Chapter 4 – Unexpected Company
He pushed open the door, and most of the things inside the room were the same, there seemed some dark items that remained burned, but normal things like books, shoes, quills and statues, all seemed the same. How to find the diary... Where would Snape put it when he wanted to hide something? No obvious place... no, but a hidden place. He wandered down a few twists and turns, looking, peeking and peering. An object caught his eye, it was the half-blood prince's potions book that Ginny had hidden away.. not a very good hiding place either, just tossed on top of a stack of books really.
Turning to go back the way he came and look again, his eyes fell on to what looked like the bust of a man in love with a snake, it was the head position really. The snake was carved around the neck of the bust with the man's head turning as if to talk to it... This was Salazar Slytherin's bust... Harry looked at the nameplate and sure enough he was right. But something was a bit off... There was a small crest near the neckline that showed a lion... Harry picked up the bust gently and started to look it over. It was Slytherin alright, but that Gryffindor lion was a new addition to the bust. Harry ran his fingers over it to see if it would come off, but it didn't. What did happen was the bust split from the corners of the mouth all the way back, only to have the head fall backwards on the activated switch. As the head fell back the book inside was revealed... it was tiny though... Shrinking charm probably. Harry picked it up and put the bust back in its place. He walked to the back of the room, a blank wall.
"Can you add a door to the cottage?" Harry asked tentatively.
A door appeared and he opened it. First, there were only dirt walls, like a tunnel. Then as he got through further, he saw another door just at the end. Opening it, he fell onto his parlor floor from the painting above the mantel. "Stairs would have been nice...,” he thought as he got up from his face plant onto the parlor carpet. He moved over towards one of the chairs and seated himself. He pulled out the small book and just stared at it.
Why did his mother want him to learn about Snape? The man who had sacrificed so much for her to watch over Harry was dead because of him. Harry's heart clenched. Just like so many others in his life, they loved his mother or his father and died for him. Did any of them see him, know him, or was he just the son of James and Lilly Potter? He was nothing compared to his parents, they were the true heroes, and yet still because of him his parent's friends died. Harry was quickly falling again into that dark pit of his mind where nightmares and guilt dwelled. However, he was quickly jerked out of his melancholy thoughts with a sharp knock on the door to the cottage. Harry froze, unsure what to do. No one knew he was there, nor did he think anyone cared really. The knock came again, but was louder this time.
Harry stood and walked over to the door, drawing his wand and leveled it at the door as he cracked it open. There just outside was a disheveled looking blonde, pointed nose and a grimace on his face.
"Malfoy?" Harry asked in a strangled tone.
"The one and only, Potter." Draco replied with a drawl, but then softened a bit, "Can I come in, Harry?"
Harry was a bit startled at the use of his given name falling of the lips of his school rival.
Harry stepped back and opened the door wider and gestured for Draco to enter, and led him to the parlor seating area.
"Why are you here Malf...Draco?" Harry said, opting to extend the same courtesy, if the other boy was willing to play nice.
"I have been searching for you since you left the castle the other night. I wanted to thank you..." Draco started, but Harry cut him off.
"There is no need for that…" Harry stated.
"You saved my life. I was your enemy, Harry. I think that needs a thank you, and if anything, the loss of that evil man is something we will all be grateful for as well. But I am not here over him, just me. I don't know why you saved me, but I want to thank you." Draco stated.
"How did you find me?" Harry asked a little impatiently.
"Hmm... strange new tower cottage by the lake... you are gone... I derived a conclusion and thought I would just find out by knocking. How did you do it anyway... it's an interesting place." Draco commented.
"I didn't. I woke up to find myself here, and well, that is it really. The castle did it I think, it chose me as it's protector as well, whatever that means." Harry grumped.
Draco just stared at him. "Is there anything you can't do?" He drawled with a bit of sarcasm.
"Keep people I love alive..." Harry whispered as he stared at the floor.
Draco grimaced, knowing that this was not a subject he should be addressing. He reached over and laid a hand on Harry's shoulder patting it a bit awkwardly; he wasn't much for comforting people.
"It’s not your fault, Harry." Draco tried simple logic, "The man was evil."
Harry just looked at Draco with almost soulless eyes,” They all died protecting me, not because they knew me or love me, but because my parents were loved by them and they felt bound by duty. If I had died with my parents that night, so many others would still be alive because I wouldn't have been a burden to them. Snape would be alive, Remus and Tonks, George, and so many others..."
"Harry, they died because they fought against an evil man. They died because you were the only one able to defeat him, and they gave you that chance. I see all of it now, now that I don't have my family in danger any more, and now that I can finally think for myself." Draco offered.
"I should have died..."Harry, whispered, “I didn't plan on living, there is nothing left for me now, just this thing about my mother."
Draco's eyebrow went up. "What thing about your mother?"
Not really knowing why, Harry told Draco about the parchments that were left by his mother. Draco was amazed that Lilly and Severus had been friends. He was also surprised that no one really knew the history of the merpeople of the lake; Severus should have gotten credit for that.
"I know we are not friends, Harry. But I would like to be, if you let me." Draco said, knowing that at least he could do that in thanks for all Harry had done for him.
Harry shrugged, "It's not like the house is crawling with guests, Mal..Draco, feel free. However, since Snape was your God Father, you may want to read the diary when I am done. Evidently there is something here she wants me to see, I am not sure what that is yet, but well... at least it's something to do."
Draco nodded. "I have to go now, my parents will be wondering where I am soon enough, I won't say anything about where you are, if you don't want."
Harry smiled a little, "Thanks; I'm not ready for a rush of people. I probably need to charm the cottage against unwanted visitors."
Draco chuckled, "Probably, though not a lot of people are as smart as me. Granger probably, but right now she is trying to get her parents back in their right minds at St. Mungo's." He got up and moved to the door. Then he turned to face Harry. "Thank you, Friend" Draco said as he held out his hand.
Harry smiled at the gesture and the memory, took the offered hand and shook it. "Later, Draco".
Since Draco left, Harry was left alone again to ponder.
