Severus was not surprised when he noted that Harry had not eaten much. Actually he was surprised by the amount the boy had managed to eat. "Well now that we have all eaten I believe it is time for Harry to go back to bed. We can talk there while you rest."
Harry had to admit the food was excellent, even better then what he'd had from Mrs. Weasley, but he had not been able to eat as much as he would have liked. He had learned the hard way when he'd first gone to Hogwarts about eating more then he should. He'd stuffed himself at his first welcoming feast and had proceeded to throw it up later; his stomach just couldn't handle it all. Since that time he learned to be careful and not over eat. Hearing Severus say he had to go back to bed Harry frowned. "Severus, please let me stay up? I feel like I've been in a bed forever." Without realizing it Harry had a very dejected look on his face as if he'd been told he was being sentenced to detentions with Filtch for a month.
"How long were you in that bed, Harry?" Draco asked. He hoped that he had gotten there when Harry had only been confined for a few days, but he suspected he hadn't. In fact he suspected the other boy had been trapped on that bed for some time considering the state of the room when he'd entered it.
"Not sure actually. I lost track of time," Harry stated still waiting to hear from Severus on the bed issue. "How long has it been since we left school?"
"A month," Draco stated. His eyes connected with Harry's and he knew he wasn't going to like the answer he was about to hear.
"Almost three weeks," Harry said softly not wanting to believe it had been that long either, but he remember very well the day he'd been chained to the bed. He'd been home exactly eleven days and three hours when Dudley had decided that the telly in the living room was too small for him to watch his shows on. Dudley had broken the telly, but had told his father that Harry was to blame, which of course Vernon had easily believed. It wasn't like the man needed an excuse to be mean or nasty to Harry anyway. "Uncle Vernon put me there a little over a week after I got home," he stated softly knowing he had to believe it since he had lived it. He heard Severus and Draco swear and he looked up at them surprised by their response. He'd never heard either of them swear like that before and he was amazed that it was over something that dealt with him being hurt.
"Harry, I understand you don't want to be in bed, but you do need to rest while we speak," Severus said trying to control his anger for what had happened to Harry because he did not want to scare Harry with it. "Would you be willing to recline on a couch or a chaise?" Seeing the boy nod he leaned down to pick him up once more. "I shall carry you to the study then. You can get comfortable there. Draco will you have a house elf bring a couple of pillows and a blanket for him?"
"Of course," Draco stated and called for a house-elf which appeared immediately. "Binky, we need some pillows and a blanket down in the study please. We are also done with breakfast so you may clean up in here after you bring the items to the study."
"Yes master Draco sir," Binky said hopping back and forth from one foot to the other. His master had said please. Tinsey had told him that he was nicer now, but he'd never believed it to be true. "Blanket and pillows, right away master Draco sir." He popped out to take care of the order he'd been given.
Harry shook his head lightly at everything he was seeing. Neither Snape nor Draco were acting anything like what he was used to. He understood what Snape had said about masks and had known some of what he did to the Gryffindors was in order to keep up appearances since he was a spy for the Order, but he also had thought the man hated him since he looked so much like his father so wasn't sure what to make of him. Then there was Draco; he still exuded wealth and he hated to say it class, however he didn't have the arrogance he used to have or the cruel streak he'd seen at school. He didn't notice the manor or the decor as Severus carried him down the stairs to the study; he was too deep in thought about the two men, but particularly Draco. He remembered what the Slytherin had stated during the night; that he regretted his behavior of the past but why did he and why now?
After everything Harry'd been through he was now questioning people's motives, something he should have done from the very beginning. He'd just been so happy to be away from his family and able to do magic that he never really wondered why some people befriended him or why certain events happened. Now, though, his eyes had been opened and he'd gone back over the last five years with a fine tooth comb and he did not like the pattern he was seeing. He sighed softly as Severus set him down on the couch that had several pillows upon it and two blankets folded at the other end. He leaned forward to allow the man to put the pillows behind his back and then relaxed against them. He wasn't sure about putting his feet on the couch, it was too nice and his Aunt would have beaten him if he'd done it, but the decision was taken from him as Severus picked his legs up and swung them onto the couch. He watched as the man then took a blanket to cover him up with. "Are you going to tuck me in too?" Harry asked with humor in his voice.
"I just might brat," Severus said with a mock serious face. He left Harry's side and moved to a chair to relax in while still being able to monitor the boy's health without being too obvious about it. He had the feeling it was going to be a very long day and he did not want Harry to overdo and wear himself out.
Harry watched as Severus and then Draco sat down in chairs that were facing him. "All right then, I would like to find out a few things. I know Draco found me and brought you in Severus, but what I don't understand is what you were doing there in the first place Draco, let alone the fact that you went to the trouble to find me."
Draco took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I came there, Harry, to thank you." He held up his hand to forestall Harry from asking another question yet. "You see, Harry because of your defeat of the Death Eaters at the Ministry my parents were sent to Azkaban; by doing this I was suddenly free. My father had me under the imperius curse since our first year. The weekend after you turned down my friendship he came to visit me; as a school governor he was able to do this with ease. He put me under the curse forcing me to be like him and your fiercest rival. It was subtle in how it controlled me. I was able to do everything else, but when it came to you, your friends or anyone my father thought was beneath us I would react in a certain way and as you know those reactions were not pleasant. When you ended up on the Quidditch team he demanded I try out as well and when I could not until the next year he used the Cruciatus curse upon me. That was the way the next five years would proceed; if I didn't achieve the highest mark or win at Quidditch then he would visit to punish me or wait until I came home for any length of time. I came home this year and didn't have to worry. Before, at summer time, he would reinforce the curse, but this year he couldn't and I was able to break it. I was free and it was because of you Harry. I knew I had to thank you, but I also hoped that perhaps you would give me another chance at being friends."
Harry listened to all this wishing now he'd done more to Lucius or Narcissa last spring; no one should have to go through what Draco did. They were a lot more alike then he'd realized. He'd been so caught up with his own problems he hadn't thought of anyone else having similar issues. He held out his hand to Draco, "I turned down your friendship once. I won't do it a second time; let's start over, but I'll only give you one second chance. Don't screw it up or you'll find out how I could beat old Moldyshorts three times already," He added with a smile.
"I won't," Draco said as he stood up to move closer in order to shake Harry's hand. As their hands touched Draco felt a bit of a charge go through him. Looking into Harry's eyes he had the feeling the other boy had felt it too. He wondered what it meant but didn't get the chance to mention it as his godfather spoke up.
"It would seem I too need this start over," Severus told Harry. He waited until Draco sat back down before continuing. "I made certain assumptions about you Harry before we even met. They appear to have been erroneous and I now need to learn about you as you truly are and not how I thought. Will you allow me this chance?"
Harry knew this was as close to Severus admitting he was wrong as Harry would get. He also knew it was the closest thing to an apology he'd get from the man. He could tell it had to have been hard for him to admit and even harder to say. Harry nodded slightly. "I'd like that chance and the chance to get to know you without you being a snarky bastard to me."
"I believe that is an appropriate description as to how I have treated you," Severus said with a smile. "Now in public I may have to continue to do so but in private there is no reason for you to not get to know me better." He turned to his godson, "Draco could you order us some tea? I think we could all use it and Harry especially needs to drink since he was so dehydrated." He saw Draco nod and turn to call a house elf to order the tea, after that Severus looked at Harry. "We need to discuss other areas as well this morning. Harry I need to know what you want done about your family," He spat that last word out and then had to regain his calm speaking voice. "Do you want to press charges? I recorded everything from yesterday and it would be easy enough to have them brought up on charges of abuse if not attempted murder."
Harry looked down and sighed. He had wondered about this and a big part of him really wanted to see them behind bars; to see justice done and know they would pay for all they had done to him. The problem came in not with going to court but with the press. He paused in his thinking as Draco handed him a cup of tea. He smiled his thanks to the other boy; taking a sip before even attempting to answer Severus. "I would like to but I can't. No, wait, let me explain," He said stopping them from giving him reasons for seeking justice in this case. "I would love to go after them. Merlin knows I tried telling my teachers back in primary school but they never believed me. I know you two do and you have the evidence of it, but even if the law would charge them I would then have to deal with all the press. Can you imagine what Rita Skeeter would publish on me if she got a hold of this? Even if I went after them with the muggle law they would still find out. It would just give them more fodder to feast upon. I don't want that."
"I do understand Harry, but I can assure you that the DMLE would take these charges seriously, they would believe you," Severus told him. He wanted to go to the teachers who had disbelieved their student; that had never even bothered to check the situation out and give them a piece of his mind. No teacher should ever do that to a student. He also wondered why McGonagall had not realized what was happening with a student in her own house; a student she claimed to care about.
"I can also promise that the press will stop all this nonsense," Draco stated feeling some guilt for he knew he had given the press plenty of information over the years about Harry most of which was gossip and maybe not lies, but certainly not the full truth either. "I do not know why they have been allowed to do as they please with you to begin with. There are laws to prevent them from printing lies. I will have my lawyer get with you on this Harry and we will threaten them with a suit if need be. I will state, however, whether you file charges or not against your family, that you have my lawyer help you get emancipated. With the evidence Uncle Sev has and the fact that you are the last of the Potters it should take only a few hours to get it done. If they allowed it for me they shall allow it for you."
Harry thought about this new information. If they could muzzle the press he would like to see all of that done but he knew he would have to do things in a certain order and he would not be able to let anyone from the Order know what he was up to. "Thank you Draco. Could you set up an appointment with him for me? I want to have all my ducks in a row before I go to the DMLE." He then turned back to the dark man in the room. "Severus, may I ask a favor of you?"
"Of course Harry, what is it?" Severus asked.
"Will you check the house I lived in for any blood wards. Actually I would like to know what wards are there if any at all," Harry stated.
Severus nodded. "I will be able to do that once we are finished with our discussion. May I ask why you want me to check on them?"
"Because I think Dumbledore lied to me about them," Harry told him. "He told me there were blood wards there based off my mother's sacrifice for me. So long as I lived with a relative that shared blood with my mother I would be protected still. That is the reason he told me he kept sending me back there, year after year, even though I begged him to let me live elsewhere. I'm worried that if I go to charge my family or try to become emancipated that Dumbledore will try to prevent either from happening. If he does then I want evidence of his wrong doing to use against him."
"Harry I take it you do not want Dumbledore or the Order to know where you are?" Severus asked. Seeing the boy nod he sighed. "I will do what I can to prevent them from realizing that you are gone, but sooner or later they will discover you are missing. Once they do, however, I will not tell them where you are. Before I go to check out the wards there is one other thing we need to discuss. When I did my scans of you last night I found two blocks on your magic." He heard Draco gasp at that but he paid attention to Harry who now looked stunned and resigned at the same time as if he wasn't totally surprised by this news. "The one block is magical and was placed upon you years ago. The other one is natural. I'm not sure what it is blocking but I can tell you that it appears to be a bonding block. In other words until you find and mate with your soul-mate it will not be released. Most creature inheritances work this way, however, I do not know of any that ran in the Potter line nor does this appear like any creature inheritance I have seen before."
"So let me get this straight. He has one block that is nature based and hasn't come available yet but the other someone placed on him? You mean he is even more powerful than he is now?" Draco asked in shock. He knew Harry was already very powerful so could only imagine how he would be without a block on him. "Who the bloody hell put the block on him?"
"Dumbledore...it was him wasn't it?" Harry said, his voice cracking with emotion. His memories went back to the night when Dumbledore had told him what the prophecy was and how he'd caused everything about the office to explode. He remembered seeing Dumbledore looking a bit nervous at what he'd done. Was he worried his block was dissolving? Is that why he sent him back to the Dursleys and told him he had to stay there all summer? Or was the old twinkling goat hoping he'd be beaten into submission and would then gratefully follow him?
"The magical signature does match Dumbledore's," Severus stated. "Now Harry I can remove the block. It will be painful for you when I do so however the pain would be brief. It will also be taxing for both of us. I would rather wait to allow you to recharge some of the energy you have lost before depleting it again. You do not seem surprised that it was Dumbledore who did this to you," Severus added noting the look on the boy's face.
"You're right I'm not. I've had a lot of time to think recently and I've come to realize not only doesn't Dumbledore care about me but he's been manipulating me practically my whole life," Harry stated sadly. He'd thought at one time of Dumbledore being a great man and one who cared about him, as Harry, not as a weapon to be used to destroy the Dark Lord. He was so wrong and the emotional knife twisted in his heart at the betrayal he felt. He didn't worry about the other block Severus mentioned right now. Oh he had questions about it, like how he went about finding this soul-mate, but that could wait. It wasn't as pressing as the rest.
Severus was not surprised either. He'd come to realize just how manipulative the old windbag was, but also that Dumbledore would do whatever he had to for what he decided was "The Greater Good" for the wizarding world. Standing up Severus looked at Harry. "I will allow you to stay down here for now so long as you rest and do not use any magic. You may get up with Draco's assistance to go to the loo, but other than that I do not want you up for any reason; am I clear?"
"Crystal clear sir," Harry said with a slight grin. "But I do have one question; how can I do magic here? I'm underage still."
"Father had this place warded so that underage magic won't be detected. Of course once we get you emancipated that won't matter. You'll be considered an adult in all things," Draco stated. He thought about the stuff he'd seen in Harry's room and frowned. Tinsey should have brought Harry's wand to him and even if not awake she would have left it on the bedside. He had not seen it there. "Harry, I don't remember seeing your wand," He told him.
"That's because Uncle Vernon broke it," Harry said fighting the tears that burned in his eyes as the memory of that day washed over him. "He...he tried to destroy everything I had but my trunk is spelled so that only I can open it and it is fire proof. He couldn't destroy anything in there, but everything else was available which were only two things; my wand and Hedwig. He took Dudley's Smelting Stick and began swinging it at the cage. When that didn't work he let her out into the room, but she couldn't escape," Harry broke off as tears slid down his face. He gasped in air as he tried not to break down completely. "He killed her. He beat her to death. I tried to stop him and that's when he chained me to the bed. When she was dead he just stood there and laughed. He took my wand and broke it before throwing it on top of her body. He left but came back with a small grill. He forced me to watch as he burned them both to ashes." By now he was sobbing at the memories of losing his familiar and his wand. He didn't say how Uncle Vernon had rubbed the ashes into his face or the fact that he'd seen the phoenix feather from his wand reform and how Uncle Vernon started cutting it up to be thrown out. He wrapped his arms about himself as he continued to cry.
Draco felt sick at hearing what that whale of man had done. He wanted to go back and punish him far worse than he had so far but right now Harry needed him. He moved to the couch and took him in his arms trying to comfort him. "I'm so sorry," he told him. He felt Harry wrap his arms about him and hang on for dear life. He reached up with one hand and began stroking the dark hair in a soothing caress hoping he was doing the right thing. He looked over Harry's head to see his godfather standing there. Although the man wasn't showing any outward emotion on his face Draco could see the anger in his eyes and how it seemed to roll off him in waves.
"I shall go see about those wards," Severus stated tersely. He would also pay a visit to the Dursleys and perhaps teach them some respect for other people's belongings. "Take care of him Draco."
"I will," Draco said softly as he continued to hold the crying teen. He watched his godfather leave knowing that the man would do more than just check the wards. He had the feeling the Dursleys were going to wish they had never met Severus Snape. His attention went back to Harry and the fact that he was still crying. "Harry I won't let them hurt you ever again. I promise," he whispered to the boy in his arms. It was a promise he intended to keep no matter what he had to do.
