Hermione left the hospital wing the next afternoon. She was surprised to find the potions master there to escort her. She kept up to the older man’s strides, even though she felt rather weak. She didn’t complain as the Professor’s steps were beginning to pull her strength. She moaned with pain as her stomach protested too much movement.
Snape looked over his shoulder at the young woman behind him. He slowed his steps, sighing with feigned impatience. He let the young woman catch with him then wrapped his arm around her shoulders. She was trembling lightly, but he was sure it was more from fatigue than fear. As they passed a bench in the hallway, he sat her down.
“I’m sorry if I am moving too quickly for you, Miss Granger. I know you are recovering from yesterday.” However cold-hearted he seemed, Snape could never help but feel for the students. He may have seemed hateful to Harry, but he simply wanted to push the teen to be the best he could.
“Is Harry okay? Ron came to visit me this morning and said that he didn’t return to the dorm last night.” Hermione laid her head back against the stone and closed her eyes. “Maybe I should have stayed there. Madame Pomfrey tried to get me to.”
Snape carefully observed the girl. Her brown hair seemed limp as it hung around her pale face. He reached over and lightly touched her, feeling fever on her skin. It was obvious she never ate any of the candies, and that she was truly sick.
“I’m sure she has her hands full and I understand that you didn’t want to burden her. Harry stayed with me last night. He admitted to eating one of those cursed candies and I wanted to observe him after administering an antidote.” Snape turned to fully look at the girl beside him. “I was also up most of the night with the Weasley twins, trying to figure out what was wrong with those damned treats. I have to give them credit; they are brilliant at figuring things out.”
Snape had come out of his quarters to find the twins and Professor McGonagall in his classroom looking over the chocolates before the evening meal. He gave the twins a pass to come back and resume their work after eating in the Great Hall. He nearly had to shadow their movements in the corridors to prevent them from being caught by Umbridge.
Hermione moaned softly and held her hand to her mouth. Without thinking, Snape conjured a basin and handed it to her just as she began to dry heave. As she held the basin in both hands, he held her hair back. If she had been given a potion for nausea, it either wasn’t strong enough or had been too long since her last dose.
“I’m sorry, Sir. I think I should go back to hospital.” Hermione said weakly after throwing up a small bit of bile.
“No, I’ll take you to my office and give you something. You can lay down there until it takes effect then if you still feel bad, I’ll take you back.” He vanished the basin and its contents then lifted her in his arms and carried her through a few secret passages. When he arrived in his office, he opened a cupboard there and looked over several vials and bottles. He chose one and picked up a cup. He handed her the vial. “Drink this, and I’ll give you a glass of water.”
Hermione nodded and obediently took the potion. When she finished, Snape handed her a chilled glass of water. She drank it slowly though her parched throat begged her for more. Snape stepped into his classroom and transfigured one of the tables into a cozy bed with soft pillows and blankets.
“Thank you, Professor. I’m starting to feel a little better.” Hermione said softly as she climbed into the bed. “Can I ask what the potion was?”
“One of my makings for the stomach flu, it’s to help with fever, chills, aches and nausea. Yesterday, I had thought you’d eaten one of those candies, but I know now that was a wrong assumption.” Snape lowered the lighting in the room and some of the fires used for brewing potions. The room would stay a comfortable temperature.
Hermione snuggled into the bed, sighing softly. She felt rotten, but she figured she just had to let this run its course. The potion she had taken was making her feel sleepy but she lay there thinking for a while.
Snape sat at his desk, reading over and grading essays. He rolled his eyes at some of the ideas that students had come up with. He grumbled as he began correcting. Every so often, he’d grumble a bit louder than he intended and he could hear a muffled giggle come from Hermione. He ignored her for the most part, knowing she’d fall asleep sooner or later.
He sat back in his chair and turned to look out the windows, thinking back over the summer. He’d nearly traded everything in his life for one person.

Harry sat in Snape’s quarters. Had he not seen them with his own eyes, he’d have never believed it. The outer room was a sitting room/library, and then through a well concealed door was his inner sanctum. Shoji screen walls decorated with cranes, cherry trees and Tanami mat floors. The bed was a raised dais to one side, with a fold away wall for enhanced privacy. In a way, it fit Snape perfectly. However complicated the man was; the simplicity of his quarters was refreshing. Harry had the most peaceful night’s sleep since the end of the Tri-Wizard Tournament in the serene environment.
Harry had wondered what had caused Snape to be somewhat kind to him. It was even stranger that Draco was being nice. What Harry didn’t know was that during the summer, when his uncle had abused him over something Dudley and his friends had done, a neighbor’s granddaughter had seen what happened. The poor young girl had been quite traumatized by what she had seen, and had told her Grandmother what happened. Apparently someone at Hogwart’s was contacted and Snape came to check on Harry. The resulting two weeks had him in strict isolation and some memory modification. But for some reason, no other intervention was taken. He remembered things, but it was more like a dream.
Harry heard the sounds of soft footsteps coming closer and he looked up to see Snape standing in the door way.
“Good, you are awake. Did you sleep well?” Snape came over and placed a feather light kiss on Harry’s forehead. “I had hoped you had slept well. I know nightmares are not easy to deal with.”
“I did, Sir. I wanted to ask a question. The Dursley’s neighbor has a granddaughter; I swear I saw her at the start of term feast. I think she was Sorted into your house.”
“Ah, I think you’re speaking of Rebecca McGowan. Unfortunately, I cannot share with you what you want to know, not yet at least. But yes, she is a budding young witch and her Grandmother is fiercely proud of her. Not that the Dursleys need to know that, but she finds them highly offensive. I take it you know her?”
“I do. There were times they had me doing yard work she’d slip a sandwich and water to me, or fruit. She was afraid that they’d do something to her if she reported them so she kept her mouth shut. Now I guess Dumbledore will hear a lot from her now.”
Harry sighed happily as Snape sat down behind him and pulled him close. He loved it when Snape just held him. After the man had found out what had happened to Harry just a day or two into his summer holiday, Snape seemed reluctant to let him go. Of course, he had to keep up his normal mask at school and even at the Order’s HQ.
“I do wish to discuss your trial though. If Dumbledore had only listened, you’d have been with the Weasley’s after you were released from the healers.” Snape bit his lip, afraid to share too much with Harry, but then sighed. “He thinks you are safe with the Dursleys, but he doesn’t realize that you aren’t. Not in the sense you should be, if it were possible, I’d take you in.”
“Professor, I understand what you mean. I know that the Weasleys would take me in with no questions and not expect anything of me. I can’t thank you enough for all you did for me this summer.”
Snape kissed the top of Harry’s head and tightened his hold. Through screaming nightmares and a few accidents, he’d stayed by Harry’s bed side as much as he could. The only times he’d left was for meetings with the Order and a few meetings with the Dark Lord. With both he had to tread so carefully it was about to drive him crazy. Even though he was worried about Harry after the dementor attack, it was a major relief to have him somewhere very safe.
“I need to go check on Hermione. I had her take a potion for the stomach flu and she’s in the classroom. If she’s feeling better I’ll take you both back to your house..”
“Attention all students and teachers, Madame Pompfry has called for a quarantine starting immediately. A small outbreak of the flu has taken over the school. Teachers, any students immediately in your direction are to stay with you. Additional medical staff are currently in route to the school to determine how many students are affected.”
As McGonagall’s voice died out, Snape sighed. “Well, At least you both are safe away from Umbridge tonight…”
