“What time is it?” Draco asked in the darkness.
They’d both given up holding a lumos. After Draco’s failed air spell, they sat in absolute silence. No doubt Granger’s mind was working a hundred miles a minute figuring a way to get out of there. He wondered how long he’d been in the room in the first place.
“It’s just after curfew,” she answered quietly.
“Damn,” Draco muttered. “Missed dinner.”
“How long have you been in here Malfoy?”
“Since last class,” he sighed. No use in fighting right now. He was too weak to make a good showing and as much as he hated to admit it, they needed to work together to get out of this nightmare.
“Did Dumbledore ask you to help fix the room too?”
“What are you on about Granger?”
“Guess not,” she muttered. “Dumbledore said the room was broken. Obviously it is structurally sound, but the magic doesn’t work anymore. He wanted to fix it and asked me to come by and try it from time to time.”
“Well, something bloody well works in this room or we wouldn’t be trapped here. If there was no magic at all, we could blast the door down easily.”
“True,” she said. “I wonder what we can and can’t do.”
“Well, defensive charms are out.”
“Defensive charms on the door are out,” she clarified.
He didn’t have a moment to react before she shouted a stinging hex. Nothing happened but he leapt up and tried to retaliate anyway. He didn’t even know if she’d aimed it at him but it didn’t matter. No magic came sparking out of his wand when he shouted a leg locking curse.
“What the fuck was that for?” he panted.
“Just checking,” she sighed. “We can’t use defensive magic period.”
“You bloody well tried to sting me.”
“I aimed at the wall, Malfoy,” she said in irritation.
Draco felt a little sheepish but he refused to apologize. Instead, he muttered something about it being dark but not wanting to keep his wand lit.
Hermione had an idea. She knew that whatever fire spell Malfoy tried to cast had failed miserably. However, they did need light…and warmth. She was starting to berate herself for sneaking out without her robes or a cloak. All she had on was a jumper and some jeans. Fire was going to be a necessity, or at least a warming charm. She concentrated, trying to think as loudly and clearly as she could. If the room understood that she didn’t want to burn it down, maybe it would allow it.
Draco jumped when a little blue flame appeared on the floor. “How in the hell did you manage that?”
“Easy,” she said. “I simply told the room that I didn’t want to harm it…and that we desperately required light and heat.”
“So it is still the Room of Requirement,” Draco said thoughtfully. “It just can’t conjure anything we require.”
“Precisely,” she said. “I think it will let us either create or transfigure anything we absolutely require, as long as we don’t hurt it.”
“Never thought of it as having feelings.”
Hermione ran her hands along the stone wall. “The castle is sentient in a way. It likes to play, what with the shifting stair cases and all. It has lots of little alcoves and niches for people to hide in, some seeming to appear out of thin air. During the battle, it seemed to come alive, protecting those who couldn’t protect themselves.”
Draco didn’t realize he’d starting rubbing the stones on the wall until he hit a particularly sharp one. What Granger said made some sense. He remembered back to the war, all the hundreds of times he’d thrown himself in front of curses and hexes to spare someone else. When he didn’t have a shield up, some stray rock would get in the way of a spell. Perhaps the castle had been protecting him in its own way. He felt a little warmer towards the place now, not that he would admit it.
Hermione watched Malfoy caressing the stones. He was obviously lost in thought, his eyes staring at the walls without seeing. She would put money on him remembering the war. It made her curious, but she didn’t want to bring it up. If he got snippy with her, she couldn’t exactly walk away. No, no matter how much it irritated her, they had to get along until they could get out of there and go their separate ways.
“We have to get a message to someone that we’re trapped in here,” she said.
Draco shook his head to will away the memories. “How exactly are we going to do that Granger? I don’t have any parchment or a quill, do you?”
“No.”
“Then we can’t charm a letter. There are no owls in here, no floo. I don’t have a two way mirror, do you?”
“No.”
“Then about the only thing we can do is cast a sonorous and hope someone hears us shouting.”
“It’s a thought,” Hermione said. “We’re not too far from Gryffindor tower.”
“Granger, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but the castle walls are thick. Voices don’t exactly travel very well.”
“Do you have a better idea? I mean, maybe Snape could hear us. He is a vampire after all.”
“He’d have to be in the castle for that,” Draco growled.
“Oh…” Hermione trailed off. She hadn’t thought about that. “I suppose he’s out feeding.”
“He only feeds once a week Granger, but he’s out every night.”
“Why?”
Draco shrugged. He didn’t really want to get into it right now. “Let’s try shouting Granger. I want to get out of here.”
Hermione rolled her eyes and cast, shouting at the top of her lungs, Malfoy joining her. They screamed until their throats were raw and all they managed to do was make their ears ring and their heads hurt. There were no footsteps, no shouts back, no notes shoved under the door. Nothing.
“How long before Pothead and Weaselbee discover their princess is missing?” Draco asked.
Hermione glared at him but she didn’t have the strength to keep it up. She was tired, her throat was sore, and she was getting rather cold despite the little fire still glowing brightly. Maybe if she just sucked it up, they’d get out of here and she could hex Malfoy good and proper and never see him again.
“They probably won’t notice until morning when they send Ginny to come drag me out of bed,” she mumbled without thinking. She was glad it was too dim for Malfoy to see her blush when he quirked an eyebrow at her. To his credit, he didn’t say anything, just shook his head and flopped down on the ground, holding his head in his hands.
“Any other ideas then Granger? If they can’t hear us, we have little hope of anyone discovering where we are.”
Hermione wracked her brain for any spell that might get a message to someone. There was the protean charm, but she hadn’t carried her DA coin since the war. All usual methods of communication were impossible. No one could hear them. There had to be something that would get through the door. It wasn’t impenetrable or the air wouldn’t have escaped. What was small enough to fit under the crack of the door? Magic, of course… that was it!
“I’ve got it!” she cried. “EXPECTO PATRONUM!”
AN: I'm glad everyone is enjoying, though I wonder if Luminari has been peeking ahead at my chapters. ;) I wasn't originally planning on making Snape a huge part of this story. (I know, I can hear you all gasp in shock right now.) However, I do know why he looks so sad and if you guys are interested, I'll add it in. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. I love them soooo much that I sat down and wrote most of the next chapter of Fooling Fate after reading them. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time...love you guys.
