They could feel the pulse of energy flow through the woods; the Centaurs were after all the guardians of the Forbidden Forest. The pulse wave of amber flew into them like a hot knife slicing through butter, the wave continued to flow outwards until it hit the tree line and dissipated. When the glow was gone the horsemen were left with a tug at the center of them, they looked at one another and then up at the stars to try and understand what had happened; Agapitus the herd’s leader looked over to his son Ahasuerus.
“Go son, and follow the pull. Protect what you find for it is a gift from the Mother. I see it now in the stars how I have missed it for this long I do not know. Go!” he shouted suddenly and pointed out into the forest.
Ahasuerus nodded to his father and let the pull in his chest guide him to where his father said to go. His herd brothers followed after with him, for they all felt the pull now in them, and the need to protect whatever it was that called to them so.
The herd thundered through the forest twigs snapping under huff as they ran as fast as their four legs could carry them to where their hearts were pulled. Ahasuerus started to slow down as the herd neared a small clearing. He looked down as they came to a slow walk and noticed small blue flowers here and there. As they walked up to the clearing the blue flowers had turned into a thick blanket beautiful with the sweetest smell.
Ahasuerus and his herd brothers stopped at the edge of the trees looking into the clearing down at the sleeping girl with golden curls soundly asleep peacefully in the middle. Aurelius the youngest warrior in the group and Ahasuerus youngest brother looked to him.
“She is beautiful..” he whispered to his brother.
“She is zoroastres, she is silvestra!” he breathed in awe. The herd gasped when they heard the Great Warrior say this for every youngling grew hearing the story of the Mother’s daughter that would one day come and she would be of the forest and save them all from the shadow that had descended.
“Inanna, she has come!” he finally said to the heard around him. It was at that moment they heard the footsteps of wizards approaching. They spread out and took cover to the best positions to protect the Daughter. Ahasuerus kept his place in the front of the clearing while his brothers disappeared to keep guard behind the trees. The Great Warrior stood tall as he saw the wizard emerge through the trees; they had not yet noticed him so he took the time to observe them.
The taller of the two was the dark professor that worked up in the castle. They would follow him often when he would wonder into the forest to go meet his false snake lord. He was not to be trusted. The shorter of the duo was unfamiliar to Ahasuerus. Where as dark as the professor was the smaller of the two seemed to have a head of white blonde hair and was his total opposite. He was younger and Ahasuerus could see one of the wizard school’s crests on his robe. “So he is a student.” He thought to himself. The wizards were within ten meters of the clearing when they finally seemed to notice him standing there, the dark one stopped and stood in front of the blonde one.
“What is your business in the forest?” Ahasuerus addressed the older wizard.
To say that Professor Severus Snape was shocked to suddenly have his path blocked by the centaur would’ve been an understatement. The centaurs normally kept to themselves preferring to leave wizards to their own worries, unless they were wreaking havoc in their forest. It was most curious indeed.
Flashback to the Castle:
The small alarm in Headmaster Dumbledore’s chamber went off the second Hermione had stepped foot out of the castle. The headmaster had no way of knowing at that moment that it was the Head Girl that had been out of the castle, the alarm only told him that a student was out of bed and on the grounds. An alarm that he had created since the Dark Lord had resurfaced to help keep wandering students safe.
He walked down into his office over to his floo to call on Professor Snape, after a quick word the professor stepped through into the Headmasters off to see what it was he needed at this ungodly hour.
“What is so important Albus that it could not wait until breakfast?” The agitated professor said as he pinched the bridge of his nose also whipping the sleep from his eyes.
“The alarm went off, a student has left the castle grounds, go and get the head boy and girl and go find them for me will you.” Dumbledore said tiredly has he sat behind his desk.
“How on earth am I to know where this dunderhead has ran off too?!” Severus said with a tense voice.
At that moment Nearly Headless Nick flew into the Headmasters office, “Pardon the intrusion Headmaster. But as I was floating up in the astronomy tower when I happened to notice a figure walking into the Forbidden Forest; I thought that it was curious and you did tell us to report anything strange.” He said to him as he transparently floated in front of them both.
“Well there you go Severus.” Dumbledore said to the moody potions master. Severus sighed deeply and turned on his heel with a flourish of robes billowing behind him as he walked out of the Headmasters office heading toward the Head’s dorm.
The professor walked down the dark stone corridors until he can to the sleeping portrait of the mermaid that slumbered on a rock that guarded the head’s dorm. He taped lightly on the frame and the mermaid stirred and sleepily looked at the potions master as he said the password and allowed him entry into the common room. He noticed the fire in the hearth had almost died; waving his hand toward it the fire flared to life and lit up the room. He walked up to the steps to the Head Boys chamber first, sharply rapping on the door he twisted the knob and entered the room walking over to the bed and ripped the covers off the boy who slept under them.
The Head Boy had stirred at the door opening and was rudely thrust into the world of consciousness when the covers were so rudely taken from his body as the cold set in.
“Get up Godson! One of you blithering idiots has left the castle and wandered into the forbidden forest and now I’ve been woken up from my rest to come collect you and Miss Granger to go and get the dunderhead!” He said to him as he walked over to his dresser and started opening draws throwing a shirt and pants to the boy still seated in bed.
Draco got up and began putting his clothing on as he looked to his Godfather who stood in the doorway to his room.
“Well are you going to go wake up Granger the same way you have me?” he said with a small snarl as he scowled over at his Godfather fastening the clasp to his outer robes.
Snape chuckled darkly at the thought but shook his head in the negative turning around as Draco followed closely behind him. They walked across the balcony that over looked the common room to the Head Girls door when the professor notice that her door was slightly ajar. Looking back at Draco who looked from the door to his Godfather shrugging his shoulders in confusion, Snape walked up to the door placing his hand against it and slowly pushing it open.
They both stood in the door way and looked into the room to see an empty bed where the Head Girl should have been slumbering. The professor walked into the room and turned once in a circle stopping to face his Godson;
“Well Draco I think we might have found our wondering dunderhead, our very own Head Girl.” He said with a smirk.
“Why would Granger wonder into the Forbidden Forest in the middle of the night? The queen of following the rules breaks the biggest one?”
“Yes. It does seem odd doesn’t. Well lets go find her bring her to Dumbledore and figure out why she decided it was a good night to take a stroll through the Forbidden Forest.” He said as he stocked out of the Head Girls chambers and down the stairs to the portrait as he opened it Draco bringing up the rear the Mermaid called out to him.
“Don’t be too angry with the daughter professor, she needed the Mother’s guidance.” She said as she stretched on her rock and turned over going back to sleep.
Severus looked to Draco whose eyebrows were pinched in confusion at the mermaid’s cryptic words and looked back at him. They shrugged at one another and turned away from the portrait and made their way down the hall to the front doors of the castle, when they reached the massive oak doors the saw that one of them was slightly open, evidence of Granger’s exit.
They walked down the large stone steps onto the plush grass of the lawn in front of the school and headed towards the forest. Their journey had been silent until Draco spoke up about the curious situation they seemed to be in.
“Why would Granger wonder off into the forest, she is never one to break the rules, and what on earth was that mermaid talking about?” Draco said quietly into the dark night.
“I have no clue Draco. What goes on in the minds of teenage witch’s that drives them from their beds in the middle of the night into a dangerous forest is beyond my realm of understand. And I’m quite thankful for that!” he finished snappily at his Godson.
They were twenty meters from the tree line when they stopped watching as an amber wave suddenly came from somewhere in the forest. Both drew their wands and took up a battle stance but when the wave of amber hit the tree line it didn’t continue past it, but dissipated into nothingness and the forest was dark again like nothing had happened.
“What the fuck was that!” Draco yelled at Severus.
“Language Draco!” he hissed, “and I have no idea, I’ve never seen anything like that before. Come on we must find Miss. Granger!” he said as he continued more quickly into the forest now far more worried about the foolish know it all and what was happening inside the dark woods.
They had walked deep into the forest, Draco prattling on softly about the amber glow and still questioning why Granger would get outta bed and come here when Severus notice the centaur standing ahead of them blocking their path.
“What is your business in the forest?” Ahasuerus addressed the older wizard.
To say that Professor Snape was shocked to suddenly have his path blocked by the centaur would’ve been an understatement. The centaurs normally kept to themselves preferring to leave wizards to their own worries, unless they were wreaking havoc in their forest. It was most curious indeed.
“I’m on school business centaur, and it is none of yours.” Severus said as he fingered his wand.
Ahasuerus tensed and stepped forward, arms falling to his sides as his hands curled into hard fists. His whole torso seemed to expand fiercely showing how large of a threat he truly was.
“You are in my forest wizard, so you will answer my question.” He growled at the potions master. “Now I will not ask you a third time, what is your business in our forest?” he finished relaxing just slightly.
Severus was no fool, centaurs were brave creatures and fierce warriors that were not to be trifled with or have their threats taking lightly. He look calmly at him and lowered his hand from his wand, it wouldn’t do to get in a scrap with a centaur in the forest, this was their turf and he would never hear the end of it from Albus.
“My name is Professor Severus Snape, I’m here on business from Headmaster Dumbledore. He has sent me to collect a student that has wondered into the forest, you wouldn’t happen to of seen her would you?” the professor said noticing how the centaur seemed to tense when he mentioned the last part.
“Her name is Hermione Granger, she is the Head Girl and she seems to have come into the forest. I would be grateful to you if you might know her location?” Ahasuerus had taken a small step to the left when he had walked toward the wizard a few moments before not realizing that he was no longer blocking Inanna from the wizards view.
Draco and Severus had been so focused on the centaur that Draco didn’t notice the little flowers that had suddenly appeared until he happened to look down and discover the strange small blue flower that stood next to his boot. As his eyes continued forward he noticed that the flowers began to grow thicker until his eyes finally looked pasted the horseman in front of them into the clearing behind him where he notice her lying on the blanket of blue.
“Granger!” Draco said as he tried to make his way to her only to be pulled back by his Godfather.
“What’re you doing!” he said suddenly feeling the need to make sure she was alright, to protect her. She looked different he noticed, everything was basically still the same the heart shaped face with soft creamy skin, same button nose with those few freckles across the top, down to her fully rosy lips. But there was something, it was like her skin almost glowed and her hair was lighter he noticed. It seemed to be golden now instead of the light brown it used to be.
It was then that he noticed that they had been surrounded by a dozen hard looking centaurs all looking on edge at his attempt at moving closer to the clearing.
“You will not touch the Daughter!” Ahasuerus said to them, “you are not to be trusted wizard! You fall to your knees for the snake lord! Inanna will go nowhere with you!” pulling a long curved sword from behind his back, he beat it once against his chest saying, “We serve the Mother and the stars, we are the protectors, and you shall not go near her!”
Severus and Draco pulled out their wands preparing for a fight, both knowing full well that they were outnumbered, even if they didn’t have wands, one centaur alone was hard to deal with and they were facing a dozen that looked ready to kill. It was then that the group heard a soft moan come from the clearing; they all turned to see Hermione starting to stir from her slumber.
She slowly sat up and stretched her arms above her head enjoying the feel of her muscles stretching under her skin releasing the tension she felt. She still had her eyes closed enjoying the new sensation of life that flowed through her, she sighed when the wind swirled around her whispering to her “Open your eyes Inanna.”
She smiled softly and did as she was told, slowly opening her eyes she looked down at the blanket of small blue flowers she had been sleeping on and smiled. It was odd, it was almost like she got see the amber glow of life circulating through all of the tiny little blooms. She smiled has she looked up and stifled a scream, there in front of her just beyond the clearing stood what must have been a dozen centaurs, Professor Snape, and Draco Malfoy.
“What’s going on?” she said but no one responded.
They had watched as she sat up and stretched out her arms above her head; voices and breath caught in the centaur’s and wizard’s throats as they looked on at her. The wind had whipped past them all into the clearing swirling around the girl still seated on the ground. She smiled and bowed her head to closely inspect the flowers that were all around her. Then after what seemed like a life time she finally looked up at them and heard their combined gasps as she attempted to sooth her own startled heart. She asked her question again and it was the Head Boy that finally managed to say something, though what he said only confused her more.
Draco’s jaw dropped open slightly as he locked eyes with Hermoine. Staring back at him were no longer the light honey brown eyes of the Head Girl, but eyes that glowed a rich bright amber color. Her eyes pulled at something deep inside of Draco, something he didn’t understand. They pulled at his soul like a moth is drawn to a flame.
“Your eyes Granger,” he finally managed to putter out which was more than the rest could manage at the moment; “they’re beautiful!”
