“He’s growing quickly.”
Hermione nodded absently at Snape’s comment and watched as her four year old son and his father hunted birds to sharpen his skills.
“When are you due?”
That made her snap her head around and gape.
Snape chuckled and tapped his nose. “Never fails me.”
She sighed and buried her head in her hands. “The potion tasted off the last time I drank it. I imagine it had gone bad. We’ve been careful, just in case… but you know how turns are.”
He nodded and continued to watch Scorpius perfect his pouncing. “The wolfsbane only keeps you from turning into a slavering beast. It doesn’t stop natural urges.”
“Exactly,” she sighed. “I can’t believe you allowed Harry to help you brew it.”
Snape smirked. “Potter has quite a few… talents… that I had not noticed in his earlier years.”
Hermione shook her head and felt a little sick. “If you’re going to start waxing poetic about his cock sucking skills, I’m going to vomit.”
“I’ll spare you,” Snape said wryly. “But I will make a plea for him again. He wishes to visit.”
“No,” she said immediately. “It’s bad enough that you’re involved.”
“Please,” Snape said in disgust. “Your whole pack would be dead if I didn’t give you an alternate spell to find out Scorpius’s condition.”
“I know,” she whispered, shuddering at the memory of Snape’s news when he arrived unannounced at Amelia’s house. “I still can’t believe they would calibrate a spell to kill upon casting. That’s akin to the unforgivables.”
Snape hummed. “I have a feeling that they would create one for me if they could.”
“After all you’ve done,” she said in disgust.
“You’re no slouch, my dear,” Snape said with a gentle smile.
Hermione gave him a weak smile. He’d mellowed over the years. Watching Scorpius for them during every full moon had endeared them to him even more. Scorpius was a darling boy, curious and smart as a whip while maintaining his manors. One thing they wouldn’t tolerate was prejudice. With werewolf parents and a vampire for a guardian during the full moon, he would have to endure a lot of it in his life. Thank Merlin he was purely human. She didn’t think she could bare it if he had been infected. And now she had another life to worry about. She rubbed her stomach in worry. Every day had been a struggle, wondering what the future would bring. She and Draco had decided that they would live for Scorpius’s sake. But this made that task seem even more daunting.
“I could test it now,” Snape said softly. “We need only port key somewhere remote. I’ve learned how to tune the spell in utero without your own lycanthropy affecting the outcome.”
She bit her lip and nodded. It would be better to be prepared now. “Just let me tell Draco.”
She yipped at Draco and smile when he grabbed their son and threw him over his shoulder. Their vocal anomalies never seemed to bother Snape. The vampire simply watched as Scorpius shrieked and giggled madly as Draco bound over.
“Yes, love?” Draco asked with a silly grin.
“We’re going to portkey out for a bit,” she said softly.
“Can I come?” Scorpius asked, twisting his little body to cock his head at his mum.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” she said with a soft smile. “It’s just for adults. We’ll be back in a little while and I’ll bring you something fun. How’s that?”
Scorpius pouted. “But I was gone sooo long. I want to stay with you!”
“Daddy will still be here,” she said, trying not to laugh as his overextended lower lip. “Besides, you were only gone one night.”
“Still,” he huffed and crossed his arms. “It feels like forever. My skin has bugs in it when I’m gone.”
She frowned and looked at Snape. He motioned that he’d tell her later. She sighed and nodded. “I won’t be gone all day. Promise. It’s just an errand.”
Scorpius huffed and then went limp over Draco’s shoulder. “Fine.”
Draco shook his head in amusement and pointed to her stomach. She nodded and made a swish and flick motion with her hand. Draco’s eyebrows went up and he looked at Snape who nodded. Draco nodded in turn and came up to give Hermione a rather heated kiss. It conveyed everything they couldn’t say out loud in front of Scorpius. He was terrified too but he’d be there. They were pack. Forever.
“Bye, Scorpius,” Hermione called gently, smirking as the little boy twisted again and launched himself at her. She caught him and snuggled him for a few minutes. “You be good for daddy.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said sullenly.
“I love you,” she whispered into his ear.
“Love you,” he murmured, snuggling his nose into her wild hair. She allowed him a few more minutes of comfort before she handed him back to Draco. “Bye love.”
Draco kissed her again, this time softly on the cheek. “Let me know,” he whispered.
She summoned their collection of port keys and offered them to Snape. With a weak smile, she let him know that she was okay. They could get through this too.

“It’s a girl,” Snape drawled.
She rolled her eyes. “I knew that. Draco cast the spells this morning as soon as we realized what happened. She’s healthy too.”
“Quite,” he said with a smirk. “Now, are you ready?”
She sighed. “As I’ll ever be.”
“Don’t fret until it’s necessary.”
“Easy for you to say.”
“It isn’t good for the child.”
She sighed and rubbed her temples. “Just cast the spell, please? Scorpius was really rattled.”
He cast the spell, nodded when the light glowed gold. “She’s a healthy little human. For now.”
Hermione let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. As long as the baby was in the womb, she was human. They could worry about infecting her later. That possibility would never go away, but it brought her a small amount of peace. For now.
“Thank Merlin.”
“Indeed,” he drawled. “You can relax for a few months.”
“A few?”
“Scorpius is showing signs of pack behavior.”
“He’s infected?” she whimpered.
He snorted. “Certainly not, but he’s a part of the pack and he feels… out of sorts… when separated from it. He is too young to learn how to control those feelings.”
She worried her shirt between her fingers. “Can they be controlled?”
“I believe they can,” he said soothingly as he led her out to the sandy beaches of Bali. They were beautiful in the moonlight. “I believe that if you were away from Draco for a long period of time, you would begin to grow agitated as well. That’s just part of the curse. But little Scorpius is most affected because he is so young and his magic is calling out to his parents. Potter tells me that his magic went a little haywire when he was young and wishing for his parents. His magic would destroy everything in the vicinity. Did you ever experience it?”
She shook her head. “Strange things would happen when I got upset, blackboards turning over and children’s shoes tying themselves together and such, but I never had wild magical outbursts.”
“Scorpius’s baby magic is among the strongest I’ve ever experienced. I’m not sure whether that is due to both of his parents having lycanthropy, the fact that they both have extremely strong magic, or some fluke in between, but he is going to be extremely powerful. He feels things on a primal level.”
“No doubt Draco’s teachings there,” she said wryly.
He chuckled. “I see nothing wrong with teaching the boy the mannerisms of the pack. It might make it a little odd for him to socialize later, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it.”
She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide. “Oh Gods.”
He frowned. “Have I said something to offend you?”
“No,” she said hoarsely. “I just… he really will have to go away, won’t he?”
Snape’s expression changed to one of sad understandings. “For any child to truly grow up, you must let them go.”
“But… we’re marked for death. I couldn’t bare it if they…”
“They won’t get near him,” he growled with venom.
She gave him a wan smile. “I’m glad he has someone on his side.”
“He’ll have a whole family if you’d allow it.”
She froze in her tracks when Harry’s voice echoed across the field. She hadn’t heard it in years. It was deeper, huskier somehow, but there was no mistaking it. Harry Potter had come back to upset her life again. She took a deep breath and turned. He’d grown taller but his hair was still messy and his glasses hung slightly askew on his face. He was dressed in royal blue robes with red edging, the mark of an Unspeakable. Logically, she knew that Harry would never hurt her, but that didn’t keep her heart from trying to leap out of her chest.
“I said no,” she whispered weakly as her old friend stalked across the beach.
“When has Potter ever listened?” Snape asked wryly.
“Never,” Harry said fiercely as he took in her features. “It’s been a long time, Hermione. You look well.”
She looked down at the ground. “I told you to stay away, Harry. This isn’t your fight.”
“It is,” Harry said, putting a finger under her chin and tilting her head up to look at him. “I let you go way too easy the first time, Hermione. You’re my oldest and dearest friend and I promise you that I will do everything in my power to make sure that it’s safe for Scorpius to take his rightful place at Hogwarts.”
“Y-you know about Scorpius?”
Harry smirked. “Where do you think Severus takes him during the full moon?”
She swallowed harshly. “Does everyone know?”
“Only those who are trustworthy,” Harry said softly. “Besides, Scorpius has taken quite a shine to Bill and Fleur’s second girl, Anastasia. She’s three. I couldn’t let a future part of the family be in danger. I’m an honorary Weasley you know.”
Hermione felt tears well in her eyes. “I’m dangerous.”
Harry smiled and wiped the tears from her eyes. “So am I. Now, can I visit or am I going to have to hitch a ride the next time my lover comes to collect his charge?”
She let the tears fall. “Draco is going to kill me.”
“Nah,” Harry said playfully. “Me maybe, but no one could ever hurt you.”
“Except the Ministry,” she said bitterly.
Harry’s lips pursed for a moment. “Things are changing, Hermione. Just give it time.”
She snorted. “What’s another five years, right?”
He smiled and pulled her into a hug. “That’s the spirit.”

“Muuuuuuum! Orion stole my quills!”
Hermione chuckled as Draco groaned and buried his head in her hair. The bickering wouldn’t be so bad if he wasn’t balls deep in her at the moment.
“Lyra,” she called. “Help Scorpius.”
“Why?” Lyra called.
“Because I said so! Now go.”
Draco snorted as Lyra growled deep in her throat and stomped off through the house. Hermione was glad that Severus and Harry had helped them expand the shack. It meant that they had their own rooms. That was particularly helpful now, because Draco was not about to be swayed from his task. She bit back a moan as he drew back and thrust sharply, effectively scattering her thoughts.
“There you are,” he whispered. “I thought I’d lost you.”
“Never,” she gasped as he drew back and thrust again.
This had been an excellent idea. In a few hours, Scorpius would be leaving for Hogwarts and she’d been out of sorts all week fretting about it. Draco had decided that she’d had enough. He’d been balls deep in her off and on all night and most of the morning. She enjoyed his ministrations, the way he kissed and licked his way around her body. He had it memorized now, which places made her gasp, which made her tremble with pleasure, which made her laugh, and now, which ones made her moan in ecstasy. His teeth sunk into her neck and she stifled a howl at the immense pleasure it gave her, the feeling of being claimed. He was her mate, her Alpha.
Draco swiveled his hips, abrading her already sensitive walls and taking her closer to the edge. “Love this,” he growled into her neck before pulling back and kissing her deeply. He broke the kiss. “Love you.”
Tears filled her eyes. They’d been together for a long time, though trials, tribulations, fights, sickness, health, terror, and three children. Never once had he said he loved her. She suspected he did. No one dropped kisses on your brow just because. They didn’t make breakfast in bed or bathe you when you were feeling particularly weak. They didn’t tell you how beautiful you were even when your hair was in knots from the unrelenting wind. He’d called her love but he’d never fully admitted that he loved her. As those silver eyes bored into hers, she knew it wasn’t just a heat of the moment confession. He truly loved her and he wanted her to know it. A huge weight she didn’t know she carried lifted off her shoulders and she melted into his arms.
“Love you too,” she choked and welcomed the fierce kiss that it earned her.
He picked up speed, his powerful hips driving her into the mattress even as his hands lifted her hips so he could go deeper, connect with her in every way possible. She spread her legs further, wrapping them around him and urging him on. He broke their kiss and nipped her ear.
“Come with me,” he growled.
She could do nothing but comply. He followed her with a hiss and a snap of his hips, shuddering and holding onto her tightly. She basked in his scent and the power of his grasp. When they finally came down, he collapsed to the mattress, rolling to the side at the last minute and taking her with him.
“I meant it,” he said softly as he stroked her hair.
“Me too,” she whispered.
They cuddled for a long time, finally dragging themselves out of bed when Lyra banged on the door and announced that Scorpius was being impossible and that Orion was only trying to help. They sighed and got up, their hearts heavy for the task ahead.

“He’ll be fine,” Draco cooed as they stepped up to the platform that they would walk through to take their oldest to the train.
“But will we?” she whispered.
Draco gripped her tighter. “We’ll have to trust it.”
She nodded and picked Orion up. At four, he was a bit old to carry around but it made her feel better. Draco did the same with Lyra, who protested loudly that she was much too big to be carried like a cub.
“Shush,” Draco snapped. “These are muggles. They won’t understand pack.”
Lyra’s mouth snapped shut and she leaned her head into his neck apologetically. “I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Draco said quietly. “But you must remember that not everyone is like Ms. Amelia or your uncles. They won’t understand.”
“Yes sir,” she whimpered.
“I… are you sure this is a good idea?” Scorpius asked in a strangled voice.
“You can stay with us,” Hermione said softly. “We’ll teach you all we can.”
Scorpius pursed his lips in thought but finally shook his head and sighed. “No. I want to be a potions master. You two are good but I need to be the best.”
“Then you’d better get moving,” Draco said sternly, though Hermione knew he was just as reluctant to let his eldest leave as she was. “The train will be leaving soon.”
Scorpius squared his shoulders and tightened his hands on the cart. Then he took a few steps backward and started for the wall at a run. He ran right through.
“We’d better hurry if we don’t want to lose him,” Draco said, starting forward.
Hermione ran after him, hoping desperately that no harm would come to them. Scorpius had been granted a full ride to Hogwarts by McGonagall, who knew that they didn’t have the money to put three children through such a prestigious school and pay for additional education afterwards. They were comfortable, not rich. But Scorpius’s full ride didn’t include freedom from possible ridicule. While the Ministry had finally agreed to stop the euthanasia of werewolves, that didn’t mean that eleven years of living with those views would dissipate. There were many that feared Scorpius, even though he was human. He’d have his work cut out for him.
The hustle and bustle of King’s Cross Station had been overwhelming but it hadn’t made her skin crawl. Now, watching hundreds of magical children and their families boarding the Hogwarts Express, she felt like she might claw her skin off. Even Mâkutu Kâinga didn’t have this kind of concentrated magic. It singed the inside of her nose and made her feel like she’d touched a light socket.
“Mum,” Orion whispered. “It feels like the Weasleys.”
“That is magic, child,” Snape drawled as she strolled forward to meet them. “Remember your lessons.”
“Yes, Uncle Snape,” Orion whimpered and shut his eyes to concentrate on calming his own reactions.
“Thank you,” Draco said softly. Scorpius was at his side.
“Are you ready?” Harry called, stepping around Snape.
Scorpius gulped and nodded. “I… I think so.”
“Teddy will be going with you,” Harry said with a grin. “He’ll show you the ropes.”
Teddy Lupin stepped out from behind Harry with a huge grin and bright blue hair. “That’s right. Besides, no one will mess with you. They’re too scared you’re going to bite them.”
Scorpius frowned. “But I don’t bite.”
Teddy grinned wider. “Don’t let them know that.” He winked and Scorpius giggled.
“I’ll help you with your things,” Harry said, taking Scorpius’s cart and walking towards the train.
“Um,” Scorpius said, swallowing hard. “I… I’ll write as often as I can. But you know muggle post.”
“That’s fine,” Hermione said, brushing his downy curls from his face. “We’ll understand if you don’t.”
Scorpius nodded and squeezed her in a hug. “I’ll miss you,” he breathed.
“We’ll miss you too,” she said softly. “Have fun. Be brave. And if anything happens…”
“I know,” Scorpius said solemnly. “Tell McGonagall and if it doesn’t stop… handle it.”
“That’s my boy,” Draco said with a mischievous grin. Hermione smacked him in the stomach and he huffed. “Well, what else do you expect? I was a Slytherin.”
She rolled her eyes and watched as Scorpius and Draco embraced. No stiff Malfoy goodbyes for them. She took a curious glance around and noticed a few of their previous classmates stopping to stare at them. She supposed they were a novelty. Word of their affliction had spread all over now. Luckily, they had a ward up that wouldn’t allow mail delivered to the island. They had gotten a muggle post office box for correspondence purposes and Snape and Harry were the only ones who could apparate directly to the island. Still, she knew they were disliked on principal, but nothing that would warrant the blatant shock on their faces now.
“They can’t believe a Malfoy could have a heart,” Snape said, startling her.
“What?” she breathed.
Snape nodded toward Draco and Scorpius, who were hugging and talking quietly, Lyra standing beside them listening raptly. It was a common scene but she supposed no one else got to witness it.
“They still think him the same callous boy they grew up with.”
She frowned. Draco had changed so much since then. He was sweet and sensitive and caring, a little brisk and haughty, but nothing like he’d been. His body was hard and sharp, making him look ruggedly handsome. He was proud now. She supposed they wouldn’t have known that he’d lost that pride, his self-respect, his very being. They couldn’t have known how close to death he’d come, how many times he’d tried to end it all. All they saw now was his squared shoulders, the fierce look in his eyes, and the stern set of his jaw. But that soft glow in his eyes was love, love for his son and his family. She wished the world knew him like this.
“I believe you both found the best way,” Snape said suddenly.
“What?” she asked in shock.
Snape nodded to Draco and Scorpius again, hugging goodbye. “He was a shell. You both were. Now you’re stronger than before. Magnificent even. I think your choice to run was the correct one, even though I didn’t believe it at the time.”
She smiled. “That reminds me. Scorpius!”
“Yes?” her son said, breaking away from his father.
“Can you deliver a message for us?”
He nodded. “What?”
“There’s a ghost at Hogwarts, no one sees her much. She’s got long curly blonde hair and she’s wearing a Gryffindor uniform. Her name is Lavender Brown.”
Scorpius frowned. “How did she die?”
Draco grimaced and walked over. “She was killed by the werewolf that turned your mother and me.”
“Oh,” Scorpius said quietly.
“I want you to find her,” Hermione continued. “Tell her… tell her we finally found it and now it’s her turn.”
Scorpius frowned. “Found what?”
Hermione smiled. “She’ll know. Just tell her.”
Scorpius shrugged. “Sure.” The train whistled and he looked up in surprise. “Gotta go!”
They watched him careen through people, Teddy hot on his heels. No one did anything except watch. She sighed as he disappeared through the door.
“He’ll be fine,” Draco said, holding her close.
“I know,” she said, laying her head on his chest. “I know.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“What’s that?” Draco asked as Hermione sat down and studied the letter in her hands.
“A letter from Scorpius.”
He washed the dirt off of his hands from working in their magically enhanced garden. It had taken them ages to set the wards so they could grow one. “Did you already drop the kids off?”
She nodded. “I can’t believe they agreed to take them for an entire weekend.”
Draco chuckled and kissed her temple while drying his hands off. “I can’t say I’m not glad. It hasn’t been just us without a turn in…”
“Eleven years,” she said with a wistful sigh. “Gosh time flies.”
He shook his head. “Read it. I know you’re dying to.”
She rolled her eyes but tore into the letter just the same. Scorpius’s penmanship was flawless, as they’d trained him. Draco picked her up and sat her back down in his lap on the chair, reading over her shoulder. Tears sprung to her eyes as she read.
Dear Mum and Dad,
School is amazing, just like you always said it would be. Ravenclaw tower is really cool. We don’t have a password like you guys used to have. We have to answer a riddle. I haven’t gotten one wrong yet. My favorite part is the Black Lake, though. I’ve already made friends with the mermaids. Everyone is amazed that I can speak mermish, enough that they stopped teasing me about being a werewolf. Don’t worry though, I didn’t tell them where I learned it. Tell Ms. Amelia thank you for me! I still don’t know what’s so wrong with being a werewolf. It isn’t like you guys are dangerous.
Classes are going good. Professor Flitwick says I’m a chip off the old block. McGonagall says that means that I’m as good as my parents but I’ve never heard that expression before. Is it muggle? I’m going to have to look it up later. I love transfiguration too. I’m not sure about Herbology, but Professor Neville says that it takes a while to get used to the plants. Professor Binns is a snore and I can get all the stars I want at home. Why do I have to look at them here too? Potions and Defense are my favorites though. The Defense teacher is someone named Hollister. He’s a retired auror and he doesn’t care about my heritage. Uncle Snape says that the Potions Master, Professor Snagglesworth is a soft little worm, but I like him. He’s not nearly as scary as Uncle Snape when I get something wrong. But he also has a lot of blown up cauldrons happen in class so maybe it’s not always a good thing.
It took me a few weeks to find your ghost, though. Lavender isn’t like the other ghosts. She likes to hang around outside and right at the entrance. I went to the library and learned that she was killed there and still watches over the doors to protect everyone. She’s really shy but very nice. I told her your message mom. She got this kind of funny look on her face and then she hugged me. Hugging a ghost is really strange, like being wrapped up in a cold blanket. Anyway, she said to tell you thank you and that she’d do the same. I’m kind of worried about her. I haven’t seen her in a few days, ever since this brilliant flash happened when Teddy and I shook hands with some Slytherins after dueling practice in the Great Hall. You don’t think she crossed over do you? I’ll miss her if she did. She was really cool.
Anyway, I’d better go now. Teddy promised to show me this brilliant room that turns into different things when you ask it something. I want to ask it to turn into the ocean at home. I miss swimming in it and they say I can’t swim in the Black Lake because of the giant squid. I’ll write again when I can and I’ll see you both at Christmas.
Love,
Scorpius
P.S. Don’t worry about me. Everything is really great!
“Oh Draco,” Hermione whispered when she was finished reading.
“I know, love. I know.”
He held her close and let her snuggle into him. She sighed and relaxed, basking in the one thing she didn’t think that either one of them would ever find.
Peace.
