Harry Potter was sitting on a stool in the Great Hall, with a hat covering most of his face. The whole school was looking at him, how could they not be. It hadn't taken this long to get anyone else sorted. After the initial murmuring when his name was called it seemed the entire hall had gone completely silent. Finally a voice, hopefully one only he could hear thought Harry, sounded in his head.
" Quite a brain you have Harry. So many good qualities, so much potential, but which house do you belong in? Hmmm"
"NOT SLYTHERIN" Harry thought as loudly as he could.
"Not Slytherin you say? Why don't you want to be a member of that noble house? You can do great things young Harry, and learn much about yourself. Things are not always as seem Harry Potter. I'm sorry I don't think I can choose anything but...
"SLYTHERIN" the hat bellowed out for all to hear.
Somewhat embarrassed Harry stood and placed the hat back onto the stool and headed towards the green and silver banners. Amidst a decently loud applause from all tables. Perhaps it was only his imagination after hearing the rumor that Voldemort was a Slytherin, but all the students seated around him at the table. He recognized one girl he had watched her sorting, her name was Millicent Bullstrode. She was very large for an eleven year old, kind of brutish looking but she was the only first year near him, so he took a chance and smiled at her. She looked surprised but after a second she smiled back. To Harry's surprise her smile transformed her face, how could he have thought her brutish he didn't remember. She smiled at him kindly, looking as relieved as he was not to feel quite so alone.
Harry stood alone at his table and clapped loudly as Ron was sorted into Gryffindor, gaining him many dirty looks from his fellow Slytherins. Harry didn't care, Ron seemed decent enough. His brothers seemed funny and friendly, the older one was a bit boring perhaps but still nice. When everybody was sorted the headmaster stood, made a few quick announcements and then declared,
"Nitwick, blubber, oddment, tweak!"
With that more food that Harry had ever seen appeared on the table before him. Unable to decide between the many roast meats and side dishes Harry helped himself to a little bit of members of his house had clapped loudly as if it had become a competition to "get Potter" when the sorting was so slow in it's decision, but now they seemed uninterested in him. Luckily Millicent began talking to him. He didn't have the nerve to start a conversation just yet in this hostile environment.
" Is it true then? Dumbledore sent you off to live with muggles? Are they awful? I heard muggles do all sorts of weird things with children. Make up fictional characters and convince them that some imaginary man is delivering their presents on Christmas! Is that true?" She said surprisingly fast.
"Um, yeah... They call him Santa Claus, they leave him cookies and everything. Then the parent nibble on the cookies and take a drink of milk and use that as evidence! It's pretty crazy. Muggles aren't bad though, well most of them aren't. Some are horrible, but is imagine that's the same for witches and wizards."
" I've never met a muggle before, my family is pureblood all the way through. My cousin Scott just got engaged to a mudblood though, and no one thinks it's that big of a deal" Millicent stated turning serious.
"Mudblood?"
Oh I'm sorry Harry... I shouldn't even say that to you. A mudblood is a witch or wizard born to muggle parents." Millicent explained sheepishly, " It's a stupid word, I'm sorry that wasn't very considerate of me."
"It's alright, informative at least. Don't feel bad about it, from what I've heard so far I should get used to that kind of talk. I met Draco Malfoy in Diagon Alley, do you know him?" Harry said dismissing her guilt.
"Yeah, his family is very wealthy. Also very pure, he has the type of family that wouldn't take so kindly to a member marrying a muggleborn. He's a spoiled prat. His father is high up on the ministry's ladder so they have a lot of influence. It's not a bad idea to learn about a few of the older families. It's kind of a big deal, especially in Slytherin. If you want I'll help you learn some basics, it's got to be weird coming from a muggle family into the magical world without knowing a whole lot." Said Millicent.
"That would be real great of you! I keep saying things that no one understands. On the train I said the name Voldemort and everyone hit the ceiling." Harry revealed, a little louder then he had intended. All the students sitting his vicinity were now looking at him oddly.
Although everybody returned to their desserts Harry knew that all the murmured conversations were about him. People would randomly glance his direction every few seconds. He smiled awkwardly at his new friend, deciding it best to remain silent for the rest of the the feast lest he make a fool of himself.
The treacle tart was scrumptious but Harry had already eaten more then his stomach could handle. Halfway through his plate of treacle tart he had to stop eating. Since most of the hall was still eating Harry took the time to scope out the teachers table. I. The center sat Professor Dumbledore to his right was a dark haired older witch next to her Professor Quirrell was talking to a dark haired sallow skinned man. As Harry looked the black haired man looked up and locked eyes with him. Harry's scar twanged painfully but he barely noticed. The man was looking at him so oddly, as though he didn't expect what he was seeing.
"Who is that dark haired man? Next to Professor Quirrell?" Harry asked an older student sitting near him.
"That's Professor Snape, potions master and head of our house. If I were you I wouldn't say the dark lords name in front of him. " the kid answered quickly looking away from Harry.
Harry had to wonder, why he was looking at him so oddly. At first he looked angry, like seeing me frustrated him but then it changed to something else completely, confusion? Maybe he was imagining things, it has been a long day and Harry for one was ready to sleep.

The Slytherin House entrance was deep in the dungeons. Harry and Millicent walked with the small group of first years including Draco Malfoy and his two friends Crabbe and Goyle, two girls that Harry didn't recognize and another boy who Harry didn't know. They all followed a prefect who introduced herself as Calypso Rosier. She seemed nice enough under her tough exterior attitude. She was kind to the first years and answered any questions they had on the way to the dungeon. Once the group reached the entrance to their common room she stopped the group.
" Listen up first years, the current password is 'Purity'," at her words the stone wall they were standing before opened.
" There are a few rules your expected to follow as a Slytherin, please take care to remember them or you will make many enemies. First of all, no matter what happens, Slytherins are a united house. In public you are not to speak against any member of your house, if you see someone bullying a member of our house you're expected to step in. Older students will do so for you as well. Secondly you are not to bring members of any other house to our common room, I would advise you not to test this one. Finally, our head of house is Professor Snape. You will treat him with the utmost respect and follow his every command, if you fail to do so he will have you expelled."
She motioned for them to follow her once more,
"This is the common room, you may spend your free time here and do your homework here, we do have grade policies. And as such there are specific people in the common room to help with homework at all times. Just ask around to find who it is when your doing your work. Here," she motioned to two black stone doors, " ...are the dormitories, the left is the girls, the right is the boys. You're bunked according to your year, first year boys will share one dormitory and so on like that. There's no passwords involved here when you open the door it will magically select the proper room for you. Your belongings should already be inside. If there's no more questions I'll leave you here, it's been a long day and I'm very tired." Calypso finished her speech smiling at the young group.
The group thanked her and bade her a good night before separating and entering their dormitories. Draco Malfoy, his friends Crabbe and Goyle... Harry would have to learn their first names, and a small boy named Blaise all entered their dormitory before Harry and found their beds. Harry walked to the remaining bed and examined his new living area. Unlike the common room there were windows here, suggesting they were at least as high as the first floor. It was too dark to enjoy the view so he turned back towards his bed it was large with black wood shrouded in green fabric.
"Potter, fancy seeing you in my house. Maybe the sorting hat needs a tune up. You certainly don't belong here." Came a familiar drawling voice from behind him.
Draco had the bed next to Harry, he was leaned back comfortably with a smirk across his pale face.
" I do hope you reconsider my offer of help sorting out who the right people are Potter." Draco finished before closing the drapes around his bed.
Harry said nothing. He still planned on being friends with Ron, no matter if they were blood traitors or not. Just because he was a slytherin didn't mean he had act the rest of them. Millicent seemed like a good friend to have, and Harry was sure he'd make more friends in his house as term progressed.
