Chapter 3: Settling In
~~~Chapter Begins~~~ Karasu rolled over and groaned softly as the artificial sunlight of the colony shined directly into his face. He had forgotten to fully close his blinds after spending some time just watching the neighborhood the night before and now he was paying for it. After several long moments of debating whether or not he wanted to try closing the blinds and curling back up to get a bit more sleep, he checked his alarm clock and made a soft sound similar to a very quiet cat’s growl. His alarm would be going off in less than ten minutes and there was no point in him even trying to get a few more moments of sleep. If he was lucky he would fall asleep right as his alarm went off.He sat up and turned his alarm clock off with a soft huff. His ears twitched as he got up and went over to the easy chair, where a clean set of Duo’s clothes were waiting for him. He didn’t mind wearing Duo’s clothes because they weren’t too horribly big for him, but he was looking forward to getting his own clothes. He smiled as he started to get ready, his eyes wandering the room as he did. Some people might think the room bland, but he found the shades of brown to be calming. He wouldn’t have minded a little bit of forest green to accent the room, but he would be happy with anything as long as it wasn’t bright orange. He paused and wrinkled his nose at the thought of having any room painted bright orange. Such a color scheme felt kind of familiar to him, but he couldn’t figure out way. It couldn’t be his own room, missing memories or not he knew that he would never agree to that. The thought of a bedroom with a bright orange theme continued to circle within his mind as he finished getting dressed and left his own room.
He found both Wufei and Duo downstairs in the kitchen. Duo was making breakfast while Wufei was sitting at the table in civilian clothes, reading the morning newspaper. Karasu smiled when he noticed that Wufei was wearing a slim pair of reading glasses. He didn’t know why, but seeing one of his new housemates wearing glasses made him think about having worn glasses himself. He didn’t know if he had ever actually worn glasses because his vision seemed perfectly fine, but the feeling was still there. Wufei glanced up and nodded to the young cat-boy as he sat down at the kitchen table. As soon as Karasu was sitting comfortably at the table, Wufei folded the paper and put his glasses back into the eyeglass case sitting on the table next to his cup of coffee.
“Did you sleep well Karasu?”
“I did. I forgot to close the blinds last night before I went to bed though.”
“I take it the artificial sunlight woke you up this morning?”
“It did. My alarm was only about ten minutes from going off when I woke up, so I couldn’t try to go back to sleep. I hate it when that happens.”
“If you’re still tired, you can take a nap when we return. We’ll be leaving to get you some clothing of your own in an hour or so. I decided that it would be best if we got this done as early in the day as we could in order to avoid the crowds. After we finish shopping I’ll be going into the office for a little while. Lady Une has decided that she doesn’t want me involved in field work unless I absolutely have to be until we know exactly who you really are and what happened to you.”
Duo grinned as he brought two plates with scrambled eggs, toast, and sausages over to the table. He placed the plates in front of Karasu and Wufei before going and getting his own plate and another cup of coffee, which he placed in front of the open seat beside Wufei. Finally, he brought Karasu a cup of milk before sitting down and digging into his own breakfast happily.
“You’re gonna love the mall kid. There’s a wide variety of stores that you can choose from. We figured that we could get you some stuff to entertain yourself with while getting you your own clothes.”
“Duo will likely try to drag you to every single store whether you want to go into it or not. Don’t worry; I’ll keep him in check. If you start feeling too tired to continue, we can return home at any time. Just don’t overdo things today Karasu, you’re still recovering from that head wound.”
“I won’t. I’m looking forward to getting my own clothing, but I also want to heal as soon as I can and I know that overdoing everything will only slow my healing down.”
“I’m glad you know that rest is important.”
The three of them continued to make small talk as the they ate their breakfast. The rest of that hour passed fairly quickly and before Karasu knew it, they were preparing to leave for the mall. The car that Duo led them to was an old two-door pre-colony car that had been beautifully restored.
“1964 Chevy Impala, I restored it myself. It’s my baby. It took me nearly six months to track down all of the parts for her. Pre-colony cars may be extremely popular, but the parts for most models are still hard as hell to find.”
“I don’t know much about cars. At least I don’t think I do.”
“If you’d like, I could teach you some of the stuff I know about them. It might be helpful for you have that kind of info.”
“I think I might like to learn.”
“Duo is the best person to go to for information about most mechanical objects. He’s even been asked to work on some of the Preventer’s vehicles. Lady Une herself made the request.”
Karasu smiled as Duo grinned sheepishly as he unlocked the driver’s side door and got into the car before reaching over and unlocking the passenger side door. Wufei opened the passenger side door and folded the the seat forward before motioning for Karasu to get into the back seat. The three of them continued to talk about cars as they traveled to the mall. Once they were at the mall, Duo led them to a store called Urban Chaos*. The store had a fairly dark interior and sold clothes that matched the interior. Karasu grinned as he looked around the store while Duo followed him closely and Wufei stood close to the doorway to keep an eye on who entered and exited the store. Aside from a collection of shirts that caught Karasu’s attention, there were also several pairs of pants that looked really cool. They were baggy and generally had two colors to them with chains, studs, and zippers accenting them. Karasu took a pair of black pants and green pants off of the rack and held them up.
“What do you think of these Duo?”
“Tripp pants are almost always a good choice; the green even matches your eyes.”
“Do you have any of these?”
“I’ve got a couple pairs of them. The pockets are great for smuggling candy and cans of pop into a movie theater.”
“Why am I not surprised that you’ve smuggled stuff into movie theaters.”
“Because everyone who meets me knows I’m awesome like that.”
“You’re a dork, did you know that? I’m going to go try these on real quick.”
“If they fit you’ll have to show me what they look like on you.”
Duo grinned as he followed Karasu back to the fitting area and leaned against the wall beside the door to the fitting room Karasu entered. A few moments later, Karasu opened the door and slipped out of the room, the pants jingling as he moved in front of Duo. Duo grinned as he looked Karasu over.
“It looks they fit you right. But how do they feel Karasu?”
“They feel really comfortable. I like them.”
“I take it you’re going to want a couple pairs of them?”
“Yeah. I’ll get changed back into the clothing I’m burrowing from you and then pick a couple of other pairs out.”
Karasu returned from trying the Tripp Pants on and then he and Duo went back to the rack that contained the other pairs. In the end, Karasu picked out two other pairs of black Tripp Pants, one with electric blue cloth accents and one with red cloth accents, in addition to the pair of black and green pants he had tried on. Then the two of them began to browse the tee-shirt selection**. Karasu finally picked out five black shirts with slogans on them. One of them said “Embrace the Darkness” in white with a butterfly under it, another said “Kitty Feels Dirty” written in white with paw prints under it, another said “Weird & Wonky” in purple lettering, the fourth said “It was EPIC and I LOLed” in white, one that had a cupcake with a kitty face topped with a curl of icing and a cherry that said “Kitty turned into a cupcake to make you happy. Are you #*$%ing happy now?” in white, and the last one said “i like socks” in white. They browsed the store for a little while longer, but Karasu didn’t find anything else he liked so they purchased the shirts and pairs of pants he picked out and left for another store.
The second store they stopped at sold jeans and a different variety of tee-shirts. Like before, Wufei stayed close to the entrance of the store while Duo accompanied Karasu around the store. Karasu began looking through the store’s selection of jeans, finally picking out two pairs of black jeans and two pairs of faded blue jeans. Duo followed him as he went back to the fitting area to try them on. All of the jeans fit while also being loose enough that he could hide his tail down the back of them without arousing any suspicions, so he turned his attention to getting some more shirts. He was particularly interested in the slogan tees. He finally picked out a white tee-shirt with the words “And yet, despite the look on my face, you’re still talking” in black, a black tee-shirt with the words “What I really need are minions” in white, a dark grey tee-shirt with the words “Sarcasm is the human body’s natural defense against stupid” in red, a blue shirt with the words “I tried to be normal once. Worst two minutes of my life” in black, and a black tee-shirt with the words “I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it” written in red and white.
Then he turned his attention to the hoodies next to the tee-shirts. He picked out three of those. One of them was black with white skulls on them, one of them was black with a green four leaf clover on it, and the final one was light grey with a tiger and an eastern dragon facing off in front of a Yin Yang sign with kanji and fire around it. He wanted a couple of hoodies because they were a good way to hide his cat ears. Then he got a couple of pairs of tennis shoes, a pair of black and white Converse and a pair of completely black Converse. There wasn’t anything else he liked at the second store they were at, so the three of them left for another one.
The third store they went to was kind of like Urban Chaos but they were more focused on accessories than clothing. Like the other stores, Wufei kept an eye on the entrance of the store while Duo went with Karasu. Karasu went straight to the hats section. He picked out a black and grey checkered beanie, a black beanie with golden crescent moons on it, a rainbow striped beanie, and a black beanie with a green four leaf clover on it. Then he began looking at some of the other accessories. He ended up picking out a black and green beaded necklace with a four leaf clover pendant and a set of three beaded bracelets. One of the bracelets was blue and black, one was green and black, and the last one was black, green, and blue. Karasu examined the accessories a little more before deciding that he had everything he wanted.
The last store they visited was the book store. This time Duo stayed by the entrance while Wufei browsed the store with Karasu. Wufei found a couple of new books for himself, while Karasu took an interest in the fantasy section.
“We don’t have many fantasy novels at home. I take you’ve found some interesting books here?”
“Yeah, I don’t know why but the fantasy section caught my attention.”
“There’s nothing wrong with liking fantasy novels. Duo just isn’t big on reading, and I prefer contemporary and classical literature as well as non-fiction works.”
“I like non-fiction works, too. At least I’m pretty sure that I do.”
“I’m sure that you’ll like at least a few of the books we have at home. When we get back home you should take a look in the library. Speaking of heading home, I think we should make our purchases and head back now. I’d rather not be here when the afternoon rush starts, too much risk of being split up.”
“Okay. I think I’ve found the books I want, so I’m ready whenever you are.”
They got up to the counter and made their purchases before rejoining Duo. They were able to get to the car without much trouble and get their bags packed into the trunk of the car without anything happening. Getting into the car and then getting out of the parking lot was just as easy.
“Now, we’ve got one last stop to make so that you can get some socks and underwear, but we can go to the Wal-Mart near the house on the way home to get those.”
“So… This Geneticist guy you’re both worried about, what’s the deal with him?”
“I’m going to let Wufei explain that one. I’m not entirely sure about it myself kid.”
“I can’t give you much information at the moment Karasu; it’s an ongoing Preventers investigation. However, I can tell you that he’s a wanted criminal who has killed well over a hundred people so far. We believe that you might be his only surviving victim.”
“He doesn’t sound very pleasant. Do you know why he’s hurting people like that?”
“He’s obsessed with human genetics, we aren’t entirely sure exactly what he’s attempting to do, but we do know that he’s running genetic experiments on innocent people. He likely kidnaps his victims, but we don’t know where he takes them once he has them. We’re hoping that you’ll be able give us details we don’t currently have about him once your memories return.”
“I hope that I can help with that. It sounds like he needs to be stopped as quickly as possible. Er… My staying with you guys isn’t going to hinder your work with the Preventers, will it Wufei?”
“I won’t be doing field work for a while, but that does not hinder me. Keeping you safe is going to help us capture a violent criminal, which is part of my job as an agent of the Preventers Agency. I see this as part of my work that requires me to stay away from the office for a while. I’m only going into the office today to confirm my plans for the next several weeks.”
“Okay. I’m glad that I won’t be hindering your work as a Preventer.”
The rest of the car ride was mostly silent aside from the radio, which was playing classic metal. They stopped at the local Wal-Mart to get Karasu some underwear and socks. While they were at the Wal-Mart he also chose a pack of plain white tee-shirts and a pack of plain black tee-shirts as well as seven different pairs of pajama pants. Two of the pairs were plain black, one was red and black plaid, one was blue and black plaid, one was green and black plaid, and two were pair of plain grey pants.
When they got home, Karasu, Duo, and Wufei carried the bags filled with their purchases upstairs. The books they had purchased were carried into the library, while Karasu’s new clothes were taken into his bedroom. Once the bags had been placed on the floor at the foot of Karasu’s bed, he was called into the library by Wufei. Karasu’s ears twitched as he pushed the hood of his hoodie back and he slipped into the library. Wufei smiled at him as he came into the room.
“I figured that you’d want to help getting the new books put up. I’m afraid that your bedroom doesn’t really have enough room for its own bookshelf, there wasn’t even enough room for a standard dresser without making it too cramped for comfort. There is a mini storage dresser in the bottom of the closet for you to put your socks, underwear, and pajamas in.”
“Okay. I plan on getting my clothes put away in a little bit. So, Duo said you have a particular setup for the library. I’ve been curious about that setup.”
“It’s simple once you get used to it. I actually used the same system that most libraries do, but because my library is a private one, I don’t have a bunch of people who mess the system up all the time. The books are grouped alphabetically by author and then each section is done alphabetically by title with the exception of multiple book series, which are done in numerical order.”
“Okay, that sounds fairly simple. So Christopher Paolini’s books would go between…” Karasu moved over to wear the works written by people whose last names started with the letter P. “William Roger Paton and Marin Preda.”
“Exactly.”
Wufei had clearly set things up so that he would have plenty of room for any new books, because none of the rows were one-hundred percent full. This made adding both Wufei’s new books and the ones that Karasu had picked out to the library a piece of cake. Once the books were put away, Karasu began to look at the rest of the books. The room wasn’t huge, but there was still a lot of variety in the room. Wufei had some books about the mechanics behind space travel, some contemporary fiction, several books about nature, several books about ancient Chinese and Japanese lore, and even a sizable collection of books about ancient Greece and Rome, among several other subjects.
“I need to head to the office now Karasu. You’re welcome to join Duo in whatever it is he’s planning to do today, go back to sleep, curl up with a book, or do anything else you’d like. Just make sure that you stay in or very close to the house. And make sure you let Duo know if you do decide to go outside.”
“Okay. I think I’ll get something to read and then go downstairs to spend time with Duo.”
“Alright. I’ll see you when I get back.”
Wufei left the library and headed downstairs to leave for the office. Karasu paused for a few moments before grabbing a book about space travel from one of the shelves. Then he headed downstairs to figure out what Duo was up to. He found Duo yelling at the TV screen with a video game controller in his hands. He sat down in an easy chair next to the side of the couch Duo was sitting on and began to read his book. It was nearly half an hour later when Duo finally realized that he wasn’t alone. He paused the game and chuckled softly.
“Sorry kid. I didn’t realize that you’d come downstairs. Do you want to watch TV?”
Karasu was so absorbed by the book that he was reading that he didn’t realize that Duo was talking to him. Duo chuckled and shook his head before reaching over and rocking the chair just enough to get Karasu’s attention.
“Uh, what?” Karasu lowered the book and quickly looking around. “S-sorry, did you say something Duo?”
“Yeah, I asked if you wanted to watch anything on TV.”
“I’m content to just read, thank you. I’ve found a wonderful book about space travel. It’s absolutely fascinating and it’s helped me to better understand what Wufei told me about space travel on our way here.”
“You’re just like Wufei. When he starts reading a book that catches his interest, he can get into a zone where he reads for hours on end without noticing anything that’s going on around him. It’s actually pretty entertaining.”
Karasu laughed as Duo went back to his video game. They spent the rest of the time they were alone together like that, Duo playing his video game and Karasu reading his book. A couple of hours later, Wufei returned home. After he had gone upstairs and changed into civilian clothes, he returned to the living room with his own book. Karasu glanced up at Wufei, his ears twitching slightly, as he watched Wufei get comfortable on the couch next to Duo. The three of them were mostly silent throughout the evening, aside from occasional yelling from Duo when something didn’t go right in his game.
~~~Chapter Ends~~~
A/N: I’m REALLY sorry about waiting so long to post this chapter. To quote the film The Croods, “Still Alive!” I’m sure that you’re wondering what the hell happened to me. The truth is that it’s a combination of having burnt myself out of this story a bit and having NO time to write anything but school related papers for the last several months. I was hoping to get this chapter posted at the start of the holidays but we’ve had things going on the entire break so I couldn’t do it. I’m hoping that I’ll have more time to write over the next semester, though I can’t promise anything. I’m also not sure exactly what the new update schedule for this story will be, but I’m going to try my best.Responses to Reviews: As of right now I only have two reviews to respond to, so I’m going to put my responses here. If I get to a point where I have too many reviews after each chapter to respond to here, I will start making LiveJournal entries specifically to respond to reviews. You can find my LiveJournal by going into my AFF.Org bio and clicking on the Live Journal link in my Journals/Blogs category. Now, onto the responses.MizzieMay: I’m glad that you’re liking the story so far and I hope that I continue to deliver a good story. As for how the characters are interacting and the like, just wait until the story really gets going ;).Calixandria_420: I’m glad that you like what you’ve read so far. As a frequent fan fiction reader as well as a fan fiction writer, I’m no stranger to that indescribably feeling of wanting to know what happens next and wishing that the story I’m reading could be updated more frequently. Unfortunately, I’m a full-time student who just happens to be taking the summer off from classes. If I end up getting into a “zone” where I update more frequently I won’t hold back, but I can’t promise anything.*To be honest this store is actually kind of based on Hot Topic as it USED to be. I used to love shopping at Hot Topic, but they’ve changed their merchandise too much for my liking.
