Hermione nervously checked the route several times before departing.
She made a point to force herself to do things when all she wished to do was hide out in her room, reading old school books.
It was becoming easier to go out. Today, she actually looked forward to her trip. She was visiting Neville Longbottom for tea, and then after that she would visit a new bookstore at Diagon Ally.
At the door she stopped, carefully checking her clothes: beneath a plain black robe she wore a dress. It was a dress today, instead of jeans, because she was meeting Neville whom she had not seen in a while. She wanted to look nice, and for her it was a special occasion. It was not often she met with a friend. Most were too busy, finding their own way to get on with their lives. For most, it was work. Or family.
She frowned. Was the dress overdoing it? She never really knew with clothes. It was just a plain dress, hitting three inches above the knee. A light pink dress you might wear anywhere. Her shoes were sandals. New sandals; in fact her mother insisted that she wear 'lady sandals' instead of flip flops so these were actually fashionable. And uncomfortable as hell but she did not expect to do a whole lot of walking today.
And she put her curly hair up in a messy bun. Her goal was to somehow look 'cute' and she wanted to look good without trying--something she never excelled at. It was just so damn hard to look good without actually looking like she cared. Others, like Ginny, had that gift. Not her.
'I am going to get changed,' she mumbled, 'I look ridiculous--'
'What a pretty dress!' Her mother exclaimed.
She lit up. Flushing, she grinned like a silly girl, 'Really?'
'I think you look so cute.'
Mind changed. World, here I come.
She put on a pair of sunglasses. It looked ridiculous, she knew, but anyone would think she was just a silly muggle and not Hermione Granger.
Ok. I have my wand, my bag. My money. Okay. Let's do this Granger.
'See you in a bit mum!'
Hermione apparated. It was the first time in months, and she was actually a bit dizzy before she straightened and looked about.
Sure enough, she was in Diagon Alley.
Witches and wizards and all sorts of magical creatures moved past her, paying her no mind. Feeling a bit self-aware, she wrapped her robe about her and hugged her arms to her chest. A few people cast her a glance before moving on. She couldn't help but think they were whispering about her appearance. Of course she knew that wasn't true, but she had the confidence of a broken rock.
I knew it. I should not have worn the dress.
But she hurried over to the newest cafe, and plopped down in a seat.
The interior was very bright, with a kind of nature theme. pretty flowers grew all around her. Hermione ordered a cup of tea. And waited.
She finished her first cup of tea, glancing at the clock.
Had she gotten the time wrong?
Two cups of tea later, and a full bladder, she was beginning to think something had happened.
She left for the loo, and after relieving herself wondered how to get in touch with Neville.
She went back outside, and several excited waitresses surrounded her.
'M-Miss Granger?'
Hermione felt herself shrink back a bit. How did they--
'You received a note.'
Hermione thanked them, and ducked away. Luckily people left her alone. She still wasn't Harry.
Hastily, she tore the note open and stared at the messy hand writing of Neville.
'Sorry Hermione. Detained at work. Let's do it again later.'
She did her best to remain calm, and thanked god she wore the sunglasses. After paying for the tea she practically ran from the cafe, ducked into an alley, and did her best to remain calm. But she felt the tears.
Not even Neville wanted to visit her. It was stupid, but she had been so excited.
Her loneliness was never more stark.
Sniffling, she removed her glasses and wiped her eyes.
No cry.
Startled, she looked around. But she was alone. Not a soul in site.
'And now I'm losing my mind.'
Inexplicably, that made her laugh. She was getting upset over nothing.
Wiping away the tears, she put the glasses in her bag.
She was going to skip the book store.
'If Neville won't come to me, I'll just have to go to him.'
Which meant going to the Ministry of Magic.
