When Lord Voldemort showed up in person at the Ministry of Magic that awful night, people had no other choice than finally take his return for a fact. They understood they were on a threshold of a war that would involve the whole wizard world.
At the Ministry, Rufus Scrimgeour replaced Fudge as the Minister of Magic. The wizard world was on the verge on war and Scrimgeour seemed to care only for the Ministry’s reputation. As an Obliviator, Lilla had more work than ever. Wizards and witches in her department tried desperately to erase the memory of Muggles who witnessed the magical activity, unexplainable deaths or catastrophes. And there were many. Many catastrophes, many calamities and even more Muggles on whom they had to use the Obliviate spell.
Lilla was furious. She despised the fact that the Ministry was still desperately trying to conceal the fact that even the Minister was afraid and no one was sure what to do. Instead, they kept on pretending that the Ministry was dealing perfectly well with the situation, that everything was under control. Fuck, Scrimgeour was even trying to use Harry for this damn propaganda. She hated it that it was just a cover-up for the shitty job of the Ministry. Random imprisonments happened on a daily basis, only to try to convince people that the Ministry was doing something. The Ministry had literally been doing nothing to stop the Death Eaters, focusing on holding on to the vestigial hope of keeping their reputation and pretending they were all doing a great job. The only reason that she was still there was that she was needed at the centre of events, in order to bring reports to the Order.
And again, everything changed for much worse when Voldemort and his Death Eaters had taken over the Ministry, the event known as the Fall. Rufus Scrimgeour had been killed and people had more reason than ever to be afraid.
She remembered the exact moment when she had found out about it.
Lilla was on one of the missions for the Order. Her task was to convince other magical creatures to join wizards in fighting Voldemort. She was about to ensure them that in this war they were all on the same side. She knew that Remus had already tried to talk other werewolves into it, but that was futile effort. Many magical creatures despised wizards for what they had done to them. On one hand, Lilla was not surprised. But now that everything was at stake there was no place for prejudices and inveterate rancour. This pride could get them all killed one day.
That day she was wandering through the forest, looking for centaurs. It had been said that this particular herd shared a little bit less animosity towards wizards than any other so it was worth trying, at least. Members of the Order believed that she had best chances of getting to them. Maybe they would be more prone to talk to her if they found out how unusual she was. That she was a magical creature herself.
Lucky or not, this task made her unable to take part in moving Harry from his so-called house at Privet Drive to the Burrow. It also prevented her from attending the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour. At first, she had been furious. But then, it turned out that it was nothing compared to what the others had experienced.
She never had a chance to find the centaurs.
Wandering through the woods, she saw an unexpected flash of light, taking a form of silver mist that stopped right in front of her eyes.
A Patronus.
Arnold Peasegood’s voice sounded in the forest.
‘The Ministry has been taken over. Death Eaters are here. Don’t come back. Be careful.’
And then the mist dispersed.
Her thoughts immediately ran to Harry and the wedding at the Burrow.
Panic flooded her mind. Adrenaline rushed through her veins. Her instinct told her that if Death Eaters were at the Ministry, they had most probably found out about the members of the Order hiding at the Burrow.
She shoot up into the sky, her wings moving so frantically that her back began to ache.
Let them all be safe, let them all be safe – she prayed.
When she reached the Burrow, she understood she was too late. The wedding tent was on fire.
She descended quickly, wand ready.
But it was already over.
Nobody got hurt. A blessing in disguise.
Death Eaters were gone. But so was Harry.
She found out that it was only thanks to Kingsley Shackelbolt’s warning that they had enough time to guard themselves or find cover. Molly Weasley told Lilla that she had seen Harry, Hermione and Ron run away together, but later she had lost sight of them. Lilla could see how worried the woman was. Some years earlier she would have easily found words of comfort. But right then, she had no idea what to say. So she said nothing. And left.
It took her too long to realize where Harry could be hiding. She flew to the only place where Harry felt safe. The only place where they had both felt safe a couple of years ago. Now it was haunted with memories.
She landed on Grimmauld Place, hiding in the shadows. When she was sure no one was watching, she entered Sirius’ house.
When she stepped through the threshold, memories flooded her mind like a tsunami. She felt a cold hand of despair holding her heart in an iron grip. She exhaled deeply, breathing in the smell of the house. She forced the corners of her mouth to rise.
Smile, remember?
She searched the whole house but all she could find was dust, spider webs, and memories. She was too late. Harry, Hermione and Ron had already been gone.
She tried to find them, she really did. But it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Being on the run, being persecuted by Voldemort’s minions didn’t make it any easier. She was considered a blood-traitor because she joined the Order and opposed prejudices based on blood purity. So did Sirius and many others around her. Anyway, now people from the Ministry, the place she had once regarded as her second home, were hunting her, so she had to be on the run.
One day, however, when she was sneaking through the shadows, she overheard two wizards talking in hushed voices about groups of Muggle-borns hiding in the Forest of Dean. It was a pathetic try to follow this lead, but she had no better option. She didn’t tell anyone where she was going, she decided to set off on her own. All members of the Order had their families, jobs, and duties in the outside world. Lilla didn’t have to pretend any longer. She was an outlaw and had nothing to lose. There was no heroism behind her decision, she just felt it would be better if she executed her plan alone. A burden all Order members had to carry was already beyond heavy. Besides, there was still the promise she had made, the promise that kept her going through all these harsh years. She also felt it was her duty to protect not only Harry, but Hermione – a Muggle-born, and Ron – a blood traitor as well.
It was pure luck Lilla spotted them in the woods.
Relief overflowed her and her smile widened, when she saw Harry’s thin figure and black dishevelled mop, next to Hermione’s bushy hair and Ron’s freckled countenance. Lilla laughed in relief, hugging all of them so close as if she wanted to crack their ribs.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were clearly up to something but all she was told was that Dumbledore had given them a task that they were not allowed to talk about to anyone, even those they trusted. Lilla respected that. She didn’t inquire, effacing herself whenever the three of them wanted to talk in private. All she knew was that this task required much commitment and probably whole resources of strength, bravery and cleverness they had. Lilla offered herself to go with them wherever they were heading, just to help and do her best to keep them safe. She just wanted to protect them, to make sure that Harry lives. And although they didn’t say that, they seemed grateful that they could had one friendly face beside.
