Note: Okay, so I think I have this whole story mapped out in my brain right now, and I'm thinking it's going to be pretty bad ass. I kind feel like this idea is right up there with my story about Adrien Snape. lol. It's that genius. Well... Maybe not genius, but yeah... I've been up for 72 hours. I should really stop being an insomniac. O.o
The next few weeks were lovely to say the least. Hermione and Severus explored every nook and cranny in Diagon Alley, yet made it a point to steer clear of Knockturn Alley. She didn't want to take him anywhere near any place that would potentially have Death Eaters lurking about, searching for prospects to recruit. She knew the only reason he was ever pulled into the ranks was because he was a young, vulnerable, impressionable teen who was very mislead in life. She hated his parents for that. It was mindblowing to her, the fact that his parents didn't seem to love him enough to try to instill better ideals in him. All Severus had ever known was hurt, abuse, and loneliness.
Yet, as the weeks progressed, and they spent more and more time together, it was becoming more apparent to her that she was slowly achieving her goal. To first, make him happy; show him that there was more to life than what he had experienced so far. He seemed genuinely happy; most of it being owed to the fact that Hermione didn't make him go back to his parent's house. Neither his mother or father even tried to find him. The idea was sad, but Severus wasn't about to complain about it. They were just two young, normal people enjoying their lives before their last year of school.
Though, September first came quickly. It was Tuesday, August thirtieth. Hermione sat in the room she had been sharing with Severus, going over everything in her head, pouring over lists on parchment as well. Severus seemed to be doing the same, as he sat in the corner, looking deep in thought.
"Fuck..." he muttered suddenly, causing Hermione to look up and around. "What's wrong, Sev?"
Severus shifted uncomfortably in the wicker chair. "I er... Have to go back to my parent's house..." Hermione watched as what little color he had gained, drained from his cheeks. Her heart sank at the sight. He was clearly terrified. "I'll go with you... How about we go tonight after they go to bed? He won't hurt you if I'm there with you."
"I wouldn't put it past him..."
"Well, we aren't going to let him, are we?" Hermione smiled reassuringly. "I've dealt with much more frightening things than an angry abusive father... It will be fine, Severus.. I promise."
Severus heaved a heavy sigh and shrugged slightly. "Okay then..."
------
Night fell, quite sooner than Severus wanted it to. Checking his pocket watch, he noted that it was nearly eleven o'clock. His parents would surely be in bed by that time. Grasping Hermione's hand, she gave an assuring nod before he apparated them right outside of his house.
Hermione remained quiet as Severus walked to the door. Giving it a tap with his wand, he was able to disable the wards, and the two of them quietly stepped inside. "My room is up the stairs..." he told her quietly. "I know." she whispered back.
Quietly and cautiously, they ascended the stairs. Arriving at the top, Severus hastily flicked his wand toward his parent's bedroom door, casting a silencing charm so they would (hopefully) be none the wiser.
Entering his room, he lit the candles all at once. Hermione peered through the light; her eyes still adjusting to the sudden burst. She surveyed the bedroom. It hadn't changed at all. Everything was black or silver, save for the carpet which appeared to be a light grey color. "Why so much black?" she whispered as Severus began rummaging through his belongings to pick out what he needed the most. "I've always meant to ask you. You never were a very colorful person." she grinned as he shot her a look. He shrugged. "It's just easier I suppose."
"Well, I won't ask you to brighten your tastes. I love you the way you are." she whispered, flopping down on the bed, sighing as he continued to go through his closet, drawers, and the desk in the corner of the room.
"You keep saying you love me... Not that I don't appreciate it... But... Forgive me, it's a bit strange, seeing as how... No one has ever said that to me before. Not one person." Severus said as he sat down beside her outstretched legs, reading over a piece of parchment.
Hermione took a deep breath. "I suppose it may come from a deep regret that I carry. I am deeply in love with you in the future, and I was always too afraid to tell you. When you were gone... It was all I could think about. That I didn't put voice to the feeling, when it was obvious you so desperately needed to know someone did. I can stop telling you if you like... But as long as you know it now, that is all that matters."
Severus shook his head, suddenly feeling the urge to kiss her again. They hadn't since that one time, two weeks prior to this moment. He really wasn't sure why. "I didn't ask you to stop, Hermione... I just wanted you to know that, in case my er... reaction isn't what you desire."
Hermione smiled. "I think I'm quite used to your reactions by now. Honestly, you really aren't much different from now to then. Only, now... You talk a bit more... That's about it."
"Only to you. Once we get to school, you'll see what I mean. I used to talk to Lily all the time, until... Well, I'm sure you know that, as well. You are the only person I have never had to explain myself to." Severus turned to her and smiled slightly, but it dissippated quickly as a knock came down on the bedroom door.
"Fuck, hide!" he hissed at Hermione, who immediately toppled from the bed to hide on the side, hidden from sight of the door. Severus cautiously walked to the door as if a snake was behind it, ready to strike. When he cracked the door open slightly to peer out, Hermione heard a woman's voice.
"Severus? I saw the candlelights below the door... Are you staying for the night?" his mother asked. It was rather curious. Hermione knew that his mother never really cared for him much. Maybe she was different to him when out of sight of his father.
"No. I'm not staying. I've come to pick up some things so I can make my way to Hogwarts in two days. Will that be all then?" Severus asked. Hermione had to stifle her need to giggle at the same familiar bored tone in his words that she knew so well. She peeked over the bed, confident that the room was dark enough to shield her from sight and watched as Eileen pushed the door open.
Severus stood, looking rather dismayed and quite saddened with the state of his mother. Again, Hermione stifled a gasp, finally catching sight of the woman's pale face; a large purple bruise, spanning from the lower right side of her jaw, all the way up and around her eye. Below the sleeves of the black night shirt she wore, large finger-shaped bruises could be seen around her thin arms.
"Oh, God, mum..." Severus groaned, helping her into the chair close to his bedroom door. Hermione watched as he gently touched her face. Eileen hung her head, staring down at her hands in the soft glow of the candlelight. Hermione was prepared to feel sorry for her, until she heard the woman speak again. "This is... This is all your fault, Severus..."
Hermione's eyes widened with outrage that she wanted to put voice to, but she knew it would just make things harder on Severus. She watched as he slowly pulled his hands back from her person. As if she was no longer there, Severus returned to his task without saying another word. He candidly handed Hermione small objects and some large here and there to transfigure to fit into her bag.
Once he was finished picking his room for his belongings, he grasped Hermione's hand to help her from the floor, uncaring if his mother saw her. Eileen remained silent, not looking up through the curtain of straight black hair falling around her and with a slight *crack,* they disapparated.
Hermione was suddenly flat on her back, lying upon sand. She stared up at the night sky, seemingly unable to hear anything, but the sound of waves slowly came to her as she sat up, looking around. "Where are we?" she whispered to Severus who was now sitting on the ground at her right.
"It's all my fault." he whispered, shaking his head. "It's all my fucking fault..." his voice broke and he began to sob as he repeated it, rocking back and forth slightly. Hermione sprang to her knees, crawling closer to him. To her surprise, given his current state, Severus let her lovingly embrace him. He melted into her touch as she wrapped her arms tightly around him, nuzzling her face into his hair until her lips were pressed against his ear. "That is not your fault, Severus..." she whispered. "Not one of those marks on your mother is your fault. Don't you let her say that to you. Your mother and your father both need help." she reconciled.
"But she,-... she feels like it's my fault." he sobbed. "Ugh, you have no idea what it's like. I've grown up, expected not to show any emotion because my parents can't stand me when I'm happy or angry, or saddened. I am the very reason for their unhappiness, personified. Why didn't you just let me stay gone, Hermione? Maybe I wanted to die in the future... Fuck knows, I'd have no problem believing why, if so."
"Because I wanted to change your life...." she whispered, drawing her arms tighter around him. Severus held onto her arm with a death grip as his body shook with the force of his distress. He let it out for a bit longer before he became eerily quiet, and still. Hermione held tight to him, pressing her front against his back, as they both watched in the dark while the waves rolled and crashed lazily against the shore.
"You said... I could have you... Keep you forever..." Severus whispered. He felt Hermione nod and he pushed on. "What is going to happen when you're born?"
Hermione froze; her breath catching in her throat. How could she forget about that? Her mind immediately went to work, mapping out the possibilities of just what would happen. Clearly, her being born wouldn't make her disappear.
"I suppose... When I am born... I will live my life all the way up until I am seventeen, and then I, as I am right now... will most likely disappear, and we'll be returned to my time... but everything will be different..."
"But you go back in time at seventeen." Severus said, rubbing his eyes on his sleeves.
"If you're alive, Severus... I won't feel the need to go back in time when I am seventeen. And I will still love you as intensely, then, as I do now... Though I dare say,-" Hermione chuckled. "You'll have to contend with a seventeen year old girl, making a really poor show of trying to get your attention. Just promise me, that I'll have it." she whispered, kissing his cheek. Severus closed his eyes for a moment, and Hermione was delighted to hear him begin to laugh.
"What?" she asked.
"I suppose I don't get a choice of whether or not we're twenty something years apart..."
"But you'll have me for the next nineteen years, either way, Severus. I'm not due to be born for another two years and twenty-one days... But when the time comes... I'll figure everything out..." she promised him, giving him a tight squeeze.
"I love you, Hermione..." he whispered, squeezing her arm. "Thank you for wanting so desperately to change my life."
