Blind faith chapter 4
Authors note:
I’m alive!
I can promise you that stories will not be abandoned but they will be delayed… Planning, timing and typing are not my strongest characteristics… I have a lot of this story already written out but I am one of those old-fashioned writers who first writes with pen and paper before typing the story and editing the first time. So bear with me and let me know what you feel and like when reading this story and what you don’t…
On to the story!
When Severus released Harry from the one sided talk that clearly made the boy uncomfortable Harry fled the couch. As the adults discussed some more mundane things the boy wandered around the room aimlessly and eerily silent. Finally he found a spot of sunlight and stood still in it, not moving at all but just basking in the sun.
Severus watched his newly acquired son, observing his behaviors.
“Perhaps the solarium could become his place. It would be a quiet place for his studies and I think he will like the open space.” The potions master suggested.
“Those monsters kept him locked up in a cupboard.” Lucius muttered, still shuddering from the circumstances he had witnessed. The others looked at him shocked.
“I went to talk with his aunt after I went to the ministry.” He explained.
Narcissa nodded quietly, observing the small boy. The solarium was a place with plenty of sunlight and many tropical plants flourishing. The warm temperature and relaxing atmosphere hopefully would help the boy.
Unlike most children, Harry seemed content to stand quietly in the sun, not seeking attention or needing entertainment. Severus could not help to sadly compare Harry to Draco, though the was not always a fan of the blond boy that in his opinion was spoiled almost to ruin, but seeing Harry made him hope he would learn to be a child again.
When they were all caught up they led the boy out, taking tea in the solarium to see how Harry responded. Again the boy did not sit down but wandered around the room, exploring and searching. Carefully touching the plants and trailing his fingers over the leaves. Narcissa cast a subtle charm around them that would allow Harry to hear them talk but not understand what they were saying.
"We need to make plans for him. Decide how to help him and what our next steps should be." Narcissa said, watching the boy navigate around them.
"I liked the idea of getting him a guide animal. Not everything in the wizarding world is safe and can be found with just a cane to guide him, a magical guide animal can protect him from these thing. The quicker he gets used to it the safer." Lucius said, aware of the risks some artifacts could pose to the boy.
"I agree." Narcissa said, "we could take him tomorrow to see Marcus, I am sure he could find Harry a guide animal."
"I will check him again to see how he is doing but if he is strong enough I don't think that should be a problem. Perhaps also doing his shopping on the same go." Severus suggested. Wanting to get it all out of the way as well.
"I was thinking about visiting one of the muggle shops that offer aids for people with disabilities to see what tools and aids they can inspire us to use." Narcissa said.
"If you do you should also pick up some books on reading Braille. Since it might be more convenient for him to learn so he does not always need listening books. If I can figure it out I might be able to find or craft a spell for him to change his books to Braille as well.” Severus mused, considering what spells he needed to craft to help Harry attain normal schooling.
The next morning when Severus found Harries bed empty he first made his way to the kitchen. There he found the small boy sipping at a large mug of what Severus suspected to be hot chocolate.Apparently they would be the only morning risers in this household. Severus had left Lucius asleep and Narcissa was a notoriously late sleeper.
“Good morning Harry,” he said brightly, asking for a coffee and pulling out a stool to sit beside the boy. Considering the response he had gotten last morning it was encouraging that though Harry had frozen and shifted a little he remained seated and after Severus took a few sips of his coffee even started drinking his hot chocolate. The two sat in silence, being surrounded by elves preparing breakfast.
“Sirs, master and mistress in breakfast room.” An elf squeaked besides them that Severus suspected to be Milly.
“Thank you, we will go there.” He told her, checking to see if Harry had finished his drink before leading the boy out.
Healer Dumee was waiting in the dining room for them with Lucius and Narcissa, smiling when the unlikely pair entered.
“Well, you look a lot better than last time I saw you.” The doctor remarked, looking Harry over. The boy seemed oblivious to the attention and made his way over to the same place he had used yesterday. Narcissa had already warned the doctor about the boy’s eating habits so he was not surprised. He agreed with Severus though that for now it was more important that harry ate and felt comfortable doing so than that he ate with cutlery.
After breakfast the healer checked harry over and agreed to a trip to the animal trainer and diagon ally. Except for his past injuries harry seemed to be doing well and was even slowly improving already.
Harry calmly obeyed all orders given to him as long as they were concise and understandable. Severus knew that it was not a sign of trust but rather the opposite. Harry hoped that by blindly obeying them he would not be hurt or punished.
“Do you like dogs harry?” Dumee asked casually, frowning a little when harry immediately and vehemently shook his head. Clearly remembering something in the past that made the small boy shudder.
“Well,” the healer muttered, “perhaps you can find some other animal you will like.” The man tried to sound cheerfully but he shared a meaningful look with the Malfoy’s. There was still a lot they did not know about the small boy with them and they would have to watch him closely if they took him out.
“Good luck today, I will see Harry again in four days.” He told them before flooing out ahead of them. Harry startled a little at the strange woosh sound near him but held his ground.
Narcissa made sure that Harry was wrapped up in one of Draco’s old cloaks and that he had his cane folded and put away safely before she took some floo power from the ornate box on the mantle and threw it in.
“Marco’s Menagerie,” she stated and keeping a firm arm around Harry’s shoulder and stepped into the roaring fire place despite Harry’s sudden struggles.
Harry swayed unsteadily when they stepped out and tensed disoriented. Narcissa firmly led him way from the fireplace so they would not impede anyone from coming through but after that she let him familiarize himself with the new place. But harry just stood frozen, shivering and hunched over. Narcissa felt a little lost how to deal with the boy like this. Draco would be getting into everything. She nodded at Marco when he entered the room, watching the small boy for a moment before stepping up to him.
Lucius flooed in behind them making harry flinch and retreat a little. The Malfoy’s shared a worried look, frightened they pushed the young traumatized boy too far. Marco watched their interactions from the doorway.
“Hello, Harry. Why don’t you come into the living? You can have some chocolate and pet some of my bunnies.” He told the boy in his Scottish burr, Marco waited for the boy to unfold his cane and trusted his obedience to follow him though. Bowed head and hunched over he did what was asked of him.
Marco directed Harry to a low stool, he made sure the hot chocolate and cookies were near and retreated to the hallway to talk to the Malfoy’s.
“You need to prepare him better,” Marco growled at Narissa, for all the patience he had for abused animals and children he disliked caretakers that did not live up to his expectations. “He does not know our world and has never trusted an adult before. If you do not warn him he will not learn to trust you.”
Marco glanced at the room to see how Harry was progressing. Several animals had approached the boy but Harry just sat frozen. Several bunnies, smaller dogs and a few cats wandered the room approaching the child to smell, nudge or taste him. Seeing how Harry jerked away from the small dogs more than for the other animals though he seemed uncomfortable with all animals near him. Marco entered the room with a sigh, waving Narcissa and Lucius to sit on the couch.
“Do you like animals, Harry?” the animal trainer asked, studying the child. Harry shrugged a little but at the same time shaking his head just a little bit. Marco smiled at the ambiguous answer. Clearly Harry sensed his guardians wanted him to have an animal but he did not agree with it.
“Were you bitten by a dog?” Marco asked next watching Harry touch the inside of his left arm protectively. “Did you ever have any pets before?” Marco continued, watching Harry again shake his head and slowly forming a plan that could just work.
“There is one dog I would like you to meet. He was hurt when he was just a pup so he has had a hard time to find a home but if you two get along maybe you can help each other. Do you want to meet him?” Marco watched Harry closely, the boy just hung his head, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Nodding little Marco left to retrieve the hound he had spoken off. A magical blue great Dane. When the animal had started to display his magical traits his muggle owners had beaten the pup and even poured scalding water over him before Marco had heard about him and rescued him.
Narcissa grasped a little seeing the large scarred animal that Marco brought in. not understanding how this could help. I Harry feared dogs he should fear this monstrosity even more, but Marco released the dog to wander the room.
“His name is Jacob, he is a little over a year old. He is very smart and will be very protective of his owner. He will not just be a guide animal but also a guardian to harry if he accepts him.” Marco told narcissi and Lucius, covertly watching Jacob who had crouched down and was approaching Harry on his belly. Harry continued to turn his head, trying to figure out where the dog was. Jacob whined softly and nudged Harry’s hand startling the boy who quickly pulled his and away but after a moment he lowered his hand back down. Searching for what was beside him, a little curious what Marco had told him about this dog. Jacob pushed his head up exactly under Harry’s hand. Harry slowly explored the large head, feeling the wide brow and long silky floppy ears. Somehow this large animal seemed so different in the yappy horrible dogs that aunt marge had brought over.
“He already knows how to guide and has shown a lot of intelligence so he can learn new techniques quickly. After having him a few weeks you could come back with him and I can show you how to teach him new commands.” Marco said proudly, watching harry interact with the massive animal beside him.
“Do you think you can become friends Harry?” Marco asked the boy directly. Harry nodded just a little which was a great improvement after his apathy towards animals earlier. “Good!” the trainer exclaimed, approving the match before him happily. “To be able to guide you better he will have to wear a harness and a special jacket that tells people he is a working dog so you will be allowed to take him everywhere and enter places with him dogs are usually not allowed to go.” Marco explained, summoning the gear he would need.
“This is the jacket he will have to wear that goes on first.” Macro passed the bright yellow vest to harry who slowly explored it, poking his arms through the different holes to try and figure it out.
“If you stand up and hold out your hand at your waist he will stand up for you.” Marco said, watching harry follow his directions and slowly getting up, moving his arm out tensely like Marco told him. Jacob easily got to his feet startling harry a little when he realized how big the dog really was, coming up almost to his ribs. Marco chuckled a little.
“You hardly need the gear lad. Perhaps we could look for a simpler harness until you grow a little.” The man said laughing at the size difference.
“Just slide the large hole over his head and pull it down his back.” Marco said, watching the boy follow the instructions. “Now reach under him and fasten the clip.”
“The next harness is more complicated. It is leather with a long bow that you can use to guide you.” Marco said, passing the leather gear to harry who explored it like he had before.
“The widest band has to be on his back, the longer smaller band on his chest and the bow resting on his back. If it is on proper you can fasten the harness beneath his chest like you did with the vest, just make sure the clasps are not over each other or they can hurt him.” Marco told him, watching harry follow the instructions flawlessly.
“Very good Harry, I am proud.” Narcissa said seeing how harry stood up just a little bit straighter besides the large dog.
“Walk around with him a little, explore the room and learn to read his ques.” Marco instructed and watched harry move around.
“Do you want to take him home?” Lucius asked, seeing the boy move around freely. Harry stopped, frozen but after some tense moments finally he nodded slowly.
“Brilliant.” Marco said, happy to have found what he considered a perfect owner for the large dog.
“I will send over his documentation and a week’s food to your home. Harry should carry an id for the dog with their information so he can prove the dog is a licensed service dog. Jacob is used to floo travel and has apperated just make sure you have a good grip on his collar to make sure he does not get lost.” Marco explained to the Malfoy’s.
“Would diagon be too much for them right now?” Narcissa asked, unsure after what happened when they flooed in.
“It will be a test but I am sure he can manage.” Marco said, “Though it might be a good idea for him to go see a mind healer. Just to help him work through what happened to him.” He said watching harry now also petting a large rabbit that had hopped over to him and sought cuddles. Though harry was still uncertain about the animal he was making contact with Jacob guarding his back.
