Chapter 4
A Drunken Night
Hermione tossed and turned, unsettled in her sleep. She was having unexplainable dreams. Hot, burning, sexy dreams. Dreams so heated they could set the sheets on fire. Dreams starring a man with long platinum hair. Hermione was feeling herself trying to wake up, and yet her brain was clutching onto the last vestiges of sleep, seemingly unwilling to give up the dreams that were burning her up.
Hermione groaned and rolled over, rubbing her eyes and trying to get her bearings. She bolted up when she realized she was in an unfamiliar room, in a bed with black silk sheets, dressed in a Slytherin Quidditch shirt that smelled like a man. Oh Merlin, what have I done? she thought despairingly. She suddenly realized that there was noise in the adjoining room with and she called out "Lucius?"
"Granger, that's the worst thing I could ever hear being called out from my bed," Draco appeared in the doorway, brushing his teeth and laughing.
"Draco!" Hermione exclaimed, relieved beyond measure, "why am I in your bed? Wearing your clothes? What the hell happened last night?"
"Once us boys got started on the fireworks, you got started on the drinks, which led to you getting absolutely plastered, and I didn't think your parents would appreciate you stumbling home stinking of alcohol, so Flower dressed you in some of my old Quidditch gear, and I put you in here, so I could sleep in the chair and keep an eye on you. Weaselbee would kill me if I let you choke on your vomit," he teased.
"Oh, thank Merlin! I was so disoriented when I woke up!" Hermione responded, yawning and stretching.
"I noticed that. Why were you calling for my father, anyway?" Draco asked curiously.
"Well, I had been dreaming about last night, and the fire, and the last thing I remembered was talking to your father," Hermione spit out nervously, fully aware she was giving a lame excuse, and terrified Draco would call her on it.
"Well then! Care for some breakfast? Hair of the dog that bit you?" he asked cheerfully, Hermione missing the look he gave her.
"Ugh, food sounds terrible!" she groaned, rolling over.
All of the sudden, Flower winked into the room, "Up, up, up Missy Granger! You too Master Draco! Master says you and whatever tart is in here must makes an appearance at the breakfast table!" she urged.
"Well that's something new, Granger's my tart. Come on darling, we're being summoned by his highness," Draco laughed, swatting at Hermione playfully.
Hermione rolled back over to see Draco and Flower staring at her and realized she was facing a losing fight, so she dragged herself out of bed, tightened the string on the Slytherin sweatpants, and charmed her hair into a semblance of a ponytail and began following after Draco.
"Why did you have to put me in Slytherin clothes any way, Draco? I know you must have plain t-shirts and sweats in that massive closet of yours!" Hermione grumbled, stumbling down the stairs.
"A woman does not sleep in my bed without getting a little Slytherin on her," Draco joked, turning to wink at Hermione, his eyes lighting up at his double entendre.
"Ugh, Malfoy you are incorrigible!" Hermione snapped back, swinging one arm to slap him but missing him by a mile in her haze.
She could hear Lucius' deep voice as they approached the dining room, and then heard Draco jibe as he crossed into the room first, "Just wait until you see who's following behind me, Father."
"Draco, now you know I don't like you having strange girls staying the night at the Manor - -" Lucius responded, stopping short when he saw Hermione coming into the room, barefooted, wearing Draco's clothes with rumpled hair. His jaw tightened and his eyes turned steely gray as he coldly appraised her and bid her good morning.
Hermione sat across from Draco, put her head down, and held out her coffee cup, knowing Flower would be along soon to mercifully fill the cup. With her head down, she missed the owl soaring into the room towards Draco.
Draco removed the note, read quickly and then looked up, "Shite, I've got to go, disaster at the office. Hermione, will you be all right to get home, or should I side-along you now?"
"Draco, I'm not an invalid, and I'll be fine," she said looking up and then looking back down quickly. "Finish your breakfast, and then head home. Shower first if you want," he said teasingly, "I'd kiss you goodbye, but I can't smell like bourbon this early," he laughed. "Goodbye, Father. I'll catch up with you over lunch," Draco called out as he left for the apparition point.
Hermione was so engrossed in her coffee and busily wishing for a Sober-Up potion that it took her several minutes to realize that Lucius was staring at her with icy eyes. "Um, Lu- - Mr. Malfoy, is something wrong? You seem upset." Hermione asked timidly.
"Why wouldn't I be upset that my son was sleeping with an engaged woman under my roof last night? Why would it anger me that his supposed friend waits until her fiancé is gone and then goes after my son? No, I can't see where that I would bother me at all." Lucius ranted at her stormily.
Hermione suddenly felt herself filled with a white-hot rage as she stood and burst out at him, "For your information, we didn't have sex! I slept in his bed and he slept in the chair to keep an eye on me! Like a good friend should do! Like it's any of your business! And why, pray tell, do you care about my status or who I'm sleeping with?" and with that, she stormed out of the room, headed for the apparition point. At that moment, she was so angry she could have Apparated home naked, and she found herself home, still clad in Slytherin lounge wear and storming up the stairs, more than ready for a hot shower to wash away the previous night.
Back at Malfoy Manor, Lucius found himself alone at the breakfast table with his thoughts. The frustrating brunette had made an excellent point: why did he care if she was sleeping with Draco? Why indeed.
