Chapter Four - Opportunities
Severus paced back and forth in Dumbledore’s office. Professor McGonagall arrived shortly after Severus and informed the Headmaster of an urgent matter that required his immediate attention. It had been only a few minutes, but it seemed an eternity and Severus was tempted to return to his dormitory to speak to Ella before she left. He needed to know for certain that he’d understood her last comments correctly. If so, he was bloody curious how she knew he’d been in the astronomy tower that night. He also wondered if he truly was the student selected for the Avalon apprenticeship.
Severus gave in to temptation, heading for the door. He was halted by Dumbledore’s return.
“So sorry, my dear boy,” Dumbledore said as he entered and went directly to his desk. “Please sit down…lemon drop?”
“No, thank you,” Severus replied. He took a seat and waited.
“Well, then! It seems I’m to have a much busier day than I’d planned so let’s get to it, shall we? I’ve reviewed the various internships being offered for the summer and I’m afraid that the news has not been not positive. The available positions are either for much less qualified students or in fields that I’m afraid would hold little interest for you, Severus.”
Severus kept his face blank, despite his disappointment.
“However,” Dumbledore continued. “A letter arrived yesterday regarding a summer internship with a potioneer who requires assistance collecting rare ingredients. It is a paid internship from June thirtieth through the end of August. The letter also requested you, specifically, since you had been so highly recommended.”
“Thank you, professor,” Severus said. “I appreciate your recommendation as well as all your efforts on my behalf.”
“I’m afraid I cannot take credit in this instance, Severus. I’m not familiar with this particular Potions Master. I didn’t mention anything to you when the letter first arrived yesterday because I needed to confirm the offer, as well as the credentials of the person offering the internship. There are dark forces gaining strength within the wizarding world, so I hope you understand that the delay is necessary in order to ensure your safety.
“The Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers confirmed the credentials and status as soon as I sent the request. I am waiting now for additional information from the parties who recommended you. I do not foresee a problem at this point in your accepting the offer if you are so inclined, but to alleviate any lingering concerns, I’d prefer you wait until I receive that information. That will be later today as I’ve just received word they will be attending today’s Quidditch match.”
“Of course, professor,” Severus said. He was both relieved and excited that he’d not have to spend the summer at Spinner’s End, but also curious as to who might have recommended him.
He wondered briefly, as most likely did the headmaster, if there were ulterior motives to the offer. The ranks of the Dark Lord were growing and most of the Slytherin house sixth and seventh years, were eager to sign on. Severus had been contacted by Lucius Malfoy on several occasions and was seriously considering it himself. A word from Malfoy in the right ear could open many doors and Severus suspected he might be behind this sudden opportunity.
“Might I inquire from whom the recommendation came?” Severus asked, expecting the answer to be Malfoy, especially since they always attended the Slytherin matches.
“Lord and Lady Avonleigh,” Dumbledore replied. “Whilst I believe you are most definitely deserving of the recommendation, I must ensure that the Avonleighs did, in fact, make it and that someone else didn’t use their name to lure you into a dangerous situation. These are troubling times, Severus, and I will not put you or any student at risk.”
“They…recommended…me?”
“I will verify the details, but, yes. They requested your transcripts and three others before they left, so they are well aware of your academic achievements, particularly with regards to potions.”
“You mentioned they would be here…today?”
“Yes, yes. I’d owled them last evening to inquire about the details and their reply came just as you arrived. Apparently, Miss Avonleigh was hoping to see the final Quidditch match and asked if it could be arranged. We’re to meet and discuss the internship matter before the match. Professor McGonagall is taking care of the details as we speak.”
“Professor, I am surprised Miss Avonleigh showed an interested in Quidditch? She doesn't seem the type to be interested in sporting events."
"I was a bit surprised myself," Dumbledore replied. "It appears someone piqued her interest in the game during her visit and she wishes to see a match and learn more about it."
"I see," Severus said, wondering if Potter was the someone in question. He bristled at the thought, but quickly shook it off and continued. "Professor, I’d like to thank them for their recommendation. I would normally send an owl to express my gratitude, but as they will be here, perhaps it would be more appropriate to speak to them in person?”
“That is an excellent idea, Severus. I’ll let you know as soon as Professor McGonagall returns to advise as to what time we should expect their arrival.”
“Thank you, Professor,” Severus said as he stood to take his leave. “May I ask you something?”
“Of course, my dear boy. What is it?”
“You said they requested three other school transcripts besides my own. Was that related the apprenticeship for next year?”
“Yes. They requested records for one student from each of the four houses. You, obviously, represent Slytherin House.”
“So it is possible that I might be chosen?”
“I can’t say for certain, but…yes. I believe that it is a distinct possibility.”

A/N: A short chapter, I know, but necessary for the plot. Stay tuned for more and I promise... smutty goodness is coming soon!
