Hermione dried her tears. “What now?”
“Now,” Draco said softly as he scooped up the black box with the necklace in it. “We go find Melody and ask if we destroy this like a horcrux.”
They released all the wards that Draco and Melody had put up and set off to find her classroom, only they had no clue where it was. Melody had met them at the front door and walked them directly to Severus’s office. After a few moments of wandering around, they heard the deep booming voice of Severus reprimanding someone for chopping an ingredient incorrectly.
Draco chuckled. “Ah, now that brings back memories. I bet he can tell us where she is.”
“If he doesn’t hex us into next week for interrupting his class.”
“That’s a risk we’ll have to take ma chérie.”
“Stop that!” Hermione smacked Draco in the stomach. “It makes me want to shag you right here in the hall.”
Draco grinned and knocked on the potion master’s door.
“Enter.” Severus’s tone was terse.
“Pardon us father,” Draco drawled smoothly. “We were just a bit lost.”
“Did you need help finding your way out?” Severus put down his glass stirring rod and walked over to them.
The class of what looked like sixth years immediately started whispering to each other.
“Snape has a kid?”
“He doesn’t look anything like him.”
“I think that’s a good thing. He’s gorgeous.”
“Think they’re both his kids?”
“Nah, she’s way too pretty.”
“Silence!” Severus bellowed.
“Actually, we were looking for Melody. We just had a question to ask her before we left.” Draco was trying not to laugh at the confused children.
“What kind of question?” Severus narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
Hermione walked up and pointed to his temple. “May I?”
Severus nodded and bent down a bit so she could reach him. His eyes fluttered as she entered his mind and then brought him into hers so he could see their conversation with Harry. She backed out as gently as she could.
Severus trembled a bit but managed to get a hold on himself. “Very well. She’s-“
“Oi!” Draco yelled, threw up a shield around a cauldron, and pushed the kids out of the way with a burst of magic. “Chop the dandelion, not pulverize!”
The cauldron exploded spectacularly just as he finished yelling. The entire classroom shrieked as the contents flew against the sides of the shield and slid down to the floor in sickly green lumps. Draco released the shield when it was finished and watched dispassionately as the entire table collapsed.
“Stevenson!” Severus barked. “Clean this up! That is two demerits for not reading the instructions and detention with Mr. Haggis tomorrow night!”
“Yes sir,” a freckle faced boy answered meekly, his face aflame.
“Everyone else clean up! It’s obvious that your last professor did not care whether you knew the difference between cut and pulverize so we will go back to the basics,” Severus huffed and then turned to Draco and Hermione. “Thank you. Now, Melody’s classroom is three doors down on the left. Be warned. She still likes to play with dolls.”
Draco grinned. “I think we can handle that. Thanks father.” He frowned at the class who were now trying to vanish the contents of their cauldrons. “Try not to get yourself blown up. Since when do students vanish potions?”
“Everyone stop this instant!” Severus yelled and almost smirked as everyone in the class immediately froze. He still had it alright. “You do NOT vanish a potion in such a volatile state as this. Take it over to the sink and dump it out.”
Hermione bit back a giggle as she followed Draco out of the classroom. She could still hear Severus barking out orders and handing out whatever demerits were like candy. He was just as she remembered him, fierce, snarky, and scary as hell. It was an effective teaching method though. Potions was a very dangerous subject and required full focus.
“Well that was fun.”
Hermione snorted. “How did you know what was going on anyway?”
Draco shrugged. “While you were in his mind, I looked on the board and realized they were brewing a stomach calmer. Then I looked over and saw that Stevenson kid just mashing those damned dandelions haphazardly and knew what was about to happen.”
“You’re a hero,” Hermione chuckled.
“I am a man who doesn’t like something that looks like cat sick on his shoes…or his wife,” Draco growled and started walking a bit faster.
Hermione could only shake her head. Draco hated being thought of as noble or a hero. He simply had a job and did it. He had changed so much from the bully who wanted all the attention. Now he was perfectly content to sit back and let someone else take the credit, fewer eyes that way. There was nothing more he wanted to do than to keep their secret quiet, including fame and glory. Even the children didn’t know exactly what was going on, only that their parents were very powerful. Well, that was going to change.
Draco knocked on the door Severus had told them was Melody’s. Her southern lilt answered, bidding them entrance. He walked in to see a bunch of scowling students. Curious, he looked up front and almost burst out laughing. Two faceless, sexless dolls were lying on the desk.
“Hey you two!” Melody was grinning from ear to ear. “He done already?”
“He’s returned to do some more digging,” Draco said softly as he walked over to her. “We need to talk.”
“Uh oh,” Melody said flatly. She raised her chin so she could look directly into his eyes. “Go on then.”
Draco made the connection this time, relaying all the information they’d discussed. Hermione watched as the woman went deathly pale. As Draco pulled out of her mind, she raced over and caught Melody before she hit the ground.
“Son of a bitch.” Melody pulled herself up and kicked the desk in anger. It shuddered under the pressure. She cursed a blue streak and hopped around on one foot for a moment before sitting down and rubbing her battered toes.
“That was stupid,” Hermione growled and yanked her boot off, examining her now rapidly swelling toes. She cast a few charms to fix the broken bones and heal the bruises. “Better?”
“Much,” Melody sighed. “I guess if you’re going to be an idiot and break your toes, it’s best to do it in front of a healer. Anyway, the answer to your question is yes. It works the exact same way… or well, you know what I mean. Take it to the Ranch and do it there in the back forty. There should be enough room. I want to see it when you’re done though.”
“Thanks!” Draco said and hugged her.
“You really want to thank me?” Melody had an evil glint in her eye.
Draco eyed the dolls warily. “I think that goes beyond thanking.”
“Oh come on.” Melody threw her arm around him and led him over. “You two were the very best.”
“It’s been years,” Hermione protested weakly.
Melody snorted. “Cowards.”
“That’s blackmail,” Draco growled.
Melody shrugged. “So I’m a Slytherin at heart. What can I say?”
“You owe us?” Draco raised an eyebrow.
“I think you better remember who owes who at this juncture.”
“Damn it,” Draco hissed. She was right. They owed her for the trip to St. Mungo’s. “Where’s the music?”
Melody squealed and clapped her hands. “Terrific. Now class, pay attention. This is Draco and Hermione Malfoy. They were two of my best students. They have agreed to give a demonstration on how the dolls work. You will show them respect. Any snickers or rude commentary will earn you demerits, detention, and a red hot hex on your rear. Am I clear?”
The class nodded as one.
“Good. Now, the first step is to take control of the doll. I’ll cast the spell for you but these two already know it. Once cast, you have total control of the doll. It responds to pure will and intent. Draco, Hermione, if you’ll take your dolls?”
Draco rolled his eyes and made the connection with his doll. He changed it into a miniature of him dressed in simple trousers and a button up. Hermione did the same, her doll wearing a simple black dress with its hair up. They made the dolls stand up and bow and curtsey to one another.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” Melody cooed. “The concept is simple. They intended for the dolls to look as they do and their will changed them as well as caused them to stand up. They can manipulate the dolls anyway they want.
The class burst out laughing as Draco made his give her an American one finger salute behind her back.
“You honestly believe I didn’t see that?” Melody quirked an eyebrow. “What are you, twelve?”
Draco snorted and made the doll salute her the right way instead.
“Smart ass.” Melody shook her head and continued. “The next step is harder and yet easier. You can make the doll mimic your very own movement. It takes concentration to maintain the connection with the doll as well as move. Dancing requires concentration as well so not only do you not step all over your partner, but so you don’t trip over your own feet as well. The third step is to be ready for an attack while doing this. You’ll see it all together here in just a second.”
“You’d better not attack us like last time.” Draco’s eyes narrowed.
Melody’s eyes widened in shock. “I wouldn’t dare. I’ll send something harmless, promise.”
Draco stared at her for a few minutes before shaking his head. “I should hope so. Any funny business and I’ll hex you flat on your arse.”
Melody smirked. “I’d like to see you try.”
“You’re on,” Draco growled. “Tonight?”
“Can’t. I’m going to knock your father’s block off.”
“Tomorrow then,” Draco said.
“Tomorrow it is.” Melody grinned and then tapped her wand in the air. A fast paced salsa sounded out in the room. She motioned for them to start.
Taking a deep breath, Draco spun his wife out and then back in. Their footwork was flawless, just like it had been in the days when they were just teenagers and training with the dolls to get a better hold on their bond. They spun, dipped, and even did a few lifts, lost to the music and enjoying themselves. The dolls didn’t falter once. They didn’t even notice Severus slip in and complain that Melody had made the entire school privy to the music instead of just her class. Every now and then, Melody would shoot a harmless tickling jinx their way which they batted away like a gnat.
Draco dipped Hermione all the way to the floor at the end and jumped when the entire classroom burst into loud applause and whistling and hooting. Shocked, he pulled Hermione up and motioned for her to take a bow. She did so shyly and stepped back.
“Perfect as always.” Severus’s deep voice caused them to spin around. He gave them his patented smirk and showed himself out the door.
“Why was father here?” Draco asked.
“Oh that.” Melody waved her hand away. “I got a bit carried away with the music. Everyone got to hear it, not just us.”
Hermione couldn’t help but giggle. “Well, Hogwarts seemed to take a liking to it. Maybe Salem will as well.”
“I doubt it,” Melody snorted. “This school is as sterile as an examination table.”
“Yes but for how long?” Draco purred. “Well, we’ve got to be off. Behave!”
“Who me?” Melody gave them an innocent look and then a devilish grin before telling them how to get out.

“Draco, are you sure there’s enough room out here for this?” Hermione was looking around the back forty of the Ranch, doubt clear on her face.
“I’m sure.” Draco kissed her cheek and motioned for her to stand back. “Hold a shield over the grass, okay?”
Hermione nodded and walked all the way to the edge of the clearing. She put a flat shield up, one that would withstand even fiendfyre to keep the grass from charring to a crisp. It wouldn’t be good if they burned the Ranch down. She tamped down her nervousness and watched as Draco levitated the necklace out of the black box. He didn’t want to risk touching it. He set it down on the grass and stepped back a couple dozen feet.
Draco took a deep breath. It had been a very long time since he’d cast fiendfyre specifically and not just a wall of flames. He knew he could still do it, but each time was just as unnerving as the last. Memories of being locked in a dark room by his father and ordered to cast the curse or else flooded his mind. They were unavoidable since they were the source of his power. He knew that if he could do this as a scared child, he could do it as a fully trained and ultimately more powerful adult. He lifted his hands, palms out towards the necklace and cast the spell. The piece of jewelry put up no fight, unlike any of the horcruxes. This one seemed resigned, almost happy that its life was almost done. When it was released from the necklace, a loud shriek sounded out followed by a faint ‘thank you.’ He fell to his knees as the spell broke, unable to shake the feeling that he’d just killed another person.
Hermione ran up and threw her arms around him. “You set her free sweetheart. She thanked you.”
“I know,” Draco croaked. “I know. I just…I wish we could have saved her.”
“Me too.” Hermione held him tightly and they both shed tears for the fact that they weren’t fast enough. What good was being all powerful if you couldn’t save everyone?

“Very nice Mr. Basil.”
Melody smiled at the shy boy who had his dark brown hair hanging over his sky blue eyes. He was strikingly handsome, thin yet muscled, but that wasn’t what drew her eye to him. It was the aura that surrounded him, a perfect match with a certain blond headed witch with golden colored eyes. It was odd because someone as perfectly balanced as she was didn’t need a match and yet, his aura complimented hers in every way, including the card marking him as her soul mate. Yes, Colton Basil would be a great match for Ara Malfoy. He was extremely powerful, on the verge of phenom power but you could never tell. He seemed to have strict discipline, only using exactly the amount he needed to cast. He’d just finished the first exercise with his doll flawlessly.
“Miss Tottery, you did excellent as well.”
She’d placed the timid looking blond with Colton on purpose. Her aura matched his. They weren’t related, she could tell, but they had the same level of power. Scorpius would be a fine mate for her. She made it a note to look up Lizzy Tottery’s file as well. Lizzy reminded her so much of Harmony as a child it was almost painful. Lizzy was so timid, afraid of her own shadow. When the doll lifted from the desk, she was sure Lizzy was going to pass out. Curious about the reaction, she’d slipped into the girl’s mind. What she found there made her boiling angry, to the point that she had to turn around and place a glamour on her eyes to hide the indigo flare up. She was heavily abused at home. The only thing that kept Melody from flying off the handle was that the abuse wasn’t sexual. Still, she was going to have a chat with Mr. Tottery…very soon.
“Please return to your seats. It looks like we have time for one more pair.”
Melody glanced at the clock to double check and then commenced looking around the room. Her eye caught on signatures outside that made her halt. She hadn’t seen them since the war at Hogwarts and it made her blood freeze. They were supposed to be in Azkaban. She ran to grab her mirror, flipping it open and practically yelling for Severus.
“What in the bloody hell?”
“Death Eaters!” Melody almost shrieked and dropped the compact as the door exploded. She jumped across the desk and threw a shield across the students to spare them the debris. “Everyone back and under the desks!”
The students didn’t even hesitate, every single one of them stampeding to the back in terror. They stacked desks up to hide behind and peeked out from behind them. No one dared to breathe a word.
Melody growled and held her wand at the ready, knowing who the four were even behind their masks and Death Eater robes. “Azkaban not to your liking boys?”
“We decided a change of scenery was in order.” It was Yaxley. Death Eater robes hung off his emaciated frame. His silver mask was set firmly in place.
“Decided America was the land of opportunities.” Rookwood.
“Low and behold, look what we find.” Nott Sr.
“Snape’s bitch.” Mulciber.
“Hardly,” Melody hissed.
“I wonder,” Yaxley said, stalking around the side. She could tell they were trying to surround her and she was having none of it, stepping back around and out of the way. “Do you still suck-“
Melody threw a silencing charm at him, effectively shutting him up. She’d worked hard to erase all knowledge of her ever being a Death Eater, let alone her involvement with Severus beyond her twins’ parentage. She’d be damned if it would come out in front of a group of American sixth years the first day of classes.
“What’s a matter?” Rookwood taunted. “Hit a sore spot did he? I bet Snape-“
She silenced him too. Damn them. Severus was her one weak spot. She still woke up in a cold sweat from the memories of their time spent in the Dark Lord’s service. She knew Severus did too. Sometimes they’d go downstairs and drink their memories away together. Celeste and Alex would come down and collect them, letting them rant and rave and cry for innocence lost and then take them to bed so they could sleep it off. It was probably the only reason they got along so well now, having worked through their issues one bottle of fire whiskey at a time.
Mulciber was laughing. “I think we did. I bet that bullshit about you being his sla-“
Melody shut him up with a vicious jerk of her wand. What in the hell were they doing? Death Eater protocol stated attack first, ask questions later. It did NOT say to stand around and verbally spar with their victims. She kept her eyes on the three silenced men, not willing to let them get the drop on her. Her silencing spells were strong but that didn’t mean they couldn’t cast non-verbals. They were still trying to circle her.
“Have anything useless to add Nott?” She figured she’d poke a bit and try to get one of them to talk.
“Well I see how well bringing up the past worked.”
“I prefer to live in the here and now.” Melody tried not to hiss at him. Her fangs were ready to come out and she was having a hard time keeping them in. “How about you tell me why you’re here and why you’re not following your Lord’s protocol.”
“Oh, we have a new master now,” Nott drawled. “Master prefers not to see bloodshed.”
“I highly doubt that. Don’t suppose you’ll tell me who this master is, would you?” Melody thought back to the dungeons of Voldemort’s castle. The signature for the spell on the door matched Mulciber. It fit really, tasteless wards meant to humiliate. Yaxley and Rookwood, the most powerful of the two, were all over that medical setting. Nott though, she hadn’t seen his signature anywhere.
“I saw what you did to Bellatrix you know. It took her a week to heal from that.” Nott’s voice was soft and almost had a tone of awe in it. “You are a very powerful witch, breaking into the Dark Lord’s castle and burning it to ash.”
Melody fought not to blanch. They must have traced her signature but she wasn’t the one who burned the building to ash. That was Draco. Then again, his signature was so powerful it was probably undetectable. She had to throw him off. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you do.” Nott sidestepped and she knew she was fixing to be trapped.
She put up a wandless shield at her back just in case they tried what she was afraid they were going to. Where in the hell was Severus? She strained her ears and heard the faint shouts of a dozen voices outside. A quick glance showed that Severus was in the hall. His wand blazed against at least a dozen others. So, it wasn’t just the four of them but they’d sent their most powerful after her and were relying on sheer numbers to defeat Severus. Well, it wasn’t going to work. He could take twice that many easily. They looked like normal signatures.
“Ah, so you’ve realized how this is going down.” Nott’s voice sounded sharp, irritated. “Snape was always good with a wand but he’s no match for twenty.
Twenty? Good Gods. Still, she knew Severus could do it. If she kept them talking, she could find out more and stall. “So what, you get others to do your dirty work? Don’t you want to take your own revenge?”
“They’ll be no revenge…yet.” She could almost feel Nott grin evilly under his mask. “We just want a little chat.”
“Sorry, not in the mood for conversation today.” She mentally cursed when she ran out of room to step sideways. Rookwood and Mulciber had each taken a corner and Yaxley was currently sneaking in behind her. She wondered if they knew she could see.
“I’m afraid you don’t have much choice.” Notts words were light but there was no mistaking his meaning. “You probably don’t know this, but you’re surrounded.”
She couldn’t help herself. She laughed, a great cackle worthy of a witch. “How in Merlin’s name do you think I don’t know that?”
“You’re blind,” Nott said smugly. “You might can sense magic and follow the sound of my voice but you still can’t see behind you.”
Melody quirked an eyebrow. “I can’t?”
“Come off it. I saw you trip no less than seven times over muggle bodies on the way to the door. Snape had to pick you up so he wouldn’t be held up by you.”
Melody laughed again. She was thrilled that their ruse had worked so thoroughly. The tripping served two purposes. The first was that she was supposed to be blind and muggles had no magic to sense so it was logical that she’d trip over them. The second was that if she stumbled, she had a chance to put her hands on them, tell them they’d be fine, and cast the spell to make them appear dead so they could get them out of there.
“You’ve gone barmy witch.”
“Sorry,” she chuckled, wiping tears of mirth out of her eyes. “It was just, that was amazing. One incident and you have me all figured out.”
“Not one,” Nott continued. “I’ve seen you trip hundreds of times over stupid stuff, rugs, cracks in the stone, steps, the list goes on. No one’s that good.”
“Oh I can assure you, I’m very good,” she purred. “You should quit while you’re ahead you know. You could leave, disappear, save yourself the embarrassment of being bested by a blind woman. You might even escape the dementor’s kiss which is what you’ll get for breaking out.”
“It’s four to one Bach. Give up now and avoid a painful situation.”
Melody glanced over and saw Mulciber leering at a rather pretty brunette who was curled up away from the rest of the class, cringing back as far as she could against the wall. You could take the Death Eater out of the revel, but you couldn’t take the revel out of the Death Eater. She threw a stinging jinx over her shoulder and caught him in the ass. “I’m over here Mulciber. You always did have a hard time staying on task.”
“How did you know?” Nott’s voice quivered.
“Pretty good for a blind woman huh?” Melody smirked. “I’m getting tired of talking. How about a bit more action?”
“If you wish,” Nott said.
Melody flinched when he put a shield up. His was almost as powerful as hers. How had he done that? She narrowed her eyes to get a closer look and then wished she hadn’t. He was wearing one of the necklaces, this one containing the spirit of another one of the girls Draco had helped cross over. Shit. She encased herself in her shield and then stepped back quickly. She had one more trick up her sleeve, literally. She threw a packet of Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder in the air and ducked, putting a second shield up to protect her class. The Weasley twins had given her another powder, a recent invention that allowed her to see through anything, just like the Hand of Glory that Draco had in his sixth year. She quickly downed it and shot a stunner at Rookwood.
“Stop!” Nott yelled as Mulciber cast a slicing hex. “You’ll hit one of us you idiot.”
Melody laughed. “Never were too bright, were you Mulciber?”
“Why you bitch!” Mulciber screamed and sent a deadly yellow hex straight for her. She went into the splits and winced as the spell hit the back wall and shattered a few of her framed posters. She took a deep breath and started casting. She just hoped that no one else would get hurt.

“Do you hear that?” Hermione asked as she and Draco padded down the hallways of Salem Academy. They had returned to show Melody their handy work. It was a bit disconcerting not being able to hear their footsteps, the muffling charms doing their job.
Draco strained a bit and then jumped when he heard an all too familiar curse, the one Dolohov had used on Hermione. “They’re under attack!”
They flew down the hallways, looking left and right and following the sounds of crackling until they came to Severus and Melody’s hall. It looked like a recreation of the final battle, dozens of Death Eater robes swarming around one solitary figure. Severus was in the middle, his shield deflecting a half dozen hexes at a time as he picked his attackers off one by one. That would never do.
Draco gave one glance to his wife and they both ran into the fray, stunning six of them before they realized what was going on. Severus gave a barely noticeable sigh of relief and started stunning as quickly as he could. It was over in a matter of moments. They quickly tied each stunned person up and piled them up in a heap, casting an anti-apparition and portkey ward around them so they would stay put.
“Melody,” Severus panted and took off for her classroom. He jerked the door open and ducked just as the killing curse shot through the door.
“Damn it Mulciber!” Yaxley screamed. “No killing!”
“Cunt deserves it!” Mulciber yelled back.
“No! The master needs her and Snape alive!” Rookwood cut in.
Severus shot a stunner into the room. He couldn’t see a thing, the darkness powder sucking all the light out. He reached in his pocket and knocked back the antidote powder, his vision clearing. Melody had placed herself in between the four Death Eaters and the students, blocking curse after curse but unable to cast any of her own. He snuck in, creeping over to the side to go help her.
Draco and Hermione fumbled in their robes for their powder. There was no way they were letting those two do this on their own. Protecting was their job and there was no telling what their attackers would do. They’d already cast a killing curse. Draco entered first, stalking around the opposite way and coming up behind Rookwood. Hermione snuck in behind Yaxley and they both cast stunners at the same time. The Death Eaters fell like chunks of lead. The powder was starting to dissipate now, their cover on the verge of being blown.
“Shit, he made it!” Mulciber cried and cast the killing curse at Severus and Melody.
The potion master quickly grabbed Melody and yanked her into him. He slid his fangs in her neck and pulled deeply so he could pull her magic to him, casting a shield to block the curse from their side of the room. The curse bounced and flew across the room. Draco and Hermione clasped hands and threw up another shield. The curse bounced back and hit the other shield. Obviously not thinking, Mulciber cast another killing curse, this one ricocheting in the same fashion. The curses hurdled back and forth at an alarming speed before each found their mark, hitting the two remaining Death Eaters in the chest.
The room was completely visible as they fell. Severus quickly backed out of Melody’s neck, licking the wound and gently lowering her to the floor. The blood loss coupled with her powerful orgasm, a side effect of the bite, had weakened her so much she could barely stand. Draco threw him a bottle of blood replinisher and he dumped it down her throat.
“I’m so sorry,” Severus whispered in her ear as he caressed her hair. “It was the only way I knew to cast a shield strong enough.
“S’okay Sev,” Melody slurred and wobbled a bit before the potion took effect. “Was the only way.”
“What happened?” Severus asked.
“I was teaching and I saw them coming,” Melody said, her voice gaining a bit of strength. “I knew who they were immediately so I called you and those bastards blew up my door.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t arrive sooner. They had a small army with them.”
“Saw it.” Melody smiled weakly. “They still thought I was blind.”
Severus chuckled and picked her up off the floor. He sat her on her desk and looked her over. “Did they get you anywhere?”
“Course not.” Melody scowled. “What do you take me for, a first year?”
“You didn’t hex first.” Severus quirked an eyebrow.
“They wanted to have a chat, orders from their new master.” Melody wrinkled her nose in disgust. “So we chatted. Sev, they wanted us both…alive.”
“That’s not good,” Hermione broke in. “Did they say why?”
“No.” Melody ran the conversation over in her head. “They said they knew I burned Moldy’s castle to the ground.”
“They knew this?” Draco was alarmed. He had been the one to cast the fire.
Melody nodded. “They were certain it was me.”
“Call Potter,” Severus growled and tied up Rookwood and Yaxley. “Their new master is an idiot. You don’t send Mulciber unless you want someone to end up dead.”
“Well, this time it was him.” Melody shook her head. “What kind of moron casts two killing curses when they’re flying through the air at him?”
“Mulciber, obviously,” Draco snorted and grabbed his mirror. “Potter!”
Harry’s face appeared in the mirror. He looked haggard. “What’s wrong?”
Draco looked around. “We have a problem.”
“So do I. All those boys escaped.”
“I think we might have found them.” Draco looked out in the hall. The number looked about right.
“Where?” Harry’s eyes were wild.
“Salem.”
“Be right there.”
Draco slapped the compact shut and then looked over to his left. He just realized there was a class full of terrified students staring at them. “Is everyone alright? Anyone hurt?”
“Um, I think she fainted.” Colton had a limp Lizzy in his arms. Her face was deathly pale.
“Bring her over here.” Draco grabbed a few desks and put them together to make a makeshift examination table.
Colton sat her down as gently as he could and stepped back so they could work. Hermione waved her wand over the girl and gasped, her eyes going wide from the results.
“Hermione, a word,” Melody called and waited until she walked over. “That girl, whatever’s wrong with her beyond passing out, it was her father.”
Hermione’s eyes darkened in anger. “How bad?”
“All but sexual,” Melody hissed, the anger coming back full force.
“Well, she’s got broken ribs and most of her insides are bruised. There is some internal bleeding as well. She’s probably wearing enough glamours to make Umbridge look like Cinderella.”
“Fix her,” Severus growled. Melody placed a hand on his shoulder to stop him from flying off the handle. He was even more sensitive about abuse than she was, especially since their debacle.
Hermione set to work, healing fractures, setting old breaks, and repairing the damage from the badly healed ones. Draco joined her and wordlessly started working on her internal organs. She had been bleeding inside quite a bit so it took him a while to put her back to rights. When they were done, they woke her back up.
“How are you feeling?” Hermione asked gently.
The girl shrieked and almost fell off the desk. Colton caught her right before she hit the floor and she screamed louder, struggling to get away from him. He sat her back down and she scrambled backwards only to topple off the other side. Draco caught her and had to dodge to keep her elbows out of his face. Scared she’d continue to hurt herself, Hermione put a mild petrifying spell on her.
“Easy now,” Hermione said softly and motioned for Draco to carry her over to Melody.
Melody scrambled off the desk, swaying a bit. Severus placed an arm around her for support and waited stoically for her to talk the poor frightened girl down. While she did that, Draco and Hermione checked everyone else over for any injuries. They were all scared to death but relatively unscathed.
“What the bloody fuck is going on?” Yaxley’s scream startled them out of their activities.
Ron rushed through the door. “You’re going to get to snog a dementor.”
“No!” Yaxley started struggling to get away from his bonds.
Not wanting him to get away, Draco took pleasure in stunning him again. He added extra oomph to it.
“Thanks mate.” Ron grinned and yanked the Death Eater across the floor and out the door. He came back a few moments later for Rookwood. When he returned the next time, Draco stopped him.
“Best call the morgue for these two.”
“Who cast the curse?” Ron’s voice was strained. He hated this part of his job.
“Mulciber did,” Severus said smoothly. “Ricochet can be a nasty thing, got them both.”
“Stupid bastard,” Ron growled and levitated the bodies out of the room. “We’re going to need a report.”
“Sure Weasley,” Melody tried walking over to him but staggered and almost hit the ground.
“Perhaps it would be best if I carried you for now,” Severus said, his face full of guilt for almost draining her. It had taken a lot to hold such a powerful shield.
“When I get my strength back Severus, I’m going to hex you bald.”
“So you say.” Severus gave a shrug and picked her up.
“What is going on here?” A whiny screech assaulted their ears.
“Death Eater attack Headmistress Whorple,” Ron said. “We’ve called the American Aurors and we’re sorting it out now.”
“I knew it!” The woman screeched and pointed at Severus and Melody. “I knew I shouldn’t have hired those two, once a Death Eater, always a Death Eater. I knew it in my gut!”
“With all due respect Headmistress,” Colton said softly. “If it weren’t for them, we’d all be dead right now.”
“What?” Whorple stuttered.
“It’s true.” Lizzy’s soft whisper caught her attention. “Professor Bach kept a shield up between us and them the whole time. Then Professor Snape joined her and helped her stop the killing curse.”
“Impossible! No one can survive the killing curse,” Whorple huffed.
Harry was leaning against the door, fists clenched and a dark look on his face. “So the fact that I did it twice is of no consequence?”
Whorple paled. “I-I didn’t…mean.”
“Sure you didn’t,” Harry growled and entered. “I think it would be best to dismiss classes for the day so we can sort through this mess.”
“Y-yes, yes of course,” Whorple spluttered and shot out the door to dismiss classes.
“Oh, I could hex her to the moon,” Melody growled.
“You’ll have to stand in line,” Severus hissed. “How dare she, insisting that you were the same as those…animals!”
Melody shook her head. “Some people will only see what they want to see Sev. You know that.”
Severus sighed and nodded. “Truer words were never spoken. Come on Weasley, let’s get this statement over with.”
Draco and Hermione were about to walk out the door before Lizzy’s soft voice stopped them again. “Were they really Death Eaters?”
Draco sighed and ducked his head. “That’s a question you’re going to have to ask them. However, I think they’ve proven their worth, don’t you?”
Lizzy nodded but her eyes were far away. “I thought Death Eaters were a fairy tale my parents always told me to scare me.”
“Oh no, they were very real and very dangerous,” Draco said softly. “If you ever see someone dressed like that again, run.”
“I suggest everyone stay put. The aurors will want to speak with you all,” Hermione said and grabbed Draco’s arm.
“How did you do that?” Colton’s voice was respectful but his eyes burned with curiosity.
“Trained reaction,” Draco said, knowing that he meant deflecting the killing curse but unwilling to answer the question. They might all need new memories after this.
“I see.” Colton’s eyes were narrowed in observation. He knew something was fishy but he wasn’t about to make a scene right then.
Hermione and Draco walked out in the hall and watched Aurors pop in and out, hauling their charges to Azkaban. This was going to be a very long day.
