Chapter 4
Coming to with a start after being pounced on by something, Sirius tried to grab for his wand, but couldn't manage. It was then he heard the deep chuckle from Harry and groaned. Rubbing his eyes, he flopped onto his back and looked up to see Harry perched over him. “That's evil, you know that right? And not the way to start the day,” he sighed, but grinned slightly as he did. Shaking his head, knowing it was worthless to chastise Harry about doing that as he had done the exact same thing to him several times over the years, he admitted with a snort, “You got me.”
“I did,” Harry told him, grinning himself. “Couldn't resist, seeing you laying there all out of it.” Flopping down on his side, he slipped an arm over Sirius then leaned over and kissed him. “Good morning,” he said, still grinning.“That was not the way to start the day and there is nothing good about it,” Sirius shot back, though he kissed Harry. Pulling the younger man close, he held him there and rubbed his back. “You're an evil, sneaky shite, you know that?” He said, looking at Harry, grinning once more.“And I learned all of it from you,” Harry shot right back, chuckling.“Oh yes, I'm a bad influence and taught you plenty of stuff I'm now regretting,” Sirius snorted, shaking his head. Squinting at the windows and seeing the sunlight streaming in, not wanting to grab his wand to check, he asked, “What time is it anyway?”“Just a bit before noon,” Harry sighed.“What the hell are you doing up at this hour? I figured you'd still be asleep after that trip from Mexico,” Sirius asked, squinting at Harry. That trip—it took a hell of a lot out of both of them and he had been out cold for like twelve hours, if he figured it right. Harry normally would do the same, as that was a long jaunt.Laughing, Harry told him, “I was until about a half an hour ago. The only reason I woke before you was I had to do the loo thing. So, I figured if I was up, I might as well get the elves to start brekky and all that.”Rubbing a hand over his face, Sirius groaned then nodded. “Good. At least there will be food waiting for me after my shower.”“I even made sure that they prepared your coffee right,” Harry told him with a snort and a shake of his head.“Even better,” Sirius laughed. “Though I'm plenty awake after that pouncing!”“Be that as it may, you're still a bear without your coffee,” Harry said, rolling his eyes. “I don't fancy dealing with that.”“I admit to that,” Sirius chuckled, giving Harry a squeeze. Groaning, he said, “I better get up and moving then. We have a shiteload to take care of today, even if we don't have to leave here.” Glancing at Harry, he asked, “Any mail?”“A ton,” Harry admitted. “I've got most of it sorted into what we have to handle and what's just junk. So, it won't be so bad. We did get something from the solicitor and realtor, so those we need to look at it.”“We do,” Sirius sighed. “Let me get my arse into the shower to wake up more, then I'll meet you in the dining room.”“That's fine,” Harry said. Leaning over, he kissed him again then sat up. Scratching his stomach under his shirt, he slid out of bed and headed for the dining room and a nice cup of tea.Sitting up himself, Sirius watched Harry go, grinning just a bit. That was nice to watch and had been for some time now. Shaking his head, he reminded himself that they had a ton to do today, so he needed to get his arse in gear. With that in mind, he slid out of bed and headed towards the shower.
Leaning against the door jamb that led into the dining room where Harry was sitting cross-legged on a chair reading the paper, Sirius couldn't help but smile at what he saw. That little boy he had taken ten years ago almost to the day, in fact the anniversary of that was two days ago, something that was in the papers, had grown into a man that he loved with all his heart. Oh, he had loved Harry since he was a child, but this was different. Harry had grown into someone amazing. Gone was the little boy that put himself in danger to please the adults that were around him and be the good little minion. What took that child's place, was a man that was self confident, talented in many areas and would think things through rather than rush in. It had taken him time to undo all the damage done by the years of living with the Dursleys and what Albus had pulled, but he had managed. What Harry had become was so different that they almost weren't the same person.
That first summer on the run together had been rough. While in Moscow taking care of everything they needed and preparing, Sirius had realized just how bad Harry's life had been. Oh, his godson hadn't talked too much about it, but had answered him when questioned. What he heard infuriated Sirius then made him want to go back and start hexing people, but he didn't. Though he adored parts of Harry's personality, such as how easily pleased he was with the small things, his kindness and other bits, there were parts he set out to change. Harry would not be a sheep, that he vowed. So, he set about to change it and had succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Harry was strong, independent and self confident, a far cry from the abused and neglected boy that was ready to leave with him only an hour after they met. Perfect.During that summer in Moscow, they got the first hint of just what Albus was up to. While Harry was undergoing a form of Magical plastic surgery that would get rid of his scar, basically getting it cut out, the Horcrux was found. The Healer doing the surgery had come to him while Harry was still under and laid out options on how to destroy it. None of the choices Sirius was presented with were nice ones and made him ill. It couldn't remain in that scar, though, so he had chosen the safest route to remove it; a medically induced death. Harry would die for a minute or so while under and that would get rid of it. The Healer assured him that his godson would come back from it. Those minutes waiting to hear if Harry had come back were among the most agonizing he had ever lived through. It worked, though, perfectly. Harry wasn't harmed by it, the scar was gone and so was the Horcrux. That's when he began to cover with Harry all that had gone on once he got to school. And it all began to click. Albus must have known, thus allowing so much to go on. That had ended that summer because Sirius vowed that old man was not getting his claws into his godson. And he made damned sure of it.After Harry healed and everything they needed was in place, they left Moscow just ahead of winter then made their way to the very tip of Chile, just as he had said. Though it was odd there, a far cry from what both of them knew, they had managed. Settling in, they found they adored it. It was a place that was safe for them as questions weren't asked of strangers and gossip didn't happen. Where they were living was a refuge of sorts, from plenty around the world. That was good as it meant that, for the first time, he and Harry were safe. Of course, they hid who they were, taking on different names, but they were both allowed to heal from so much and work on fixing problems that were there. He would be the first to admit that he had plenty of issues dealing with the aftermath of Azkaban and the Dementors. Harry had his own problems because of so much. Together they healed and moved on, building a life together. Each year they had to slip back into the UK for a time. This was easier than when they left, of course, because they had proper paperwork under different names, Sirius just didn't like doing it as the risk of getting caught was high. However, it was required to take care of needed paperwork with Gringotts. Thankfully, he could set up meetings with the goblins elsewhere so he and Harry didn't have to go to Diagon Alley to do it. They would stay about a week in his hunting lodge. Though it had no name, Harry had dubbed it Pooh Manor because of the forest's relationship to the Muggle books about the stuffed bear. He hadn't understood that at first, but Harry had gotten him the books and he grinned when he thought about it now. The name had stuck and it was one he loved because of the innocence of the connotation. Those visits were also something that he adored, in a way, because they showed the growth in his godson. Each year, they had a picture of Harry taken wherever they were living and hung it on the wall so he could see how much he had grown and changed. Every time he looked at the pictures that lined the one parlor wall, he couldn't help but grin. It was easy to see Harry's confidence grow in them, not just how his looks changed. That he adored. Though he hated coming back to the UK for so many reasons, he adored looking at those pictures and thinking about what they represented.During those visits, at least up until shortly after Harry turned sixteen, he had met with Remus to supposedly check on the hunt for Harry. Those meetings were something he loathed, though he needed the information. Thankfully, no one was ever close to finding where the two of them were, even though they made sure to play a real life game of 'Where's Waldo', something Harry introduced him to after the first time they made a public appearance of Harry in India. He garnered plenty of information from Remus about Voldemort, Harry, Albus, the mess, all of it, during those talks that were him supposedly getting information about his godson. He filed it away with what they were garnering from other areas to put together. The conclusions they came to neither of them liked.Shortly after Harry turned sixteen many things changed. Peter was caught, finally. He never did hear just how, only that he was trying to pull something off to help Voldemort. Not only was the traitor Kissed, he was cleared. That helped, plenty. It meant he didn't have to worry about the looming sentence and could get rid of the disguises he had used for so long. Harry was the only one he worried about after that. He was easier, though, so it wasn't such a bother. After that, rather than show up, he wrote letters to Remus, refusing to come back to the UK, supposedly following Harry's trail all over the world in order to find his godson. From what they gathered, the consensus was that Harry was trying to find him. Most figured he was alive because of the sightings, thankfully. What they had done with that was a glamour that made Harry look younger and more like his old self. It worked as whenever a tourist from the UK or someone with connections to the country snapped a shot of Harry, it made it into the Prophet, sending more on the hunt. Of course, it was a set up on their end as they made sure to find people for Harry to 'bump into'. That helped as it threw everyone off.During what would have been Harry's last year at Hogwarts, right after he turned seventeen, plenty changed. The biggest was the UK metaphorically exploded as Voldemort made it clear he was back. Thus the war had started. That caused plenty of problems. Though he and Harry were out of it, taking an extended vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, they heard plenty through not only the papers, and not just the Prophet, but from Brits fleeing the UK and settling elsewhere until it was over. This time around it was worse than during the first war when it came to the violence of the evil git. He had more followers, mostly children of the Death Eaters from the first war. However, that was balanced out by the fact that he had an opposition, unlike the first war.Amelia Bones was Minister of Magic and she was the perfect war time Minister, doing all she could to take on the evil monster. Rufus was backing her up with everything he had. She had put plenty of people in place that would do the job right and not cower. Then she had kicked out or fired those that didn't want to toe her line. All that meant was they stood a fighting chance. From what he knew, Albus and the reformed Order were helping. From the letters Remus sent, he got the feeling that Albus wasn't helping as much as he could. His thought was the hunt for Harry, something Albus was focusing on, was what came first. That didn't make him happy. Harry agreed with his line of thinking to let the UK tear itself apart, they weren't going back. That year heralded another change; their relationship. He had known for years he was bisexual. In fact, there had been a relationship with Remus while in school. It had petered out in a year or so, but it had happened. Since then there had been a mix of birds and blokes. It was also something he freely admitted to Harry while they were getting to know each other. When Harry turned sixteen, that came into play on his end. His godson hit his growth spurt and became a handsome man. Oh, there was still a passing resemblance to James, especially when it came to the hair, and he still had his mother's eyes, but he became Harry. In that spurt, Harry outgrew his 5'9” and stopped at just a tad under 6'0”. Of course, like so many younger blokes, he was thin from it, not having put the weight on boys tended to after they hit their mid-twenties. He was—Harry—the only way to describe it was Sirius found him attractive in so many ways. Unlike what so many would have thought, he didn't see Harry as James. He was Harry. The eyes were usually hidden by color shifting contacts, so he didn't see Lily in them. He saw Harry. And Harry was amazing. He supposed the fact that the two of them were together so much and he hadn't really been a father figure, more of a best friend because of the years they spent apart when Harry was young, was what drove it. And it was mutual, he found out one night after Harry had drunk a bit more tequila than he usually did. So, their relationship started. And he never regretted it, ever. Harry was all he could ever wish for in a partner and they adored each other. It was perfect as far as he was concerned. After that, they pressed on with not only staying hidden, but growing the relationship. The world around them shifted, as it always does, while the UK fought against the evil arse that was trying to extend his reach beyond just the UK. He and Harry paid attention to the news, of course, and what Remus told him in letters, but didn't let it concern them much. At least until Harry hit twenty-one. It was then they started to worry. The war was going badly. It was at a stalemate as Amelia Bones wasn't going to let that arse win. That was good, of course. The bad was that the arse had managed to get followers in power in some of the smaller countries and they were trying to help spread his influence. As it went from bad to worse, a prophecy came to light about Harry having to end the war. That had Sirius irate, sure it factored into what Albus wanted all along, since it turned out that idiot that taught Divination at Hogwarts made it just before she was hired, probably what sent that evil git after James and Lily. Because it came to light, people were now clamoring to get Harry back and the hunt for him intensified on many fronts. That helped exactly nothing. They made sure that there were more Harry sightings in very different places across the globe, but they were trying to keep their heads down. Sirius was sure that they were going to have to face at least part of the fallout from that leaked prophecy at some point, but wanted to put it off as long as he could manage. The other big change was life altering for the two of them; they got married. The relationship, though many would frown on it, was something they wanted. So, after one of the closer to the UK Harry sightings, they slipped into the Netherlands and got married, adding in the standard bonding to it. Though that wouldn't be recognized in many countries yet, they did it for themselves and adored it. They were both of the opinion that they would never find someone else that would not only be able to handle their life and the travel, but understand each other the same way. It was perfect, as far as they were concerned, so they went with it and enjoyed it.Over the next few years, they watched from afar as Voldemort's reach extended to the continent while the UK fought him with everything they had. It was worrying as it looked like the evil arse might actually win and take the UK. There were plenty fighting him, but he was winning because of his tactics. Amelia Bones was gone, killed one night, but Rufus took over. He was very capable of doing what was needed and was trying. He just wasn't getting very far.It was during this time, the hunt for Harry intensified even more. Remus told him in a letter that even Rufus had people trying to locate him. That bothered both of them so they went back into hiding in obscure places, hoping to hold off anyone getting a hint where they might be. Harry made sure to disguise himself better and he went back to using them as well. They weren't really sure what to do, but didn't want dragged in.About six months ago everything changed. A letter from Remus almost begging him to come back showed up. His old friend explained that they were in dire straits. Voldemort had plenty in power on the continent and was still pressing on there. Though those in the UK were putting up the good fight, they were in trouble. His old friend reminded him, in a subtle way, that there were causes worth dying for and this was one of them. He also mentioned all the hell that he had gone through and, though he didn't come out and say it, danced around the topic of revenge for it. It was his thought that this was Remus' way of drawing him back. That was enough to tell him and Harry, both, that the UK was in real trouble. Remus also mentioned something about finding the keys to ending the evil arse. He didn't say what it was, but mentioned very dark magic and immortality. Both he and Harry immediately thought of the Horcrux. Though he felt ill that there might be more of those disgusting things out there, he wasn't sure what to do. It did sound like Remus was really calling for help as those fighting the battle were in trouble. The two of them had seen the list of deaths each day in various papers and knew that it was a case of some were trying. More, from what they read, were just cowering and hoping others took care of it. Which meant he and Harry had a hard choice to make. For a month or so, they talked it out, worrying over the subject each day to an extent, trying to figure out what to do. In the end, despite both of them feeling the pull to go back and help, decided that if the 'right' side were going to pull out the tactics they had with a child, they could fight their own battles. Remus, though a friend in school, was someone Sirius was completely irate with. Some of the legal papers they got for Harry when he became an adult showed that Remus was the one that was supposed to take Harry, but declined on Dumbledore’s request, thus sending him to the Dursleys. That had Sirius frothing at the mouth. He knew his old friend, quite well. One of the things he knew was that Remus was a follower. Not only that, but his old friend thought the sun shone out Albus' arse because of what he did to get him in school. Couple that with all the stupid shite the Ministry had pulled over the years and the denial over the signs, it finally came down to the two of them weren't going to step in. Which meant they had other things to plan for.Once the choice was made, they had to decide what to do. Sirius was sure that the hunt for Harry was going to end up with all stops pulled out, thus both of them being in danger. So, after much debate, the two of them decided it was time to go back to the UK and sell off everything they had but Pooh and Potter Manor. That was all they would keep. After that, they were going to Greece and hiding on one of the small islands there that was heavily protected. Greece, from what they could tell, was safe so far, with Voldemort not being able to get his hands into it. If it looked like he was, they would leave again. The house in Russia was still there. That's where they would go if they had to.The worst of this was he was damned sure that they would end up exposed as being back. They had to brave Diagon Alley to tend to parts of it as there was no way around it. When the house he had grown up in went up for sale, people would know he was around. Once he was exposed, Harry would be as well. That would cause huge problems and make them both a target. Then there was the fact it would come out, at some point, that Harry had left with him. Though the statute on kidnapping ran out long ago, he would have problems and the Ministry might try to force him to get Harry involved by pulling out every charge they could think of to try to force him to get Harry involved. It wouldn't work as nothing could stick because the statutes ran out, but he was damned sure they would try to leverage Harry into diving into the middle of it. Not good, any of it. However, they were going with it. For the most part, they were going to hide out here in Pooh Manor and only go to Muggle areas unless forced to by absolute necessity. The only exception might be that Harry wanted to see Hermione. He could understand that and they would try.On the other hand, though, there were plenty he wanted to talk to about this mess, Remus and Albus at the top of the list. He was sure he would get that pleasure before they left and relished the thought of what would come of it. Oh, they would be finding out just why he wanted no part of this nightmare, so would everyone else if he had his way.Shaking his head, he pushed off the jamb and went to join Harry. The coffee smelled good and he wanted it. Then they had to work out what they had to do that day and how to protect themselves the best they could. That would take some planning, that's for damned sure.
After eating and going through the mass of papers there, Sirius shook his head. Taking a bracing sip of coffee, he said, “Right. Here's what we're going to do—starting tomorrow, we'll go to the Alley and begin the paperwork to transfer the accounts to Switzerland. That should only take a week, even with the mess going on. Then we'll get with the realtor about selling everything. He can get the basics in place while we start hopping between the properties and making damned sure they're in good shape. The only one that's going to take time is Grimmauld Place, I think. Then we get with the solicitor to take on everything we need and prepare for the hell I'm sure is coming if someone figures out we're back. We both know that's probably going to happen. I want him prepared to have to get to the Ministry and start screaming about the kidnapping and any other bogus charge they can dream up, if someone takes me in. They'll try, we've both realized that, though it won't succeed as I'm in the clear, so I want him to make sure he has everything in place if they do. Also, for him to make damned sure there isn't a fucking thing they can do to make you talk. We're married and bonded, with you having taken the last name Black. As that was done when you were a legal adult, you can't give up shite. I want him to go tattoo that on their foreheads if he has to. We also have the plan in place to get you out of here if someone snags me so they can't get their hands on you, as we know that's what they want and will try with whatever they dream up to lay on me. Keep the Portkey on you at all times. If you can't, call the elf, like we discussed. The elves know to get you the hell out of there.”
“Understood and we'll go with that,” Harry nodded. “We'll defend ourselves if we have to, like we’ve talked about, but vanishing is the better option.”“Exactly,” Sirius told him. “I don't like the idea, obviously, neither do you, but it's going to save a shiteload of hassle if we go about it that way. We just need to keep that in mind. I'm estimating we have two months of crap to take care of to get it all in place before we can hightail it out of this nightmare. Once we're out, we aren't coming back until this is settled, I don't give a shite. If we have to, we'll go the route of getting Russian citizenship. No shot in hell anyone can get us out of that country for any reason.”“I'd rather go Greek when it comes to citizenship, but Russian might be the best option,” Harry sighed, sipping his tea. “We don't know which way the wind is going to blow with this nightmare. France is in trouble, we know that. They're doing all they can, but if they fall to Voldemort, the Greeks don't stand a chance, despite their history. I don't want in the position or end up with that evil arse being in power then asking for our extradition. They would have to honor that. Not something either of us want.” Looking around at the mass of papers all over, he said, “Why not get the papers started for citizenship so we have them if we need them? That will save a huge hassle if we need to go that route. Your family had enough ties to that country that we can manage it.”Thinking it over for a minute or so, Sirius then nodded and made a note on a sheet of parchment to get with their solicitor about that. “We'll at least start them. It can only help if it comes down to that. You're right about the Greeks. We don't want to chance that. France—they're gone, if you ask me. Unless they can get some real help, like from the Americans or Russians, they're done for and that arse will have one of his puppets in charge in a month or so. If France goes, plenty of other countries will follow. Short of a full out world war among our kind, nothing will stop him.” Sighing, Sirius admitted, “We also need to consider that most countries wouldn't have a problem sacrificing you if they thought it would save them from him taking over. It wouldn't, but they would try. So, we have to go where we're most protected. That means we get the fuck out of Europe if we have to and stay away. I'd like to stick close to keep up on the news, but we won't chance it if it looks bad.”“Russia isn't my first choice for being a citizen, but we can handle it. We can summer there and go like to Thailand or Australia in the winter months. That would be nice enough,” Harry told him. They had been to both places and they were nice, so that wasn't a huge hardship.“We'll find a way to be comfortable and have fun, just like we always have,” Sirius said, patting Harry on the back. Changing topics, he said, “Just remember that we are not going among our kind unless it's a necessity, so get lists of whatever Magical you need to the elves. Everything else we're doing among Muggles. Not a big thing, as we've done that before, we'll just have to pay attention. Even among them we will and will have to stay alert. This is not nice and worse than some of the small conflicts we ended up in the middle of when it came to South America. If it looks odd, we get the hell out and come here until it blows over.”“No problem from me on that. Anything wonky and I'm out, taking you with me,” Harry told him with a chuckle.“I'm not sure about seeing Hermione,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “I get why you want to, but we'll have to see on that. Let's gauge what's going on before we try.”“That's fine,” Harry nodded, understanding why that was. “I think it's best to try just before we leave anyway, if something doesn't happen first. We'll see what presents itself before then.”“We'll see. From what we know, she's attached to the Order now and helping. I'm sure she'd keep it a secret, what with how long she's kept the other one, but we do not want to chance Albus knowing you’re around any more than we do the other side of this mess. That—you'd end up in the middle, as would I, before we could say butterbeer. No shot in hell.” Sirius sighed, shaking his head.“Again, no arguments from me,” Harry told him. Leaning back, he looked around at the mass of stuff they had to work with and asked, folding his arms over his chest and stretching out his long legs “What are we doing today? Filling this crap out?”“Oh, yes,” Sirius told him with a mirthless chuckle, shaking his head. “And it's going to take all damned day, too. Even with both of us working on it. So, we need to get started as we have to be in the Alley first thing in the morning with some of this mess so we can start what we need to. So, we need to get on it. Let's see what we can get done before we think of tackling anything else. If we can get most of this knocked out, I want to start hopping to some of the properties, locking them further down and getting the elves started on what they need to do. The faster we get that done, the faster we can get them up for sale. Though putting some of them on the market is going to be a bright and shining signal we're around, I'll bet they'll sell quickly with the protections on them. That's good for us.”“Let's get to it, then. If we get done around nightfall, we can take a walk in the forest. That should be safe,” Harry told him with a smile. It was something he loved to do as it was peaceful and calm, and seemed to relax him.Grinning a bit himself, loving the memories of the times they did that when they were here, Sirius nodded, “We will. If we have to, we'll make time to do that.” Clapping Harry on the back, he shoved some of what his husband had to take on over to him then tackled his own small mountain of it. It was mind numbing shite, but he wanted it done so they could press on.
