Draco smiled as he read about the sex magic involved in the Amore Schiavo ritual.
“Complete sexual fidelity is required for this ritual, and while one is naturally vowing to be faithful only to their chosen Owner, it is also strengthened if the Supplicant has only ever been with their Owner in a sexual way.A great many pairs have successfully invoked the rite with other lovers in their past, but only once has the rite been invoked with a virgin Supplicant, and that was, by far, the strongest form of Amore Schiavo ever seen. Not only did their powers blend quickly and completely, but the two were able to trust in each other implicitly, and their trust combined with joined powers was more than terrifying in its strength, and its sheer intensity.”‘Well, then, I guess it’s a good thing I’ve kept my virginity this long.’ Draco decided. ‘After all, if I’m asking Harry to protect me and give up so much energy to fulfilling my needs, it’s only right that he gets that gift, and it will only make this easier in the long run.’Because, truly, taking someone so completely under your care as to be responsible for making sure they are fed and happy was a daunting task, and the rewards should at least be worth it. What was more worth it than being the only intimate touch that person would ever know? But, Draco thought with a sinking heart, he was giving up something more precious than just his virginity. He would also have to give up his family, his Godfather, and the one person that had always loved him, no matter what else was happening in his life: His mother.Narcissa was the only person he could ever TRULY count on, and she had made sure that Draco knew he was loved dearly, no matter what grades he got, or if he won at Quidditch, or whether or not he was seen in public as a “proper Malfoy.”She had never cared about anything more than if Draco was safe and knew he was loved unconditionally. In her eyes, he could do no wrong. And he would be giving that away, only able to so much as talk to her if he had Harry‘s express permission on the matter. However, this would make him safe from his father, as well. That was what he needed, and was the whole reason he had chosen this particular ritual to accomplish his goals. Lucius held power over him so long as Draco remained his son, since Lucius was head of the family. If he wanted to pull Draco out of school, he could, with impunity. If he wanted to force Draco into the Dark Lord’s service, he could, because he held that power over Draco. The power to do anything he wanted, including imprisoning Draco in the Manor’s dungeons, if his son defied him outwardly. But without the familial ties in place, Lucius could not reclaim Draco. Not once Draco had ceased to be a person and became instead chattel. He had never owned Draco as an object, so there was not even a former claim to him that could be used to get him back, and with a legal ritual behind the power transfer over Draco to Harry, he could not contest Harry’s claim to Draco.Draco was torn on the cutting of his ties to Severus, however. His Godfather had never once mentioned the Dark Lord to Draco, but his father had hinted that Severus was a Death Eater. While Draco wasn’t sure if he believed that, he could not completely discount the idea.Severus worked for Dumbledore, yes, but he could just be the Dark Lord’s eyes and ears inside Hogwarts. He could very well be working there to keep close to Dumbledore, and relay any plans he overheard back to the Death Eaters. And he was Draco’s Head of House, which meant Draco would be in very real danger of being discovered by him, a possible enemy, before his plans ever came to fruition, if he made even a seemingly inconsequential slip. He would need to keep his cards very close to his chest until the timing was right, and that would be after the ritual had been invoked in name and in deed.Draco would have to step very carefully around Severus to avoid detection, and that meant his house mates, all save one, could never know what he was planning. Only Pansy could be trusted to keep her silence. As much as she hoped Draco would marry her one day, they were both aware that if this kind of thing had happened, they would find any possible way out left open to them, and seize it while they had the chance. And this was, most likely, Draco’s ONLY chance to escape the fate that was otherwise sealed for him.Not to mention that the idea of marrying Pansy was NOT one he relished.Mostly because she was a GIRL. It was a credit to his acting that she hadn’t guessed at his preferences yet, nor had anyone else, and he would have preferred to keep it that way, but this was beyond his control. He had a choice to make between letting the truth come out or living a--very short--lie, and he’d rather be known to be gay than to be killed by the Dark Lord or one of his servants. If nothing else, at least this whole predicament was finally giving him the incentive to be true to himself for once.Draco allowed himself a wry chuckle at that thought. Who would have guessed that the Dark Lord was responsible for Draco finally letting himself have what he wanted? The irony was incredible.*****Draco watched out the window of the Hogwarts Express as his father nodded once to him in a silent good-bye, and Narcissa waved, though keeping the motions small enough to still look dignified. He sighed quietly in longing for what he had once had. A secure place to go home to, where the outside world could not intrude, two parents who would get him whatever he wanted if he only asked, and a sense of belonging somewhere, of knowing where he was and where his life was going. Now, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever have anything like that again. If Harry didn’t help him, he could lose more than just his place in the grand scheme of things, but he’d most likely lose his very life as well. The Dark Lord was not one to suffer a traitor to live.Pansy sat down next to him and smiled sweetly at Blaise, who was behind her. “Could you wait out there for a second, and keep Crabbe and Goyle out for a second, as well? I want to talk to Draco. In private.” She added, when Blaise opened his mouth to retort.Blaise rolled his eyes in disgust, but shut the door, barring anyone else from entering. Slytherins were, after all, smart enough to know those whose social status outranked their own, and knew that small favors granted now could help them to further their own ends later in life. No matter how they felt about those favors at the time.Pansy cast a ward around the compartment, knowing that Blaise was probably listening in. “Let’s see him try to break THAT one.” She muttered, smugly putting her wand away and turning to Draco. “So.” She said, then waited, staring expectantly at Draco. When he just raised an eyebrow in query, she sighed in disgust. “Well?!” She pressed.Draco chuckled, knowing he had won the silent battle of wills. Pansy’s one weakness had always been her desire to know everything, especially if it was knowledge her peers didn’t have. “You really need patience.” He said.Pansy rolled her eyes. “And people in Azkaban need a cheering charm. The. Book.” She hissed. “Explain.”Draco bit his lip. “You looked inside it, I presume.”It wasn’t a question, and so Pansy just stared at him intently, not feeling the need to confirm that she had. Draco already knew she had.“Amore Schiavo.” Draco whispered. “Love Slave. Italian, you know.” He said wistfully, then he sighed. “My father told me a few days after my birthday that it was time for me to take the Mark.” He said abruptly, and Pansy gasped loudly.“You didn’t, did you? Oh, Draco, tell me you found a way out of it!” She begged, tears in her eyes at the thought of Draco, who was too gentle of spirit to kill without remorse, forced to murder, rape and destroy, and, in so doing, kill off his own soul, little by little.Branded for life as something that would destroy him faster and more surely than any curse, hex or spell ever could.Draco chuckled, but Pansy heard the pain behind the sound. “I told him I’d be better able to serve our Lord if I could finish school, and be able to concentrate on my lessons rather than any tasks He could set me.” He said. “And then, I started looking for my salvation.” He said, meeting Pansy’s eyes.Pansy sighed in understanding. The Amore Schiavo was Draco’s way out of the dark Lord’s service. He’d willingly give himself to another person who could protect him from falling prey to the darkness that Draco had to carefully maneuver through every day of his life. “Who?” She asked, knowing that it would have to be someone powerful, and someone irrevocably dedicated to the light. There was one person who came to mind, but surely Draco wouldn’t give himself so fully to-“Potter. He’s the only viable choice, really.” Draco told her flatly. “And I trust in his strength, and his Gryffindor nobility. His sense of right and wrong won’t allow him to hurt me, or neglect my needs once I surrender all I am to him. He’ll respect the sacrifices I’m making, I’m sure of it.” Draco said fervently.Pansy took his hand, her heart breaking for him. He wasn’t sure. His voice was overflowing with uncertainty as he tried to convince them both that what he was saying was true. But he had no way to know for certain. After all, how well did the members of Slytherin house know the hearts and minds of Gryffindors, for all they pretended to have them figured out? They were just as perplexed as the Gryffindors were when it came to Slytherin house.“I’m sure you’re right, Draco. He’ll see what an honor you’re giving him with such loyalty, and he’ll do right by you. He doesn’t seem the type to abuse his RIGHTS, much less a PRIVILEGE such as this.” She said comfortingly, her free hand coming up to trace his cheek as the hand holding his tightened reassuringly.Draco leaned into the touch, closing his eyes as he let himself bask in the comfort he so needed after so much fear and danger lurking in every shadow of his own home. “Pansy, I think you’re the only person that I can say this to, because I know you won’t laugh.” He said, then opened his eyes and looked into hers with a direct gaze. “I’m terrified.” He said flatly. “Bloody terrified of what might happen, what I’ll be losing, who I’ll have to keep secrets from, how I’ll EVER be able to pull this off…” He shook his head. “But I’m not going to talk about it anymore. Just… If someday I disappear, no matter what the signs point to as the cause, don’t give up. For me. Go to France, just like you planned. I need to know that you’ll be safe, even if I end up… Falling.” He said, using the word they had both decided on as their code word for ‘being forced into the Death Eaters.’Pansy nodded, taking his face in her hands and looking straight into his eyes. “For you, I’ll run, and never look back. Don’t worry about me. Do whatever you must to see this through, and I’ll take care of me.”Draco took a deep, shuddering breath, and nodded. “That’s all I needed to know.” He whispered. “You can let Zabini in now. He looks like he’s about to have an apoplexy.” Draco said, trying to lighten the mood.Pansy returned his wan smile and raised the ward.No one seemed concerned that Draco was quieter than usual during the ride, offering terse answers when asked direct questions, and ignoring them all otherwise. They just assumed that Pansy and Draco had had a lover’s quarrel, and Draco was brooding over it.Truly, Draco was composing his letter to Harry in his head. He’d send it the next morning, and ask him to meet that night, in the room of requirement. He could use a disillusionment charm and voice-altering spell, so that he could explain what was happening without Harry knowing his identity, and if Harry accepted, Draco would reveal who he was.If not… Draco was too afraid to consider the alternative. If you want update notices, I have a yahoo group here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sablesfics/info
