Chapter 4
Backing slowly out of the bathroom, wand trained on the sink, Harry kept a close eye out for the creature that had just about given him a heart attack. Having something staring at you from in the sink when you were still mostly asleep and washing up first thing in the morning was not the way to start the day, that's for sure, though it made sure you were plenty awake.
Seeing what Harry was doing, Sirius' brow furrowed. Still buttoning his shirt up, he asked, “What's wrong? Anything we need to worry about?” Finishing the buttons, not bothering with his robe, he snagged his wand then walked over to Harry, wondering what was going on.“Uh—something was staring at me from in the sink when I was washing my face,” Harry told him, looking around for the creature. He assumed he scared whatever it was as much as it did him, but you never knew.Face taking on a somber look, Sirius inched closer then asked, “What was it, do you know? And where did it go? Or didn't you see that?” Glancing up as the door opened, seeing Severus come in, he focused back on the bathroom, moving closer.“No clue what it was,” Harry told him honestly. “It looked like a bigger version of a pygmy puff, though it was a vomit green in color and had an actual face with red eyes. It stared at me and I stared at it, then it scuttled down the drain with what sounded like a panicked squeaky noise.” Shaking his head, he said, “Not real sure what to make of it as it seemed as startled as I was.”Listening in, Severus stepped next to Harry then put a hand on his shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “I doubt its anything to worry about. It sounds like it was a Sewerskein. They're related to the Puffskeins, though they have teeth and can spit acid if attacked. It was probably just as unnerved by seeing you as you were from seeing it. Nothing to be too concerned about.”After checking out the bathroom for any more pests, Sirius then plugged the sink and tub so that nothing else could crawl out before they returned. “I think this means that we need to make pest control our top priority, Severus. Let the elves take on the cleaning until we get that done. From what we saw last night, there are probably plenty of places they can hide.”“We'll put that on the top of our list,” Severus agreed. “We also need to check outside. That'll be daunting. Buckbeak can handle the normal ones as they'll be a food source for him, but there’ll be others we need to take on.”“I say we start on that after brekky. We'll begin on this floor with the cleaning, but do a walkthrough of the other three floors to make a running list of what is where. If they are of the seriously dangerous kind, we need to tend to those fast as they won't stay wherever and will find us,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head.“Good plan,” Severus nodded, pleased that Sirius was on the same page with him and had a logical way to go about dealing with the issue. “We can also send one of the elves to check the rooms before we do and report major problems, like if they aren't safe in other ways. I'll have them do that while we eat.”“We do sort of need to see where everything is, honestly. That way we don't get surprised by paintings that we might not know about which could give away whatever,” Harry said, slipping his wand up his sleeve. “Do you know the history of the house? Like if it was Muggle or Magical?”“Not all of it, no, but at least the last few owners were Magical, from what I can tell, as it was hidden from Muggles,” Severus said, shaking his head. “We'll check what we can after we eat. Then we can devise a plan of attack. I doubt there is anything here that Sirius and I can't handle, but you never know. If there is something, we'll have to find a way as we can't call in the normal services to deal with it.”Putting a hand on Harry's lower back, Sirius said, “Let's get something to eat so we can focus. Then we have to figure out the most pressing matters we have to handle. There's a lot, I'm sure.”“There is,” Severus confirmed with a nod, motioning for the two to follow him, leading them to the kitchen. “Plenty, and not all of them dealing with the house either.”“I figured,” Sirius sighed, trailing along with Harry. “All we have to remember is that the worst is over. We're out. That was the big one. Everything else? We'll manage.”“We will,” Harry agreed with a small grin. “It's just the start of a new adventure, nothing more.”“I believe that's the way to look at it,” Severus told them both with a smirk. It wasn't what he envisioned when the whole relationship with the two started, but it wasn't something he was unhappy with either. They just were going about it differently, nothing more. That he could handle.
Shoving his plate aside after eating, Sirius sipped his tea then said, looking between Severus and Harry, “Aside from cleaning, I think the biggest bit we need to worry about is your Dark Mark, Severus. That and making damned sure that no one can trace us. I'm certain the latter is something we really need to concern ourselves with as plenty are probably in a right panic over what we did. Remus can give us a heads up on the Albus end, but we have no way of knowing who else might do what. The wards, I assume, will protect us from most, but we need to figure out what else to put in place.”
Nodding as he swallowed the last bite of his food, Severus told him, “I have the standard wards in place to deflect most. Plus a few more I know that I made sure went up as well. That should protect us for now. Once we get some of the other areas tended to, we'll beef up what we can. Lupin can probably help us find spells to ward off detection. For now, I'm not too worried about it, honestly.”Sobering up, Severus then sighed, “I am concerned about the Dark Mark. I don't know what it can do when it comes to tracing, if it can. From what I know, the Dark Lord can't do that. If he could, he would have gone after a few he considers traitors right away, like Karkaroff. That he didn't do and had to trace them the normal way. In this case, I want to make damned sure. We do not need the Dark Lord finding us. Whatever protections we have up won't hold him off.”“Any idea how we can go about getting rid of it?” Harry asked, shoving his plate away after finishing. “So far you've not found anything. If it were a normal tattoo, we could go about it the Muggle way as they have figured out how to get rid of them.”“I've pondered the Muggle way, actually,” Severus admitted. “More than once. I don't think it would work, though. Looking into it, I've found nothing. The only two things that might work are burning it off, something we could do the Muggle way with the laser treatments they have, but we would have to do more than that once they finish because the connection is Magical. That would take months and many treatments, though. So, it's not something I think we should consider. The other was cutting it out. Again, I'm not sure if it would work.”“And neither are things we could do, Severus,” Sirius told him softly, shaking his head. “Harry and I—no chance. We couldn't do that to you, no matter what we would need it for. The mere idea makes me queasy.”“Same here,” Harry said with a shudder and a grimace. “There has to be a way.”“There does and we'll find it,” Severus assured them. Settling back and crossing his arms over his chest, he said, “While it's a problem, it's not one we're going to worry about right this second. It can take a backseat to other bits. I'm not sure all we're going to need when it comes to help once we start cleaning and other bits around here. We can get help from Lupin, of course, and may have to. What we don't want to do is use that excessively as the more we do, the bigger the chance of discovery. So, we're mostly on our own and will do plenty the Muggle way. We're close to a large-ish town, so we'll do that.” Snorting and smirking, he said, “And one of the things I want to procure is a Muggle car. Not one that will stand out, but a normal one. I have a driver's license and have kept it renewed, so I can manage. Then I'm giving you both lessons on how to drive, something that should be most amusing.”Snorting at that and grinning, Sirius said, “We can do that. I already know how to drive a motorcycle, so this shouldn't be that hard. We'll see.”“Oh, this won't end well, Severus,” Harry laughed, shaking his head. “The three of us in a car with you trying to teach us to drive? You'll end up losing your temper with us again.”Knowing what it was like with the two seated at the table, especially when it came to teaching them something and their propensity for goofing around, he snorted. “We'll manage and I'll keep my temper under control. Provided you two don't go out of your way to annoy me,” he told them dryly.Sobering up, Severus sighed then told them, “Until then, we need to work on this house. Making it safe is the top priority. Harry's encounter with the Sewerskein tells me we need to get on pest control, today. I've been in some of the rooms, but not all. Most of where I ventured was down on this floor with a couple glances at the second. The third and fourth I've not looked at. For now, we'll focus there unless Lupin gives us something that we need to worry about or other parts present themselves.” Looking at Harry, who was relaxing and leaning against Sirius, he added, “Stick close to one of us unless we tell you that you can venture elsewhere. As we have no idea what's around and you've not had a proper education on how to handle some of these pests, we don't want you in danger. This isn't like school where we can send you to the infirmary.”“I will, don't worry. No wandering and investigating until we're sure it's all safe.” Harry assured him, planning to do just that.Seeing that the two were both done with their breakfast, Severus decided it was time to get on it. Sighing, he told them, “Grab something to write on and let's get to this. We'll start with the walkthrough then decide what we're doing from there.” After seeing them nod, he stood with a groan, giving himself a mental reminder to keep on his toes for whatever they might pull.
Holding his wand tightly, Harry stepped into the smallish room by the ballroom, keeping a wary eye out for anything troublesome. They had covered the house so far except this floor. Sirius and Severus were handling a couple of pests in the ballroom and told him to check out this one. As he could shield himself well, they figured he'd be fine. Up here there weren't many places to hide when it came to the pests, so it wasn't like what the other floors had been. Already they knew they were going to spend the next couple of days tending to the other floors as they found plenty of nasty things they had to take care of. That would keep them occupied, something good.
Looking around, his eyes widened at the paintings that lined the walls. It appeared this room was like it was a small gallery of some kind. The strange thing was he thought he recognized a few of them as they were in his Muggle history books. Inching further into the room, he gazed at the names on the paintings that were now twittering madly. Some of them moved like magical ones, of course, but others were Muggle paintings. Those—he recognized their names! They were part of the royal family and aristocracy from long past. Wow!Not sure what to do as the paintings were talking to him, he just gazed around, eyes wider at some of the names on the bottoms. Even the Magical ones—he knew some of these! Not sure what to make of this, he shouted for Sirius and Severus, though made sure to tell them it wasn't an emergency. If this was real, it was astonishing. Shaking his head, he didn't know what to do. That was until a deep voice was heard.Head whipping around in that direction when he heard someone say “Hello, young man,” Harry stammered when he saw a ghost standing against the far end of the gallery against the wall. Eyes wide, Harry wasn't sure what to say. It was a man dressed in the finery from centuries past. “Hello,” he finally stuttered out.Doffing his hat, the ghost bowed deeply then said, “Welcome to Sanctuary Manor, young man. I'm Sir Edward Pendragon, the person that had it built. I take it you're one of the new owners? The other ghosts mentioned seeing three men in the house checking for pests. And, from your wands, that you're wizards as well. This is good. We need no more Muggles residing in the place. No, too much to hide from them!”“Uh—yes, we are,” Harry stammered out after shouting for Severus and Sirius again. “We moved in last night.”Chuckling, the ghost replaced his hat and floated closer to the young wizard, who appeared on edge. “Nothing to fear, I assure you. It's been many a year since we've had people in the house. We'll adore it, providing you're not up to something horrible or evil.”Backing up, though he knew ghosts like this wouldn't and couldn't hurt him, Harry told him, “No, nothing like that. We're going to live here.” Then he was relieved to see Severus and Sirius show up beside him.“Ah, the other two,” Sir Edward said, pleased. Once more bowing and introducing himself, he said, “Welcome!”Chuckling, Sirius grinned after saying hello to Sir Edward then told the other two, “We have our own ghost. This is great.”“More than one, my dear man,” Sir Edward told him with a chuckle. “The others are a tad shy, so give them time to reveal themselves.”Nodding to the ghost, Severus looked around at the paintings warily, knowing they had to check them out. Feeling a nudge from Harry, he looked at the youngest of them.“Look at the names on some of the paintings, Severus. Even I remember them from history class. And they are Magical, well some of the paintings,” Harry told him as Sirius was asking the ghost about the house. After a nod to let Harry know he heard him, Severus took a few cautious steps forward then gazed at the names. As he did, his eyes widened. “Astonishing!” He muttered as he, too, recognized them. “How is it these paintings are here and not in castles or the Ministry?” Severus asked Sir Edward. Catherine Parr and Jane Seymour were the ones that stood out. Seeing both paintings eying him critically, as though they were sizing him up, Severus gave a respectful nod to both.Floating next to the man looking at the paintings, Sir Edward chuckled, “Because the Muggles would not have taken it well, my good man. If you know anything about what Henry was like, you would understand. These were the two that were saved from his loutishness. No sense in stirring the pot, as they say. As for the Ministry—bah! No, they didn't want to be there because it would have set them off. They don't like the gawking that would come from that. It was something they wanted kept private, so they are here where their last secret was kept safe.” When the gentleman stepped back, he asked, “Now, if I may—what are your names? As we're all here, we might as well call each other by our first names, shouldn't we? Just call me Eddie.” Then he waited for the introductions.Figuring there was no harm, Severus quickly introduced the three of them then said, cautiously, eying the paintings once more, “The paintings—we're worried about where others may be located in our world. We would prefer our presence stay a secret from most.”“Never fear, Severus,” Eddie told him with a wave of his hand. “Sanctuary Manor keeps the secrets of its owners. The paintings won't utter a peep to anyone outside the house. There are only two located outside the house and they are in castles elsewhere, hidden, as they are overrun with Muggles in this time. Nothing at all to fear. Since I built the house, I've made certain that its occupants are granted the sanctuary they needed with their secrets, and very presence, kept within its walls. We'll do the same for yours.”“Good,” Severus told him with a sigh of relief.“You are hiding out then?” Eddie asked, gazing at the three. “We don't hear much here, obviously, but there is one that likes to go out and listen to the news. From what he's said, our world is on the brink of war once more. There is another that comes by to visit, when she isn't busy terrorizing Muggles, that is. Even she has said that there is much strife.”“We are,” Sirius told him with a sigh and shake of his head. He wasn't sure how much more to say, honestly, as this wasn't 'someone' they knew well yet. “It's complicated,” he finally added, going no further.“You will be safe here,” Eddie assured all three of them. “The wards I set up long ago activate when people that need to stay safe move in. That was part of the purpose for me building the home. Nothing to worry about, my good men.” Clasping his hands in front of him, Eddie said, “Now, what is it that you're attempting? Perhaps I can help. While I do that, we can get to know one another. There are plenty of mysteries and secrets in Sanctuary Manor, all of which you'll enjoy discovering. Anything else or any questions, you call for me and I'll assist all I can.”“At the moment, our biggest issue is pest control,” Severus told him with a sigh. He wasn't sure how much to reveal yet, but that was harmless enough. “We've found plenty we need to tend to so we're safe. If you could, though—a floor plan for the house would be most useful so we know what we're doing and where we can plan for certain things, such as a bedroom.”“Pest control I'm not able to help with,” Eddie chuckled, shaking his head. “The floor plans I can assist with. They are in the library. If you'll follow me, I'll point you to where they are.” Then he floated out, beckoning the three to follow, talking as he did.Trailing along, feeling Sirius have a hand on one shoulder and Severus with one on the other, Harry said, grinning, “This should be great. We have our own ghosts.”“We do,” Severus admitted with a smirk. Sobering up, he added, “If the wards he talked about are real, they can only help us. That we desperately need.”“This is going to be great!” Sirius laughed. “So much fun! Secrets—oh yes, we'll love finding those.”Severus, too, was intrigued by the secrets that Eddie mentioned, wondering what they could be. From the names of those paintings, he was sure that he would enjoy plenty of them.
Sitting around the kitchen table, glancing between the floor plans and notes they had taken, Sirius asked Severus, as he ate, “How do you want to go about this? I say we get the master suite done first and clear the path to down here. With that finished and the rooms down here, we should have plenty of space until we can get the rest completed. From what we saw, the master suite of rooms didn't have many pests. Those we can tackle today. Then the elves can get on the rooms. That should provide plenty of space so we don't go slightly mental from the cramped rooms down here.”
Looking over his own set of notes, Severus rubbed his chin then gave a slow nod. “We'll do that. I want to check out the basement before then, just to see what we have to tackle there. It's the part that can wait until last. The same with the top floor. I don't envision needing the ballroom for anything. Though I do like the painting gallery as it'll be most interesting to talk to the ones that are there.”“I don't know. I think we can do something plenty fun with the ballroom,” Sirius grinned, nudging Harry, who started chuckling. “Icing it over so we can skate in there comes to mind. Plenty of other bits as well.”Groaning and fighting the urge to roll his eyes at some of the deranged ideas Sirius could come up with for 'fun', Severus then shook his head. In an exasperated voice, he said, “Be that as it may, Black, it can wait until last. We'll have plenty to keep us occupied for the time being.” Before Sirius could argue that, Severus told Harry, “While we start, I want you to go take more detailed notes on what we found. Just avoid the rooms we talked about. And take Eddie with you.” That was something they negotiated with the ghost; keeping an eye on Harry so there weren't issues while they were busy with some of the more dangerous pests that they didn't want Harry helping with, as he had no foundation for eliminating them.“I will,” Harry agreed willingly, happy to do so. “I'll make sure I keep a running map of what is where and the other bits we mentioned, like repairs needed.”“Do that as it'll be a huge help,” Sirius told him. “Just make sure to listen to Eddie when he says to stay away from something. He knows better than us what's dangerous.”“We'll spend the afternoon tending to this,” Severus said, pleased with the surprise and the help it would give them. “While we work, the elves can continue with where we're staying and other things they still have to attend to. That will end up an immeasurable help to all of us.”“All right, I say we start in the master suite of rooms and work our way down. The rooms will take the longest. The hallways we can easily do and put up wards on doors and shite we've not gotten to yet. The same with putting wards around things like tapestries, suits of armor and such.”“That's a good plan and we'll do it that way. Harry, when you move between floors, let us know so we can keep a little track if you need us,” Severus said, hoping that would help.“Will do,” Harry nodded, listening in as Severus pressed on with how he wanted to do this.
“We have new owners, of the magical kind again,” Eddie told the other four ghosts gathered around him. Smiling happily, he added, “They are hiding out, from what I can deduce. That's good for us and means that we can do our jobs once more.”
“The house knows what to do?” The lady that they all referred to as the Librarian asked.“It does,” Eddie told her proudly. “We've already had words and it promises to do what's needed to help. The wards are fully active for the first time since the Muggle Second Great War. They'll protect our three men to the utmost.”“Do we know what they are hiding from or is it just the conflict going on in our world?” The one known as the Blue Lady asked.“I don't know yet, though I assume the conflict is part of the reason. It probably isn't all of it, of course, but it has to factor in,” Eddie sighed, shaking his head.“What is the relationship between the three, do you know yet? The one is quite a lot younger than the other two.” the ghost known as Red said, brow furrowed.“That I don't,” Eddie admitted. “I'll be spending time with the lad today, so I'll see what I can find out. Trust is needed, something I'll start to build while we talk, before they give up some of it. Give me time.”“We do need that if we want to help protect them,” Red pointed out. “As quickly as we can manage, we need them to understand that we won’t harm them. That and to have some idea of what we're facing.”“Let me do what I can. We just don't want to overwhelm them as they have plenty to attend to and I'm sure, with the state of the house, they had to leave wherever quickly. I'll do what I can.” Sighing, he looked at the ghost known as the Mad Monk and said, “If you could; go tell the other that visits we have new occupants and none of her usual stunts, please? We don't want to frighten them with some of what she normally does for a laugh.”“I will,” the wild looking man said, voice thick with his heavy Russian accent. “I'll tend to it when we're done so she doesn't take it in her head to show up and frighten them.”Clasping his hands in front of him, Eddie said, “We need to find out just what's happening outside this house to judge what we need to do to protect our new lads. So, if we can manage, some forays out would be helpful. That or get in touch with your contacts. One of the two. Once we know, we'll make plans.” Seeing nods, Eddie began assigning tasks then planned to go stick with Harry as promised. This was wonderful, though, and he felt useful once more. That was something he adored.
