Hermione had been sitting by her window for a while now. Harry and Ron had gone to bed after their talk and so had she, except sleep seemed to be evading her. So she decided to read a little in the moonlight by her window. The other girls were sleeping soundly as well. Which she didn’t mind, she didn’t want to talk to any of them right now anyways. She looked up from her book, admiring the view. It was similar to the view from the astronomy tower. The lake, the moon and the dark forest. Just as it always had been and just the way it would always be. If only things would stay the same too. She thought back of the ‘good old days’. Ron and Harry would just be normal kids, well magical normal kids, at school. Dealing with minor stuff like girls and homework. As Hermione thought about it, they never had much normal days. Even in first year, they had to battle Voldemort. Now, everything had changed. She and Ron were in a weird place and Harry was torn between the both of them. Draco Malfoy, she didn’t even want to get started on him. She was kissing him these days! If the guys knew about this, she (and he) would be on the receiving end of insults, worried looks and maybe even jinxes. She had never in her entire life felt so alone.
Hermione was ripped from her thoughts as something hit her window. She peered out of her window but she didn’t see anything. Just like that, another tap. Hermione furrowed her brow, but still, nothing. And then, another tap, just like someone was throwing rocks at her window. This couldn’t be the case because they were way to far from the ground. Hermione opened her window and leaned out, looking in the distance to see who or what was tapping her window. “Up here, Granger” a voice came from above her window. It made the hair at the back of her neck stand up. She looked up at him. He was floating in the sky on his broom, his hair waving in the wind. “What are you doing here, Malfoy?” she whispered.
“I came to talk to you bushblood” He smirked.
“What now?” she raised one eyebrow. He was slurring his words.
“Mudhead, wait no” he laughed. Hermione had never seen him laugh, not really.
“You’re drunk!” she hissed.
“I might have had one drink” he stated.
“Go to bed Malfoy” she ordered.
“You have to come with me, I want to talk to you” he said.
“I’m noting coming to your dorm, Malfoy, and I’m not flying on the back of a drunk persons broom” she whispered.
“You have to, or I’ll wake your boytoys and tell them you kissed me!” he smiled.
“You kissed me!” he answered, a little louder than she would’ve liked. She heard the other girls stir in their sleep.
“Weasel! Scarhead!” He started yelling.
“Shut up! Malfoy! Seriously!” she hissed.
“I’ll shut up if you come with, and I’m not taking you to my dorm, duh” he whispered.
“Fine, but only for a minute and you’ll deliver me back here, quietly!” she stated.
“yes ma’am” he said, as he made a military greeting with his hand.
He held out his hand to help her get on the back of his broom. But she ignored it and got up on her own. Terrified out of her wits. “You better grab on, Granger” he said. “I’ll manage” she spat. Malfoy started accelerating away from the castle. Hermione shrieked and grabbed Malfoy’s waist. “I told you” he said. They weren’t flying straight at all and Hermione was convinced that hey both wouldn’t make it out alive. “Where are we going?” she asked. “You’ll see!” he shouted back. He started a descend that seemed a little too steep for Hermione’s taste. She bit her lip and closed her eyes shut until the wind stopped howling in her ears. “Where here, would you mind getting off?” he said. Hermione opened her eyes and saw that they were at a clearing in the dark forest. It was beautiful. There was a small gazebo in the centre. It looked like it had been abandoned years ago though. The wooden structure was still there, it had been reclaimed by nature. A beautiful wisteria had grown through the structure. It’s purple flowers hanging from the roof. The building itself was white and in the centre stood a white bench. “How did you find this place?” she asked, gasping. “It’s my spot. I found it in first year, it’s the only place I can be alone.” He said, seemingly sober all of a sudden. Hermione was surprised at his sudden open answer. He walked to the gazebo and she followed. He sat down on the bench and she did the same. They sat there for a little while, just staring into the forest. It wasn’t dark at all, the moon was shining through the clouds. It was peaceful.
“Why did you bring me here?” She asked as she looked at him. He didn’t turn to look at her as he answered.
“I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t want to be alone and you just popped into my head.” He said, staring straight ahead.
“Also, I am drunk” he smirked.
“Well, it’s beautiful here.” She said. She deliberately didn’t ask any other questions. She didn’t want to know anything more. He felt like he had when she found him in the room of requirement. Vulnerable and scared, and she felt exactly the same way. They were on different ends of this war that was coming. She would fight against him at some point, probably. But at this very moment, in this very place, she didn’t seem to care. She had to admit to herself that she, too, was feeling lonely and she didn’t want to be alone either. “It’s a pity that there aren’t any animals around” She finally whispered. He took out his wand and cast a spell. White light came out of his wand and suddenly there was a great big wolf standing in front of her, made of white light. Her eyes grew big. “You can cast a full body patronus charm?” she asked, genuinely amazed. “I’ve only recently learned. Before, I could only cast shields, but I finally found a memory worth of the charm” he said. Hermione smiled. It was beautiful. She took her wand and cast hers. The small otter ran around the forest, annoying the big wolf. She had a pool of memories to draw from, and she felt a pit in her stomach when she realized Draco so far only had one. “How did everything get so complicated?” he sighed. Hermione looked at him, he looked so broken.
“It has been complicated long before we were born” she answered. He looked at her. His beautiful grey eyes catching hers.
“It’s not fair that we should be burdened by something that happened so long ago” Hermione nodded.
“No, it’s not” she stated.
“It will be over soon” he said, cryptically. She didn’t want to answer, she didn’t want to ask for something she didn’t want to know. It was weird, they had never gone this long without fighting. Maybe it was because both were vulnerable. Her thoughts were interrupted when his fingers entwined with hers. She turned to look at him again. “Thank you” he said.
“For what?” she asked.
“For coming with me” he whispered.
“Well, you sort of forced me” she laughed. He smiled at her. He was beautiful when he smiled, though he didn’t do so very often. Maybe he didn’t have a lot of reasons to.
“Yeah, well I guess I did” he smirked.
“I don’t mind being here, you know” she said, squeezing his hand.
“Neither do I”
The next morning, Hermione woke up feeling very strange. Draco had delivered her to her window as he promised. They had spent a couple of hours just sitting in the gazebo, not talking, not doing anything really. But somehow, though it all, she had felt safe, she felt like she belonged there. Exactly there, at that place, at that time, with him. She put on her robes and went downstairs, where Harry and Ron were waiting for her. “Ready for breakfast?” Ron asked. Hermione nodded and they went downstairs.
As Ron was diving into his breakfast, Hermione noticed that a girl entering the great hall. Katie Bell.
