AN: Here's update # 3
Anon: Thank you.Chapter Four: The Trouble with TwinsSusan watched Blaise squirm as Harry entered the dining room and took his seat at the table. Kreacher popped in and put a plate in front of him so quickly the Italian jerked to the side. Harry looked up from his food and smiled at his family, noting the mood and who was most affected.“Draco is resting. He'll have his meal in his room, later.” he supplied helpfully. “Who's turn is it to watch the babies, tonight?”
“Blaise and Seamus.” Luna answered as she passed the plate of rolls. “You look refreshed, Harry.”
“I feel refreshed, Moonglow. How are you?” Harry loved the way that Luna's wings fluttered when he called her by the special name he'd given her, almost like a Fae blush.
“I'm wonderful. I spent the morning by the pond, visiting with the will-o-wisps and dandelion gnomes. They love it here and are pleased that we've moved in. Some creatures need to be around magic to thrive. Already there are twenty new gnomes due to be hatched.”
Harry had discovered that Luna's imaginary creatures were far from that at all. It was simply that many magic beings had been persecuted by witches and wizards to the point of near extinction and they were careful about who they showed themselves to.
“Tell them I'm pleased for them. If they like, I'll dedicate a larger portion of the gardens to dandelions so they have more room to spread out.” Luna beamed at him and Harry nodded to her, looking around and smiling at his other mates. It didn't take long to notice who looked the most nervous during this meal. “Well, I'm done. Blaise?”
“What?” the Chimaera answered.
“Are you ready to go to the nursery? I thought I'd accompany you and Seamus, to give a hand. I haven't spent near enough time with my babies, with all that's gone on lately.”
“Oh, yeah. Sure.” Blaise pushed away his unfinished food, not really hungry tonight, and rose from his chair.
“I'll be along in a bit. I'm gonna have one more piece of chocolate cake.” Seamus called after them from his place. Harry nodded and smiled, then turned and led the way to the wing where the four tiny Veela were waiting.
“I'm so glad that you are all so helpful to Draco. Four babies, along with everything else he has been taking on, is a very big thing to force on anyone.” Harry chatted as they walked, being as suggestive, cryptic and vague as possible. Letting innuendo fall wherever he could, he was watching the Italian man beside him as they neared the nursery.
“He can take it.” Blaise blurted, and his face flushed with color when he realized what he had said. “He's capable of handling a lot . . . Oh, fuck!”
“Yes, I agree.” Harry said, opening the door and motioning Blaise in front of him. He followed, right on the other man's heels, knowing his breath would be warm on Blaise's neck. “Look at my darlings!” Harry called, the four Veela waving their arms and legs in the cradles even more frantically when they heard his voice, and he scooped up Gaston, spinning around and beaming at Blaise. “Is he a darker yellow than before?”
“He's perfect. François is the one who's darker. Look, less mint and more fern. But, he's still beautiful.” Blaise lifted the other baby and displayed him for his mate, hoping it was an end to the strange conversation they had shared.
“He is. So, how long were you watching?” Harry spoke in a cooing tone and it took a moment for Blaise to realize that the question was directed at him. When he looked at the Chameleonis, Harry's eyes were forest green and intense.
“It's not what you think . . .”
“I think you've invaded Draco's privacy just to satisfy your own voyeuristic tendencies. And to make matters worse, you involved my other mates. Am I close?”
Blaise knew he was beat, so he sighed and shook his head. “No, spot on, in fact.”
“You will make this up to Draco, and to me.” Harry's voice proved that this was not just a Gryffindor do-gooder request. This was his Dominant - giving an order. He reacted exactly the way he had to.
“Yes, Harry. I'll do whatever you want.”
Just then, Seamus came in and went directly to the cradles where Michel and Reynard were starting to get a little fussy. “Did they forget about our little blueberry and peach. Come to Uncle Shea.”
Harry snapped his fingers and Mizzy came in with a tray of bottles, each with a matching ribbon to the baby it was prepared for. Harry took the yellow ribboned bottle and held it for his son, watching Blaise as the other two fed the babies in their arms. When the four little Veela were fed and changed, and Gaston was sleeping peacefully, Harry left the two to clean up the nursery and get the other three to sleep. Blaise sighed when the door closed behind him and Seamus looked up.
“What happened?”
“He knows, and don't worry, he knows it was me. He doesn't blame any of the rest of you. I'm in deep poo.” As if to emphasize this, François grunted and a foul smell rose from his recently changed diaper.
“Literally.” Shea laughed as he rocked the two little Veela across the room.
Susan was waiting when Harry returned from the nursery, a concerned look on her face. Harry steered directly to her, ignoring Cedric and Oliver as they played wizard's chess. Luna and the twins were not in the room.
“I need to talk to you.” the Selkie said and he nodded and followed her to her room.
“If you're worried about the eavesdropping, I know who instigated it. I'm not happy about it, but I'm not mad at . . .”
“That's not it. I'm sorry about that, but it's not what I need to talk to you about.” Susan had two bar stools next to her bed/pool, and she sat on one as Harry came over and took the other.
“So, I'm listening. Don't worry. You can tell me anything.” he told her. When she looked even more worried, he began to have real fear. “You're not leaving me, are you? Nothing happened to the baby?” He reached out and placed his hands on the sides of her belly, just starting to strain her t-shirt.
“No. Oh, Harry. It's not that.” She reached out and took his hands. “I'm coming closer to my seventh month. When I reach a certain point, the baby will require a special kind of care.”
“Whatever it needs. I love you, Susie. Let me help you.”
“It's nothing you can do. It's me. I have to change.” she watched him, looking for his reaction, but it was clear he didn't understand. “Harry, I have to spend the last two months in Selkie form. The whole time. If the weather is good, I could stay in the pool, but I don't want to have it outside. I'll just stay in here. I've already started building my nest.”
“You have a nest? Cool. Can I see it - or is that against the rules?”
“Of course you can. It's over here.” She rose, pulling him by the hand and leading him to the other side of the bed. “Are you sure you're all right with this?”
“I don't have much choice, do I? I don't mind. Whatever you need. Are you going to get moody and try to bite me, like how Draco was near the end? No? Then, I'm good.”
“Well, there is one more thing.” They had reached the nest, though it wasn't much, just a bunch of grasses piled into a wading pool that she had gotten one of the elves to fetch for her. The finished project would be much more elaborate, like a huge sphere that she could climb into and give birth, safe and secure. She would show him that, too.
“This is wonderful, Susie.” Harry turned and smiled at her and she bit her lip, not ready to disappoint him. “No, it is. Please, Susie. Just tell me. Rip off the bandage.”
“What?” She shook her head. “Never mind. I doubt I want to know. Okay, here's the thing. During the time I'm nesting. While I'm in Selkie form. I can't have sex. I can't have you, or anyone, near. It's seclusion, really. I could have an elf pop in, to bring me food, but it would be best to just take the cover off the bed and fill it with fish, until the baby is born.”
Harry's eyes got misty, his lip quivered just a bit, but he took her hand and pulled her closer. “I'll do whatever you need. I don't know how to convince you, if you still doubt that. I love you, Susie. If that's what you need, it's what we'll do. Two months on just fish is a bit drastic, but who am I to complain. If I wanted, I could grow scales and live off field mice, so what's the difference?”
Susan flew into his arms and clung to him, her tears falling onto his shoulder and soaking his shirt. Harry held on until she let go and slid free. “I love you, Harry Potter. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“So, we can still have sex for about six more weeks. I may have to adjust my schedule.” he teased and she laughed and pushed him into the bed, sloshing it and landing on top of him.
Climbing out of a pool bed, without waking a sleeping selkie girl, was a talent that Harry was sure he'd never master. He was buttoning his shirt when he noticed her peeking at him, so he smiled and winked, which was obviously the perfect response.
Susie turned over and curled up, drifting back to sleep as her mate went through the bedroom door. In the hall, Harry turned left and headed for to the twins' room. They hadn't seemed like themselves and he wanted to check on them before going to bed. He was right, since they were yelling at the top of their lungs when he opened the door.
“ . . . and I can't even get a shower without you banging on the door!”
“Oh, like I'm gonna peek at you in the loo. You look just like me, Fred. I could just as easily look inna mirror!”
“Guys?” Harry froze in the doorway, looking around for their wands, just in case it got real. “Fred? George? What's all this abo . . .”
“May look like you, but I'm better endowed. Just ask Harry.”
“Better endowed? Have you been comparing, Fred? For that matter, has Harry?”
Now the two turned to him, looks of anticipation on their faces. He reached into his pocket and put his hand on his wand, just to be sure. “Fred, I'm not sure what's going on, but let's sit down and talk about it, okay?”
“Talk about it? With him? No, I need to get away from him.” Fred stalked across the room to the bathroom door and stood just inside, glaring back at them both. “And I don't need help or company in here.”
“George? Is something bothering you, or Fred?”
“Why no, Harry. What would make you ask that?” George said as he tip-toed up to the door and leaned his ear against it. “He better hurry up.”
“George, come away from the door and talk to me. What are you doing?”
“He's been in there forever. What's taking him so long?”
“It's only been a second, George. Come on over here.” George gave the door one more listen, then slumped across to where Harry sat, on the end of Fred's bed. When he sat down, Harry pulled him closer, taking note of how much larger the bulge across his middle was getting. “What's bothering you, George? Why are you acting this way?”
George put his head on Harry's shoulder and threw his legs over his mate's lap. He wrapped his arms around Harry's waist and cuddled up closer. “I'm lonely without you, Harry. Why are you gone for so long, lately?”
“George, I have to go to work and you're not alone. This house is full of people.”
“But, I want you. Fred wants to leave me all alone and you aren't here. I don't like being alone.”
Harry was about to answer when the door opened and Fred stormed out. He stopped after a few steps and just gawked at the two. “Great! Now he's got you on my bed. I'm not sleeping with everyone in my bed. I'm getting a new room and that's final!”
“Fred! Wait, just a minute.” Harry called as the other redhead started packing some clothes into a bag. “George, why don't you go and brush your teeth, or something, while I talk to Fred?”
“Okay.” George sounded much more perky as he skipped into the bathroom. Harry watched him in silence, his mouth just slightly open. Then, he turned back to Fred and snatched the bag away from him. “Fred, sit down.”
It took a few minutes of glaring to get the other twin next to him, but this time he ended up only able to grab one of Fred's hands and even that got a glare from his mate. “What did he tell you?” Fred asked.
“That he's lonely and you're talking about leaving him. What's going on, Fred?”
“I need some privacy. I've shared a room with him for all of my life. I need to get away. Did you know he's been climbing into my bed at night?”
“I suspected it, after your rant a few minutes ago.” Fred snorted and pulled away, leaning back and shifting away.
“I just want to be alone, sometimes. Is that too much to ask?”
“I'll talk to George and we'll work something out. Don't do anything drastic. At least, not tonight. Promise me, Fred?”
“Fine. But if he gets into my bed, I'm leaving.”
“I've got to go see Cedric. Will you be all right?”
“Go on. We're not babies. We'll be fine. Won't we, George?”
“Of course we will.” George called through the door.
“I knew you were listening. Harry was talking to me. It's not your business, so just leave off, George!” Fred snapped and the door flew open.
“You'll try anything to abandon me. See, Harry. I told you he wants to leave me.”
Harry slipped out before the two Weasleys could draw him back into the middle of their fight and he headed for the kitchen. He needed something stronger than pumpkin juice after that.
“Harry, are you all right?” Oliver stood in the hall, just down from the door to the gardens. He leaned against the wall, his hands in his pockets and his foot tapping nervously. Harry had just poured a drink, after Fred and George and he was not in a great mood.“Is every one of my mates going crazy or afraid to talk to me, all of the sudden?”
“Not afraid. Concerned. You haven't been yourself, lately. I'm worried about how this situation is affecting you.”
“No. I'm not all right. My bride has been kidnapped, I've gotten unhelpful help from someone that I've gone out of my way to assist and now I've got a riddle, a disrespectful mate and a pair of moody phoenixes to deal with.”
“The twins? What's their problem?” Oliver skimmed over the other issue, not wanting to get involved in his mate's discipline problems.
“Fred wants to move to a different room. George wants to share beds with him just to keep him there. It's like they've lost their minds.”
“Fred wants to get away from George?”
“And George has gotten clingy.”
Oliver laughed and Harry rolled his eyes and swallowed his drink. When he had laughed himself out, Oliver stated“One of them is having girls. The other boys. That's the way my two aunties got, just before Fern and Beech were born. Mother said that the different hormones were infusing them. You need to let Fred spend some time with Luna while you give George some extra attention. It worked with my aunties.”
“I'll try anything at this point.”
“Now, about that riddle?”
“I think I have an idea, but I'll need to leave for a bit. I'll go on Monday. Ollivander can't complain, he's up to his elbows in giant dandruff.”
“What?”
“Never mind. I'm going to Hogwarts next week. Want to come with me?”
“Sure. Why Hogwarts?”
“Home, Ollie. It's the first place I've ever called home.”
“Oh!” Oliver smiled then drew himself up and off of the wall. “About disrespectful mates . . . we all watched.” Oliver cringed as Harry glared his way. “Well, all but the twins. They didn't know about it. It was hot, Harry.”
“If I were you, and I'm not, but if I were, I wouldn't let Draco find out about you saying that, ever. Just don't let it happen again. Or next time, I'll figure out how to repay all of you.” and with that warning, Harry handed the Dryad his empty cup and went out to the gardens, where Luna was saying goodnight to her new little friends.
The stars were bright in this part of Scotland, something Harry hardly saw while living in Surrey. He stood in the high grass, looking up at them when Luna slid her arms around his waist and pressed her head against his chest.
“The gnomes said you would be here. Come and meet them.”
He suffered himself to be pulled along, through the dandelions and close to the pond. Just as she had told him, will-o-wisps flew about, darting back and forth from the flowers to the water.
Luna settled in an open patch, pulling Harry down next to her. He looked around and realized why she liked it here. It was beautiful and quite peaceful.
“He's here. Come and meet Harry.” she called out and he smiled at her exuberance. “See, I told you.”
The last was directed at Harry, so he looked down and sure enough there was a group of gnomes, pure white with wreaths of dandelion spores around their heads. Compared to the gnomes from the Weasley gardens, these were beautiful. Their hair reminded him of Draco's and their faces were as serene as Luna. A few smiled and winked at each other, like Fred, George and Shea, when concocting a prank. To one side, there were some that peeked out around the stems of the flowers, shy he supposed, but still smiling, like Cedric when Harry teased him about his new nipples.
“Hello.” he said and the boldest came closer. One, who stepped right up to him and tapped him with a long twig, reminded him of Susan, making sure he was paying attention.
“We greet you among the flowers.” he said.
“Thank you. I greet you . . . eh, among the flowers.” Harry repeated. The bold one was joined by another, who whispered something to him then squinted up at Harry and whispered something more. The bold one turned to the whisperer and shook his head. Harry thought the newest one was somewhat like Blaise, guiding from the shadows.
“We hear that you will allow us to spread into the grasses.” the bold one said and it could have been a question so Harry answered it.
“There is plenty of room for all of us.”
“And when your young grow and come to torment us?” This was a definite questions and Harry concentrated on how to answer it best.
Finally, he said, “I'll ward off this area. The children have plenty of room in other parts of the garden. They won't be allowed to come here. The wards can be set to keep anyone out who has malicious intent toward you.”
“See.” the bold one said to the whisperer. “We have a message for you, Luna's Harry.” When he said this, four other gnomes came from among the grasses, new and brighter than the others. “These are our seers. They are blessed by the pollen and have foretold your family arriving at the stone garden.”
“Hello.” Harry said and the four glowing gnomes came forward.
The bold one pulled the whisperer away and the new gnomes formed a circle, hands clasped, in front of him. As one, their voices rose from the center of the circle, sweet and melodic. Harry was entranced and couldn't pull his eyes away, even when Luna gasped next to him. At the same time, the will-o-wisps flew down, landing on the shoulders of the other gnomes, and lighting the entire area with their glow.
“Heed us, Harry of the Wizards. We bring you a piece of the puzzle that daunts you. Home you go and home you seek, but bear in mind these words we speak. To find the prize for which you run, go back to where this search was begun.”
When the last words were out, the gnomes wavered and the glow was so bright that the two humans had to cover their eyes. When they opened them again, the garden was empty other than them.
“They do that, sometimes.” Luna said, pulling him to his feet and back toward the house.
