AN: Here's update number two.
n: Once again, thanks for pointing out some snags in my story line. No, Roger is not getting Barney, but he'll be well taken care of. I'll consider giving Roger a pet in his part of the story he and Hermione have cameos in. Have you figured out which that will be? They'll be featured along with Neville and Millie and Theodore Nott.
Chapter Four: Hogwarts Days and a Few Long Nights
Sirius and Snape had to floo into the school, since the Black lord's condition warranted special care. The potion's master went first, so he could catch his lover if he tumbled out awkwardly. Sirius stepped through with all the finesse of a pure-blood heir, possibly showing up Lucius Malfoy, had the blond man been next through the floo.
“I've got to check my stock of ingredients, will you be okay on your own?” Snape asked and Sirius rolled his eyes in a very muggle fashion.
“I can take care of myself, Severus. Go.” and the Kumiho turned and headed up to the third floor, where his class met. Severus watched him go, noting the slight waddle that showed through the glamour Sirius wore.
“I know that, Puppy.” he whispered before going the opposite way.
The next five days consisted of classes, meals, planning lessons and grading papers. The two men would rise early, go to their work and return with just enough energy to change their clothes before falling into bed and dropping off to sleep. It was no wonder that previous conversations were forgotten, or at least let fall for future discussion.
Friday night came at last and they took the return trip in the same manner as their arrival. This time, due to a heavy workload, Sirius did stumble a bit, but his lover caught him before any serious damage could be done.
Once the elves had provided them with dinner, Sirius went out to visit with his charges, and make sure the elves had done a good job in caring for them.
The hippogryphs were sleeping, Buckbeak in a protective position near the door, and Feathers curled up around her eggs. They looked healthy and well fed, so he left them be.
In his other shed, he checked the cages and when he was satisfied, he stopped in front of his latest charge, little Barney. “Hey, guy. You look great. Wanna come out of there?” he cooed and the little bat spread its wings and climbed down to the open cage door. Once out, Barney clawed his way up to Sirius' shoulder and nuzzled against his neck. “Oh, kissing up, eh? Now, what shall we do with you?”
Barney stared at him, tilting his head from side to side and making clicking sounds with his beak. Sirius laughed at the expression. Suddenly, he surged to his feet and lifted the startled bat from his cloak.
“I know exactly what to do. I know a certain dungeon bat who could use a pet. Not that he hasn't got a perfectly tame dog, mind you. It will be so funny to see his expression when he sees you. Like when Harry threatened to get a pet ferret for his Veela mate. Ha Ha! That was great! Come on, Barney.”
Before he returned to the house, Sirius tucked the bat into the case and covered it with a towel. Inside, while Severus was showering, he put the cage on the table in their room and hunted out a ribbon he had saved from Christmas. He quickly tied it around the cage and into a big red bow. When Severus returned, he was sitting on the bed, with a book in his hand, ignoring his gift, that sat directly in view to the potions master.
“What is this?” Severus stopped and continued to towel dry his hair as he stared at the table.
“What do you mean, Severus?” Sirius played innocent, but his lover was hardly convinced.
“This huge red beacon settled directly in my path. Don't be ignorant, Mutt.” Severus banished the towel to the laundry and glared at his mate. “Now, tell me what this is.”
“Well, it has a ribbon, so I'm guessing it's a present.” Sirius crawled across the bed and knelt on the edge, watching his lover with excitement. “Open it, Snape. Don't be a coward. It probably won't bite you.”
“I'm not afraid of your tricks, Mutt. I just wanted to confirm who to blame when trouble starts.” Severus pulled the ribbon, which fell away from the cage and drifted to the floor. Then he lifted the towel and gazed into the cage. Barney opened one eye, tilting his head to peer up at his new master. He chirped happily and Severus raised an eyebrow at his unrepentant lover. “You got me a bat?”
Sirius fell out laughing, rolling on the bed and cawing with delight. He was so busy snorting and guffawing, that he didn't notice the other man casting a spell that transformed the cage into a new one, complete with a fitted black satin cover, a bowl of treats and a new water dish. In the base, there was clean paper and the little bat now hung from a sturdy branch, instead of the upper bars. He moved the cage to a corner, away from the window that was first to receive the suns rays and pulled the cover down.
“Does it have a name?” Severus injected between the other man's laughs and Sirius sobered up and stared at him.
“Barney.” he said, then he sat up and gawked at his mate. “You really like it?”
“It was a gift. From you. What is not to like?”
“It's a bat, Severus. You know, like the kids call you. The dungeon bat.”
“I am well aware of that particular title. I have fostered it, after all.” Severus stripped off his robe and climbed under the covers, not reacting to his lover's stunned expression. “Are you coming?”
“What? Wait a minute. What do you mean you fostered it?”
“The name was originally coined by a Slytherin student, Lothan Grant. I suggested it, to encourage the students to fear me. It has served me well. Now, are you coming to bed?”
“Yeah.” Sirius lifted the covers and put one leg inside, then he froze. “You did not!”
Now, Severus grinned and rolled over, pulling the covers up to his chin. “You are correct. But your face was priceless. And, I'm keeping the bat.”
Three weeks later, as Barney was now traveling to school with them, Sirius was over his shock at the Slytherin's easy acceptance of his gift. He had run out of taunts to get the other man to explain why he did that, so just ignored the whole subject.
He wasn't fooled by the lack of reference to another subject, however. Sirius knew that Severus would bring up the dominance issues again, and he was quite ready for it. He bided his time, paying close attention to the other man, because he knew just how fast Severus Snape was with a spell.
During his twelve years in Azkaban, Sirius had gotten rusty with spells, not having a wand will do that, but since his liberation, he had done a lot of practicing. It was a good thing, too. He would have fallen into the veil had he not been nearly back to true form by then. And now, years later, he was one hundred percent.
Sirius had been an auror, after all. He was no slouch with spells, shields and hexes. His specialty was incarcerus, much as Harry's was expelliarmus. If his lover tried to force the issue, he might find the ropes on the other foot, so to speak.
Severus was looking for a way to broach the subject, especially since he wasn't fond of arguing with the mutt. He had gotten over his enjoyment of tormenting the other man when he discovered how much better it was to have Sirius in agreement with the activities they participated in.
When nothing came to him, Severus decided to let the subject lie, and after the babies were born, they could open negotiations again. In the meantime, he was just too tired to push for his way, or do much else, for a while.
“Severus, what's wrong with you?” Sirius asked one morning, waking his mate from a sound sleep. “Snape!”“I heard you, Mutt.” Severus rolled over and pulled the blankets up to his chin. They were in their apartment, where they stayed while in school, and being in the dungeons, there were no windows to the outside.
“We're gonna be late. You need to get up, Severus. Sev?” when he got no answer, Sirius left the man, pulling his teaching robes closer and storming from the room. Severus had fallen back to sleep and didn't hear the door close.
When he woke again, his eyes felt sticky and his head hurt. He was dizzy and felt the nausea welling up in his belly. If he was going to hurl, he wanted to avoid doing so in bed, so he threw back the covers and rolled over, only to find himself restrained.
“Oh, no you don't. Just stay in bed, Severus.” a woman's voice snapped and he growled out his frustration. “You've been out for two days, Severus. Your mate is beside himself with worry. Just lie there and I'll get him.”
“Need to get to the . . .”
“What? What do you need?” the woman coaxed and the man slammed his hands against the mattress.
“Nauseous. Need to throw up.” he snarled and found a pan thrust into his hands as she moved away.
“Use that. I'll be back with Mr. Black.” She offered before moving out of sight. Not that he was able to see much, with his eyes covered by a bandage, Severus was effectively blind. He could hear the sound of voices coming closer, but only recognized one.
“And you just left him there. Gods, Poppy. He hates to be sick. He's likely to bolt the minute your back is turned. Especially if he needs to puke. Shit!” Sirius said when he found his mate holding a pan like it was covered in slime, his face a ghastly shade of olive green. “I'll help you, Severus. Let's get you to the loo.” he said as he tossed the pan aside and gently pulled the covers away.
Once they had negotiated the path to the bathroom, Severus had expelled the contents of his stomach, which was very little after two days of unconsciousness, and sat back to glare at his lover. Not an easy task, when you are hindered by a large bandage across the face, but Severus Snape could manage easily.
“What happened?” he snarled from where he sat, against the wall of the toilet stall. “Start from the last thing I remember, you trying to wake me up for class.”
“That was two days ago, Severus.”
“I have been informed of that.”
“Okay, you didn't wake up. It's not like you, so I called Remus to help me. When he came in, you didn't even snap or snarl. That's when we knew something was wrong. Why didn't you tell us that you've been sick?”
“I have not been . . ..”
“Poppy says that it would have taken days for you to reach that stage of illness.”
“I have been tired, that's all.”
“Well, she's not sure exactly what you've got, so she's thinking it's something Metamorphagus related. Dora is coming by later, with Andromeda. She had some things as a child, so they were gonna consult.”
“Great.” Severus let his head hit the wall a few times as this news set in. He had never been close to his daughter, and this did not feel like a bonding time for them. “Why are my eyes covered?”
“Oh, yeah. It was weird. There was something oozing out, like Lothagan Potion, and when Poppy went to clean it up, you opened your eyes and . . . . Severus, there was fire in them. It was weird.”
“Fire? An oozing blue discharge and fire? Oh, fuck. Help me up. I need to get out of here.” Severus growled as his lover pulled him to his feet and they made their way back to the bed. Once there, the potions master began to search for his pants, while Sirius hindered him in every way possible. “Look, I know what's wrong with me. I will give you a list of potions that will help, but for the safety of the school, I need to get away from here.”
“Severus, you are scaring me. I'm not in a good condition for you to do that.”
“Puppy, I'm sorry. I had no idea this would happen now, but I can't stop it until it runs its course. Now, help me get dressed and I'll explain to you when we are out of the school. And by no means are you to let Dora within one hundred meters of me!”
Sirius hated this, the lack of control and uncertainty were something that would always dredge up the feelings he had during in time in Azkaban, but he trusted Severus to know what to do, so he pulled the clothes out of the drawer and helped his lover into his pants and trousers. As soon as Severus was clothed, the two men headed for their apartment to collect the things that the Morphagus would need while he recovered.
Without any further delays, the two men landed in their home and Sirius was tucking his mate into bed. Severus had dictated the list of potions for Sirius to acquire and then sent his lover out of the room with orders to keep his distance.
Sirius flooed back to school, went to Snape's store room and gathered everything on the list. Before he could floo back home, Andromeda and Dora rushed up to stop him.
“He's home. He said that he knows what he has, that he needs to be away from here and that you,” here Sirius pointed at his step-daughter, “ are to keep away. I'm guessing it's contagious to Morphs.”
“What about you?” Andromeda glared as she noted his hands filled with potion bottles and a strip of paper. “And what about the babies?”
“He told me to keep back, but he needs these.” Sirius argued and the woman crossed her arms and continued to give him the notorious “Black Family Glare” that he had never quite mastered as a child.
“Give them to me.” She said putting her arms out and waiting while he relinquished the bottles. “I'll go, you stay here. Don't let him follow, Dora.” and the girl held his arm while the woman entered the floo and called out, “Heartridge Hall.”
They were joined by Remus who helped to drag the Kumiho back to his apartment that suddenly felt very empty. Even the squeak of Barney in the corner didn't fill the silent space. Sirius curled up on the bed, exhausted and worried, until he finally fell asleep.
