Chapter 4
“What's going on is this,” Albus started, staring at the parchment he was holding, stroking his beard. “First of all, the bonds, all of them, are registered. Which means, they are legal. That's something that tells me we probably can't break them.” Hearing groans and seeing disgruntled looks from those affected, he shrugged, “There is nothing that can be done with that. I'm sorry.”
Pressing on, he moved to the next item on the list. “Next, the DMLE thinks they isolated the spell that came through the wards. It's the one that makes the most sense and seems to fit the time frame we gave them.” After seeing anticipatory looks, he explained, “From what was cast, it appears Tom tried to modify the Killing Curse. The residue shows the characteristics of that Unforgivable, though it's been changed. That doesn't mean it's what came through those wards. As mentioned, it probably mutated. What I did was give up the wards on the house, with the signed, binding agreement it goes no further. That's magically enforced, so we don't have to worry about it leaking out. They'll look into it, of course, and see what they can find.”
“How was the Killing Curse mutated,” Snape asked, plenty dour over the confirmation that they were all good and stuck. However, he was curious, and somewhat frightened, over what the Dark Lord may have done with that Unforgivable. If he experimented with one, that might mean he did with others as well.
“They think he modified it to kill more than one at once. My guess is he was trying to do away with everyone in this house,” Albus sighed, shaking his head. “That's not a good thing and something we need to worry about for all our sakes and safety. It's neither here nor there right now, though, when it comes to this situation.” Moving on, he said, “The next thing on the list is the DMLE has sent the readings I gave them on to a couple Unspeakables. They're going to try to find something to tone down the worst of the issues you are all experiencing. I'll be looking into it as well with the help of Alastor. We'll find something, somewhere, to help. It's just going to take time, nothing more.”
“Anything would be most useful, Albus,” Remus told him with a sigh and shake of his head. “Not to make this matter worse, but we need something before the full moon. That's coming in a little over a week. With what's here now, Lucius will be in extreme danger of infection even if I take the Wolfsbane because we don't have a long enough tether for me to be in a room alone.”
“Not something I thought of,” Albus sighed, making a note of that on the parchment. “I'll ensure you get the Wolfsbane, of course, but we do need to do something about that end as its pressing. I'll make sure we hurry to find something, even if it's temporary.”
“Yes, please,” Lucius sighed, crossing his arms over his chest, not even wanting to contemplate how bad that might end up if something wasn't found.
“On to the next item,” Albus continued. Looking at what was on the list, he sighed, starting to stroke his beard again. “This reaction that happened with Fleur—That's enough to tell me that we need to tread with caution when it comes to these bonds. While only one 'pairing' experienced it so far, I'm fairly certain that a form of it may be coming for everyone, at least in some way. I can't be sure, of course, but that's a good educated guess. Which means, for now, we're going to keep everyone that might be upsetting or do something that would set off someone here away. In fact, we're going to try to keep most away unless there is something pressing we have to attend to. I think, maybe, the bond might relax as time goes on and not have as violent of a reaction as it is at first. It just needs to settle to do that. As we all know, because there are new reactions showing up each day, that it's doing just that. We plan to ensure that those that might cause the worst problems won't come over.” Looking around, eyes lighting on Severus, who was still looking murderous and now had hot pink hair with some kind of makeup on, he added, “And amongst yourself you need to do the same. I understand this situation is a horrific one, but it won't help anyone if all of you end up 'at war' with each other and setting it off amongst yourselves. If it takes walking away because your temper is getting the better of you, that's something you need to do.”
Glowering at the barmy old man, Severus ground his teeth but nodded. He had seen enough of the reaction when it came to Fleur that he knew if he started with any of the rest, what might come would be worse.
Arthur had been sitting and listening in quietly up to this point. He was the only one to come along with Albus to help because four of his children were involved. This was where he chimed in, though. “I'll keep Molly away for now. The same with the kids and Hermione. As upset as they all are, they would set off nothing but a nightmare. That we don't need. They want to come over and talk to everyone, obviously, but I think its best they stay away.”
“It is,” Bill said though not going beyond that. He wasn't about to get into it with his father over this as he was worried what could come of it.
“Yes, as emotional as Molly is on some topics and knowing this will set off plenty, until she can stay calm, she needs to stay away,” Albus told the man firmly. “I've already spoken to Fleur about doing the same. There are others as well. We aren't sure what could happen if someone sets something off, so it's better safe than sorry.” Looking around and seeing nods, Albus pressed on.
“Next is that I've spoken to both the goblins and the Dragon Reserve. What I've managed is this; Bill and Charlie both have a week off. If we can't get something, somewhere, worked out between now and then, both employers are willing to talk over options. The goblins are someone I'm sure we can work something out with as Bill has plenty of vacation time built up, from what he said. The Dragon Reserve is willing to transfer Charlie to the one in Wales. That might be the way to go. If we can't get a longer tether or to where you can spend time apart, it's an easy commute and you can take Draco with you under Polyjuice or a glamour, one of the two. I have the paperwork if you chose to do that.”
“It is,” Charlie sighed, shaking his head. “Give me the forms and I'll fill them out. We'll work whatever out from there when it comes to Draco. I don't know how, but we will.”
“Let's see how this week goes and if we figure out a way to lengthen the tether or how much time we can spend apart then I'll deal accordingly,” Bill told him though not overly upset by this. He could easily take his vacation days.
Pleased with that, Albus moved on to other topics that weren't as pressing, such as what might come later, for example school with Harry and Draco then related areas with Severus and the twins. The twins were ones they had do something with because of their business, but it was going to end up worked out between the three of them.
Though Albus left after talking to everyone, Arthur didn't. He wanted to talk to his sons before he departed. Knowing this was a touchy dance, especially with Fred and George, he decided to talk to his eldest first.
Stopping Bill before he could leave with Harry and Sirius, he asked, softly, “Can I talk to you three alone before I go?” Seeing Bill give a wary nod then Sirius shoot him a cautious look, he sighed and added, “I promise it won't be anything upsetting or that will cause a reaction.”
“It better not, Dad,” Bill told him firmly. “You wouldn't want the reaction if it does.”
“My word,” Arthur assured him firmly with a nod.
Sighing, Bill nodded then motioned his father to follow them, giving Sirius and Harry a short shrug.
After leading him to one of the small parlors then shutting the door, Bill flopped down by where Harry and Sirius were seated. Looking at his father after he took a seat, he sighed then asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, hands clasped, “What do you want to talk about?”
“This mess, obviously,” Arthur sighed. Shaking his head, he told him, “Your mother—well, you can only imagine what's going on there. She's quite upset at what happened to all of you.”
“She needs to stay away,” Bill told him firmly, trying not to grind his teeth to keep from saying what he really wanted to. “So do Ginny, Ron and Hermione. That's all there is to it. The reaction to Fleur will be nice compared to what could be brought on by what those four will have to say.”
“I figured,” Arthur told him honestly. Glancing between the three across from him, he asked, quietly, keeping a respectful tone, “How much aren't you telling Albus? I'm guessing there is some, with what I know of you three.”
Before Bill could answer, Sirius chimed in and said, bluntly, “Albus was told all he needs to know. Period. He got the reaction and what we felt. That's all that needed said.”
“You know more then,” Arthur speculated, glancing between them.
“What we know we're keeping to ourselves,” Bill told his father plainly. “The ones in this house that need to know will. They are the ones it affects. It won't add anything to what Albus needs to know to figure this out.”
“It's about your relationship with Harry, isn't it?” Arthur asked softly, gazing at his son then his eyes flitting to Harry. Seeing Bill and Sirius, both, level a wary look at him, Arthur shook his head and smiled, “I figured that out long ago. If I had objected I would have said something then. I don't and never did.” Looking at Harry, he added, “I think Harry figured out I knew. At least I tried to get it across to him so he knew not to worry and that I approved.”
Nodding at that, actually pleased and relieved, Bill told him, “It does. Or we think so. At least partially. The other part might have to do with Harry's relationship with Sirius. We aren't really sure, but it makes sense.”
“Let me see what I can get across to Albus that might help with that,” Arthur told him softly.
“The relationship between Harry and Bill will not be brought up,” Sirius said firmly, arms crossed over his chest. “It's none of anyone's damned business and it's up to them to reveal it. That's all there is to it.”
Gazing at Sirius, Arthur gave a slow nod. “I won't say a word, I swear.” Looking between the three again, he sighed then added quietly, “It's going to end up coming out though. At least at some point.”
“We know,” Bill told him. “We just want to hold it off as long as we can. There is a major explosion coming from mum and the rest over what happened, so we don't need to add anything to it. It'll be easier to deal with if we take it a little at a time, Dad.” Tone firming up, he said, “You already know how bad this is going to get.”
“I do,” Arthur admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “I'll do what I can to minimize it.”
“You need to, Arthur,” Sirius told him plainly. “This is not a joke. They start with Bill, you're going to set off Harry. That's what brought on the bit with Fleur. It wasn’t something he could stop and there was no reason for him to even feel that. He admitted he didn't know where it came from or why he couldn't put a leash on it. And he tried. Anything worse than we dealt with when it came to Fleur is going to cause a nightmare. And if any of them take after Harry, chances are that's going to make what happened to Fleur look nice, as it'll probably set both Bill and I off. You don't want that.”
Glancing between the three, Arthur then groaned and nodded. “I understand. I don't know what I can do to hold it off, but I'll try.”
“You need to do more than try,” Sirius shot right back, glaring at him. “We don't need this to become any worse than it already is! And them setting off anything is going to do that. Put a leash on all of them, Arthur. We both know you can stand up to someone when you need to. This is the time you need to do it! Harry's already told me that he knows what's coming with Ron, Ginny and Hermione. You don't want what will happen if they start. Or Ginny to keep right on trying with him. The backlash from the bond that'll come if that happens won't be pretty. Is that what you want to face and deal with? Molly will end up bad enough with this and that's only with what's here. If a backlash comes, it'll make it worse. Then you're bound to get something like an all out war. None of us need that.”
Looking at Sirius, Arthur's eyes slid to Bill, who was nodding. Sighing, he shook his head, not sure what to do or say.
“He's right, Dad,” Bill told him bluntly. “We all know that you try your best to get along the easiest and that it's hard at times to deal with mum as well as all that's going on for you. There's also the fact that you don't want the fight that's coming between all of us. None of us do. It's going to, though, if someone doesn't rein them in and put a stop to it. And none of us know what will happen if they set this off when it comes to the bond. Fleur—she wasn't hurt, thankfully. What we don't know is what might happen if someone does worse than what she did, with any of us. That's what you need to stop. With whom is involved when it comes to this nightmare, chances are that it will because we already know what's coming. Mum is going to throw a wobbler over it. We know all know that. Harry and I were already prepared for it. Ginny is going to keep on trying because she wants Harry more than anything in the world. Nothing anyone says is going to deter her. Ron and Hermione are bigots of the first order and will blow up over this, though for different reasons. Any pokes from them is going to cause a huge problem. Add onto that something you already know, that Charlie, Fred, George and I are fed up and you have the makings of a real nightmare.”
Rubbing a hand over his face, looking at the four, Arthur didn't know what to say. Finally, after thinking it over, he said, “I'll do what I can.”
Having heard this before from his dad, Bill just groaned and shook his head.
“What do you want me to do, Bill?” Arthur asked his son, tone exasperated.
“Put your damned foot down for once,” Sirius shot at him, tone a snarl. “Lay it out, plainly, and tell them to knock their shite off! Two of those involved in this are your children. Act like their father. One is your wife. Don't put up with it. If the other involved can't toe the line, send her arse home! It's that damned simple. Another alternative is I can ban them from the house. That's quite easy to do and I don't have a problem taking that step. What do you want to do, Arthur?”
“It's not that simple,” Arthur told Sirius with a shake of his head.
“No, I don't suppose it is for you,” Sirius told him, rolling his eyes. “You'd rather lose four of your sons than do something.”
Face reddening, Arthur felt his temper spike, but was cut off before he could formulate a response to Sirius.
“He's right,” Bill told him, leaning back and folding his arms over his chest, looking at the floor. “You've already lost four of us and knew it. You knew why we left home and stay away. We're back, in a way anyway, but it continues. If mum completely loses it, we're going to do it right back. Even before this, we were heading there, Dad. I can safely speak for Charlie, George and Fred when I say the end was coming. It was before the bonding. We’ve put up with all we can. And the end has now here. Harry and I were prepared for the worst when it came out that we were together. We knew just where it was going to come from and who would do what, too. This will just aggravate it. Nothing more.”
“None of you know how hard this is!” Arthur told them, tone weary.
“Yeah, I do. The thing is, Arthur, you're the one to blame,” Sirius snorted, shaking his head. Before the man could say anything, he explained, “You've let it go on for so long that you can't stop it now. My father was the same way. He let my mother lord over everything because it made his life easier. All he did was agree with what she said or wanted, even if he didn't. He tried to do things for me on the sly or to let me know he didn't feel that way, but it wasn't enough. Even leaving me everything when he died didn't make up for it. As far as I'm concerned, he was no better than she was because he allowed it to go on though he could have ended it. And I see him as someone no better than she was.” Stopping, Sirius glared at the man. Quietly, he said, “It's not your intentions or what you feel for someone that makes it all fine, Arthur. It's what you do to prove it. Standing aside and let it go on because it makes life easier on you isn't proving shite. It's making you no better in the end because you could have done something.”
Looking at Sirius, Arthur didn't know what to think. The first thing that came to mind was he wanted to deny what was said and tell him here was wrong. He wasn't, though. Sirius was right, though he wouldn't admit to the totality of how right he was. “I'll see what I can do,” he finally said then nodded and stood, planning to talk to the rest of his sons before he left. Once he did, he had a lot of thinking to do.
Watching his father go, Bill shook his head and snorted. “I hope that did some good, but I somehow doubt it did.”
“If it doesn't, he has only himself to blame for what's coming. We've given him every warning we can about how bad this is. All it takes is a little arse to stand up and do the right thing.” Sirius snorted, looking down at the floor, shaking his head.
“Dad—I love dad, alright? Let me make that clear. It's just—he's so used to doing what's easy and not what's right that 'right' doesn't mean much anymore. He thinks that letting us know he loves and is proud of us is enough.”
Before Bill could say anymore, Sirius finished for him, “He doesn't get it's not enough and never will be. And never will get it until all of you make it clear. Until all of you stand up and say that, Bill, and do it in front of your mother, making it clear to her as well, nothing is going to change. The problem comes in that he still has you, in a way. You've let him get away with this for years. So, there are no consequences to whatever it is you say. I get that you love your dad and want him in your life as he's been supportive in his own way. And that you have at least one parent that loves you. The thing is, though, he's not being a parent. You're all just enabling him to keep right on doing it that way and allowing it to happen because there is no consequence to his lack of actions to set it right. If there is, he might do something. If he doesn't, you're better off without him.” Lowering his voice and softening his tone, Sirius added, “You can trust me when I say that comes from experience. He thinks it's enough. It's not and never will be. You're better off without it. Because being alone is better than someone half-arsing it.”
Feeling Harry lean against him, Bill slipped an arm around his lover and held him close. Sirius was right. It hurt to hear it, more than he would admit, but he was correct. That's what made it all the worse. Shaking his head, he sighed, “Yeah, you're right. Let's hope he makes the right choice this time. I'm not holding my breath on that, but I'm hoping.”
“If he doesn't, it's his problem,” Sirius told him as gently as he could. “Nothing is better than half-arsing shite and taking a backseat because it's easier on him. He's your father and that was his choice. Just like what's gone on with your mum is his decision as well. He chose to let it go on because it was easier. His problem. If he didn't like the way things went, there was an out. This was easier on him and a way for him to ensure none of you blamed him. He holds his share.” Seeing Bill shake his head, Sirius put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it. “It's his choice now. He has to make it.”
Nodding, Bill said nothing, holding Harry close. It hurt, it did, especially not knowing what his father might choose.
“Come on. Let's go upstairs and rest for a bit. That and find something to do. I'm sure we can play some cards or something. If anyone needs to find us, they can come up,” Sirius nudged gently, figuring it would do them good and take Bill's mind off what was going on. Seeing Bill and Harry stand, Sirius gave a bit of a grin then said, “Besides, we need to give Harry a lesson in the great art of shampoo horns. That's something you can't grow up not knowing how to do.”
Grinning just a bit, Bill chuckled and said, hand still on Harry's shoulder, “I haven't done that in years!”
“It's a lost art, one I’m sure Harry doesn't know. Which means, as a rite of passage, he has to learn,” Sirius told him firmly, heading that way.
“This should be good,” Harry chuckled, grinning. He felt for Bill, really he did, as he knew he loved his dad, but he could understand Sirius' point too. He just hoped that, for once, Arthur would make the right choice.
“Think moose antlers, Harry!” Sirius told him with a huge grin. “Bright pink moose antlers!”
“Oh brother,” Harry chuckled, shaking his head, following along. “What have I got myself into?”
