Chapter 4
Nicole spent the first few weeks of summer holidays in blissful silence. Severus had put up the wards around his house to block out the emotions of the surrounding people. Harry spent a few weeks with her before heading to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.
At the end of the school year, Harry was invaded by the Dark Lord Voldemort. Flashes of spending time with Nicole and his other friends were seen by Voldemort, causing him to investigate who she was and find out her relationship with Harry. He thought maybe she might be used to get to Harry. He just had to figure out how to use her.
During Nicole’s sixth year of school, Harry and two of his friends never showed. They were off hunting things to destroy the Dark Lord with. Nicole wished her brother well when he told her that he would not be at school. She had no idea what he was looking for, though. That year, she decided to ride the train to school again. She wanted to experience it again before she wasn’t able to. As she sat on the train, talking with her friends, the train came to a stop well before it should be arriving at school.
A couple of men in masks entered her compartment on the train. They looked around, found her watching them and grabbed her arms. Turning, they disapparated with her, leaving her friends gaping after them. The train continued on the journey to Hogwarts, minus Nicole. Once the students were sitting in the Great Hall having their feast, a voice came across for them all to hear.
“I have her. Send Potter to me and she will not be harmed. Send Potter to me and she will live. She is very lovely, like her mother, I wouldn’t want to scar her. I will unless you send Potter to me,” a slithery voice hissed.
Severus whipped his head around from his stare down with McGonagall and looked through the confused faces of the students at his house table. He did not find the pair of green eyes that he was looking for. He did not see the dark red curls atop her head, did not see the beautiful face of his daughter. He stood to get a better look and still not seeing her, slump back down into his chair. At this point, he didn’t care who knew what. His daughter was missing, and Harry was not here. Minerva McGonagall surveyed the Great Hall, trying to figure out which student was missing. She noticed the Harry, Hermione and Ron were missing from the Gryffindor table. Luna Lovegood was missing from the Ravenclaw table; Nicole Evans was missing from the Slytherin table. She didn’t notice that anyone was missing from the Hufflepuff table. Wondering who the voice was talking about, she turned to Severus.
He looked broken, dejected, horrified. The longer she stared at him, the worse he looked. Leaning over to him and placing a hand on his shoulder, “Severus, do you know who he has?” she asked.
Looking up at her, surprised that she was standing so close, he nodded his head. “Nicole,” was all he said.
“Silence, everyone. I know that was a bit disturbing, but it’s nothing to worry about. You are safer here than you would be anywhere else. Do not worry, everyone just head off to bed and we will begin classes tomorrow as scheduled.” McGonagall told the group, dismissing them off to bed. “Severus, join me in my office, please.” Even though she was not the headmaster, so she had no place to give order, she knew that he was not in a right state of mind. Snape had been given the position when Dumbledore was killed at the end of the last school year. He stood and followed her to her office. “What do you know, Severus? You must tell me so that we can all be prepared.”
He sighed, “Well, I suppose you’ll find out soon or later. Nicole Evans is Harry Potter’s little sister. I raised her from birth and have kept her under the Dark Lord’s radar, but apparently he has found out about her and captured her to lure Potter to him. I suppose it is a good thing that he’s not here to hear this. I guess they took her off the train. I left her there earlier this morning. She wanted to ride it one last time,” he explained, running a hand over his face. Turning to look at Minerva, “She’s my daughter, even if not by blood. I raised her, I loved her, I protected her, until now. What she must think of me. What she must be thinking right now. She’s not like other witches. She must be in such agony.” At McGonagall’s questioning look, “She is an empath and a seer of sorts. She can feel other people’s emotions and she’s gotten good at suppressing those feelings to be able to concentrate. She can also get visions from touching objects or people. This doesn’t happen often; usually it has something to do with finding someone or helping someone in trouble. Now, she’s the one in trouble and there’s no way for me to find her from here. The Dark Lord will have her well hidden, I’m sure.”
“Oh, Severus, why did you never tell anyone about her? We could have helped protect her,” she told him. “I assume that Albus knew,” at his nod, she continued, “Please allow me to look into some things with the Order. We may be able to track her down.”
“You don’t understand, Minerva. She’s a special witch, not only does she have these special powers, she is Harry Potter’s sister. That alone makes her very valuable to him. He’s not going to let just anyone know where she is. He will be keeping her under a very close watch. It won’t be easy to get close to her. I’m in his inner circle, and he hasn’t contacted me to tell me about her at all.” Severus began pacing the room, unable to sit still. “How do we contact Potter? How can we tell him not to pursue her? He would only be running straight into the Dark Lord’s trap for him.”
“There’s not any way to contact him. He’s in hiding, hunting for something. He never said what he was looking for, only said it would help in the fight against Voldemort. I will contact the Order and see what they can find out. You see what you can find out on your end. We will get her back, I promise,” McGonagall told him.
Severus stared at her for several moments before nodding and leaving her office. ‘Oh, Nicole, where did he take you? What is he doing to you? I’m so sorry that I got you into this mess. I promise that I will find you.’ He thought to himself while pacing his living area. There was a knock on his door, causing him to stop mid-step and look curiously at the door. Cautiously opening it, he found Draco Malfoy standing there.
“He has Nicole, doesn’t he?” Draco asked.
Severus nodded and allowed the boy to enter. “What do you know?”
“Nothing. I don’t know where he would have her. I’m not exactly in his good graces anymore, am I? I know she holds a special place in your life. I also know that she’s involved with Potter somehow. I’m not sure how, though. She always seems to be in pain when in the Great Hall. Why is that?” the blonde boy asked.
Severus sighed, “She has special powers, Draco. You can’t tell anyone, though. I must have your oath that anything said here in this room will go no further. The Dark Lord cannot know any of this. It is a matter of her safety that this remains unknown to him. You even have to keep this out of your mind when around him.”
“You have my oath, Uncle Sev. I will not utter a word of this to anyone, and I will keep all thoughts of this out of my mind when around the Dark Lord,” Draco vowed.
The professor nodded at his godson’s vow, “Very well. Nicole is a very special witch. She has a set of powers unheard of in our world. She is an empath; she can feel other’s emotions. That is why she seems to be in pain all the time in big crowds. She is also a seer of sorts; she gets visions when touching an object or a person. The big thing to know is that she is Potter’s sister. I raised her from birth and have kept her hidden away from everyone until she turned 11 and Dumbledore found her name on his roll. This information cannot go any further, Draco. Do you understand why?” Severus quickly explained about Nicole.
“Yes, sir, I understand why. I will help locate her. Even though we haven’t been the best of friends, I have admired her. She has always held a special place in my heart,” Draco told him.
Severus watched him, knowing that he was speaking the truth. The boy had never been able to lie to him.
