Chapter 4
“Harry!” Molly all but shrieked when she saw Sirius and Lucius aiding the young man into the kitchen where they were all gathered for the meeting. Hands flying to her mouth, she felt her eyes sting with tears as she grinned.
Smiling, putting a hand on her arm to keep the woman from rushing to him, Remus said, “Let Sirius and Lucius help him to the table before you do anything.” Quietly, he added, “Clear off the end of the bench so he can take a seat there. It'll be easier for him that way.”Pleased with what he was seeing, smiling, Arthur said, “When you lot said you had a surprise for us, you weren't joking! This is a wonderful one.”Grinning at Arthur as he helped Harry sit down then slid on the bench by him, Sirius said, “We thought you might like it.”Watching Molly hug the young man, then Harry grin sheepishly and hug her back, Albus said, eyes twinkling, “This is good! He's awake. That's a major step in the right direction.”“It is,” Sirius said, sipping at the beer an elf brought him while keeping an eye on those coming over to his godson. Waiting until everyone took a seat, he then said, looking around, “We need some help, on several things.”“Whatever is needed,” Albus told him firmly, nodding, reaching out to pat Harry's trembling hand.“First and foremost, we need Poppy to look at him,” Severus told him gruffly. “She's not busy right now, what with the term just starting, so I thought tomorrow in the afternoon to have her come over. The trembling is a big concern. Black also gave him some of the standardized tests. They show some issues. I'll deliver those to her tonight.” Quietly, he added, “Narcissa helped him compose letters to his friends and Draco, I'll deliver those as well.”“I'll get her over here,” Albus told him. “She's been annoying me to check on him anyway. This will make her happy.”“I'm working on finding the spell Bella used,” Lucius interjected, folding his hands on the table. “Harry described the effects to me, so I've narrowed it down slightly. I'll pass on what I've got so far to those that think they can help before the meeting adjourns. Hopefully, between all of us, we can pinpoint it, then reverse most of what it did.”“Get it my direction and I'll work with it,” Moody said after taking a sip from his flask.Looking at Fred and George, who were grinning at Harry, Sirius said, “We're taking him to get a new wand tomorrow. Ollivander is custom making him one. Can we Floo into your shop and go from there?”“Of course,” Fred nodded.“Give us the time and we'll make sure no one is around,” George added.Nodding to them, Sirius looked over at Bill then to Moody, “Can you two come with us? Just to make sure? Remus and I are taking him, but we'd prefer to have some more bodies with us just in case. He's having problems anyway, so we need help.”“We'll be there,” Moody said with a firm nod when he glanced at Bill, who nodded as well.“Tonks and I will try to be in the Alley at that time to help keep an eye on things,” Kingsley said with a grin.“Good,” Remus said. “We're going to have problems anyway. He's doing very well when it comes to walking, but he still needs some help. Lucius found him a cane and we're working with that.” Shaking his head, he then added, softly, “His wand is almost done for. It's got big cracks in it from the power he's putting through it. We haven't worked much with him either.”“Which means, we have to get the basics back down before we can even attempt to press on to anything new,” Sirius said, grinning as Harry munched on an extra large chunk of fudge that Molly had given him.“We'll manage to work with him, what with all of us here,” Narcissa said with a firm nod.Quickly, Sirius ran down what they had done in the last day. “We've got as much in place as we can get. He's doing really well walking and that, just unsteady though. Cissy owl ordered several things to help, like silverware and quills. Remus went out today and picked up some Muggle clothes that will make it easier for him to get dressed by himself. The rest—we'll take it as it comes.”Nodding at that, Arthur asked the young man, smiling, “How are you doing, Harry?”“Alright,” Harry told him, leaning against Sirius as he sipped his milk. “Frustrated mostly. That and tired most of the time.”Patting Harry's back as he slipped an arm around the young man, Sirius said, gently, “It'll work itself out. It's just going to take time to get used to it is all.”“When he gets his wand, I'm going to find a cane for him that can be fitted with the wand, like mine. So, if he needs it, he won't have to fumble,” Lucius said, looking around. “As we don't know how long it's going to take to get him back to where he doesn't need to use one to walk with, we thought this might be for the best.”“Good idea, Lucius,” Moody nodded. “I'll have Ollivander give us the specs for it so you know what to look for.”“We picked his books up for him for the term, so you should be good there,” Molly said, smiling at the young man. “We'll try to come over and help when we can as well.”“That's fine,” Sirius nodded. Quietly, he added, feeling Harry lean against him, “Just be prepared for us not to even get to that part for a while. We have other issues that need worked with first before we can press onto anything new.”“The medical leave papers have shown up, so we aren't concerned about that,” Severus added, more to drive that point home to Albus than anything else. “Lupin picked up the forms to remove the Trace so Mr. Potter can work with what he needs. Lucius has them filled out, so they can be filed tomorrow.”“That won't be a problem and will be granted because of his condition. We have all the documentation we need for that,” Lucius explained with a dismissive wave. “It'll be one less thing to worry about on this front.”Albus nodded, “This is now one less concern to fret over.”“We're going to try to keep it a secret as long as we can that he's awake to hold off problems,” Remus said quietly, looking around. “We'll put a glamour on him tomorrow as we're not willing to chance Polyjuice to get him there. Even Severus said he's not sure if Polyjuice might counteract what he's taking that is needed. We hope that will be enough. Ollivander, of course, will know who he's dealing with, we just don't want anyone else knowing. We would Apparate him there, but we're worried about that with the seizures and it triggering one. Until we're sure the potions have them under control, we're not willing to chance that. I've set up the time early enough that the Alley won't be busy and minimal people will be around. I'm just not sure how long it's going to take for the wand is all.”“You lot can come sit in the shop until then,” George offered.“The back room is comfortable and we won't let anyone in,” Fred added with a firm nod.Grinning, George added, “Besides, you can see the shop that way.”“It's only right that you do since you gave us so much help,” Fred chuckled, grinning himself then winking.Seeing Harry grin and hearing him snicker, Sirius leaned over and whispered, grinning himself, “I know you gave them the start up money, Harry. Good job there.”Nodding, Harry said nothing, still grinning.Taking some papers out of his robes, Severus handed them over to Lucius. Shaking his head, he said, “Those are to withdraw Draco. You need to sign them. He's going to be fine tonight, but we need him out, now. I've been hearing things I don't like. As bad as this is, I don't want to chance him staying. He can come tomorrow with Poppy. I'll make sure he has everything packed and send it with an elf.”Sighing, Lucius took them then signed quickly, shaking his head. Passing them back, he imparted, “We'll be ready for him. The elves have a basic Potions lab set up in the basement. We can work from there with it. That'll be put on hold until it's finished. The rest of us can work with him on the other subjects.”Taking the papers, Albus signed in a flourish. “Severus can have Minerva sign them when he goes back, as that'll be before I do. It'll then be official. We'll make sure he doesn't go to class and can stay in his rooms until it's time to leave tomorrow so he doesn't have more problems.”Taking the papers and tucking them back into his robes, Severus nodded, “I'll ensure she does and will have an elf keep an eye on him for problems. Right now, he's in Minerva's office, studying. That staves off trouble and people thinking they can try anything with him.”Looking at Harry, who appeared to be sliding into a doze, Albus asked, gently, “You're not going to have a problem with Draco being around, are you?”“I'm good there, no problem,” Harry said, reaching up to rub his shut eyes, sighing softly.
“We've filled him in on what's going on, so there won't be a problem,” Sirius told Albus, feeling Harry lean more heavily against him. Quietly, he said, “He's probably going to doze through most of this. It's taking a great deal of energy to do what he has and is wearing him out.”“Once he gets his new wand, that should help,” Moody told him firmly. “That will let him channel his magic right once more. It won't with the physical part, but it won't be such a drain.”“Poppy should be able to give him something to help slightly,” Severus said with a firm nod. “He won't be back to normal, of course, but it should help.”“We'll see what she says tomorrow and go from there,” Albus told everyone then pressed on to other business they had, keeping his voice down so that they didn't disturb Harry.
Stepping into Minerva's office after sending a message as to who to have there when he returned, Severus smirked at the worried looks. Shutting the door behind him, he waited for the privacy ward to activate then looked around.
“Has something happened to Harry?” Minerva asked, a concerned look on her face, voice tight.“Yes,” Severus said with a nod then pulled out the letters and passed them around. Smirking bigger, he said, “He's awake.”“Oh, thank Merlin,” Minerva said with a relived sigh and a tiny smile.“Those were written by Narcissa as the trembling hasn't improved enough for Mr. Potter to do it himself. He just wanted everyone to know he's as well as can be expected,” Severus explained, looking around. Miss Granger and the youngest Weasley appeared to have tears in their eyes, but were grinning like the rest were. Quietly, he added, “Say nothing to anyone. Mr. Potter is in no shape to defend himself, so we don't want the word out yet.”“How is he, Professor?” Hermione asked, voice somewhat watery as she clutched the letter she just read tightly in a slightly shaking hand.“He has issues, big ones, but his faculties are intact. Beyond that, we're going to get Poppy to look at him tomorrow to see what she can do to help. He also remembers the effects of the spell, so we're able to try to track that down. A couple of people are working on that as we speak. You may write him, of course, like you have been. He's going to reply. For now, Narcissa is going to pen the responses until he gets used to the dict-o-quill. Just expect some frustration as he's going to have to relearn plenty of what he already knows.”“Thank you, Professor,” Ginny said softly. “This is wonderful!”Smirking and nodding, Severus put a hand on Draco's shoulder, looking down at the young man that was grinning a little as he read the letter. Softly, he said, “I have the papers to withdraw Mr. Malfoy. Albus is going to send him to Grimmauld Place with Poppy tomorrow.” Pulling those out, he handed them over to Minerva. “They still need your signature, but everything else is in place.” Looking down at Draco, who appeared crestfallen, he said, shaking his head, “We think this is for the best. The situation isn't improving and will probably worsen. This is better for you.”Though he didn't like it, Draco understood and sighed. “You're right, Professor. Does Potter know?”“He does,” Severus confirmed. “He's been filled in on what's going on as well, so there shouldn't be problems. You'll stay in your rooms until it's time to leave. If I'm not around, one of the elves will stay with you. I don't anticipate a problem until then.”“Is there any chance of Harry coming back to school this year,” Hermione asked quietly.“No,” Severus told her with a firm shake of his head. “Right now, we don't know what effects he's showing are permanent and what can be improved. There are other issues that are showing with tests that were run. Those need addressed as well. It's going to take a great deal of time for him to relearn some very basic precepts before he can move on to where he should be. There are also real concerns about the seizures and if we have them under control. They may shoot for him trying to return next year, but I'm not even certain about that. For the foreseeable future, he needs to be schooled at home.” Seeing her nod, he said, “That's all I wanted to say and deliver. I have papers to take to Poppy so she can prepare herself. If anything else happens, I’ll let everyone know. Just keep this to yourselves for now.” Seeing them nod, he added, “Minerva can walk you down to your chambers when you finish, Mr. Malfoy. I should be in my office before long.” With that, he swept out, headed towards the infirmary.
Sitting in a squishy chair in the room he now shared with Sirius, Harry rubbed his eyes in a tired way and blinked. This was really weird. Sirius said someone was coming over to talk to them, but it was about midnight. Shaking his head, he asked, “Who is this anyway? And why so late?”
“It's one of those things you're going to have to keep to yourself, Harry. We can't chance him being seen over here,” Sirius told him. “It's not someone you know, so we'll introduce him when he gets here. We know it's late, but with all the people in and out of the house during the day, it's too risky for him to come over then.”“You'll like him, I promise,” Narcissa told him, reaching over to pat the young man's leg.Hearing Lucius and Moody talking with the person as they came towards the door, Sirius got up then opened it, ushering them inside. Grinning at his godson, who was looking at the extra person warily, he said, “Harry, meet Rufus Scrimgeour. He's not only my old boss, but he's now the Minster of Magic.”Walking over to the young man, Rufus shook his hand and nodded, “Moody told me you were awake so I had to come meet you. It's a pleasure, Mr. Potter.”“Thank you, sir,” Harry said respectfully, though he was confused by this.Conjuring a chair and taking a seat, waiting for everyone else to get settled in, Rufus looked around, clasping his hands in front of him, elbows resting on his knees, “Moody filled me in on the effects of the spell. I'll have a couple of people start looking into it tomorrow to see what we can do to help. I'm also going to assign some extra Aurors to be in the Alley tomorrow for your trip. I'll come across with something about a tip of some kind. Tonks and Kingsley will be ones I'll make sure are there. We'll keep an eye out, don't worry.”“Good,” Remus said, settling back.“He's going to make sure I know who to look for as they'll be in civilian clothes,” Moody said, sipping from his flask and shifting in his chair.“Moody filled me in on everything from the meeting. If something's needed, get in contact with him and he'll get to me. Even if it's something as benign as potions needed from St. Mungos. I'll make sure you get it so you don't have to risk going out. I also signed the form for the breaking of the Trace. Moody has it, so Ollivander won't put one on the wand. It's filed with all other things to do with minors, so it won't get out. I'm with all of you in that this needs to stay quiet for now.” Rufus explained, looking around. “Anything we need to look out for on my end that you know of?”“We're just worried what Albus might pull to get Harry back is all,” Sirius told him, taking a seat by Harry on the arm of the young man's chair.“Keep on your toes there,” Rufus nodded. “Let me know if he tries. If he even attempts it, get Moody to contact me and I'll do what I can. I have a form ready for the Board of Governors to ensure he can't be brought back in the school because of medical problems. That will stop that nonsense in its tracks if he tries. It's one to block Dumbledore from trying, not to prevent Harry from returning, just to be clear there. I don't want to pull that out if I don't have to as it's going to tip your hand that I know something. We don't want that yet.” Looking at the young man, Rufus told him, “Just keep on your toes, Mr. Potter. Let all these people know if he tries something. They'll block it the best they can and call me if they can't. You just worry about getting yourself better. The rest of us will worry about the other chunks of this mess.” Seeing the young man nod, though look confused, he gave a snort that sounded very much like a chuckle, “I think you need to fill him in on what's going on. Don't worry, I'm just watching out for you.” Looking around, he asked, “Anything else? Moody has me as up to date as he can keep me. Sometimes you lot just hear other things is all.”“I think that's all,” Lucius said, leaning back in his chair. “Severus hasn't come up with anything beyond what we know right now. When we hear, we'll pass it along.”
“Make sure you do,” Rufus told him with a firm nod. “The more information I can get, the better I can work with this. I know Albus thinks he has something cooked up here that will work, but I have plenty more bodies to work with and can get it done easier. I can’t do that if I don't know what it is. And anything you hear about anyone I need to keep an eye on, let me know. Thickness is already out. We've got him stashed to where he can't cause problems until we can figure out what's wrong there.”“It's not the Imperius?” Lucius inquired, leaning forward, interested in that.
“No,” Rufus told him with a shake of his head. “Not that we can detect. Something's wrong there though. Give us time, we'll figure it out. Just let us know if there are anymore that we need to look out for. I'll do what I can.” Looking around, not seeing any sign that anyone had anything else, he said, “I'll get out of here then. I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I have your backs, as I promised. Any problems, get in touch.” Standing, he nodded to everyone then said to Harry, “It was a pleasure to meet you.” With that, he followed Moody out, talking quietly as they went.Watching the man go, eyes wide, Harry looked at the grinning Sirius and asked, “What was that about?”Grinning, Sirius ruffled his hair then explained, “When this whole bit began to piece together with Albus, Moody and I went to Rufus. We filled him in on everything we have. He's one that will do what's needed in this mess and put a stop to it. No one, anywhere, can get him to change sides in it. He wants this stopped as much as we do. To do that, he needs information. We're more than willing to give it to him. In return, he makes damned sure we're protected. It's win/win for all of us. Moody can get information to Albus the old man thinks he can use and we all know just what's going on. Take my word for it, Rufus is no-nonsense about this and will make damned sure what we give him gets put to good use. He's already got his hands on a couple big named Death Eaters. Lucius gave him everything he had, so there are plenty more in his sights when they poke their heads up. Hell, from what we understand from Snape, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has already had to shift his base of operations a couple of times because Rufus was breathing down his neck. Snape is as protected as Rufus can get him with all of it and won't have to worry about people screaming for his head when it's all over. He's going to also look out for you and protect you the best he can. We made damned sure of that.”“He should have been the one to get some of this information in the first place,” Remus told Harry. “He was head of the Aurors and could have done something to stop a lot of it before it even began. Albus never went to him. Now, as Minister, he has bigger wands to wield. That we need and know it. Albus wouldn't like it, we know that, but it'll help. The Order is good, but Rufus has the entire Ministry at his fingertips to do something. That can only help, the reason we all went this direction.”Understanding, Harry nodded, “Gotcha. One of the good guys then.”“He is,” Narcissa assured him. “He's a bit gruff and no-nonsense, but he can be trusted. Don't worry about it, Harry, he is truly only interested in winning this fight and not at all costs.”“She's right,” Sirius confirmed. “Alright, since we have tons to do tomorrow, we need sleep. Besides, Harry gets his own bed for a change. He is going to love that. So, we need to get to bed.” Seeing everyone stand and say goodnight then head to the door, Sirius said, “Let's get you changed then you can get some rest. Don't worry about it. He just wanted to meet you so you know he's one to trust if you need help.”Standing, grabbing his cane, Harry said, “Works for me. Let's do the loo thing then find the pajamas. I'm about to drop here.”“Works for me,” Sirius said, standing and moving to the right side of his godson so Harry could lean on him a little. Making conversation as they moved towards the loo, he said, “You're going to love Fred and George's shop. So many fun toys!”Snickering as he made his way slowly towards the bathroom, Harry said, “I can only imagine!”“Yeah, they've been waiting for you to wake up to give you all kinds of products. I can't wait to try some of these out!” Sirius laughed, guiding Harry along.“Oh, I can just see it,” Harry snickered, shaking his head.
