(Second Year)
She was so late for double charms. Not late but at this rate she’d never make it to class on time. By the time she made it class would be almost over. Luna groaned as she took the stairs as quickly as her short legs would allow. This was indeed her second year of charms so she knew that being late wasn’t something her brother would let slip. She’d been last week because she’d been forced to make a stop in the girl’s loo. This morning the fault lie with oversleeping. Ginny had tried to wake her but she had been too tired to attend breakfast. Why did their dorms have to be in the dungeons? She’d much rather run down the many flights of stairs than up them. She was still shorter than most first years.
This was all Severus’ fault! If only she had gone to bed like her eyes had been pleading for her to do. No, she had to sit up half of the night listening to him complain once again about having classes with Potter. Like a true friend she had comforted him as he whined about their teasing getting worse. It didn’t matter how many times she informed him that the only reason they continued was because he would always rise to the bait. He should swallow his pride and just allow Ginny to hex them already. That would make her evenings in the Common Room so much more pleasant. She’d already found a nice corner in which to study. No one bothered her on most days. Partly because she didn’t give them a reason to, the other because Lucius was Head Boy.
Thinking of the reason she had been kept up at odd hours, brought her worn mind back to the raven haired Black that was NOT her friend. Last year it didn’t matter how many times she had tried to smile or say hello, Sirius Black had always ignored her. She knew that it didn’t help that she was always with Severus or Ginny, or both. The animosity between her friends and the others was a tangible force. As Ginny pointed out, they had begun the war. As much as she wanted to speak to him, it didn’t seem possible unless it was exchanging insults or threats.
She knew she should be more concerned with her brother’s upcoming wedding. It was to be held over the summer. In seven months her brother would be marrying Cissy. Her and Ginny would both be in the wedding procession. Her parents were making a huge fuss over the ordeal. It would probably be the last wedding their mother attended. Just before arriving back at school the family healer had informed them that her mother’s health was fading. Luna blamed her weakening state on the man she married and all the ignorant talk of blood mingling and doing something about it. It wasn’t enough that all those meetings were stressing out her mother but now Lucius was talking like he wanted to follow the lot in their games. Foolishness! They should be more concerned with family over what wizard was shagging which witch. All she heard over the summer break was how horrible Andy was for betraying her family by consorting with a Mudblood. And Lucius didn’t understand why she had become irrate when he blew off their flying lessons so he could attend those meetings. Her getting on the team next year was a lot more important than sitting around bitching about shite that shouldn’t have any impact on what was for dinner.
Be as that may, she was training every weekend with Ginny. Next year they would make the Quidditch team. She wanted to become a Seeker while Ginny wanted to be a Chaser. Even Cissy had commented that she was extremely talented. She had an eye for observation. Not to mention she was fast on a broom. It meant a lot to hear her best friend admit that she’d make the better Seeker when it came to tryout. There was still time to practice her techniques.
"Oomph," as long as there wasn’t any loose stones midair she’d be great. Said stone caused her books to tumble forward. Her knee kept her face from eating the stone. Tears sprang to her eyes out of humiliation, not pain. How could she be so clumsy? She refused to believe it when her brother said she was too dreamy to play Quidditch. She didn’t always have her mind on vacation. Just when she was walking, in Potions class or being forced to hang around his group.
Her parchment was spread out, along with her quills. Thankfully, her ink was secure in her bag. That had only flung forward to nail her in the back of the head. That saved her from a huge mess to clean. Now she just had to gather her belongings and think of an excuse as to why she was fifteen minutes late instead of five. There was no way she was going to get out of a detention. Then there was no way she would be able to get out of a lecture from Lucius. There were at least five of his lackeys in her classes. Mousy little Slytherins that would snark just to get on his good side. "Damn!"
"Here, let me help."
Luna glanced up at the voice to notice the Gryffindor symbol first. Then at dark curling hair, her heart began to flutter. It was him! His head was bent as he knelt down to carefully retrieve the parchment. She reached for her text book and waited for someone to pinch her. Why was he helping? Unsure of the reason, she quickly scanned around for the others. Did he have something to do with the reason she had tripped? She was sure she had tripped over the stone. Was this some kind of joke? Was he going to do something to her belongings?
Sirius couldn’t believe his luck. Finally, she wasn’t anywhere near his cousin or that Snivellous. What were the chances of him rushing to catch up to his friends to find her in need of assistance? He carefully stacked her parchment. Just from the texture he could tell how expensive it was. Nothing but the best for a Malfoy. It was a shame she hadn’t made it into Ravenclaw, then talking to her wouldn’t be so hard. Glancing out of the corner of his eye, he could see that once again she was nervously chewing on her bottom lip. How could a Slytherin manage to look so innocent. She still reminded him of an angel despite being in the wrong house. "Here."
"Thank you," not immediately sensing a trap she extended her hand to take the offering. Her stomach dropped noticing the smile or was it a smirk? It was hard to tell since the left corner of his mouth twitched upwards while doing both. The grey eyes were bright and full of life, which made her nervous. However, she couldn’t help but notice that he was cute. It was easy to forget who he was friends with as he stood to extend a hand to help her rise.
Such soft, smooth, and dainty hands. The hand she placed in his was practically swallowed in his own. He had already noticed that one thing he liked about some girls was the texture of their hands. Seconds after she made it back on her feet, he kept a firm hold on the tiny fingers. His chest tightened and a strange heat filled his stomach when she finally smiled at him. It was the same kind of smile she had given him the first day they had met. Blue eyes stared back at him as seconds turned into a minute. He wanted to say something but wasn’t sure what to say. Apologize for hexing her quills last year? Ask her if she’d consider swapping to another house so they could be friends?
"Where the hell are you? Sirius!"
Luna jumped back and snatched her hand away in the process. No sooner as she put space between them the other three Gryffindors came around the corner. As usual Potter was in the front of the other two. Why weren’t they in class already? They had Charms along with her. Or was this where they all decided to hex her when alone? Sirius was already walking around her to join his friends. Leaving her standing alone in the hall.
"I’m coming. I told you I’d catch up." Sirius walked quickly towards the trio. He should have known they’d come looking for him. They must have made it to the secret passage and gotten tired of waiting for him to arrive. Why couldn’t they have waited like he asked?
"We figured you got lost." James grinned as the barb hit home. Although he had promised never to bring up the time their friend had gotten lost in the dungeons, he couldn’t help but point out that he was over fifteen minutes late. What other excuse was there? He glanced down the hall to see who else was around. He crossed his arms seeing the blonde Slytherin slowly walking towards them. What was she doing here? "Were you talking to the Slytherin princess?"
"Hell no, like I’d talk to her!" Sirius responded immediately without thinking. He couldn’t allow his friends to think that he would try to blow them off. They were the only friends he had. "I just had to stop and remind the slag that she doesn’t own the hallway. You know how they all walk around like they own the place."
She did not! Luna frowned but didn’t bother to comment on the remark. She wasn’t a slag and she didn’t act like she owned the place. How rude! He could have just said he was running late. But she assumed it wouldn’t have gotten the same hilarious response from his immature friends. Shrugging it off the best she could, she strolled by the group without speaking. She wouldn’t let their attitude get to her. Or the fact that Sirius had quickly changed his persona as soon as they showed.
Ginny twirled her quill trying to step off the boredom. Did she really need to listen to this nonsense? What was the point in teaching them about muggle history? It was in the past. She didn’t really care about what they were doing in the present. What she wanted to know was why the hell was Potter constantly looking back at her? Did he have a problem? Or had he realized that she was responsible for hexing that fat little friend of his? In her opinion it had been an improvement. The annoying arse was an idiot and a pain to boot. The only reason he hadn’t been drowned in the lake was because he was friends with Potter. Was she the only one that noticed how Pettigrew would often shoot his OWN friends looks of hatred? And they had the nerve to comment about Lily’s choice of friends.
She didn’t want to imagine what the next five years would bring. Second year was coming to an end already. Four more weeks until summer break. Was this drivel going to be on the exam? She was glad her parents wouldn’t get upset if she got a T in this class. Her mother had fumed over the fact that her children were being forced to take it. Hell, if she flunked on purpose she might receive a new broom.
"What are some of the uses of communication? How about you, Ms. Black? Care to give it a try?"
What? Was she the only one obviously not paying attention? Means of communication? "Talking?" Assuming muggles know how to do something so primitive. She knew they did. Lily knew how to speak without any difficulties. She just didn’t give a damn about their way of living. She’d never live among them so why make her learn it?
"Not the answer I was looking for. Five points from Slytherin for not paying attention."
"That’s not fair. My answer was valid. I’m sure they couldn’t use one of those telephones if they couldn’t speak. Unless most of them still use grunts and groans as a means to communicate." Ginny couldn’t believe she lost house points. Cissy would bitch at her now. Five points meant something when they were barely beating Gryffindor for the house cup. "I’d pay more attention if you didn’t teach useless facts."
"How can you say it’s useless? I find it interesting." James turned in his seat so he could look at her while speaking. He saw that the professor wasn’t going to interrupt. It wouldn’t be the first time they had a debate in class. He didn’t understand her narrowminded-ness. She could be a brilliant witch if she didn’t have her head so far up Snivellous’ arse.
"You would. I say it’s useless to teach those who do not want to learn. I’m not at all interested in learning about muggle history or their way of life. There is little to no chance of me ever having to interact with them. That is the problem with this class." She would rather be learning Divination. At least that was entertaining if not as pointless.
"The problem is with your family." James knew all about how the Black’s saw things. They were all about blood purity. They were nothing but prejudiced snobs that thought too highly of their inbred status. "You’ve been raised to hate those different than yourself. Your way of thinking is the reason we are having problems and the very reason for this class. There is nothing wrong with learning about another kind of society. You just need to be more open-minded."
"And you need to stop being such a bitch. There is nothing wrong with my family." Sure, her sister Bella didn’t seem to be brewing with a full cauldron but her sisters were fine. She wasn’t going to point out that her eldest had married a muggleborn. "No matter what you say I will never agree that we need to be more open when it comes to muggles. I think the less we have to do with them the better."
"That is where you are being naive. How can we ever learn to co-exist when we do nothing but distance ourselves?" James knew that most of the people in the class was on his side. She was just being a bitch.
"With good cause. Go to the library and read about the so called witch trials. The one time we thought to let muggles know we exist we were hunted and executed for being different. The simple fact of the matter is that while our society do not fear muggles, they fear what they do not understand. No matter how much you or anyone wants to dissolve the barriers, it will never happen. Simply because most of them will not accept something so different than what they consider to be normal." Ginny didn’t like to think of herself as being prejudice, just smart. "I have a friend that is muggleborn and I’m sure she’d be the first to tell you that while her parents are accepting of her being different, her sibling is not. My point being that while some can adjust, there will always be some that won’t. The same can be said about our society. There will never be complete acceptance so to try to force it will only bring about tragedy."
"Very well, you’ve made your point. You’ll be excused from detention this time, Ms. Black but please pay attention in the future."
"Right," James turned to stare in front of the class at that haughty smile. He didn’t care for her point. He knew that not everyone would accept changes. His father always taught him to believe that just because everyone couldn’t accept change didn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. How could Evans put up with that attitude? Girls like her would never change. They thought because they were pretty, popular and from a rich pureblood family they could do whatever they wanted. He knew it was her that had made all of Peter’s hair fall out. He couldn’t prove it but it was her type of hex. It was all good, he had a surprise waiting for her in potions.
