked. I turned to face him and nodded silently. I doubt words would have formed if I had attempted to say anything. Everyone filing in looked so wonderful. The men were wearing black tuxedos and the women were in fancy dresses of all shapes and sizes. As we walked through a large ornate wooden doorway I could see a runway straight ahead. Severus rolled his eyes and led me towards it. "Here, let me," he said taking my coat from my shoulders. I shrugged out of it and waited for him to return from the cloakroom.
"Hi, I'm James," a dark haired man chirped beside me. "You look lost," he said proffering his hand.
"A little," I confessed, taking it.
"James, how nice of you to come," Severus said sneering at him, a look of pure loathing in his eyes. He threw his arm around my waist and led my away. "Come Lily, there are many people you should meet."
With the function fully under way I had met almost everyone. Some guy from a pharmaceutical company had slipped me his card. Tom Riddle blazed across the middle with his business details on the back. I had the strangest feeling that this was a man that I had to be wary of, though I had only met him tonight. I guessed it was to be expected that all kinds of people would be working the room even if it was a charity. A clink of glass sounded from the microphone stand on the catwalk drawing our attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for the annual male auction. Get your cheque books out and give a round of applause to our first contender, Sirius."
As everyone began to whoop, Sirius strode onto the catwalk. He was unruly looking, with long dark wavy hair and a mischievous grin. He winked to his appraising audience and turned on the catwalk. He lowered his head slightly and grinned up, giving him a seductive and dangerous quality. The bidding started at £50,000. The women were going wild for him and he knew how to work them. As the last bid closed on him at £500,000 I wondered just what the bidder expected him to do for her. Now I understood why Severus, I mean Snape, damn I had been using his first name all night and now I couldn't stop, felt so nervous about being in the auction. With man after man receiving big bids I hoped that he would get a decent offer, though I had to admit that if he treated others the way he treated me then they wouldn't be all that high.
James was next up on the catwalk. He smiled down at me briefly and then turned to the audience as Sirius had done. Instead of looking dangerous though, he looked cute and handsome. If I wasn't bidding on Severus I would gladly have raised my hand and bid, though with my bank balance I'd have stood no chance of winning but still, it would have been nice. Final offer for James came in at £250,000 to a woman with long blonde hair and a hooked nose. He didn't seem to mind. He jumped down and went willingly to her side.
The next person up was a tall, blonde, dominant looking man. Lucius and wow he must have been a model or something. I tried to recall if he had given me his card as I watched him strut down the catwalk. He stopped at the edge and clicked his cane down. The audience gave an audible sigh as he turned and strode back. To say his bid went through the roof would be an understatement. I hoped this would be an annual event that I would get to attend. All these fine men up for sale, I fanned myself.
Finally Severus strode on, he was more dashing than I had remembered seeing him and I threw my hand up, "£50,000," I blurted out. He smiled at me and peered around the room. Surprisingly, the bids were all significantly higher and I blurted, "£500,000," as the auctioneer was about to close the sale.
"Sold!" she bellowed into the mic.
I squealed with delight as I realized I had won. "He's mine! He's mine!" I screamed.
Severus leapt down and came to me. He eyed James once before grabbing me and lowering his head, kissed me hard and passionately as his arms wrapped tightly around my waist. "You didn't need to bid so high." He chuckled as he let go and stepped back. I blushed and tried to catch my breath as I looked deep into his eyes.
The auctioneer tallying up the sales and cheques gasped as she spoke one last time into the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to announce tonight's total. Hogwarts Foundation has raised £8,000,000. This money will go along way to helping the disadvantaged children. Thank you for your generosity, we look forward to seeing you again next year."
"Shall we?" Severus asked as he smiled and walked me out into the cool night air.
