Chapter Three: Detentione (Detention)
“Stir counter clock-wise...” Sirius muttered under his breath as he frowned down into the potion in his cauldron, it was a soft yellow colour, just as it was described in the book and he was proud of it. He reached to his table, one hand still stirring slowly as he grabbed his roughly chopped Fireflies and dropped them into the concoction. “Five times clockwise.” He changed the direction of his stirs.
“Ah, well done, Sirius! This is the best concoction in the room today, well done.” Sirius glanced up to see Slughorn standing behind him, he shrugged and returned his eyes to his cauldron. He was only doing well because James had had a stomach ache and he had no one to bully Snape with, Remus was pretty boring when it came to that particular past time. “You know I am having a little gathering this evening and I would like for you to come, what do you say?”
“A gathering sir? What for?” Sirius muttered as he absently tucked hair behind his ear.
“Oh just a few choice students, everyone says they enjoy them, isn’t that right Miss Evans?” He turned to the red haired girl on the table in front of Sirius’.
Lily jumped slightly at being addressed but she smiled. “Oh of course sir, they’re great fun.” She said but Sirius looked at her and raised an eyebrow, Lily grimaced behind his back. Sirius smirked.
“I would sir, but you see James is ill and I’d like to be with him and make sure he’s alright.”
“Ah, such a shame dear boy. Why, I have several of your cousins in my little club and it would be nice to have you there, but I understand.”
Sirius winced as Slughorn clapped him on the back, nearly throwing him face first into his potion. He swore under his breath before continuing. Lily narrowed her eyes at him. “You know, I don’t understand why you’re so relaxed in class, I’ve seen you when you’re alone and you’re very good at lessons and your grades are very high. Why do you hang around with that Potter when you’re so obviously intelligent and can do very good work without him around?”
“Well, let’s see...I can work hard, get good grades and impress my parents or I could actually enjoy my life...I know what I prefer.” Sirius replied.
“What’s wrong with impressing your parents? Mine are very proud of me, even if they don’t exactly understand what it is we do here.”
Sirius looked at the muggle born through his fringe. “I’m pureblood.” He said slowly, stirring his potion. “That means that I have certain standards to work towards, my parents rule my life right down to what robes I should wear at family gatherings. You wouldn’t understand of course, being only a Muggleborn but it’s very annoying. It doesn’t help that my parents keep pushing me to do well, loading me with the burden of being the heir and all that bollocks. I can’t be bothered with it all, I just want an easy life, you know?”
Lily was silent for a moment, her green eyes dark with anger. “ ‘Only a muggleborn’...?”
Sirius nodded. “Yes, no matter what you do your parents will be proud because Magic isn’t natural to you, whereas I have them badgering me twenty four seven and I have to uphold the family image...I shouldn’t even be talking to you.”
“So, you think I’m inferior?”
Sirius looked up from his work and blinked. “You’re a muggle.” He said as if it was the most obvious explanation.
“What? I’m a witch!”
“Yes, but your parents are Muggle’s who have no magic...you don’t have to even try and they’ll be proud of you no matter what because they don’t know any better. Oh, I don’t mind, of course, but my parents have lots of people to compare my skills to, I have to keep up a good standard of work and compete against every Pureblood in the school, they like to compare me to the others.”
“So, because my parents don’t have magic it means that you’re better than them?” Lily’s voice was soft but her hands were clenched into fists at her sides.
Sirius continued on, unaware of her anger. “According to my parents, yes. I grew up knowing spells you can only dream of, I grew up in this world Evans...It’s a simple fact that I know more than you ever will by default. But again, I don’t blame you.” He smiled and turned back to his potion.
“You are the most insufferable, arrogant git I have ever had the misfortune to encounter, Black!” Lily shouted furiously, Sirius gazed at her in confusion.
“What’s that for?” He asked irritably. “I was stating a fact, Evans. I’m sorry bu-...” She slapped him, cutting him off midsentence, his jaw dropped slightly and his eyes widened in shock. There was a moment of silence while the class held its breath in trepidation. Slowly Sirius’ hand went to the reddening mark on his cheek and his expression darkened, his eyes narrowed and he sneered. “Mudblood bitch! How dare you touch me?!” He hissed, his anger taking over and moving his lips before he could even think about the words coming from him.
“Mr. Black! I will not have language like that in my classroom!” Slughorn strode over to the pair just as the bell rang signalling the end of the day. “Both of you, detention and thirty points from Gryffindor...” There was a collective groan. “Ten for Miss Evans’ actions and twenty for Mr Black. I want you both here tonight, perhaps you can reconcile your differences whilst attending to the Potions Stores, it needs sorting. I will expect you at seven pm promptly.”
“But sir I...”
“No, Miss Evans, no excuses.”
Sirius shrugged and began bottling his potion quickly, at least he would have time to eat dinner before his detention, even if he didn’t relish the idea of being trapped inside a cupboard with the red head.

“Detention?!” James’ eyes widened as he gaped at Sirius.
Sirius sent a glare at Remus who ignored him, the four of them were sitting in the Hospital Wing, James in one of the beds, he was pale but seemed to be recovering. “Thanks a lot, Remus.” Sirius muttered mulishly.
“Why did Slughorn give you detention? He never gives detention!”
“He also got twenty points taken from Gryffindor.” Remus interjected with a glare in Sirius’ direction.
“WHAT?! You idiot! Why?!”
“Because he called Lily Evans a...what were the words you used?” Remus asked mockingly. “Oh yes, I believe the words; Mudblood Bitch were used.”
“Fuck off Remus.” Sirius muttered, he sank low in his seat, his eyes avoiding his friends’ as they gazed at him.
Finally James seemed to shake off his shock. “Wow...” he whispered. “I thought you were cool.”
“I am cool!” Sirius said with a huff that blew his fringe from his eyes. “It’s just that my mouth ran away with me is all, I didn’t mean to say it...it just kind of...slipped out...”
“Where the hell do you hear stuff like that?” James replied with a sigh.
Sirius shrugged, still avoiding their eyes. “My mum, my dad, my cousins...I get it from everywhere. You don’t understand...”
“No, I don’t. Why do you hate people who haven’t got pure blood?” Remus asked, there was disgust in his eyes.
“I don’t!” Sirius snapped, finally turning to look at Remus. “I like you, you’re cool. I don’t like Evans but that has nothing to do with her blood status...It’s because she’s a prissy know it all. Like I said, none of you will understand.”
“What is there to understand? You told Evans she had dirt in her veins...you basically made yourself sound like a Slytherin.” James said sharply.
Sirius growled in his throat, his lip peeled back from his teeth as he leaned forward slightly. “I am a fucking Slytherin! I was supposed to be sorted into that house, but I refused. I refused to allow myself to follow Family Tradition which is boring and frankly could do with an overhaul, I have risked the wrath of my whole family by wanting to be with you...” He cut himself off, his eyes went wide and he turned away. “It really doesn’t matter.” He whispered, failing to cover up his mistake. He hated it when his temper made him reveal too much.
James sighed. “Alright, it was a mistake...but seriously mate, don’t talk like that. If you were Slytherin I wouldn’t hang out with you.”
Sirius watched James from the corner of his eye. “Really?”
James smiled. “Really. Now, help me get out of here...I’m bored!”

“Ah, good, you’re here, Mr. Black.” Slughorn stood up slowly, manoeuvring his massive bulk around the desk. Evans stood a distance away from Sirius as they listened to the teacher tell them what they had to do. “Now then, I want you both to begin sorting out the Potions cupboard. I want everything organised and put away neatly, new labels written, and shelves dusted...it may take you more than one evening’s detention but that is all for the good. I want you both to reconcile your differences and Mr. Black, I want you to realise that you can’t call people names like that. Do you understand?”
“Yes sir.” Sirius muttered, Lily echoed it.
The cupboard was large but awkward due to the sheer number of shelves, bottles, jars and jugs rose to the ceiling filled with a variety of coloured liquids, strange plants and bits of animal. “I will start from the bottom, you go up the ladder and we’ll meet half way.” Lily said firmly, Sirius shrugged and climbed the ladder.
The work was slow and boring as he rummaged through the many shelves, changing labels, dusting, scrubbing and generally working hard. When their hour was up they left in silence, Lily hadn’t said a word to him and he was too stubborn to apologise, no matter how guilty he felt about losing his temper.

Days and weeks slid past quickly, Sirius finished his series of detentions with Lily Evans and they walked away without another word. He and James were soon put in another with McGonagall for setting fire to a tapestry, it was an accident as they had been trying to change the picture into that of a nude woman. They were set to work with Filch after a good long lecture.
“You two are the most infuriating pair of troublemakers I have ever encountered in all my years at this school!” The Deputy Head paced back and forth between the two boys who had their heads bowed in pretend repentance. “That Tapestry is as old as the building, it has been there for generations. I cannot believe that you two nearly destroyed it!”
“We didn’t mean to Professor.” James said in a sulky voice, he toed the floor with his shoe and held his hands behind his back.
“Yeah, we were only trying to...um...practice a spell...” Sirius continued, he met McGonagall’s eyes with his own Puppy-like gaze. “We’re really sorry, Professor. We promise it’ll never happen again.”
McGonagall briefly thought back to her original assessment of the pair and almost smiled, she managed to retain her disproving frown. “You cannot practise Magic in the corridors, for this alone you will get a detention...on top of harming school property I am afraid I will have to remove points. Five from both of you doing magic outside of class time and another five for burning the tapestry.”
“But professor...” Sirius and James began in unison, but McGonagall cut them off with a sharp shake of her head.
“Enough, your detentions will be tomorrow night with Filch.”

Sirius gazed out the window, it was the last day of term and he felt a terrible emptiness. The very next day he would be leaving the castle, leaving his friends and everything he had come to know and he didn’t want to. He wished that he could stay at Hogwarts forever and never leave, he sighed heavily and pushed one hand into his hair as he stared across the grounds.
“Hey.” James put his hand on Sirius’ shoulder and looked at him. “What’s wrong? We’re going home tomorrow, isn’t that a good thing?”
Sirius shrugged. “I guess...I’m going to miss it here.”
“Yeah, this has been fun...but it’s only for a little while, it won’t be long before we’re back for our second year! Won’t that be great?”
“Yes...but summer is a long time, James and I...” He shook his head and forced a smile. “It’s alright, like you said, we’re going home.”
James smiled and crawled up onto the window sill with his friend, he let Sirius lean on him as they both gazed out over the green hill and forest. “I’ll ask my mum if you can come stay for a while over summer...” He said.
“Really?!” Sirius’ eyes widened as he faced James. “Your parents would let me?”
“Definitely...don’t your parents let you have sleep over’s and stuff?”
Sirius bit his bottom lip and looked away. “Uh...no...not really. They’re...” He frowned. “Really old fashioned...I...I’m not...allowed friends...I...” He winced and lowered his head, his hands shook slightly. “You can’t tell anyone though, no one can know...promise?”
James gazed at Sirius, he looked so small and almost frightened as he sat at his side, slowly he put his arm around his shoulders and smiled. “Sure, we’re friends and friends keep each other’s secrets.”
“Thanks...” Sirius smiled and closed his eyes, he liked the closeness between James and himself, he enjoyed his scent, like fresh soap and general boysihness. He liked him more than he had ever liked anyone, his friendship made warmth spread through him, acting as a talisman against the darkness he knew he would have to return to.
