When Severus woke, his head felt like it was being pounded with a mallet. In fact, every inch of him hurt. He kept his eyes shut and reached out to the other side of the bed, which he found to be empty. There was a moment of panic as the thought of it all being a dream entered his head. But his hangover was real enough, so the rest of it had to be, too.
He opened one eye and found James seated on the edge of the bed with a glass of what looked like green sludge in his hand. "Morning," James greeted with one of his classic warm smiles. "After I saw the empty bottle I took the liberty." Severus felt a rush of relief that James was there, but a deep sadness that the rest of it had happened as well.
He reached out to grab the hangover remedy, gulping the awful concoction down. It tasted like vomit mixed with mud, but it would make him feel better. "Thanks," he mumbled, setting the glass by the empty bottle.
"Why don't you go take a bath while you wait for that to kick in?" James suggested. "I've already had mine. The heat might help."
Severus crawled out of the bed, willing his legs to carry him to the bathroom. He started to unbutton his robes, still in his clothes from the night before, and he tossed them to the floor. The room was slightly chilled so he shivered as he leaned over the bathtub to fill it.
He climbed in, letting out a deep, contented sigh as he lowered himself into the steaming water and the warmth spread through him, easing the aches and his upset stomach. Already feeling a little better, he reached for the shampoo to wash his hair. Now that Dumbledore was gone and there was no class to teach, he finally had that luxury.
He washed himself from head to toe, and the water was beginning to get cold when the bathroom door opened and James poked his head in. "Feeling better?"
"Much," Severus answered, reaching to pull the plug.
"Then I'll join you," James said with a gleam in his eye, and rushed over to stop him. "Why don't we just warm this up?" He stuck his hand in the water and swished it back and forth until the water was steaming again. "Have I told you just how much I've missed you?" he said as he tore his robes off and climbed into the tub.
"Only several times since last night." Severus rearranged himself to let James settle on his lap. "But I could stand to hear it a few more times." When James was settled Severus reached to lovingly brush James' hair out of his face. "I missed you, too—you have no idea how much."
James turned and ran his tongue up the side of Severus' neck before pinching a bit of pale flesh between his teeth, causing Severus to shiver under him. "It isn't hard to tell what you want," Severus said, sliding his wet hand down James' bare chest.
"We haven't made up for lost time yet," James said with an impish grin, and he shifted his weight to the side, silently telling Severus what he had in mind.
Severus shook his head with a small smile. He slid out from under James and got to his knees in the water, with his chest pressed up against the rim of the tub and his ass pushed slightly outward. James moved in behind him, reaching out with one hand to summon a bottle of oil. The bottle appeared in his hand and he poured a little out, slipping a slick finger inside the other wizard.
Severus moaned and pushed back into the finger while holding onto the edge of the tub. James sent the bottle of oil back to where it came from and pressed himself up against Severus' back. He slid his hard cock inside the other wizard and smiled when he heard a soft whimper. He knelt motionless so he could enjoy the closeness before rocking his hips and wrapping an arm around Severus' waist to pull him in closer. He leaned in and sank his teeth into Severus' shoulder.

Severus cried out as he came and his muscles clamped down on James' cock, pulling the other wizard over the edge with him. The small room was filled with the sound of heavy breathing. Severus' heart pounded in his chest while the rest of him was filled with relaxing contentment. He liked that James didn't move for several minutes. Part of him was still afraid James would disappear on him.
James pulled back with a soft sigh and slowly got to his feet, reaching for a towel. "Now that's a good way to start a morning."
Severus' legs were too shaky to move just yet. "I won't argue that. I wouldn't mind starting every morning like that."
James chuckled softly and reached for his robes on the floor. "You and I think so much alike. That's why we make such a good couple. Actually, that is something we need to talk about."
Severus' stomach suddenly lurched, vaguely fearful of what James might be about to tell him. "Oh?" was all he said, barely able to keep his voice from cracking. He rose to his feet, grabbed the damp towel James had discarded, and began to dry himself with it.
"Yes, we're in a different situation than we were before," James said as he buttoned up his robes. "I'm not married anymore. I haven't been for fifteen years."
"And I doubt you were celibate." Severus voiced his concern.
"No," James confirmed. "You know me all too well. But that's in the past, while I was being kept away from you. What we need to discuss is whether we're going to keep our arrangement the same or become exclusive."
Severus took a deep breath as a huge weight was lifted off him. He'd wanted James to himself all along, and only shared him because he had to. He grabbed his robes off the chair they were hanging on and also got dressed. "I want to say we should be exclusive, but what about Harry? I told you about our past. I wouldn't want to come between the two of you."
James looked away and stared out the window. "Harry is a complication. I don't know what he wants, and I'm not going to push him. But I think I want the two of you to at least learn to be civil, in private anyway."
Severus nodded in understanding. "I think I can do that. I just hope Harry can. I don't want the same situation we had with Black."
"Neither do I," James said as he left the bathroom. "That was very trying."
There was a knock at the door and James went to answer it. He found Harry standing there, wearing the same clothes he'd had on the night before. Dark circles were under the boy's eyes, like he hadn't slept. He just stared at his father for a moment, his expression unreadable. "I've decided I'm going to keep your secret."
"I'm glad," James replied, awkwardly playing with his hands. "Come in and stay for a bit."
Harry hesitated a moment but finally stepped inside the room, closing the door behind him. "Do you remember any of our conversation last night?" he asked Severus.
"A few vague bits and pieces," Severus answered.
"He was here last night?" James looked a little surprised. "Why didn't you wake me?"
"I thought you needed the rest," Severus answered. "Anyway, I remember saying a few things I thought needed to be said."
"Yeah," Harry nodded. "You said a lot. Well, I looked at those memories of yours, and you were telling the truth. It's difficult for me to believe, but I think you were too drunk last night to fabricate a memory. Dumbledore wanted you to kill him, and that's the only reason I'm keeping your secret. Even after everything you did, I don't think it would be fair for you to be labeled a criminal for doing what was asked of you."
"That's very decent of you," Severus said. "I hope this means we can put everything behind us. We can't be friendly in public, of course, but in private...."
"I don't know." Harry swallowed hard. The tension in the room was thick. "I don't think I can just forgive and forget all the torment you put me through, even if I do know the reason now. I was just a child. You were the adult, but you didn't act like it."
"No, I didn't," Severus agreed. "And I still regret it."
"Only because my dad is back," Harry shot back. "If he wasn't, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. I would be telling everyone you killed Dumbledore."
"But I am here," James interrupted the conversation. "Severus and I were just talking. We want to get back together as a couple. Now, I want you in my family as well, and I know it's going to take time for you to sort things out. What I do ask is that both of you remain civil and don't try to make me choose sides."
Harry looked back and forth between the two, his jaw clenched. "I guess this is just another thing I have to deal with, then."
James frowned and reached for Severus' hand. "I wish you would look at this in a more positive light, Harry. You're welcome to join us for breakfast. Then you can meet Dumbledore's son Azrael. He's coming with his father."
"Wait—Dumbledore was pregnant and he hid it?" Severus asked, looking rather surprised. "How did he manage that?"
"Pregnant?" Harry repeated the word and swallowed hard. "That's even possible?"
"It is," James answered, "but it's not common. It happens sometimes to wizards, and no one is really sure how or why. It usually happens to wizards who are bonded to each other, but Azrael was a little different."
Harry looked like he was about to faint. "How did I not know any of this?"
"Dumbledore was a very private person," Severus said. "I didn't know he had a son until your dad told me. I don't think anyone in this castle knows much about him."
"I...I think I'm just going to go find my friends. I just wanted to let you know what I decided." Harry turned and left quickly, leaving James and Severus alone again.
"At least the lines of communication are open," James sighed. "You know, I really hate Dumbledore for this."
Severus put his hand on James' shoulder to try and reassure him. "I'm sure Harry loves you as much as you love him. I'm the complication."
"No, you just made a very big mistake. Hopefully he'll come to see what I see. I'm going to keep hoping we can be a family."
"For now, let's go to the Great Hall for breakfast. I don't know about you, but now that I feel better I'm starving."
"Yeah, right behind you." James followed Severus out the door.
