Chapter 4: A Secret Trip Then Off To School
The Malfoy family went back to their regular routine after the Diagon Alley trip. The boys had finished up the last of the school work they would be doing with the private tutor and had begun reading their school books. A few of the spells they practiced in private just to make sure they had them down and couldn’t be outshone during their first year at Hogwarts except by each other. Lucius went to the Ministry nearly every day and Narcissa had her ‘friends’ over every other day for tea time. The boys had their group of friends over nearly every day to play in the garden with, race brooms with, and of course practice spells with.
One day, about two weeks before the start of term, Lucius came home earlier than expected. Instead of going to his wife and talking to her about the news he had received he went straight to the boys’ bedrooms. He clearly heard Draco and Cygnus talking in the study that linked the two rooms, but also had a door in the hallway, so he entered that room, not knocking as it was a common area and not a private bedroom. The boys broke off their conversation and looked up at their father, the question in their eyes.
“Draco, I need to speak with Cygnus alone.” Lucius said, not bothering to greet either boy. Draco looked between his father and his twin and then slowly nodded and left the room.
“Is everything alright, Father?” Cygnus asked, confusion showing on his face.
“I’ve found a solution Cygnus.” Lucius was excited, his eyes alone showed this.
“A solution to what?” Cygnus’ confusion deepened.
“Your wand, Cygnus, your wand.”
“I’m not sure I follow. There isn’t anything wrong with my wand, Father.” Cygnus said.
“No, there isn’t anything wrong with your wand, but that wand…” Lucius paused, trying to find the words to say what was necessary.
“It’s dangerous because of its connection to The Dark Lord.” Cygnus guessed, looking down at the wand he had pulled the wand out of its holster.
“Yes, Cygnus. If anyone were to learn that that wand had a connection, in any way, to the Dark Lord, there’s no telling what they’ll do. Former Death Eaters who are only biding their time until His return will either view you as a threat, or as their Lord reborn. We, that is, your mother and I, want you to be safe, and to be as far from that sad business as possible. It’s the past now, and as Malfoys we must look to the future.” Lucius said softly, his hand resting lightly on Cygnus’ shoulder.
“What are we going to do, Father?” Cygnus looked up at the man he had known as his father for as long as he could remember, trusting him to do the right thing.
“You and I are going on a short trip to ask the help of a wand maker in Germany.” Lucius said. “I sent him an owl only a couple of days after we visited Diagon alley and he’s only just responded today that he would help as best her could, but we have to leave now.” Lucius got up, suddenly feeling energized as he went to his son’s wardrobe and pulled out a fur-lined cloak that he would need against the colder weather of Germany. “Side-along apparition as close to the man as we can get.” Lucius was talking to himself as Cygnus pulled on the cloak. Lucius made sure that Cygnus had his wand on him and then strode downstairs, Cygnus hurrying on his heels. Draco watched the pair go, but stayed upstairs. He didn’t want to be left out, but he knew that Father would have involved him if he could have.
“Lucius, what is going on?” Narcissa demanded, waiting for them at the bottom of the stairs.
“It will all be taken care of by the time we get back.” Lucius said, giving his wife a kiss on the cheek as he moved past her. Cygnus followed behind, not looking directly at his mother.
“What will be taken care of?” Narcissa asked, following them both, but Lucius ignored her, when he reached the point where he could apparate he took hold of Cygnus’ arm and Apparated them to just outside a Muggle house in Germany. Lucius led Cygnus up to the house where he knocked on the door. A Muggle woman answered and the two adults had a rapid-fire conversation in German before she allowed him in. He led his son over to the man sitting beside the fire.
“Lucius Malfoy.” The man chuckled. “Yes, even here your name reaches my ears. And you’ve brought one of the young ones with you. This is concerning the letter you sent me, then? Yes, I thought so. I will help if I can, but you should know that a bonded wizard will likely not be able to bond to another wand. But we can try. I have many left from the days when I created master wands.” The man didn’t give either Malfoy a chance to speak; he led them out of the Muggle home. They walked for quite a while; Gregorovitch ignored any attempt that Lucius made at asking questions. Finally they entered a shack in the middle of nowhere that was stacked with box upon box. “I stored them all here, so they wouldn’t get stolen out of my old store front. There are only a couple hundred left.” Gregorovitch looked at the young Malfoy and held out a hand for his wand.
Cygnus looked up at his father, who nodded, before handing the old man his wand. Cygnus didn’t really like or trust him, just like he didn’t really like or trust Ollivander. When the old man laughed, Cygnus jumped and looked at his father. Lucius looked startled as well.
“This wand, it is very powerful. His very young to have a wand so powerful. Well, I think I have just the thing.” Gregorovitch routed around in the boxes and came up with one that was particularly dusty and opened it revealing a beautiful redwood wand. The man held the box out to the boy and encouraged him to touch it. Cygnus paused briefly, but it was like he was compelled, he touched the wand and then lifted it out of the box, it felt just like his beautiful phoenix wand in his hand. It emitted sparks, and Cygnus laughed at the tingle that ran up his arm. “Very rare. Very powerful. Yes, indeed Malfoy, you have a strong one here.” The old man laughed again. “Now, leave, and never speak of this place to anyone.” He growled at Lucius. Lucius took Cygnus’s arm and Apparated them back to the Manor.
“Go upstairs Cygnus, you can tell your brother of your new wand, but do not speak of it again after today.” Lucius said in a commanding tone once they were safely inside the Manor again, and Cygnus nodded his head, running upstairs. He wanted to tell his brother all about the trip and found his twin waiting for him at the top of the stairs. The two set off, talking quickly about what had occurred. Lucius looked over at Narcissa, who hadn’t moved from beside the Apparition point. She was openly glaring at him, angry at him for taking one of her precious sons who-knew-where to do who-knew-what. “I’m sorry Cissa, I had to take Cygnus there and deal with this.”
“Where did you take him Lucius Malfoy?” Narcissa hissed at him angrily.
“To see Gregorovitch.” Lucius responded gravely. Narcissa’s face froze as she processed what her husband just said.
“To see… Gregorovitch? But Cygnus has a wand…” Narcissa was puzzled now.
“A wand with a link to the Dark Lord. A wand that could get him trouble with Death Eaters, with Dumbledore, a wand that could ruin the whole plan. We’ll put it in the family vault until it’s time to tell him the truth.” Lucius said. “I couldn’t stop thinking about that wand’s connection to the Dark Lord and a couple days after our shopping trip I decided to owl Gregorovitch. I finally convinced him to sell me a wand. He was so sure that Cygnus wouldn’t bond to any wand now that he had that wand.”
“But he did.” Narcissa said, relief beginning to seep into her features.
“He did, and now he’ll have one more protection. We can’t hide him forever, but we can protect him as long as possible, and when he’s seventeen we can tell him the truth and he can choose to finish the blood adoption, or he can choose to become Harry James Potter again. But we have to pray that Harry Potter will not be needed to save Wizarding World. That Dumbledore won’t allow him to come back.” Lucius said, reaching for his wife. Narcissa willingly went into her husband’s arms, and tried to not think of the future that their son may have to face.
Before they knew it the first of September had arrived and the boys were making sure they had everything before they were Apparated to the Platform.
“Draco did you…”
“Got it!”
“Okay.”
“Did you remember?”
“Made sure it was packed last night, what about?”
“Yeah, it’s in my trunk, you’ve got?”
“She’s in her cage!”
“So is he… Where did Mum and Dad go now?”
“I think they’re waiting…”
“Yeah, we should probably…”
Draco and Cygnus left their trunks in their rooms. The house-elves would sort them out and get them to the train station for them. Both trunks were identical custom models that their Father had had made for them. They contained four separate compartments each opened with a different lock on the front of the trunk. Two of the compartments were just big open spaces, meant to hold books and clothes, one had padded areas that were designed to hold their potion ingredients, the last one was where they could keep personal items like photos or journals so that their journals didn’t get mixed up with their school stuff on accident.
Lucius and Narcissa, waiting near the top of the stairs, rolled their eyes at one another as they heard the whole strange conversation. The boys’ finishing each other’s thoughts wasn’t as unnerving to the two adults as it had been when they were much younger.
“Are you finally ready to go?” Narcissa asked, to which both boys nodded. “Alright, before we head out I want to tell you that I love you, and you can owl me daily if you need to.” She kissed each boys cheek and then wiped off the small lipstick marks.
The two adults led the boys to the family Apparition point and Apparated them to Platform 9 ¾. The house-elf in charge of their school supplies made sure that everything was in place before Apparating it to the Platform as well, landing delicately next to the Malfoy family before being dismissed.
The family gathered together near the scarlet steam-engine and said their final good-byes. The boys had a half-hour until the train left and they got their trunks and owls safely on board, with help from Lucius, before heading down the corridor, peering into compartments as they went.
“Brother.” Cygnus called to Draco, who was a little ways behind him.
“Oh, good.” The two boys pulled their trunks into the empty compartment and helped each other store their trunks overhead. They settled in to wait, knowing their friends would find them.
Pansy found them first and they helped her store her trunk.
“We’ll all be in Slytherin, right?” The girls asked, looking at the boys imperiously.
“Of course,” Cygnus said, rolling his eyes.
“Who wants to be a Gryffindork?”
“Or a stupid Hufflepuff.”
“Or a Ravenclaw.”
“When you can be a snake.” Cygnus finished and the two boys hissed at each other before grinning at Pansy. Finally schooling their features into perfect Malfoy expressions.
Crabbe and Goyle had found them in the midst of this conversation and the two looked confused, which only made Draco and Cygnus chuckle.
Daphne Greengrass, Theo Nott, and Blaise Zabini eventually joined them, but split off to the compartment across the corridor. The friends settled in to enjoy the trip to Hogwarts as the train left the station, with random members of the group switching compartments to be able to talk to and visit with everyone. When the trolley lady came around everyone bought something. About halfway through the trip a bushy-haired girl rudely barged into their compartments.
“Have you seen a toad, only Neville’s…” The girl began but stopped as everyone in the compartment glared at her.
“Have you never heard of manners,” Draco sneered at her.
“And if you’re talking about Neville Longbottom.” Cygnus sneered at the obviously Muggleborn witch, no pureblood would burst in like that.
“Well, he loses everything, doesn’t he?” Draco finished, and then gestured for Goyle to close the compartment door. Which he did, right in the witch’s face.
“Really, who does she think she is, barging in like that?” Pansy scathed at the closed compartment door.
“Don’t even worry about her Pansy.” Draco sneered again at the closed door.
The five laughed and changed into their school robes as they were nearing the school.
Draco and Cygnus exchanged sneers at the half-giant who was calling for all the first years to join him, but followed the rest of their year reluctantly.
Cygnus and Draco made muttered comments to each other, keeping their voices low as they waiting for the sorting to begin once they had crossed the lake. Both boys had been impressed and awed by the sight of the lit-from-within castle when it came into view. They only quit whispering at a look from Severus.
The boys schooled their faces into indifference and gave smirks to each other while the Sorting Hat sang its song. Finally the sorting began and soon it was Draco’s turn and the boys touched hands, for luck. The Hat had barely touched it’s touched his head when it cried out “SLYTHERIN!” And then it was Cygnus’ turn.
“Cygnus Malfoy. What a lovely mind you have, so full of knowledge and cunning.” The hat purred in his ear. “But also full of courage, like a Gryffindor.”
Cygnus felt a look of disgust cross his face briefly.
“Don’t like Gryffindor, hmmm…” The Hat chuckled in his ear. “Then I guess we’ll have to place you in… SLYTHERIN!”
Cygnus smirked again, taking the hat off, and then strutted over to his brother.
The two boys bent their heads together, not paying attention to the rest of the Sorting.
“Stupid Hat wanted to put me in Gryffindor.” Cygnus said to his brother.
“What the bloody hell, why?” Draco looked scandalized; the idea of his brother, of any Malfoy, being put in Gryffindor was just horrible.
“Something about courage.” Cygnus said, rolling his eyes.
Draco smirked at Cygnus, glad his brother would share a home with him in the castle. He rolled his eyes at Dumbledore’s before feast ‘speech.’ The two boys fell to silence as they ate their dinner. Afterwards they ignored Dumbledore completely during his Start-of-Term speech.
“What classes do you think we have first tomorrow?” Cygnus asked excitedly.
“I hope we have Potions.” Draco said, stifling a yawn.
Cygnus poked his brother in his most ticklish spot, his ribs, and received a smack on the hand from Draco, who then poked him back. The two boys fought the giggles and kept poking each other at random throughout the speech. Finally, it was over and the twins stood and joined the line of first-years as they were ‘paraded through the castle,’ as Draco said, annoyed.
The boys stepped into their dorm and looked around at the six four poster beds, the six boys grinned at one another and then they all put on their pajamas. Cygnus looked at his bed and frowned and then straightened his spine and climbed between the sheets. He made a blissful noise and heard Draco echo it as he climbed into bed.
“Good night Brother.” Cygnus whispered.
“Good night Brother.” Draco returned. It was a ritual they had started when they were four or five, saying good night to each other just before going to bed.
Dumbledore felt uneasy. No letter had gone out to ‘Harry Potter.’ No child sporting the looks of the Potters had appeared this year. But Cygnus Malfoy… He had heard that name often since the boy had been about 18 months old. But he was sure he had never heard of the boy before them. He would keep an eye on the boy.
A/N: Here you go, Chapter 4. Woot, they made it to Hogwarts! Now to figure out how Cygnus is going to stop Quirrell. Or not stop him. I may make Dumbledore do all the work himself.
Chapter 5 is nearly done. So that should be coming in a few days to a week.
Also, I’m working on blankets for my babies for their Christmas presents and it’s important to me that those get done as well.
