Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Okay, here's the next installment of this little ditty. How do you like it so far?
Christopher: Good Guessing. I'll give you one hint: He wouldn't have had the balls, otherwise. The power of the Minister is not in question, just the abuse of said power. A Minister must be above and beyond such things.
Green_eye_lover: There I got the d out. The law nullified all marriages, and now they'll need to be checked before they are restored. Won't Arthur be surprised when they don't all go back the way he thought they would. And the solution may just muck things up a bit worse. Eat up, we're a long way from desert
unneeded: How light can a family be, that uses a Dark curse against their enemies in order to keep it from exposing them? I have long felt that the Weasley family is too 'good' to be believed. The Malfoys, in turn, are too 'dark' for me. Now, I have evened up the scales a little, and let the fan-fictioning flow!
Moodysavage: Okay, here you go!
Janna: Wow! That's a lot of questions. I wish I could answer them, but that would sort of negate the reason for writing a story, right?
Chapter Four: The Moments of Truth
Harry dropped his bag and sat down, watching Ginny and Oliver the entire time. "Where's James?" he asked.
Ginny lowered into a chair, looking around and feeling ill-at-ease. "He's with Mum and Dad." she said with a sigh. "I - - We needed to talk to you. How much have you heard since you've come back?"
"Ginny, I dropped off Malfoy's vase, and came right here. I haven't heard anything." Harry admitted exasperatedly.
"There's been an official act of the Ministry. It seems that my father - - - The Minister has nullified all marriages." Ginny said with a sneer.
"Harry," Oliver began. "The law went into effect early this morning and it's been wrecking families all over Britain. Those who wish to be reunited, have to prove that they are truly in love. It's done by a purification ritual and it's very precise."
Harry looked between them and his brows came together. "You don't want to go through it, do you?" he asked her.
"It's just that, it's just I don't want to put you through it. I do care for you, but . . ."
"But you don't love me? You love . . . him?" Harry asked.
"Yes." Ginny said carefully.
Harry rose and picked up his pack, putting it back on his shoulder without breaking eye contact. "Get out of my house, and take your lover with you. I can't stop you, since we appear to be . . . since we're not married, so go. I'm going to get my son!" When Ginny hesitated, he barked. "Out!" and Oliver led her away.
Harry dropped his pack again and fell back into his chair. He wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn't come. He felt numb.
Bill sent Hermione home, gathered up his babies and tried to get them to sleep. They were worried about their mother, as best they could be, given their young ages, and were restless. It took a few hours, but finally, at around midnight, the last was asleep and Bill had time to process.
Hermione had explained the law, its effect and what was to happen next, this she'd gotten from Fred, when he'd called earlier to tell her that it had hit between he and Angelina, broke up Percy and Audrey, and even caught Neville and his contract wife, Millicent. It was driving families to reevaluate their lives and children were feeling it as well. A well-balanced home was no longer a stable place in England.
Bill was no fool, and he knew that his marriage had been rocky before he left. He assumed that Fleur was waiting until he could prove his love for her, but Hermione's description of her before she left, gave him new doubts. "She acted like a veela searching for its mate." the girl had said and Bill leaned back on his couch. He drew a deep breath and sighed.
"Great Grandfather Castor, what have you done?" he whispered.
A faint voice answered from the back of his mind. "Leave it be, or face the consequences." and Bill knew what had caused his father to enact the law.
By the time Bill had begun putting his children to bed, Draco Malfoy had arranged for his parents to be among the first to be evaluated using the purification ritual. His arguments ranged from them being forced to live together by their sentence, to the way it would hurt his family if the marriage was deemed un-repairable. What didn't work with some, swayed the others. The Malfoys would be purified first thing in the morning and Draco spent the rest of the night planning something more.
He'd had it with the ineptness of the Minister and now he would take the steps needed to oust the man. If no one else would fight for their world, he would do it.
As soon as his parents, whose love was never in doubt to him, were reinstated as the couple they had been, Draco Malfoy would make the announcement. He was running for Minister of Magic, and would fight against the man who had sent all of England, even the entire British land, into an upheaval. He would expose the man for his acts and the reasons behind them, and then he would try to settle the Wizarding world, fix the problems that had divided them for centuries and bring peace.
He paced his office, working out his strategies and making plans for their implementation, when Lucius came to the door. Draco stopped for his father, and the older man came in. "Bill Weasley and Harry Potter arrived today. They delivered our property and a little something else."
Draco stared at the parchment in his father's hand, reaching out tentatively to take it. "What is it?" he asked.
"The answer to the curse. The reason that we've been trapped in a family tree with only one branch. We thought as much, but now we know why?"
Draco read the letter, looked up and waited for his father.
"You mother and I want to add to the line. It's not too late, with the aid of youthenizing poitions and fertility charms. We've already brewed them, but want to wait until the marriage can be restored. If we can bear another child, we may have to leave it to you to raise, but we will have done the impossible, and it will be worth it."
"Nonsense. You've already proved there's nothing impossible. You survived the reign of the Dark Lord."
"Not without costs. We nearly lost you, Son. I hope never to go through anything like that again." Lucius put his hand on Draco's shoulder and smiled weakly. The younger Malfoy returned it and his father patted the same shoulder. "I've got to get back to your mother. She's worried, and needs me."
"Yes." Draco agreed, but before Lucius had returned through the door, he called out. "Father? I've decided to enter the political arena. I'm going to try to fix things. I'll do it right, you understand?"
Lucius nodded and exited.
James was asleep in his own bed, his arms no longer clinging to his father's neck and his eyes not filled with condemnation and accusal. Harry had poured himself a cup of firewhiskey and taken a shower, relaxing in his office and staring at the clock on his wall, when a knock was heard on his door, even as the wards warned him of an intruder at their edges. "Damn!" he said, rising to his feet and grabbing his wand. He transformed his bathrobe into daytime robes and put down his glass. "Who would show up this late at night?" he asked himself before going to answer it.
His wards didn't tell him the identity of the intruders, but he had set up a peephole in the door and now as he looked through it, he shook his head. He threw the door open and stood staring at Malfoy, where he waited for Harry. "May I come in, Potter? I have an offer for you."
Harry stepped back and waited as Draco entered his home and peeled off his outer cloak. Harry took it and hung it on a peg near the door. He led the blond to his study and offered him a drink, which was politely refused, and a seat. Draco sat, leaned forwards and stared at Harry, who had returned to his abandoned chair.
Silence reigned for all of seven heartbeats, then Draco looked up, caught Harry's eyes and said, "I wanted to thank you and to apologize."
Harry said nothing, waiting for his old nemesis to continue, then he reached out and picked up his discarded glass. "You're welcome, and for what?"
Draco smiled, a short release of air telling Harry he'd found the comment amusing, then he regained his serious face. "Thank you for returning our family's property, for breaking our curse, for defeating the Dark . . . Voldemort, and for saving my life, on every occasion you did so. Apology, is . . . I am sincerely sorry for each and every time that I have insulted, hexed, injured or provoked you, from the moment we met in Madame Malkins, up to the day that you came to my home to return my wand." and he was silent as Harry processed this.
Harry downed his whiskey, put the cup on top of his desk and tilted his head, "Why?" he asked with in an airy whisper, "Why now?"
Draco's smile was wider, and his brows rose to reach for the fringe of his white gold hair, "Because I am free. We're free. I mean, we're still trapped in our house, but that's no hardship, compared to before. You have done so much for my family, and continue to do so, and I can't begin to show my appreciation. That's why I hesitate to ask for one more favor."
"A favor? What kind of favor can I do? I have no sway with the Wizangamut, no matter what the papers say. I can't get your sentence . . ."
"No! No, that's not what I wanted. I understand the conditions of our parole. I wanted to . . . I wondered if you would support my running for public office?" Draco asked. "I would understand if you declined."
"Public office? What office?" Harry asked, already certain of the answer he would recieve.
