I want to thank everyone for their reviews! Here is the next chapter!
Chapter 4Harry stepped into the chamber and silently took in the sight that was before him. The room in front of him was amazing, a beautiful meadow surrounded by a painted forest. The floor of the chamber was covered with lush green grass and slanted down slightly toward the center of the room where a crystal clear pool stood tranquil and bordered on one side by the biggest oak Harry had ever seen. The trunk was wider then his arms out stretched and the canopy spread out meters on all sides and the height was unmeasurable. It cast cooling shade over the pool and most of the grassy floor, stopping just short of the walls. The walls were as beautiful as the rest of the room in their own way. They were a painted forest full of plants and animals all so realistic one could accidentally walk into the wall thinking the room extended farther. All this was lighted by a ceiling spelled to reflect the sky, but to a much more realistic degree then the great hall at Hogwarts.Harry walked onto the grass and made his way to stand beside the pool and glanced around. There had to be more to this room then there appeared, his mother made sure that it was left to him and that meant that there was something here for him. Harry glanced down into the water of the pool and that is when he saw the image. It was like watching a wizarding picture in that it would run through a few actions and then repeat. It showed a red haired woman walking around the pool and disappearing into the tree. It brought to mind the entry way to the Hogwarts Express and Harry decided to give it a try. He walked quickly strait at the tree and without hesitating right into the chamber inside. A quick glance back showed a doorway with the telling shimmer of a concealment charm.
Turning back to the rest of the room he saw it was an antechamber with three doors leading off it. In the middle of the room was a small table and on it was an envelope with his name on it and a small carved wooden box. Walking over Harry picked up the box and opened it to show a pendent and ring set made from white gold, though both were blank with no decoration. A little disappointed Harry set the opened box aside and picked up the envelope. Turning it over Harry saw the seal was that of a lily pressed into red wax and he knew without a doubt that it was his mother's seal, placed there with her own hands. Marveling over holding something his mother had touched he realized that no one really talked about his mother that much, only his father. Taking a deep breath Harry gently slid his finger under the seal and managed to work it free without breaking it before pulling the folded parchment out. Setting the envelope aside he unfolded the single page and began to read.
Dearest Harry,Hello my baby boy. If you are reading this then I know that the sight that had been shown to me not long after your birth has come to pass and we were not there to raise you. For that I am truly sorry for your life must have been hard without us. I hope you know that we love you very much and would have done anything to stay with you. I wept the night my dreams showed me that you would grow up in an unloving environment and that you would suffer greatly for the 'greater good'. When I told your father he laughed it off as just a bad dream brought on by stress, but I knew and it lead me to take measures to insure you would have the chance to become who you want to be.I left a letter with Dumbledore to give to you on your eleventh birthday or your first day at Hogwarts explaining everything about your heritage. I hope you received it like I intended, but don't hold out much hope for it as I have become very disillusioned with Dumbledore and his greater good. The only hope I have is that the same dream that warned me of our fate also gave me a glimpse of you reading this letter on your sixteenth birthday.
That is the way of the Sight sometimes. It can be both caring and cruel depending on its mood, and I hope that it is not one of the Gifts you find yourself with after the unbinding ritual. I hope that you see the Gifts that come with your Fae heritage as blessings and not curses as some do. All the Gifts have advantages and disadvantages, all are both light and dark depending on how they are used. You also must understand that dark does not mean evil, it is just as necessary for life as light is. They are two sides of a single coin, and both are necessary.
But I digress, more on all of this and many other things are held in my journals which are housed in the library behind the middle door. There are some basic things you need to know right away that I will cover in this letter and then let you get on with all the important things that need done.
First off, do not put on the ring and pendent until after your ritual. They are made to take on an image that represents you in all your glory when you put them on for the first time. If you put them on before the ritual you may not get an accurate design and it is important that you do. This image will become your seal and it will hold great weight in some circles, almost as much as your signature.
Second, after your ritual tell the goblins that you have decided to hold true to Fae traditions and beliefs. This will free you from needing a guardian as Fae are legal adults at sixteen, you can legally make this choice as you are at least half Fae. You could have legally announced this at fifteen and it would have been excepted. In case you are worried this is a law up held by the ministry of magic, they would have to except it. There is also a small book that was written by an ancestor of ours that will give you a rundown on all the major beliefs and traditions, it's considered the idiot's guide to Fae heritage and will get you started.
Third, you will more then likely face some strong opposition on a couple of fronts and will have to hold strong and not give in. One will be the Ministry its self, because while it will have to hold up its own law they will try to get you to sign their creature registry. You don't have to, when the registry was first created they wrote it so that only 'dark and dangerous' creatures had to sign because they knew that they would have a rebellion on their hands if they tried to force all non-humans to sign it. Just give them some excuse like 'to truly know who and what I am will take time, I will have to get back to you when I know.'. The second opposition will most likely be those who have sought to control you, they will try hard to keep you under control. Stand your ground, you have a strength in you that few can even guess at.
That is most of the important items that needs to be dealt with in that area, and I am sure you will handle it well. Now a few things about my vault, now your vault. The left hand door leads to the armory, it contains the weapons handed down through our blood line, as well as anything that has to do with clothes, shoes, and pouches and bags. Right inside on a table is a bag I thought you might find useful. Let a drop of your blood fall on the bag and it will be coded to you, meaning only you can use it and only you can take it off you once it is on. It will also hide itself from the sight of others so that they will not even know it is there. There are three pockets in the bag that are expanded by magic to a reasonable size and each are spelled to shield its contents from harm.
Next the middle door is the library, it holds generations of information. Each of the vaults holders before you has written down their lives in the hopes that the lessons they learned can be of help to the generations to come. I would encourage you to do so as well so that those that come after will know your tale. There are also multitudes of other books as well and they range from children tales to grimoires. I would suggest taking a few with you to read, but use the bag to keep them safe.
The last door holds safe the magical artifacts that our family has come to posses throughout the centuries. Some are awe inspiring and others are horrifying, each has a name and description written in the Index, the large book on the podium. Even in dire straits think twice before removing the stronger and more dangerous items for they tend to come with a price that must be paid. The weaker and lesser items use as you will, but try to keep them from the hands of those who would use them to harm others.
Harry, my son, the greatest lesson any parent can teach their child is to listen to your heart and be true to yourself, for only then can you truly say that you have lived your life to the fullest. And that is what I want for you my son, a full life full of happiness and love to balance out the pain of your childhood. So go with my blessings and my hopes for your future and make the most out of the Gifts that you receive during your unbinding. I foresee that your Legacy will be greater than any can imagine.
Your Loving Mother,Lily of the Fire, also Lily PotterHarry wiped away the tears that were running down his face and refolded the letter before replacing it in it's envelope. Taking the letter and the box Harry went into the left hand door and found the bag just like his mother had written. Picking it up Harry looked around the room. It was circular with shelves and glass fronted cabinets completely lining the walls and even more standing alone in the middle of the floor. They contained short blades, clothes, bags, and other small items. There were also racks of swords and spears situated at the ends of the free standing shelves. Looking around Harry surveyed the multiple shelves and weapon wracks before he was able to find a grouping of short blades and used one of the smaller knives to prick his finger and let a drop fall on the bag. Sticking his finger in his mouth Harry watched as the magic in the bag rippled then settled once again. Checking to make sure his finger had stopped bleeding Harry opened the smallest pocket and placed both the letter and the box inside.Harry took a moment to wipe the blade clean and replace it on the shelves before glancing around once more and turning to leave. There were multitudes of interesting things that he would have to come back and look at closer, but he had kept Nagnok waiting long enough and he still had a few things to gather out of the library. Leaving the room he turned into the library door and walked into the second biggest library Harry had ever been in. The room was literally full of bookshelves and books. In fact there were so many books that they all couldn't fit on the shelves and were piled in corners and walk ways.
Harry at first was at a loss as to how to find the books he wanted, but then he saw a small newer looking shelf in the front to the far right. Walking over to it Harry was able to read the small plaque on the end. It read, Lily of the Fire. Looking at the books Harry saw that they were his mothers journals as well as a few others that looked like they could be the ones on Fae traditions that she had mentioned. Bloody Hell, one was even named Fae traditions for Idiots and beginners. Snorting, Harry grabbed it and the last three journals in the hope that they were the ones to cover all the things that the letter only touched on. Harry placed them in the same pocket as the letter and the box before slipping the bag over his head and heading for the door. He would eventually read all his mothers journals, he swore to himself that he would, but now was the time to focus on what is necessary to start his new life.
Harry passed through the antechamber and out of the tree into the bright sunlight. He made his way over to Nagnok who had remained by the door the entire time Harry was inside. Stopping by the goblin he took another look back at the ancient tree and smiled, before turning back to his guide.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, my mother left me a letter that needed to be read and then I took a look around. We can head back up now and meet with the account managers, that is if there is still time to do that.”
Nagnok looked startled at the apology. “There is no need to apologise my Lord. It is my job to wait for you to get done then lead you back to the top. Besides you were quicker then most who come to visit their vaults and this vault isn't necessary hard to spend time in, it isn't often that I get to spend time in the sun. And yes there is still time to meet with your account managers, though visiting the vaults themselves will most likely have to wait tell after the ritual.” Harry nodded and the two left the vault and made the trip back.
Nagnok decided to cut down the time it would take to meet with the other goblins by meeting with them both in the Potter account office. Once there the goblins each gave Harry the account summaries then gave him the run down of the information that they held. They also handed him the Lord rings for both families, they would be a easy sign for those that looked that he had indeed taken up the lordships.
“The Black family vaults haven't been entered sense before young Sirius Black went to prison and the only people to enter it in the designated time frame was his mother. Sirius did make a large purchase from his personal account a few years ago through Quality Quidditch Supplies here in Diagon Alley. The bill did not note what was bought.” The Black family's account manager was a short portly goblin by the name of Kest. He had been put out when told the meeting was to be held in the Potter managers office. “Mostly the account has been setting and gathering interest over the years, the only money leaving the vault are the monthly allowances to the black family members. The only members still receiving money from the family vaults are Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy as all other living members of the Black family have been disowned.”
“Who are the disowned members that are still alive?” Harry asked.
“Andromeda Tonks and her daughter.”
“As Lord Black is it in my power to except back into the family those who have been disowned?” Harry asked Kest who frowned but answered.
“Yes, but it may reflect bad on you as a new Lord. It might be best to leave things as they are.”
Harry's eyes hardened and his tone became unfriendly as he replied. “I do not care how it reflects on me. I am not happy with the actions of this family and I mean to make some changes. First I want Andromeda and her daughter reinstated into the family. I want them to start to receive the normal amount of allowances and then I want you to calculate how much money they would have gotten over the years that they were disowned. That amount is to be transferred to their accounts by the end of the day. On top of that I want you to compose a letter to each of them to inform them of their reinstatement to the family and the amount of their allowances. But leave my actual name out of it, use only the title Lord Black.” Harry took a deep breath as he watched Kest scribble down the orders and glanced at the surprised looks on the faces of the other two. “Lastly I wish to disown Bellatrix Lestrange, cut her off completely, and cut Narcissa Malfoy down to a fifth of her normal allowances. I want Narcissa to know that I am not happy with her alliances and that I am a step away from cutting her off entirely.”
Kest nodded shortly, “Is that all my Lord Potter-Black?”
Harry nodded, “Thank you Kest, and I am sorry for the amount of work I have placed on you, but it needs to be done.”
Kest eyes widened and he bowed. “It is no problem my Lord, I relish having something to do for a change. It will all be done at once.” Here he smiled a grim upturn of lips. “In fact I can't wait until all this comes out. The up roar it will create will be very entertaining and I will watch it with much enjoyment.”
Harry laughed as he watched the portly goblin leave the office, before turning to the second account manager. This goblin had remained silent as Kest went through the Black account with him. Nax was one of the older goblins that Harry had met so far, not nearly as old as Bloodseer but old enough.
“Now, my Lord, shall we move on to the Potter accounts now?”
Harry nodded, “Yes please.”
“Very well. The Potter vaults are in good order as I have reported to your guardian regularly, so I don't know why we are even having this meeting.”
Harry frowned and glared at the goblin on the other side of the desk. “We are having this meeting because as Lord Potter I have ordered this meeting. I have only today learned that I have a magical guardian or a title. I have been raised by my muggle aunt and uncle until now and only learned of the magical world when I received my Hogwarts letter. So I want to know everything about my vaults and a full list of everyone who has had access to them. You did do as I asked, did you not. I would hate to have to replace a person who has served my family for so long.”
Nax's eyes widened as Nagnok gasped. “I have served this family for centuries and you think you can threaten me? “
Seeing Harry about to do something that could cause him major trouble Nagnok interrupted for the first time since the meetings started. “I think what Lord Potter is trying to do, and failing miserably, is to find out subtly if you are loyal to the Potter family and him, or is it his guardian who pulls your strings.”
Harry gaped at the goblin and asked seriously, “Are you trying to help or hurt me?”
Nagnok snorted before replying, “Help you of course. What you need to remember my Lord is that it is better to be strait forward with goblins, we are tough enough to take it. Don't try to dance around the point, we don't have the patience for it.”
Watching the exchange Nax seemed to calm down and realize more was going on then a mere account review. “Am I correct in assuming that there may be a problem with Albus Dumbledore's guardianship of you my Lord?”
Harry turned back to Nax and stated plainly, “If you mean, do I think he purposely kept me in the dark about my lordship and the other vaults as well as the fact that he was my magical guardian to farther his own agenda? Then the answer is yes. Right now I am trying to find out just how much that old fool has screwed me over.”
Nax eyes narrowed, “You didn't know he was your guardian and you were raised by your muggle relatives? I take it to mean that you were never checked up on or received anything from Dumbledore? Did he pay your relatives any money to help keep you?”
“No I was never visited or received anything from Dumbledore, except a cloak that was my fathers and left in his care. Though I always wondered how he got it. As far as I know he did not pay them anything to keep me. Knowing them they would have done anything they could to get as much money out of him as possible and would have complained that the money wasn't enough to have to put up with me. My relatives hate magic and did not like me at all. My childhood was a mixture emotional and physical abuse. So no I do not think he has performed his duties at all.”
Nax frowned. “Well, that does not match with the records of your accounts. Dumbledore has made a monthly with drawl from the Potter vaults since you were put under his care. He always listed your care as the reason for the with drawl, which is the only reason he would be able to get the money at all.” He saw that Harry was about to explode and went on hurriedly. “Not to say that you are lying, only that there is a difference of stories. But to judge by your dress and body size I would be inclined to believe your story.”
Harry glanced down at his baggy sweater and raggedy pants. “They think only the most worn out and holey of my cousins cast offs are good enough for me. The only new thing of my own I have ever got from them were my glasses and I only got them because the muggle school I went to told them I needed them. They were afraid that the school would take notice that I didn't get them. As it is they are so out of date as to be almost useless.”
Nax nodded. “It seems we have a case of a rogue guardian who thinks it's okay to steal from us, and that is very much not the case. I did get together the summary you had asked for, and you can take it with you, but now that I know what is going on I can make up a more focused report on the actions of Dumbledore at least as far as your vaults are concerned. I will be forced to report my findings to the bank manger and he will probably press charges with the ministry of magic for the rogue guardianship and fine Dumbledore's vaults the total amount taken from your vaults plus interest that it would have earned.”
Harry took the summary and nodded to the rest. “I have a ritual to go through, would it be possible to hold off reporting to the bank manager until it is over? I don't need Dumbledore showing up and trying to get in my way.”
Nax nodded as Nagnok spoke up, “He can't interfere with this ritual. It is always the choice of the individual involved. But it would still be a good idea to wait.”
Harry was putting the two summaries away in the bag when a thought struck him. “I think it would be a good idea to make my school account my main spending account and set up monthly deposits from both the Potter and Black accounts. Lets make the amount 5,000 galleons from each. Is there any way for me to get money from my account without having to come into the bank?”
Nax nodded as he took down notes on the changes. “There is a pouch that lets you pull wizarding money strait from your vaults and a card that you can use in the muggle world which acts like a credit card. Would you like either of these?”
Harry nodded. “Give me both.”
Harry watched as both the pouch and card was produced from the desk and laid before him. Nax also produced the papers that authorized the use of the items with the Potter account. As Harry read through the papers and signed them, Nax went on to explain how they worked. “The card works like a muggle credit card and automatically charges your account, while with the pouch you have to touch the pouch and think how much money you need. The money will appear in the pouch for your use.”
Harry handed the papers back and decided to ask, “Since I have taken on my titles, I don't need any one else to look after my accounts do I?”
“No, Lord Potter. By taking up your lordship you take on responsibility for all the work that goes with it. The only thing your guardian is in charge of now is your well being.” Nax answered as he took the papers and signed them as well before placing them into the bottom draw of his desk. “Both the pouch and card need a drop of blood to key to you and then you can take them with you.”
Taking the pin knife that Nax held out to him he made short work of blooding both of them and handed the knife back. As he placed his finger in his mouth to stop the bleeding Harry decided to cut off the problem when it came to people taking whats not theirs. Removing his finger Harry focused on Nax once more.
“Fine, with all that out of the way I guess that the only thing left to do, that I can think of, is to make sure I am the only one with access to the accounts. Take every one else off.”
“Very well my Lord. Besides Dumbledore the only one who had been given access is Mrs. Weasley and she was only given access to your school account.” Nax added more to his notes before asking, “Do you want me to write them and let them know that they have been removed? And how polite would you like the letters to be if you do want me to write them.”
Harry nodded, “Yes, please write them and I only care that you are polite to Mrs. Weasley. Her family has been very kind to me and I don't want to hurt her feelings.”
Nax snorted, but took down the note. Harry stored away the pouch and card and was making his good byes with his account manager when there was a knock on the door. The goblin who entered the room bowed quickly and informed Nagnok that the ritual was ready and that they should make their way to the lowest level to prepare.
