Chapter 4
Hermione entered a large purple room with tables and chairs scattered around. At the end of the room was what looked to be a self service station and next to it another station which she presumed used to sell hot dinners. It was a typical school cafeteria. She watched Draco sit next to a a girl Hermione had never seen but it looked like Draco knew well. Hermione watched as Draco kissed the girl on the cheek while she pushed her plate of food towards him. The girl was small, with curly black hair and big dark brown eyes and a brown complexion like the Patil twins. She didn’t look much older than 16. Hermione followed Jack and sat opposite the girl who smiled, showing straight rows of white teeth.
“Hi.” She said. Her accent was different to Hermione’s. Hermione thought she was the type of girl who would call burger bread “cobs”.
“Hello.” Hermione returned the girls smile. She nudged Draco slightly.
“Aren’t you going to introduce us, Draco?” Draco looked between Hermione and his friend, before putting down his cutlery.
“Ahem, Hermione, this is Lisha, Lisha this is Hermione.” The introduction was short, and it was apparent that Draco wasn’t going to say anymore.
“Pleased to meet you, Hermione.” She offered her hand to Hermione.
“Likewise.”
“So, how do you know Draco, then?” Lisha queried.
“Oh. We went to school together.”
“So you’re like him? You have magic?”
“Yeah…” Hermione mumbled awkwardly. “How do you know Draco?”
“He was the first person I met when this whole shit started. I was looking at universities here in London when the outbreak became an epidemic. I was hiding in a store, and Draco came running and I saved his life.” She beamed up at Draco.
“University? You’re like 15!” Hermione thought out loud. Lisha pouted, folding her arms.
“I am not 15. I am 18!” Draco chuckled beside her. “Fuck off.” Draco looked offended.
“What did I do?”
“You laughed."
"Is it a crime?"
"When it's coming from you, then yes!"
"There's nothing wrong with being small. It's cute."
"Oh? Cute is it? Do you want to know what's really cute?"
"I'm not so sure anymore."
Lisha lifted her hand, extending her middle finger. "Spin on it." With seeker reflexes he grabbed Lisha's arm, forcing her to fall onto his lap
“Disgusting ain’t it?” Jack nudged Hermione. “Makes me want to gauge my eyes out.”
“I’m just surprised such a small thing can stand up to Malfoy.” Truthfully Hermione thought it was kind of cute. It took an apocalypse to destroy Draco’s prejudice of muggles, since he seemed quite close to this one. It almost looked like they were more than friends. Had Draco Malfoy, pureblood extraordinaire fallen in love with a muggle?! The world truly must have gone to shit for this to happen. Hermione looked around the cafeteria noticing for the first time that there were more people. At the far end was an elderly man and a middle-aged man sat together.
“Father and son” Hermione mused. On the table next to them was what seemed to be, two school children since they were both still in their school uniforms. On the same table were a man and women, slightly older than me huddled together, holding hands. Hermione noticed both of them had rings on their finger. On the table with the most people, was a pregnant women, a man in his mid-40’s who looked like he’d done manual labour all his life, a teenage boy, and another child. Hermione turned back around to see Jack making gag noises at Draco and Lisha, whom had stopped fighting and were now both glaring at Jack. Hermione stood up.
“I’ll be right back.” She went into the direction of the larger table kneeling down to face the pregnant women. “How far gone are you?” She smiled at the women who eyed Hermione with distrust. “Don’t worry, I’m a doctor.”
“Oh!” She exclaimed. “Well I’m around about 20 weeks.”
“Well you’re glowing.” Hermione was in her element. Helping people medically. She had come back to England to be a doctor and she was damn well not going to stop because of zombies. In fact she’d be needed more than ever. “Have there been any problems?”
“Thankfully no. Draco and Jack always make sure I get enough to eat, they even go further than the city, risking their lives so me and baby are healthy.” She cradled her stomach, smiling softly.
“Okay, well if there's anything you need, let me know. That goes for the rest of you.” She walked back to the table and joined Draco, Jack and Lisha who were in a debate.
“Mardy is a word!” Lisha exclaimed.
“No, it’s not. I have never heard that word in my life.”
"Yes it is. It means.. mardy. It's hard to explain." Lisha grumbled.
"Granger help me out here. Is mardy a word?" Hermione blinked.
"Err, it is in the midlands."
"HA!" Draco scowled. "Poor wittle Dracwo doesn't like being wrong, aw." Lisha giggled. Draco folded his arms, grumbling under his breath about women never being right.
Hermione frowned. "How can you be so cheerful at a time like this?"
"My driving instructor told me I was too laid back once."
"Driving- what?" Draco interrupted.
"Shh." Lisha clamped her hand around Draco's mouth.
"Yes, but, at a time like this?"
Lisha sighed, rubbing her eyes, looking for the first time older than her age. "Yes. Sure, I'm scared, Everybody is. But there's no point panicking over it, it's happened. We've got to adapt. I've already accepted that one day I'm going to die, everybody is. I've witnessed death at young age. You get over it."
Draco frowned. "You're not going to die." Lisha smiled softly, cradling his cheek.
"Okay. Besides you have a friend now."
"We're not friends." Draco scoffed.
"He bullied me at school."
"That's not very nice." Lisha commented. Jack laughed.
"Life isn't nice."
"Well, they're going to be friend's now." She looked at Draco and Hermione expectantly.
"Er, sure." Hermione smiled. Lisha turned to Draco.
"I'm not being friends with her." Hermione was wrong; Draco Malfoy would never change.
Lisha sighed. "Draco, I don't think rivalries are ideal in this situation."
"I don't care."
"Do you know what? Fine. Fine. Be stubborn."
Jack nudged Hermione. "Watch this. Fella's whipped."
Draco edged closer to her. "Is somebody a little mardy?"
"Eat shit." Draco sighed.
Jack covered his mouth, trying to quieten down his laughter.
"Okay." He mumbled grudgingly.
"What was that?"
"I said okay. Happy?" Lisha grinned wrapping her arms around Draco's neck.
"Exceedingly."
Hermione yawned. "I'm tired. I'll see you all in the morning."
"See you later Hermione."
"Bye love."
"Night Lisha, John. Draco."
"Granger."
Hermione woke to the sound of banging against her door. Getting up, she opened the door.
"What?!"
"Beauty sleep over princess. We need ya." John grinned.
"Why?" She yawned.
"Me and Draco are off ta find food. So get moving."
Hermione sighed, using a refreshing spell to fully wake her up. Walking down the corridor she heard shouting at the end. It was Draco and Lisha. Stopping at the door, she listened in.
"You're not coming." Draco said.
"You can't tell me what to do!"
"It's not safe. I don't want you getting hurt."
"I can take care of myself Draco!"
"Yes, but I need to make sure you're safe."
"Draco."
"No means no, Lisha."
"I am not a fucking child Draco."
"I never said that."
"Listen here you twat, I am coming with you whether you like it or not."
"Lisha you can't."
"Why not?"
"Because I won't be able to concentrate."
"Oh grow the fuck up Draco. We're all going to die someday. End of discussion."
There was a loud bang and then silence. Had Draco hit her?! Hermione was about to open the door.
Draco pulled Lisha into his arms.
"Feel better now that you have destroyed that poor chair?"
Draco chuckled, "I really wish you'd stay here."
"Nope."
"Okay, you have to stay near me though."
"Ugh, I will."
"Come on then."
Hermione ran down the corridor, skidding to a halt at the canteen.
"There ya are! Here, take this." Jack shoved a baseball into her arms. Jack was wearing a black leather jacket and cargo pants. He looked like he meant business.
"What's this for?"
"Crushing tha bastards skulls in."
"That's gross Jack." Hermione turned to see Lisha and Draco walk in. Lisha was wearing a t-shirt and skinny jeans with converse, Hermione hadn't noticed the attire yesterday, she was just so overwhelmed. What was strange was Draco was also wearing muggle clothing. It was a change from the black robes worn in the wizarding world. He was wearing jeans and t-shirt with a starwars reference. Hermione raised an eyebrow.
"Starwars?"
"I chose it. He looked weird in that cloaky thing."
"It's called a robe, Lisha."
"Yeah well it looked weird."
Draco scowled. "Well let's not waste anymore time."
Tailing behind Hermione followed the group up a long row of stairs to the roof of their building. It was flat with a water tank and satellite dish. From there the group climbed down a ladder to an alleyway. Hermione stopped still when she saw at the end of the alleyway was one of the dead shuffling through the garbage. the guttural growls sent a chill down her spine. Jack reached for his crossbow, the arrow whistled through the air, the loud crunching off the arrow penetrating the skull. Draco's stormy grey eyes watched both Lisha and Hermione silently. Neither flinched or showed any reaction and Draco relaxed. They watched as Jack crept to the end of the alley, he beckoned them all forward. There was a sound of metal scraping metal as Draco unsheathed his sword. Jack made a motion of indicating in the direction they were going. Quickly and silently they moved, always staying in the shadows, Jack always in the lead and Draco covering the rear. Jack motioned for every to stop, and in front of them was a horde blocking their way. They hadn't noticed them yet, Draco grabbed Lisha's hand running towards the nearest building. The building was dark.
"Everyone be careful. Stay close. Lumos. We need to get to the roof." The room was illuminated, it turned out they had run into a clothing store. There was a growl behind them and before Hermione could comprehend what was happening Lisha had lodged her crowbar into it's skull. She grunted in effort as she wrenched the crowbar away. Draco stood in awe and shock as he watched her wipe the blood on a dress.
"Told you I can take care off myself."
"Jesus Christ. Remind me not to piss ya off." Jack whispered. Lisha grinned, tugging on Draco's hand, stealthily moving forward, stepping over fallen wracks of clothes. At the back of the store they reached the stairs. If there any zombies Draco made a good meal out of them and they reached the roof without a problem. The good thing about London was how close each building was to the other.
"Malfoy. Why don't we go to Diagon alley?"
"Lisha and Jack wouldn't get through and we wouldn't make it to the door of the Leakey Cauldron. Too many of the dead there."
Hemione sighed. "Oh." It seemed like a millennia had passed when they reached their destination. After overtaking the horde from the roof they had continued their journey on the ground, never stopping for rest.
"Asda? We came all this way, when there are about a hundred supermarkets in the city!" Hermione exclaimed. Draco pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Use your brain, Granger. There is less of a threat the further you go. Did your holiday destroy your brain cells?"
"Whatever Malfoy."
Jack walked up to the window, tapping it. They only waited a minute when a few of the dead slammed themselves against the window, snapping their jaws and clawing. Jack opened the door, taking a few step back, resting his crossbow on his shoulder, shooting any zombie in his way. Draco took a stance, slicing anything his path. Lisha and Hermione didn't need to move a muscle. Once it was clear, they entered the supermarket, chaining the door shut. They walked down the aisles collecting anything they could eat or use to survive. Hermione spent her time in the pharmacy, grabbing medication and surgical equipment.
"Hey." Hermione spun around.
"Hi Lisha." She smiled. Lisha walked up to the rows of medication.
"What are you looking for?"
"Salbutomol."
"Here." She threw a blue box towards Lisha, who caught it and used the inhalor. Lisha took a deep breath.
"Thanks. That's so much better."
"You're asthmatic?"
"Yeah. It's not much of a problem anymore." Hermione was glad she had brought her beaded bag, she walked to the back of the room, grabbing the oxygen tank.
"How are you going to carry that?"
"My bag. It has an enlargement charm and shrinking charm. Bigger on the inside."
"Oh. So, like the Tardis?"
"Tardis?" Hermione questioned.
"Yeah. Doctor Who. His spaceship is a police box, but it's huge on the inside."
"Oh, right! I haven't watched that since I was 11."
"Lisha? Granger?" Draco appeared round the corner. "It's getting dark, we'll have to stay here."
