“So” Remus said sitting on Lidia’s bed with her while he read through the information that Natasha had given them about Greeter Hall “We’ll spend tonight in the hall, record our experience there and then what?”
“Wait until the next investigation comes up” Lidia answered with a shrug “Scared?”
“Positively terrified” He answered “How will I survive an entire night with Natasha making sexual advances at me?”
“The way you always do” She answered with a laugh.
“Sleep with her, man!” They heard from the portrait above her bed “Do it for me!”
“Severus” Remus said “I will not sleep with her, I don’t...feel anything for her”
“Believe me” Snape said “If you sleep with her, you will feel something!”
“Remus” Lidia said, breaking up what would have turned in to an argument “Would you like to come home with me for Christmas holiday?”
“Your father...” He started “The deal...”
“Had you staying away from us long enough” She said “Please” She pouted and he knew that he would give in to her because she was too adorable when she pouted, she moved closer and knelt on the bed next to him “It will be you, me, Natasha, Scorpius and Lanni”
“Are you sure it’s a good idea to bring five of us home?” He asked.
“Come on” She plopped down on her bottom next him “I want you...to come home with me” She pouted again and he sighed.
“Fine” He answered “But if your father kills me don’t be surprised!”
“If he does” Lidia promised “I’ll revive you”
“Oh sure” Snape said “Revive him, I want to be revived for only one hour and you say no, but him...it’s only because you want to sleep with him”
“I do not!” She hissed and when Remus raised his eyebrows she blushed “Well, I mean...you know...maybe...not now...Shut up Snape!”
“Are you sure that my going with you guys to Greeter Hall is a good idea?” Remus asked, it was a question that had been haunting him for a while but he only now had the guts to ask her.
“Why wouldn’t it be?” She asked clearly confused.
“Never mind” He muttered.
“He’s afraid” Snape said “That he may actually get some feelings for you...or perhaps he already has feelings for you and he fears that he will act upon them”
“Professor” Lidia said staring imploringly at him “Please”
“I guess I will visit my portrait at Hogwarts” Snape said standing and walking around his chair “The Headmistress is still slightly scared of me...I like to sit among the other pictures and make her uncomfortable with irritated sighs and noncommittal noises and then pretend to sleep when she looks at me”
“Have fun” Lidia said shaking her head and watching him with obvious love on her face, he really was one of her best friends which made her wonder if that was strange in any way.
“I should go” Remus started to get up.
“Is he right?” Lidia asked “Is Snape right?”
“I don’t know” Remus answered with a sigh “I’d love to say no but...I can’t feel anything for you”
“Why not” She asked innocently.
“Because it’s sick” He said “I am too old for you. I held you as a baby, took care of you when you were young and watched you grow up”
“Remus” She looked at him “I am not saying lets get married...I’m not even suggesting we date, I’m just interested in seeing where this goes”
“Where it goes” He repeated then deflated “Alright, how do explain it to your father?”
“It doesn’t matter” She answered “Not now”

Dressed in comfortable black tight yoga pants with an equally black (and tight) t-shirt along with a coat and dark sneakers Lidia made her way with Natasha to the hall they would be staying at. Remus and Scorpius had gone on ahead about a half an hour before them claiming they were making sure that it was safe for the women to set foot in it. They were so adorable when they acted manly, but both women knew that it was all an act, they were scared. She had to admit that her heart was pounding something akin to fear but could be just anticipation. Natasha had been bouncing off the walls with her own anticipation all day and as the sun was starting to go down she was barely able to sit still on the bus (yes, a muggle bus) as it dropped everyone off at their destinations.
“Okay everyone” The leader said “Some of your group members went over early to get the lay out. You will be dropped off at you final destinations now, the first ones off will be the first ones picked up at six in the morning so be ready” He looked at the paper in his hands and sighed “First off is Miss Granger and...Natasha”
“Awesome” Natasha breathed bouncing up and down with the bumps and her own nerves.
“Natasha” He said again “Why is it in the space for your last name you just wrote Natasha again?”
“There is no last name here” She said it as if it were the dumbest question she’d ever heard “Like Cher or Madonna. I go by Natasha, that is all”
“Okay” He shrugged “Whatever. This is your stop” They slowed down and then came to a complete stand still outside of a huge mansion-like stone building “Good luck and we’ll see you in the morning”
“Thank you” Lidia said as she and Natasha walked out of the bus and on to the street.
“Remus is in there” Natasha said as she turned the old key in the big gate that kept the place private.
“Yeah so?” Lidia asked she walked through and waited as it was pulled closed again and relocked.
“So...” Natasha looked at her “He’s been looking pretty good these past few days and he always has his eyes on you” She smiled and bumped her shoulder “I think you should go after him”
“He doesn’t like me like that” Lidia blushed and she kept her eyes trained on the ground.
“I beg to differ” Natasha said “He may continually say that he isn’t interested but his eyes follow you through every room, remain locked on you at all times and the look in there almost screams ‘you belong to me’ even if he refuses to say the words aloud”
“Whatever” Lidia said.
They found themselves standing at the bottom step of what could only be described as an outdoor staircase that led to the front door. Lidia looked at Natasha and they both took deep breaths before making their way up the steps to the front door, Natasha’s hand shook slightly as she reached for the rusty, aged old-fashioned door handle. But it wouldn’t budge, the boys should be inside so it should be unlocked, she tried a few more times before sticking the key in the lock and turning it. Only that wouldn’t budge either, in exasperation she pushed harder and harder before moving aside to let Lidia have a go at it. Finally she too admitted defeat and stepped back to look at her friend, Natasha climbed up the side and peered in to the windows. The Russian woman usually wore six-inch heels with everything, so it was strange to see her in a pair of black sleeper pants and a ratty old hoodie, Lidia knew however, that under that hoodie was probably a skin tight t-shirt or tank top. The sneakers on her feet looked out of place and as she jumped down with a look of utter defeat on her face Lidia was reminded again that she was only about 5’4” tall.
“We cannot get in” She announced “Where are the boys?”
“I hope they’re not hurt” Lidia said thinking about Remus more than Scorpius.
“We’re not” Said a soft voice from behind them and they turned to see both males at the bottom of the stairs looking at them “We couldn’t get in that way either, the key will open the kitchen door though”
“Oh good” Lidia said as she made her way towards them, Scorpius threw something at her that made her scream as she realized that it was a spider. It was his way of saying ‘hi’ without having to actually be nice to her, because apparently that is the worse thought ever. Natasha caught his arm and pulled him away, not so subtly leaving Remus and Lidia alone a few feet behind them.
“Are you scared?” Remus asked as he found and killed the spider that had been running up her arm.
“I don’t believe in ghosts” Lidia told him sternly and then blushed a little “However, at night in a creepy old mansion...I may be a little more open-minded”
“Me too” He confided “I was in there” He nodded to the hall “The place is huge and it will be easy to get lost in there”
“Not if Natasha is near” Lidia pointed out as the other woman let out a loud whoop as the kitchen door opened on first try “She’s too loud to lose”
“True” He laughed and helped her up the step in to the house.
It was dusty and musty smelling in the house. There were shadows everywhere and they were only stretching bigger, reaching towards the four of them like welcoming fingers that, once having a hold of you, refused to let go. The air almost seemed thicker in the kitchen and it felt as if the house itself was holding in its breath as they entered. Slowly, holding on tightly to Scorpius’s hand, Natasha walked further in to the quickly darkening room and lit an oil lamp. Lidia moved aside to allow Remus to enter the house and then started to close the door. She gave one last, almost longing look to the wide and seemingly never-ending backyard before she fully closed the door and turned the lock. Natasha was looking eagerly around the kitchen, her fear it appeared was completely gone replace instead by the kind of joy that one usually sees on a child’s face around Christmas time while opening presents.
“There’s a note” Lidia pointed and a second later Scorpius was holding it out for Natasha to read aloud.
“It’s the rules” She said “No leaving the grounds before six in the morning, searching the grounds is fine and sleeping is okay. Make sure to capture everything but not the stuff that doesn’t need to be witnessed” She held up four copies of something “These are matching maps of Greeter Hall along with a packet containing the history of this place”
“Nice” Lidia said taking the papers and handing them to the boys.
“The cameras are right here” Remus said picking up a box from the floor near where he was standing. He began to hand out the handhelds to the rest and then held out a bunch of other cameras “These are all on batteries” He told them “I’ll start setting them up in each room” He went to the door “Scorpius, will you help?”
In the end the guys put the cameras where the girls told them too. Then they all sat in the living room area and read through the packet of history, it was a dark, depressing and overly bloody past. To Lidia who was sitting against the wall near the doorway leading in to the front hallway, it was the same muggle story that was told in every town to explain the creepy old house that no one lived in. A man in the mid-1700’s came over from Ireland or England with his young wife and their two children, he was very wealthy and had this house built for his young bride, she became terrified of the house about a year or two after living there. She claimed that she heard people talking in empty rooms and children laughing when her own were in bed and asleep. Her first child a son got sick and died when he was fifteen and their daughter died when she was thirteen in a carriage accident leading up to the house. The wife killed herself after that, hanging herself in the ballroom, the husband became a drunk and ended up dying after a bad fall down the stairs that broke his neck.
“Well” Lidia said “This sounds unpleasant”
“The orphanage stories are terrible” Natasha said with a shudder “Kids dying after falls on the stairs, older students committing suicide...even a nun that killed not only herself but four children...it’s all so horrible”
“It’s filled with horror” Remus agreed “What’s the plan?”
“Stay together!” Scorpius demanded as he looked around the house, they had all become aware of the eerie silence and the wind that made no noise and yet whipped through the house.
“The rules in the group say that we have to break up for at least ten minutes” Natasha said almost eagerly “We have to investigate a room by ourselves, ask questions to the spirits and just experience what is happening around us”
“Then let’s do it now” Lidia said with a shudder while she looked at her watch “It’s nine”
They all set out in different directions after handing out the muggle walkie-talkies that were provided to them. Lidia’s hands shook as she walked up the stairs that had killed quite a few people. She tried to remind herself that she was a witch and had her wand with her right at that moment, however she also knew that her magic would do nothing against a muggle ghost. The stairs creaked under her weight but she made it to the top without and accidents, then again everyone who had died had done so while going down the stairs not up.
“Okay” She said shakily turning the handheld to herself “My name is Lidia Granger and I am part of Natasha’s paranormal team investigating Greeter Hall” She turned and pointed the camera down the stairs “I have successfully come up the infamous Greeter Staircase, that was made infamous for being responsible for the deaths of more than a dozen people” She walked down the hallway in one direction and turned towards the other side when she reached the wall “I am to spend ten minutes alone in here asking the questions that you’ve heard and hoping to get an answer” She paused “Hopefully, a friendly answer” She added in. By the time her second bout of pacing was done her ten minutes were up and she turned back towards the stairs. A cold wind slammed her in the chest causing her to gasp and have to stand still for another minute to catch her breathing before heading to the top of the stairs again.
Lidia started down the stairs but stopped every few seconds to listen because she was so sure that someone had said her name. She tried to go down the stairs faster and yet remembered all the death that had happened on the stairs for possibly the same reasons she was facing now. She was about half-way down the steps when it sounded like someone was running down behind her, she didn’t look just made her steps quicker as she tried to get away. It was right behind her and then she felt a kicking pressure against her lower back and she was sailing through the air like a ragdoll. She waited for the inevitable bone breaking landing but it never came, there was a grunt and when she opened her terrified eyes she was looking right in to Remus’s surprised stare.
“I was pushed” She gasped “Something pushed me”
“We’ve all experienced something here” He assured her checking her over for cuts or bruises. He told her she was fine but took a picture of something on her back anyway, something he wouldn’t let her see.
“Now” Natasha’s eyes were wide with relief “We stick together for the rest of the night”
“What are you doing here anyway?” Lidia asked “Why aren’t you all finishing up your own investigations?”
“We’re done” Scorpius looked at her like she was mental “We’ve been looking for you”
“Oh my god” She sighed “Two minutes over the allotted ten minutes alone and you’re sending out the search party?” She laughed hollowly “Seems a little overprotective, don’t you think?”
“Ten minutes?” Natasha repeated.
“It hasn’t been only ten minutes, Liddy” Remus said.
“Fifteen then” She sighed rolling her eyes, her legs were killing her and her head was pounding.
“It was nine when we split up” Natasha told her.
“I know” Lidia snapped looking at her watch “And now it’s...” Her eyes widened “Not possible...”
“Now it’s midnight” Natasha finished for her.
“We’ve been looking for you for three hours” Remus told her.
“It was right up there” She pointed to the hallways she had just been in “Walking back and forth, I kept time and everything”
“I went up there” Remus said “We all did, we have been in every room, every closet, every nook and cranny has been searched and even the grounds...you were not here”
“I wanna go back now!” Lidia snapped hating herself for her fear.
“You can’t” Natasha said.
“The hell I can’t!” Lidia snapped at her “I will go to the gate unlock it and walk back to the college I don’t care, I don’t want to be here anymore!”
“Please!” Natasha begged her “Please, they’ll kick me out of the group...”
“Lidia” Remus said softly pulling her against him in a warm and protective hug. She felt safe with him like she always had in the past, this time it was different though she took a deep breath and nodded allowing him to lead her back to the living room. She looked over she shoulder and saw the wisp of something white flit up the stairs with a cold, bonechilling laugh.
