A/N: So, sooner than I thought I'd be updating, but being sick and stuck in bed means lots of typing happens but not so much packing... Thank you all so much for the wonderful reviews. To answer a question posed by samara, yes, I plan to have something real develop between Draco and Maya, you'll see a bit of it in this chapter. Anywho, enjoy!!! Let me know what you think! I love the feedback and it inspires me to write faster :D
Chapter 4“Malfoy, would you hurry up!”“I'm coming, Granger, don't get your knickers in a knot,” he replied, catching up to her.She scowled at him before pushing open the library door and making her way over to one of the large tables. She flicked her wand and books started flying off the shelves, neatly stacking themselves in two piles. Draco shook his head, she really was rather efficient at studying.McGonagall had asked them to do some preparation for the new class. The first one was being held tomorrow and she wanted them to know some of the spells the professors would be teaching, at the very least she wanted them to have a thorough understanding of the theory behind the spells. Granger had, of course, bubbled at the prospect of researching the new topics and promptly told him to meet her after supper at the library. She was now sitting down at the table she'd chosen, one book already open in front of her. Draco didn't immediately sit and grab a book, he wanted to see if she'd notice or if she was already ensnared by the information on the page. A few seconds ticked by without a response from her. He shifted on his feet. She raised her eyebrows as she lifted her gaze over the top of the page, “Problem, Malfoy?”So, she wasn't totally oblivious to his presence. He smirked, “You look like you have this under control.”Hermione put her book down and glared at him, “As much as I would enjoy this more without you, you are not leaving me here to do all this work by myself. Besides, it'll only look bad on you when you don't know anything for tomorrow's class.”Draco sat down opposite her, “Jeeze, Granger, I was only kidding. I am assuming that this,” he indicated the second stack of books, “is the pile you want me to go through?”Her eyes narrowed, “Yes. I figured if we both make notes on important parts, we can swap them after so we both know everything.”Draco cocked his head, “And you trust me to find all the important parts?”“I don't have a choice,” she shrugged. “I can't get through all these books on my own before tomorrow.”“Sounds reasonable,” he conceded, pulling the first book off the stack. He caught her look of shock out of the corner of his eye, as he opened it. She must have been expecting him to put up more of a fight. Normally he would have, but he was rather interested in the topics they were looking into and he needed to work on not fighting with her all the time.By the time Draco had gotten through three of the books in his stack his neck was aching. He rolled his head around trying to relieve the tension. He paused when his eyes fell on Granger. She was on her fifth book, parchment sprawled beside her, notes scratched all over it. Her eyes were riveted to the page, practically glowing as they dashed across the words. She held her quill lightly between her fingers, the tip of it brushing back and forth against her lips, which moved soundlessly every few seconds as they repeated words her eyes came across.Draco couldn't take his eyes off her. Surely it was impossible for this to be the same girl he'd teased for years. Sure, Granger had always been kind of pretty, but watching her trail her quill across her lips was dead sexy. The fact she had no idea she was doing it only added to the appeal. She put the quill down to turn the page and Draco snapped out of his daze. He needed a break, if his mind was wandering like that. He stretched out his legs, nudging her under the table. Her eyes shot up to his.“So, your books have anything good in them?”She moved her feet away from his, “Yes, actually, there's this section here that's fascinating. It goes into detail about how protection spells can be woven into the mortar that binds the stones to make both the individual stones stronger and the structure as a whole, when all the mortar spells interact with one another to form a type of web.”He had to admit that sounded pretty cool.“What about yours?”“Most of what I have found so far are just simple protection spells, but the second book had an interesting couple chapters on statue animation.”“Like what McGonagall did last year?”“Yeah, it describes the process of embedding the enchantment into the stone, so that it lays dormant until summoned. It sounds tricky though. It said that most of the time the spells wear off and have to be reapplied every few years. There's only been a few cases, like Hogwarts, where the statues have lain dormant for hundreds of years and the enchantment has retained it's original strength.”“Which book was that in?”He chuckled. He should have known she'd want to read that one for herself. “Here,” he said handing her the book.“Thanks, I'll read it later. I want to get through the rest of these,” she said going back to her reading.Draco watched her for a few more seconds. That had been an almost normal conversation and she hadn't seemed suspicious at all. Not that he'd had anything mean to say anyway, he'd actually been interested in what she was saying for once. He smiled, maybe this wouldn't be as hard as he thought. The one thing he did know she liked was studying, if they could find common ground there it would open the door for further opportunities.---**---It felt like hours later when Hermione shut her last book. She looked over at Malfoy and found him almost done his last book too. Without disturbing him she started to get her things together. She had one small pile of books that had topics she wanted to read further on, she'd check those out and bring them back to the dorm. She stood and flicked her wand at the larger pile, following it to stretch her legs as they started to put themselves back on the shelves. She came to one of the windows at the back of the library. It looked out over the lake, like their common room did. It really was a spectacular view. The sun had gone down already, but it wasn't dark enough to be called night yet. She supposed this was the time people referred to as dusk, or twilight.Hermione heard foot steps behind her. She hadn't seen anyone else in the library so she assumed it was Malfoy.“Finished?” she asked without looking at him.“Yeah,” he said, sounding tired. She had just started to turn around when a crying noise made her freeze. Her eyes widened as she swept them around the dim room.“Granger-”“Shhhh, I heard it again!” she said, listening intently. He rolled his eyes, “Granger, there is no bloody baby-”“You really didn't hear anything?”“No, I didn't. Granger, maybe you should tell-”There it was again. She couldn't tell where it was coming from with him talking. Without thinking she stepped towards him and put her hand over his mouth. “Shut up, Malfoy,” she said, ignoring the shocked expression that crossed his face. She was surprised when he remained quiet. She didn't hear anything anymore, but she could feel his warm breath on her palm. His lips twitched against her skin, then something hot and wet slid across her hand. Gasping, she snatched her hand away, glaring at him in disbelief.“Did you just lick me?”He smirked, “It got you to move your hand, didn't it?”“That's just gross, Malfoy!” she snapped.“Well, I don't like being told to shut up, Granger,” he said crossing his arms.“I was trying to listen, but thanks to you I have no idea where that noise was coming from.”“There was no noise, Granger, how many times do I have to tell you that.”“I know what I heard.”He shook his head, “I was starting to suggest you tell someone, the Headmistress or Madam Pomfrey. It's probably not a good thing to be hearing things. Remember the year Potter heard voices? There ended up being a ruddy great snake prowling around the school wanting to kill people.”Hermione snorted, “I doubt there is a baby wandering around the school thirsting after your blood, Malfoy.”He scoffed, “I didn't think there was. I was leaning more towards the opinion that you might be going crazy.”“I am not going crazy, Malfoy!”“Isn't that what crazy people say?”“Oh, you are impossible!” she said, storming back to the table and scooping up her books.“Not a very good comeback, Granger!” he called after her.Hermione ignored him. She left the library, glad that she only had to walk down the hall a short ways to the portrait that housed her dorm. That was one nice thing about not being in Gryffindor tower. Her late night walks back from the library, loaded down with books, wouldn't be nearly so long. Giving the couple the password, she entered and went straight to her room. She put the books down on her bedside table, sitting down on the edge of the bed. She would never admit it to Malfoy, but she was uneasy. Hearing that cry again had troubled her. She didn't know where it was coming from, there was no reason at all for a baby to be inside Hogwarts. And why was she the only one that could hear it? Was she going crazy? Maybe she should tell someone. She was loath to take Malfoy's advice though and she didn't want McGonagall to think her Head duties were too much for her. She'd stay quiet about it, unless she heard it again, then she'd tell someone.---**---Draco stood where she'd left him in the library, even long after she'd gone. He didn't know whether to be amused or concerned that Granger already appeared to be going crazy. It was a little disconcerting that she had heard what she thought was a baby crying again. This morning it was easy to pass it off as the residual of some dream she'd been having. But this time? This time he had no explanation. Not that it was really his problem. It wasn't his fault she was hearing things. Pushing the thought from his mind he wandered back among the shelves. He stopped in one section, pulling a few books about charm location from the shelves. He knew they wouldn't hold much information pertaining to their new class, but he thought they might have something relevant. He'd take them to the common room and leave them on the table. Granger would probably want to look at them too, and it'd win him some brownie points. He paused as he pulled the last one he wanted down, an idea forming. There was another book he wanted to leave out for her to find. He wondered if they had that book here? It was a long shot, but he quickly walked to the section it might be in.After a quick perusal of the shelves, he knew he wasn't going to find what he wanted. It didn't really surprise him, it wasn't the sort of book the professors, or parents, would want the students having access to. He'd have to figure out a way of getting his copy from the manor. That would b interesting, he couldn't exactly ask his mother to mail it to him.Draco had just exited the library and was walking back to the Head's dorm when he heard it. A soft sniffling. Someone was crying. He froze. Had Granger been telling the truth? He spun in a circle. He was alone.Steadying his breathing Draco focused on the noise. He could still hear it. Granger had said she heard a baby crying. This wasn't a baby. He slowly turned his head until he could pin point a direction the sound was coming from. Walking softly he approached the sound. He came across a small figure, huddled against the door of one of the classrooms. Black hair spilled over the child's knees, which were drawn up to her face and her arms were wrapped around her legs.“Maya?”Bright blue, tear filled eyes looked up at him, “D-draco?”“Yeah, it's me,” he said softly. Her small body flew off the floor and hit him solidly, her arms wrapping around his waist as she buried her tear stained face in his shirt. Draco was almost as shocked as when she'd grabbed his hand on the platform. He couldn't remember the last time someone had hugged him. The stiff embraces his family used didn't count, those were formal and detached. Maya was hugging him hard enough to squeeze him in two, needing comfort from him and Draco didn't know what to do.She let out a muffled sob and his arms automatically went around her shoulders. He just stood like that, arms around her, feeling awkward, but it seemed to be what she needed. He didn't say anything, he couldn't think of anything to say, but it didn't seem to matter. After a few minutes her sobs calmed down and her grip around him relaxed. He realized it'd been late when he had left the library, which meant that now it was definitely past curfew. “Maya, what are you doing out here this late? You're supposed to be in your dorm, which is several floors below this one.”She stepped back, sniffing, “I got lost.”Draco raised his eyebrows, “You got lost? Maya, I know it's easy to do in this castle, especially on your first day, but your dorm is in the dungeons. You're four floors up from that.”Maya didn't say anything, she just looked at the floor and scuffed her toes, fresh tears sliding down her face.Draco grew concerned at her reaction. She shouldn't be starting to cry again just because he pointed out how far from Slytherin house she actually was, something else was going on.He gently took hold of her shoulders, bending down to look her in the eyes, “Maya, what's wrong?”“Oliver Guster was making fun of me. We were in charms class and I couldn't get my feather to do anything. Everyone else got theirs to twitch at the very least. Mine just sat there. Oliver said maybe I wasn't a witch after all...”Draco sighed as she trailed off, “Maya, you're not going to be able to do everything right away. Plenty of kids that come here don't get magic to work the first time they try it. There was a kid in my year, his name was Neville, who was abysmal at spells, but he always got them to work once he got enough practice.”“Neville Longbottom?” Maya asked, surprise registering in her eyes.Draco snorted, he'd forgotten the war had made Longbottom famous. “Yeah, he started out as one of the worst students. Everyone thought he was a lost cause. I hear even his grandmother thought he wasn't good enough to get into Hogwarts. Bet your grandmother didn't think that, did she?”“No,” she said slowly, “she knew I'd get in.”“See, you're already better off than he was, and he turned out okay. Got pretty good at doing magic even.”She gave him a weak smile, “I guess so...”“I know so,” he said. “Listen, if you need help with something just ask. The professors would be more than willing to help, or the prefects, even myself and Granger. And practice. Practice makes everything easier. It's your first day, everyone sucks on their first day, don't give up just yet.”This time he got a real smile, causing a triumphant feeling to seep into his chest.“Okay, let's get you back to Slytherin,” he said, turning to walk towards the stairs.A small hand slipped into his and he wondered why he didn't mind. In fact, why had he said all those things? Thinking them over he realized he'd actually done a decent job of comforting Maya. He'd said the right thing at the right time, and not had to plan out what he was saying before he did. It had almost seemed natural, to reassure her. That's what being Head Boy was about, he supposed, but he hadn't felt like the Head Boy when he'd been talking. She'd been upset and he'd wanted to help, plain and simple. He'd wanted to. Not because he was Head Boy, not because that was his job, just because he'd wanted to make her feel better. Why did he want to? What did it matter to him?Pushing those thoughts from his mind, he glanced down at the top of the black haired head walking beside him. “So, how did you end up so far from Slytherin?”“Stupid bloody staircases kept changing,” she grumbled, making him laugh.“They have a habit of doing that.”“I noticed.”He grinned. She really wasn't so bad, this kid. If nothing else, she amused him. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
