Chapter Four: Albus
After they entered the house and Scorpius had pointed out the seeming time turner to Rose, he moved away to give her space to work. He wandered towards the couch and sat there watching her, waiting. It was like watching an artist. Rose pulled her wand out immediately and began performing wandless magic that he wouldn’t have even been able to begin to guess at. Al had told him three months ago that she had been officially awarded Unspeakable status. He had been over at Al’s house eating dinner with him and his wife, Lizzie, who had been in Slytherin with them at school. She and Al hadn’t started dating until after graduation, but Al had always been soft for her and Scorpius liked her. She was clever and loud, two things that helped her fit in perfectly with the Weasley/Potter bunch.
Scorpius came to London to eat with them every couple of months and the last time, right before he’d accepted the job from Harry, Al had told Scorpius that Rose’s dreams had finally come true. After five years of training, she was an Unspeakable. He wondered what it was like to not be able to really tell anyone what you did all day. He supposed it didn’t really matter if you lived in your office and never went home.
Rose’s parents had always been very close to her and he wanted to know how they liked her work hours. He would guess that they weren’t fans. What 22 year old woman worked the way that she seemed to? The way she had asked him if there was someone in his life … It made him wonder if he was the reason that she never went home. What if she missed him as much as he still missed her? What if she loved him as much as he still loved her? He supposed it wouldn’t much matter, except to make it difficult for them to work together. She had made her decision five years ago, and it wasn’t him.
Al walked a fine line between best friend and cousin and happened to be in the unique position of being the only person who knew about their two year long relationship. He tried to satisfy Scorpius’s curiosity even when he wouldn’t directly ask about Rose, but he also tried to respect Rose’s privacy and her right to have secrets from a man who was no longer part of her life.
They were at the Burrow in the Summer. The Potters and the Weasley’s were having dinner before the kids would be heading back to Hogwarts the next day. Scorpius was staying the night and heading to King’s Cross with Al in the morning, and it was the first time he had seen Rose since their first time together a week ago. He couldn’t get it out of his head how amazing it had felt to be inside of her, how close to her he felt, how extraordinary her body felt against his. Just thinking about it put him in a very embarrassing state which thankfully no one had seemed to notice.
It had been 20 long and amazing months since that night in the abandoned Charms room in 5th year. She was his, totally and completely his, and he was hers, but no one knew it. No one. They were painstakingly careful not to get caught snogging at Hogwarts in abandoned rooms and on the Holidays, they were business as usual, only sneaking away to be together a couple of times. It had never been as hard as it was today. He had imagine them being together so many times, but now in the wake of it actually happening it was impossible to be in the same room as her and not hold her hand or kiss her or feel her hair in his fingers. He wanted her. Bad.
Rose kept catching his eye, blushing, and looking away. They were acting like lovesick idiots. It was plain as day to him that they were, but apparently no one else thought anything unusual was going on. They made it through Quidditch and Chess and Dinner and then Rose went upstairs to grab a book and he couldn’t resist. He needed to sneak away and see her.
“Fancy a game of Exploding Snap?” He asked Al. “I’ll go grab my set?”
“Sure!” Al answered excitedly and Scorpius jumped up and had to restrain himself from bounding up the stairs after her. He went as quickly as he dared, following Rose. She was waiting for him in him and Al’s room.
“Hey You.” She said as he shut the door softly behind him.
“Hey Back.” He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms, kissing her eagerly. “This is the worst.”
“I know.” She whispered into his chest. “I didn’t think it would be so hard.”
“Me either.” He was relieved to hear that she agreed that it was harder to be around him and pretend that nothing had changed. “I just want to hold your hand or kiss you or push that crazy hair behind your ear.”
“I just want to slap Lily for staring at you like you are a glass of water and she’s been in the desert all summer.” He loved the way her lip pouted out as she said this, as she showed her claim on him.
“Ohhhh….” He smirked at her. “Jealous are we?”
“No! I am certainly not jealous. I just … well … she shouldn’t be looking at you like that.”
“It’s okay. I only have thirsty eyes for you.” He told her and then he pulled her even closer and finally one hand found it’s way into her flaming read hair. He licked at her lips and she parted them inviting him to tease her tongue as he snogged her silly. He felt her rub her hips against his and moan as she felt his excitement rub against her. “It won’t go away.” He murmured as he left her mouth and trailed hot, wet kisses down her neck.
“Scor, mate, I was thinking we could just play up here,” And then the door was opening. They leapt apart, but it was too late. Albus was standing in the doorway staring at Rose’s tousled hair and their red lips. “What the bloody hell is going on?” Rose rushed over the door, pulled him in, and shut it.
“SHHHHHH!” She hissed as Al started at her indignantly.
“Are you seriously shushing me? I’m not the one up here having secret snog sessions! Since when do you two snog? What the bloody hell is going on?”
“OH MERLIN ALBUS!” Rose said disgruntled, as if it was his fault he had walked on them snogging, which Scorpius was quite all right with, because it had been him that forgot to lock the door and he wasn’t going to invite her temper on himself.
“Just sit down. Both of you.” He stepped in and pulled Rose to his bed with him, making her sit down. Al sat across from them on his own bed.
“Ok, I sat down, now what the bloody hell is going on?” He crossed his arms and stared at them.
“Rose and I …” He looked at her and he didn’t know what to describe them as. He loved her. She loved him. They had told each other as much many times, but no one else knew. What did that qualify as?
“Are snogging in secret? Oh Lord! You’re not some sort of sick shag buddies or something are you? That is just … not right … oh …”
“NO!” Rose said, probably louder than she should have.
“I love her.” Scorpius said and he watched her face. She smiled at him and leaned in to kiss his cheek.
“You LOVE her?” Albus asked indignantly. This was clearly the very last response he had expected.
“And I love him back.” She said and actual giggled. He understood why. It was crazy to be saying this in front of someone else. It was liberating and exciting.
“Love.” Al stared at them blankly, trying to understand. “How long has this been going on?”
“Uhh…” Rose glanced at him, he supposed trying to decide if they should tell Al how long they had been lying to him. “Before Christmas...”
She was still speaking, but Albus broke in. “Eight months and you didn’t tell me?”
“Of fifth year.” Scorpius finished for Rose and Al’s jaw dropped.
“You are the worst friends ever.”
“Al! I’m so sorry.” Rose moved from his bed to Al’s and put her hand on his. “I can’t tell Dad. He won’t understand.”
“That’s almost two years! And you love each other? I feel like you're going to have to tell him eventually.” Rose avoided my gaze at these words. I’d been after her for ages to tell Ron. It was the only thing we consistently fought about.
"Believe me, I hear that from Scor all the time." She looked sad as she said it and I know she wished that she could tell her Dad, but she has convinced herself that it's impossible.
"Scor? Since when do you call him Scor? I can't believe this. I thought we were friends!"
"Al! We are friends, we both love you so much and we've talked about telling you a lot." She meant this to reassure him, but he just looked more offended.
"But you didn't trust me? Didn't want to risk me, what? Telling Uncle Ron? No bloody way I want to be anywhere near him when he finds out the two of you have been doing god know what behind his back for almost two bloody years!" I cringe as he says this, knowing it's only going to make it harder for me to argue that we need to tell him. Al is simply helping add merit to Rose's insistence that it would be the worst thing in the world.
"I'm sorry, Al. I wanted to tell you so many times. We do trust you, we just thought it was best not to tell anyone."
"He's being nice, Al. Scorpius wanted to tell you. I didn't want anyone to know. I love him so much," She looked at me as she said this. "But Dad still talks about how I need to best him at everything and how rotten the Malfoys are. I know this would devastate him. He would never accept Scorpius or get to know him the way I have, for who he is and not who his family is. I know you understand because you are his best friend and you know him better than anyone."
"Well apparently not! I didn't even know he was seeing you!" His words were still upset and moaning, but his arms were uncrossed and his tone had changed. He understood. He wasn't happy about it, but he was accepting it. "This is crazy!"
"Yea, it is." Rose smiled and she looked as happy as he felt that Albus was calming down.
"How did this even start?"
"I picked a fight and snogged her senseless to prove a point." I laughed, remembering her insistence that they were breaking the rules.
"Of course." Al rolled his eyes. "What point?"
"That breaking the rules can be fun." I smirked and Rose blushed. "We've become quite good at breaking the rules." I said with a grin.
"Oh, puke! I don't want to know what rules you've been breaking with Rose!"
"We really are so sorry, Al." Rose said again and she hugged him. He half heartedly hugged her back mumbling something under his breath about traitors.
After Al knew, Scorpius told him nearly everything about their relationship. The good and the bad. The bad was mostly them arguing about telling people and Al was entirely on Scorpius' side when it came to that issue, believing that prolonging the inevitable would only make it worse when it eventually came out. Neither of them knew that Rose never intended to tell anyone until the night she turned down his proposal.
After that, Al pushed him to see other people and move on from Rose, but Scorpius didn't really listen. He went on unwanted blind dates with some of Al and Lizzie's friends, but that was about it. He even shagged a couple of them who made it clear that they didn't want anything more from him. It had been a release but it hadn’t been anything like being with Rose.
According to Al, Rose hadn't had anyone serious in her life either. She had brought Frank Longbottom to Al and Lizzie's wedding where Scorpius had stayed as far away from her as possible and then left early. That night he lay awake in his bed, alone, wondering if Frank went home with her. The thought of someone other than him touching her made his skin crawl.
"I'm pretty sure this is active." Rose cut into his thoughts, holding the time turner in her hands. "And that he made it himself." She seemed to be in awe of this man. "I've gotten so close, but I've never made one that is fully functional." She seemed to remember then that he could hear her and she looked up at him. "I should not have said that."
"I didn't hear anything." He told her, standing to walk back over to her. "What does this mean?"
"It means that the Department of Mysteries will take over from here."
"Are you serious? You're cutting me out?"
"It’s my job. It's why Harry called us in. This is what I do." She seemed genuinely surprised that he was upset.
"You come into the first good case I've had since I became an Auror and steal it? Sounds like a shitty job!"
"What did you think was going to happen Scorpius? I was going to find an incredibly sensitive, dangerous, and illegal object dealing with time travel and let you lot handle it? This is what our Department exists for. We handle the big ones. Death, Space, Thought, Time, and ..." She suddenly stopped talking.
"And Love? That's laughable." His blood was boiling. He had just come back, just thought he was safe and BOOM here she comes into his life to steal everything. Again.
"That we study it? Love is the strongest power there is." She looked confused as she knew that he would know this, being Al's best friends and hearing the stories from Harry.
"No, that they let you study it." As soon as he said it, he regretted it but there was no taking it back and he couldn't apologize. He just couldn't bring himself to do it.
Her face fell instantly. He could tell he had hurt her, badly, but he was so frustrated and angry that he didn't care. "I guess I'll leave you to your investigation." He told her.
"Scorpius!" She exclaimed, but it was too late. He was already disapparating back to the Ministry.
