Chapter 3
After stepping into Grimmauld Place, Harry gave an approving nod. “This is like—not even the same place! Even that disgusting feeling it had the last time we were here is gone.” Walking a bit further, he kept looking around and grinned. “Much better. Much, much better!”
Hearing Remus echo Harry's sentiments, Sirius put one hand on each of their shoulders as they looked around then said, “The elves did well. It's not all done, mind you, but the main parts we need are finished. The second and third floors are still something they're working on, but I'm not worried about those as we haven't decided what to do with them yet. The rooftop garden is on, the same with the skylights in our room. The swimming pool is complete. All the appliances are changed out and working. So, we're good. At least to move in. I think, maybe, we have some pests to get rid of on the floors the elves are still working on, but we've taken care of the others, though I'm sure some will still crop up with as long as this place was empty.”Starting to walk through the lower floor then going into the kitchen, Remus gave an approving nod. “This is wonderful, Sirius. They did a magnificent job. About the wards—what are we doing? I know that it's as protected as we can get when it comes to so much, but we discussed a Fidelius. Are we doing that or not?”“We are,” Sirius told him. “You know how and I'm having you do that after we're done with the walkthrough. I want this place as locked down as we can get it. That will only protect all of us better. With the nightmare going on and what we think is coming with Albus, I want something up that won't let anyone in. With only the three of us, so far, allowed in, it's for the best. That way no one can pull anything foolish.”“I'll tend to it, easily,” Remus assured him. Smiling when he saw that Harry had his phone out and was taking videos of the place, he asked, “Do we have everything set up that we need? Like grocery delivery?”“Up and ready,” Sirius assured him. “The first delivery of groceries has already arrived. We'll all sit down tonight and go over what we want then send out the list for the next one. You got the Wolfsbane started. That takes time, we get that, but it's at least going. The elves have a small laundry room set up off the kitchen, so we don't have to worry about sending that out like so many do. Other than the two floors I mentioned, I believe all we have left to do is tend to the bit with the Fidelius and go around to make sure everything is decorated to our tastes and how we want it arranged. I'm sure there's going to be some changes, of course. On the upside—as soon as we're done with the walkthrough, the elves can get our stuff moved over here. I've got one assigned to normal cleaning. The rest will tackle what I mentioned until that's done. So, we're ready to move in here. That should be nice.”Lowering his phone, Harry asked, “As we're in London, as long as we stay away from the Magical areas, we can go out without a problem, can't we? I get it'll be among the Muggles, but it's better than staying cooped up.”“We can,” Sirius nodded, checking once more that everything was functioning as it should. “For now, we won't have to watch out for much, but just stay wary. Once it's known that we're back, we'll have more problems. London is big enough that we shouldn't have too much of an issue. We'll see.”Motioning them to follow, Sirius headed towards the basement to start there with the tour. He was pleased with all the elves had done working on this. Though the pool and such were in the basement, the ceiling was charmed to look like a nice bright sunny day and have the feel of a beach. It wasn't the same as outside, of course, but it would make it less foreboding and dank. Then he was going to take them to the top floor so they could look around. While he hadn't thought that he could take living here, with the memories involved, he thought he might be able to handle it as the elves had made sure everything was changed to the point that it didn't seem like the same place he had grown up in. That was great and something he liked. If they were going to be forced to live in this Purgatory for a couple of years, they might as well have somewhere that was suited to all their tastes. As he walked, he said, “We are going to have one chore to tend to when we get time. The elves saved back anything they found that seemed questionable or that we might need to destroy personally. They can take on most tainted objects, but some it's best we tend to because of what might be on it. From what the one I put in charge said, there are a few of those.”“Easily tended to,” Remus assured him, assuming there were bits and bobs they would have to take on themselves. “We'll set aside some time to take it on once they get the whole house cleaned out of them so we can do it in one fell swoop.”“Good idea. We still have plenty to deal with, so we'll add that to the list. We do need to sit down tonight and make a list of what we need to take care of yet so we aren't left scrambling,” Sirius suggested, grinning as he walked down the stairs and saw the pool area. Perfect, just perfect! It even had sand around it to simulate a beach. Harry was going to love this!
Sliding back into his painting in the Headmasters office, Phineas' brow was furrowed. Clearing his throat then saying Albus' name, he waited for the man to stop what he was doing and look at him. When he did, Phineas said, “There is something odd happening that I think you should know about, Albus. I'm sure it might relate to something that can only help you.”
Leaning back in his chair with a tired groan, Albus took a drink of his sweet tea then popped a lemon sherbert in his mouth before asking, “What is that?” Phineas didn't have a painting anywhere that could really assist them, so he was curious.“As you know, my other painting is in Grimmauld Place. That's been shut since shortly after Sirius went to Azkaban.” Seeing Albus look curious, but motioning for him to go on, he said, “Someone just removed my painting from there and destroyed it. From what I could tell, it was elves. I'm not sure if Grimmauld Place was sold and someone is redoing it or if it's at Sirius' behest. It's something you may want to check into, Albus. If it is Sirius, it can only help with the war.”Twiddling his thumbs, Albus stared at the painting, mind working. “Are you sure it's gone? And that it was elves? Could it have been the one that was in that house for so long and he's gone 'round the twist?”“I'm sure, Albus,” Phineas nodded. “It wasn't Kreacher either. It was a different elf. I haven't seen Kreacher there in a couple of years now. I assure you, whatever elf it was that took that painting down and destroyed it wasn't one I have seen before.”Humming softly to himself for a few moments, Albus gave a slow nod. “I'll look into it. Well—at least as much as I can. I don't think I can get into that house, but I may be able to have a few others look into what might be going on. Thank you, Phineas. That was most helpful.” Already his mind was working on what this might mean. Remus, he thought, was with Sirius and they were trying to find Harry. At least that was his thinking on the matter. Nothing had been heard from either of them for a time, so he wasn't sure. It was his hope that if they were back, they would not only be able to help with the nightmare that was going on, but might have a line on where Harry was. If that was the case, it could only help, immeasurably. He would most assuredly assign people to help them if that was the case.
Chuckling as Harry was emailing videos of the house to his girlfriends, Sirius then looked at the running list of what they had to take care of, sorting it and moving bits into columns so it would make it easier on all of them. At the moment, they were in the kitchen having a snack after going through the house, so this was a good time to get on it.
After a couple minutes of sorting he said, “Right, let's start with the worst first. Our solicitor has the appointment set up with Arthur on Monday. He did it in Remus' name, though he did make sure Arthur knows that someone else will be there. That gives us three more days to get everything around here in shape and running like it should. That should be more than enough time.”“Good,” Remus nodded. “That's an excellent way to go about it as Arthur isn't bound to think too much is off if I need to see him. I'm sure he'll wonder what it's about as it's an official meeting, but he won't suspect the rest. What else have you got?”“Our solicitor is also ready to go at a moment's notice if the Ministry thinks it can lay anything on us when it comes to Harry vanishing. He doesn't think they'll try as no one knows why Harry vanished or what happened, but he's ready for anything. What he said is that the statute ran out on any charges they might try to file a couple of years ago. So, we don't have to worry about much there. From what he says, he doubts the Ministry is going to try as they have a lot bigger problems to worry about.”“They can't do crap unless I tell them what happened,” Harry chimed in, looking up from his phone. Shaking his head, he snorted, “And I'm not telling them anything. They can go with whatever theory they have on it. I'm a legal adult and bonded to both of you, so there is nothing they can do to get it out of me.”“Exactly,” Sirius told him with a nod.Pressing on, he said, “One of the things we have to do, once it's revealed we're back, is get Harry his Apparation license. He has one from the States, but needs to get one here. Not a big deal, as he just has to sign the forms, but we want everything on the up and up so no one can pull anything wonky. Then I need to register my Animagus form. Again, for the same reason as the Apparation bit. The bonding is filed and in place. We have what we need for the phones, as we got them in the States and can prove what we need. Our solicitor made sure the taxes are all paid up and have been kept current since I was cleared. Harry's were taken care of as well. Again, more so no one can pull any of us in on some stupid arse trumped up charge over anything. That should be it when it comes to what we have to do with the Ministry until I start setting up the business. Plato's solicitors are going to take on what is needed with that bit as they know it better than we do. That means we press on to what we have to deal with when it comes to setting up housekeeping here.”Sighing, Sirius looked at the second column on the list. “Remus, I'm putting you in charge of everything when it comes to the house, such as decorating, handling getting what we need and all that. You've taken care of this for years, so I'm letting you have at it.”“Something I can easily take on,” Remus said with a smile. Since he wouldn't be helping Sirius with the business venture on the public side because of what he was and the stigma still attached to it, this was something that made him feel quite useful. Besides, if he left it up to Sirius and Harry, chaos would reign as they tended to get strange about how they went about some bits. That made him mental. “I'll go out tomorrow to get a feel for where everything is around here when it comes to what we need. Then get with the two of you about anything else we need to handle in the house. One day this week I'll venture into the Alley to set up a couple other bits and grab some things we need. We also need to make sure we have a list of everything we need to order still. And I need the two of you to make up a list of food you can't live without so I know to get it in either Muggle areas, if it's from them, or do a standing order.”“I'll do up mine tonight,” Harry assured him, sitting his phone down when he finished the emails. “It's not much, but coffee is at the top of the list. Don't get me wrong, the British version is alright, but I like the stuff from the States and miss my cappuccino already.”“I'll handle it,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. It was one of Harry's indulgences and they had no issue with it, like they didn't with Sirius' propensity for spicy foods. “I'll also check around to see what the Muggles might have close by. Coffee shops are becoming quite popular all over, so you might be able to get the Muggle version until I can get everything in from the States.”“This is why I want you to take it on,” Sirius chuckled. “You know what the hell you're doing.”“Just to be clear here,” Remus said, holding out a hand and looking between the two, “I'm cooking. No elves doing it. It's something I enjoy and would rather take it on.” It was, too. The elves would be magnificent at it, of course, as that was part of their standard duties, but it was something he wanted to do, just like he had done since they left. Besides, it was another of those bits that made him feel useful. The only exception, as always, was around the full moon. Then he would let the elves have at it, something he was sure Sirius was planning on.“No one beats your cooking, so I agree there,” Harry grinned at him.“Already told them that,” Sirius assured him, reaching over to give him a pat on the back. “There was some ear pulling over it, but they understood.” Highlighting that column on the list, Sirius then sighed and pressed on, tone weary, “The rest of this—it's what we need to worry about, honestly. Remus, until it's revealed that Harry and I are back, you can go it alone. After that—even in Muggle sections we need to all three of us to go tend to whatever.” Looking at Harry, he added, “No going alone, Harry. I mean it. I get you're used to doing whatever and going out by yourself, but you can't do that here.” This was a discussion that they had before they came back, but he wanted to make sure Harry understood.Groaning and running his fingers through his hair, Harry sighed, “Got it. I know. Don't worry, I won't. I hate this, obviously, but I know why. It just rankles that we worked so hard to get our freedom from so much only to have to do all this crap again. That feels like all we worked for is being taken away once more.” Shaking his head, he told them, tone weary, “This is crap, just so you know.”“We get it,” Remus told him, weary bent to his tone. “None of us like it any more than you do, that I promise, but it's safer. This country is tearing itself apart over this war. The minute it's revealed you're back, you will be in extreme danger.”“I get it, I really do,” Harry told him. “That doesn't mean I don't hate it. The damned Horcrux is gone. We did that in the States with the surgery, but I bet that's factoring into this nightmare and Dumbledore.”“We think the same thing,” Sirius told him honestly. “Just remember that no one knows and might try for that reason, especially Albus. Though we've made damned sure you can defend yourself, what's going on here means you probably can't go it alone. You'll need us to help. While Albus and the Order won't pull that shite, the other side will and you know it. I'm betting they would try to kill you on sight. So, you need someone to help you keep watch.”“I get it,” Harry nodded. “We just need to figure out who we're watching for now. We know who was doing what during the last war, but not sure on this as Remus hasn't been back for a while to get us information.”Adding that to the list, Sirius nodded. “We do.” Glancing at Remus, he asked, “Think you can take that on? It won't look too odd as you've been in and out of the country with no one knowing the reason why.”“Let me see what I can manage over the next couple of days,” Remus told him thoughtfully. “We know some, of course, from letters, but nowhere near enough. I'll see who I can contact and get information from. I'll phrase it as I'm back for a couple of years and want filled in to protect myself.”“Good plan. We need all we can get.” Sirius nodded. Tossing the quill down as that was the last of what he needed to cover so far, he sighed. “I think we only have until that meeting with Arthur before all hell breaks loose. So, we need to take advantage of it. I say we go out for dinner tonight and have some fun. Most of what's here we can't take care of right away, though can start, in Remus' case, so no need to stress over it.” Hearing the other two agree, he nodded. “Let's get ready to go.” With that, he stood to go get a shower and get ready.
Sitting up in bed about two in the morning with Sirius sleeping on one side of him, arm draped over his legs, and Remus on the other, pressed tightly to him, Harry had his phone enlarged to size of a standard notebook and was texting with Marissa. It was about seven in the evening there, so she was up. He could easily call her, of course, but he didn't want to move from the bed. Doing that would wake Sirius and Remus. They would understand, of course, but he wanted to stay put.
Though he had sent her more videos of the house and pictures he had taken, including of the three of them, most of what he was discussing with her was how he didn't like this and wanted to go 'home'. Then how much he missed all of them back there. While he had said parts of this to Remus and Sirius, it was easier to talk to her about it. He wouldn't change his mind, of course, and would stick with the two, that didn't mean that it was easy. Marissa and his other 'girlfriends' were people he adored and were the best friends he had ever had. It was hard to be apart from them, knowing it would be for a couple of years.Despite what Marissa was like when she talked around Sirius and Remus, keeping that spoiled brat, whiny attitude, she wasn't like that with him. She was his best friend and would just let him talk then try to help all she could. She had her own insecurities, something she hid from most as a means of self-preservation behind the attitude, so she had no problems letting him vent his as she had done that with him more than once since they became friends. At the moment, she was just letting him lay everything out then talking it over with him. Though she and the other girls whined and whinged about him not being there, she understood why they were doing this and supported it. After all, all of them involved, including her father, swore it was only temporary. That part—while it bothered him, it wasn't the main reason for some of this.Part of it was losing the freedom to do what he wanted for so long. That was hard. Sirius and Remus were going to make it as easy as they could on him, of course, but it wouldn't be the same. He now had to look over his shoulder again, for plenty of things. That he hated. They hadn't had to do that for so long that it rankled to be forced to do so once more. Then there was something that he didn't talk much about, even to Sirius and Remus; the fear of what could come. Explaining a bit of what was going on, beyond what they had seen in the papers, he laid out for her how much of a target he was for so many. It felt good to get that out as he knew she wouldn't look down on him for it or tell anyone. While she was concerned, something she told him plainly, she also told him to trust Sirius and Remus. Then she reminded him how good he was at defense. After all, he had taught all his friends plenty when it came to spells to defend themselves against attacks. Smiling at that, he agreed, but explained how insane and deranged the one that wanted him dead was. That worried him, he admitted. Not to mention it worried him that Sirius and Remus were targets because of him. He didn't think he could stand to lose them after all this time. Once more she soothed him the best she could, reminding him that the three of them had managed to hold off plenty. Sirius and Remus were quite rabid about protecting him, something all of his friends knew, and were vicious when it came to someone doing something foolish. Though she hadn't seen that, Harry had talked about a couple incidents in the past where it dealt with such matters. That made him feel better. No, the fear wasn't going away, but it was down to something manageable. Marissa was able to talk him through it and make him feel better, despite the fact that she knew he was in danger. She didn't like it, and said that, but knew. That helped, more than she knew.Once he laid out what he was feeling and they talked about it, the two of them changed to more neutral topics, of the kind that would be expected of them, so, when he finally felt like he could sleep again, about four in the morning, he felt much better. Ending the text with his usual hugs for her, with the emotes for that, he slid the phone under his pillow after shrinking it to its normal size then lay back down.Snuggling up between the two, feeling them press tighter to him, he gave a sigh and shut his eyes. Though this was just starting and he knew it could get plenty bad, he was feeling better. When it got too much again, he would just call or text Marissa. She would help.Drifting off to sleep, his brow furrowed as nightmares that hadn't plagued him for years now began to play out. Though they were there, he also knew Sirius and Remus were close. They would protect him, even when he was asleep. That helped, but didn't end some of the nightmares that merged with the memories from so long ago. It just made it easier to cope with them.
