Severus looked up as 2 more owls flew towards the head table. And landed in front of him. He took the letters and fed the owls before heading to find Hermione. They were addressed to the both of them. He found her in his personal lab. “These also just came.”
Hermione opened the letters and read them. “Both patents were approved! I can't believe this!” She jumped up and gave him a hug. “This is amazing!”
Severus chuckled as she grinned and reread the letters. “I had it set up to go directly into our vaults. It eliminates the need for us to go to the bank and do it ourselves.”
“Thank you Severus.” She kissed his cheek and smiled. “I really do appreciate it.”
“You earned it.” He grinned as she sat back down. “Now, a question. Would you like to come to Hogsmeade tomorrow to restock the potions stores?” He held up a hand. “Remember that you just recently stopped using the cane. It is a lot of walking.”
“Of course I will go!” She smiled and patted his arm. “I will take my cane just in case since it will be farther than I have walked so far. That way you don't have to worry.”
“I will be there too if needed.” He smiled at her. “I will make sure you get anything else you may need while we are there.”
“I do have to get a few things for my costume.” She grinned at him. “It should only take a few minutes because it's already ordered. I just need to pick it up. You sure you don't want to tell me what your is?”
He shook his head. “You will find out when I arrive to walk you to the dance.” He grinned. “I am aiming to shock everyone, including the staff. If it makes you feel any better, I will wait outside the store while you go in.”
“Me too.” She looked at him calculatingly. “I will be fine with your waiting outside.” She shrugged. “The only thing I worry about is scaring off some of my friends.”
Severus looked at her strangely. “I just hope Albus doesn't have a heart attack at mine.” He frowned when she began to rub her leg. “Is it bothering you?” When she nodded, he shook his head.”That's why you shouldn't have run out of the hall earlier. Go relax with that bath mixture I gave you. It will relax the muscles.”
“I will. I think I will also do that before going to Hogsmeade tomorrow too.” When he nodded, she finished what she was doing and headed for the door. He was right behind her and heading for his classroom. “I guess I will see you later then Severus.” He nodded and turned towards his classroom as she headed for the steps.
The following morning, Hermione was walking with Severus to Hogsmeade. She was using her cane so it wouldn't be too much on her leg. “Where did you want to go first?” She looked up to see him watching her walk. “My leg is fine for now.” She smiled at him. “Soaking it this morning helped.”
“That's good.” He smiled and looked forward again. “I was thinking of going to the Apothecary first. Get that out of the way. I'm sure you want to go to the bookstore as well.” She nodded as they reached town and headed for the apothecary. “I ordered the stuff yesterday so it should all be ready. Just go get anything you want or need.” He opened the door for her and followed her in, heading for the items he personally wanted. After a few other stops and lunch, they went to get Hermione's costume pieces. They then met up with the other professors and students to head back. He noticed her falling back and slowed down to walk with her. She was grimacing. “It is starting to hurt now isn't it?”
She nodded and grimaced again. “It is getting worse and even the cane isn't helping as much.” She held up a hand and leaned on a tree. “Just give me a couple minutes.” She looked up to see a worried expression cross his face. “It's fine, really.”
“Bollocks. It's bleeding again.” He shook his head and scooped her up. “You are shaking like a leaf in the wind.” He carried her the rest of the way to the school and straight to the hospital wing. “Poppy! It's bleeding.” He set her down on the nearest cot. “I think you may have overdone it with all the walking today.”
Poppy nodded as he turned away so she could take off Hermione's pants to check and heal the leg. She smiled when he pulled a screen around the bed for privacy. “He is right, you overdid it.” She magically stitched up the wound. “He did an excellent job of dealing with the curse but being dark magic, it will still give you some trouble when you overdo it. He should have warned you.”
Hermione shook her head when he snorted in amusement. “He did. It was my choice though. At least I took the cane. It would have been much worse.” When the medi-witch nodded in agreement, she laughed. “I think he's acting like my parents whenever I got hurt when I was little.” She winked at the woman and looked to where his shadow was seen. “Like a protective, hovering bat.”
Severus growled as Poppy pulled back the screen. “You are my apprentice, it is my responsibility to make sure you are ok.” He glared when they both snickered. “Women.” He shook his head. “Are you ready to go back to the lab?”
“No walking without the cane and only in short distances.” Poppy held up a hand. “I want you to rest for a couple days. When in class, make sure you are sitting.”
Severus nodded. “Eat in your rooms or I will come get you and carry you to the staff entrance of the hall.” He glared at her when she frowned. “She just stitched you up, you don't want to aggravate it any more than it already is.”
“Fine.” She sighed and stood up so he could pick her up. “I'm beginning to think you like being my chauffeur.” She smirked at him before turning to Poppy. “I guess I will see you later. I think I will eat my next meal in my rooms.” She saw the woman nod as Severus carried her to her rooms. Once inside, he set her down. “I think I will prop up my leg for a bit. “Do you want to join me for supper?”
He nodded. “I will join you and I will bring your potions for the leg.” He smiled as she nodded and turned to the door. “I will see you then.”
Hermione followed Poppy and Severus's orders and was feeling better by the time Halloween arrived. She was excited about her costume but frowned as she thought about dancing. Without Harry, Draco, or Neville there, she doubted anyone would dance with her. She looked up as she set her potion to stew. “Anything I can do while this stews?” She looked up at the man stirring a potion next to her.
“Not really. Everything else is done.” He looked up and saw her frown. “What's wrong?”
“Oh, just thinking about the dance. Most of the people I used to dance with are gone. I don't know that anyone is left to dance with except for Ginny and Luna.” She shrugged. “Maybe Colin or a couple of the others from the DA will. I don't even know if my leg could handle many dances. I just hate feeling like a third wheel.”
Severus chuckled and finished stirring his potion before turning off the flame and letting it cool. “Believe it or not, as an apprentice, you have the staff to dance with as well. Remus and Albus I'm sure will dance with you. As will I since I am one of your masters.” He shrugged at her look. “If you recall, I have in the past. Minerva sees to it that I fulfill all parts of my being a professor here.” He smirked at her. “Whether you believe it or not, she is the one who really rules the staff.”
Hermione laughed. “I can believe it.” She nodded and laughed again, covering her mouth as she snorted at a mental image of the woman. She shook her head to get rid of it. “That was just wrong.”
She looked up and saw his raised brow. “Oh nothing, it was just a mental image of Minerva. Not one I could really see her doing but it just popped in my mind.”
Severus crossed his arms and sat down facing her. “If you laughed that hard at it, I must know what it was. Maybe I could use it to have some fun with her next time she tries to pull one over on me.” He smirked wickedly. “Besides, it's always fun to rile her up.”
Hermione smirked and nodded. “Can you go in and see it? I don't think I could tell you without laughing.” She giggled lightly at the thought. When he nodded and pulled out his wand, she focused on it and nodded.
“Legillimens.” He entered her mind and was taken immediately to her thought of Minerva. What he saw had him pulling back with wide eyes and a hand covering his mouth as he too laughed. “That was...” He shook his head. “Interesting.” They both looked up as said woman knocked on the open door. He looked a Hermione and they both started laughing again. He waved the woman in.
Minerva looked at them warily. “I feel I am intruding on something.” When they shook their heads, she sighed. “Well, I just wanted to stop by and let you know that one of your students has just earned detention Severus. He was physically picking on Miss Lovegood for no reason other than she is wearing some odd earrings she made. She retaliated with a full body boiling hex.” She smirked. “He is in the Infirmary and Poppy refuses to do more than soothe the boils. He wants you to come heal him.”
Severus shook his head. “I'm sure I know who it is. I have talked to him about it many times before. I told her to retaliate and I won't punish her for it.” He smirked at the surprised woman. “He needs to learn not to tease others, especially physically if it's a female. They can be pretty ruthless.” He caught Hermione's eye and grinned when she giggled. “I will talk to him again. He will remain in the Infirmary until the spell wears off on its own.”
Minerva nodded and looked at Hermione. “Do I even want to know?” When the girl snorted and shook her head, she sighed. “You are starting to rub off on her too much Severus. You and Remus both.” This then set Severus off in a chuckling fit.
“I will tell you later Minnie.” Severus grinned at her. “Believe me, you might not want to say that after I tell you what Miss Granger thought up.” He smirked when the girl glared at him. “Don't glare at me, you are the one who thought of it!” He laughed when she huffed.
“Anyways, I will see you two at dinner.” Minerva shook her head as she left. “Such a strange generation.”
Hermione sighed as she went back to her potion, stirring it before removing it from the fire to cool. As she bottled it, she thought back to the dance. “What dances do the staff members know?” She finished bottling her potion and turned to see him doing the same to his.
Severus smirked as he finished bottling his potion and began to carry them to the stock room. “It depends on the person. I was raised with Slytherins so I know most of the slower ballroom dances. Minerva knows some Scottish dances and many traditional ones. Remus, I believe, knows some more of the faster ones thanks to Lily, James, and Sirius.” He shrugged. “I don't know what other dances the others know. All of us know the traditional dances though.”
Hermione nodded. “That's good then.” She smirked when he raised a brow at her. “I know most of the slower ballroom dances. They are pretty much what the traditional dances are. I started ballroom lessons after fourth year.” She grinned at him. “My teacher said I was a natural.”
Severus shook his head. “Why am I not surprised?” He finished putting their potions away and motioned to the door. “I will have the detention students clean the cauldrons tonight. Why don't I walk you to your rooms.”
“Why thank you Mr. Snape!” She smirked as he shook his head. She put her outer robes back on and headed out the door. “You can floo back to your rooms if you want to save time.” He nodded and did just that while she went to change for supper. He took the floo back to her rooms to walk her to dinner.
The next day, the entire school was in a tizzy getting ready for the dance. Hermione smiled as she spelled her flower wreath into place on her head. She then picked up a sheath of wheat and a torch. “Now to wait.” She checked her image once more and smiled. Her deep red, ankle length Grecian robes were spelled to look like she was on fire. “Perfect.” She grinned when she heard a knock. “Come in!” She headed out to her sitting room and grinned.
Severus closed the door and turned to her before freezing. He laughed when he came to his senses. “Well, if you are Persephone then that makes 2 times we have matched without intention.” He pulled his trident from his pocket and re-sized it. His robes were black and Grecian like hers and were also spelled to look like they were on Fire.
“Hades I presume?” She laughed when he nodded. “Well then, I'd say we should make this a regular occurrence while I'm apprenticing. Albus will find it hard to choose which is better.” She smirked wickedly. “Maybe we can tie and he will have to get us both a bottle of wine.”
Severus laughed. “That sounds like a very Slytherin idea to me. I like it.” He held out his arm. “Shall we?” As they headed for the Great Hall, he looked her over. “I think the goddess suits you, though so would Athena.”
“I had thought about that but I'm not too crafty. Persephone fits me better I think.” She grinned at him. “So, how shall we enter?”
Severus laughed wickedly. “If you can manage to laugh like Bellatrix, I have a plan.” When she blushed, he looked at her. “What?”
“I can imitate her perfectly. Harry dared me to try it in case we ever had to impersonate any of them.” She flushed. “Even Draco said I sounded just like her.” She shrugged. “Only the DA knows about it though.”
Severus laughed as they neared the hall. “this may scare the hell out of them.” When she laughed, he shook his head. “Are you ready?” He cracked the door open and turned to look at her. When she nodded, he murmured a spell to make it look like the door was on fire. He then motioned her to laugh. He was shocked when she smirked and let out an evil sounding laugh before they stepped through the door. Inwardly, he smirked when the nearest students scrambled away from them.
“Bloody hell!” The students scrambled away as they walked through the room and up to Albus and Minerva. When they reached the Headmaster, the man doubled over laughing.
Minerva shook her head and grinned at them. “Amazing entrance. I dare say that a number of students may have a renewed fear of you Severus. Though some may now fear you Hermione. That sounded just like Bellatrix.”
“That was the point. Only the DA knew I could do that because we had planned on other options and one was to impersonate some of the death eaters. Draco said I sounded exactly like her.” Hermione smirked at them. “Severus said he had a plan if I could do an evil laugh.”
Severus shook his head as he looked around. “A laugh worthy of Persephone I must say.”
“And an entrance worthy of Hades.” Hermione laughed at him before turning to the two adults. “And again, not even planned until now. While I am here as an apprentice, we will be working together for our costumes.”
Remus sighed as he joined them. “Well, there goes my plan to win a bottle of wine.” He laughed as they shrugged. “I think Minnie and I were in the running since our king here is the one offering the wine.” He looked them over. “Though I would like to know which of you wins.”
Albus shook his head.”I am afraid I may have to buy 2 bottles of wine this year.” He smiled at them. “But if you win next year, you will have to share the bottle.” He nodded when they laughed. “Now, why don't you three go enjoy yourselves.” He waved them off as he went to do a round of checks.
Throughout the evening, Hermione danced with her friends from the DA, as well as Remus, Flitwick, and Albus. What surprised many people was the fact that Severus danced with her more than once. She surprised herself by looking forward to those dances. He was correct in saying he knew the slower dances. She felt them flow through the dancing. During the last dance of the night, she smiled at him. “I think you shocked everyone tonight. I'd say your plan to shock them all has worked.”
He smirked. “Indeed.” As the dance ended, Severus led her over to get their things. He jumped when he saw a flame come right behind him and shook his head as she blushed. “Don't startle me like that.”
Hermione laughed. “Sorry, at least it's not real flames.” She put the flame out on her torch. They had just stepped through the door to the hall when she stumbled. She found herself in his arms before she could fall. “Thanks.” She winced as she went to take another step. “I think I just twisted my ankle. Though my leg is starting to spasm.” She winced again.
He sighed and handed her his trident before scooping her up. “Come on, I have some salve in my rooms. We can have a drink while we let it sink in.” He carried her down to his rooms and straight to his liquor cabinet. She dropped their things onto a chair as they passed it. “Grab the third one from the left.” When she grabbed the correct bottle, he headed to the couch and set down. He ended the fire charms on them and summoned 2 glasses. “This will also help with your leg.” He handed her a glass and summoned his salve as she slid off his lap and to the other end of the couch. Severus rubbed the salve into her ankle and sent it back to his cabinet. “Just let it rest for a few minutes.” She nodded and they sat there with their drinks.
Hermione sighed as she let the drink and salve do their job. “Mmm, this does help.” She smiled at him as her ankle started to tingle. “Ooh, the salve must be working. It's tingling.” He nodded and finished his glass of wine before rubbing her ankle. The heat from his hands seemed to make it better. “That feels good. Almost like it's working better.”
He smiled as he continued to massage it into her skin. “It does. I designed this for when I would get crucioed. It wasn't very often but enough that I needed something to help me get through it enough that I could teach the next day. Once the tingling starts, the heat helps it to reach deeper into the muscles.” He looked up to see her eyes closed in bliss. He pulled his hands away. “There, it should be all better now. How is your thigh?”
“I wish I could put some on my thigh.” She laughed as she opened her eyes and finished her glass of wine. “My hero.” She giggled when he smirked and shook his head. “Admit it, you like playing the hero and being in charge of where I go and when.”
He nodded. “I admit I do, but never tell anyone I said that.” He stood up and pulled her up. “One more dance before I take you back? There were no waltzes tonight and I much prefer them.”
She nodded and let him move his furniture out of the way. “Just one, then that's it.” He nodded and spelled a song to start. As he led her around the room, she smiled at him. “You are a very good dancer you know. A natural.”
He laughed as he twirled her around. “Height has an advantage to it. But, it also helps to have a good dancer as your partner, which you are. And I do enjoy dancing with you.”
“Thank you Severus.” She blushed as he turned her around. “I enjoy dancing with you too.”
“Anytime you need a dance partner, let me know.” He smirked as the music stopped. He scooped her up and carried her out the door and towards her rooms. “A few more months and that leg should be good as new.”
“I hope so.” She smiled. “Then I can walk anywhere.” She grinned when he nodded sadly. “You can still walk with me though. It's nice to have company.”
“I would like that.” He set her down at her door. “Goodnight. I will see you tomorrow.”
She smiled and nodded. “Goodnight Severus. Thank you.” She saw him nod before turning and heading back to his rooms. She closed the door and sighed. “What an evening.” Hermione laughed and headed towards her bedroom. “Now to focus on Christmas gifts.”
As the days passed and the temperature lowered, Hermione got more excited about the holidays. The only gift she was stuck on was one for Harry. Her and Severus both were indecisive about what to get him. They were on Hogsmeade duty that weekend and during a charms class, she got an idea. Her next period was free so she headed towards Severus's office once class was over. He also had a free period then. “Severus!” She smiled as she turned a corner and saw him. “I think I thought of something for our mutual problem!”
“Good.” He unlocked his office and ushered her in. “What did you come up with?” They sat down and discussed it. By the time the weekend rolled around, they had it all figured out. It was the last Hogsmeade trip before the holidays so they planned to get some of their stuff together and the rest they would split up for after lunch.
When they got to Hogsmeade, Severus made sure to stay with her through the morning. After lunch, they separated to do their individual shopping. Severus looked around before heading to a store he and Hermione had stopped in earlier that morning. As he closed the door behind him, he saw her exiting another shop they had been in earlier. “Interesting.” He ducked away into the store when he saw her turning to look his way.
Hermione sighed as she left her last stop. She saw Severus leaving a store they had been in earlier. “Odd.” She shrugged and headed to the meeting place. “Everyone here?” When the students nodded, she motioned them on ahead with the other professors. She looked up as Severus joined them and held his arm out to her. “Did you get everything you wanted? I know I did.”
He nodded and smiled. “In fact I did. How's the leg?”
“It's fine.” She bit her lip and looked at him. “I'm a little worried though. You all gave me off for Christmas. I have been trying to tell Molly that I won't be going this year but she seems to think my parents want to go to her house for Christmas. Any ideas on how to get her to see that we want some time to ourselves?”
Severus frowned. “Well, I can think of one way but I don't know how you will take it.” When she looked at him hopefully, he shrugged. “There is only one thing that I know of that will supersede anything to her. She likes weddings. If worse comes to worse, tell her you have a boyfriend who you really like and you both wanted to have a private holiday with your parents. She may pry and want to invite him but if you tell her that he is old fashioned and wants to take his time meeting your friends and family, she should be ok with that. If I remember correctly, her family is old fashioned and they taught her to respect that.” He smirked at her. “If she believes that any pushing from anyone other than yourself could make or break your happy relationship, she will back off greatly.”
Hermione gasped and looked at him. “That is a brilliant idea! But what if she doesn't believe it? She saw right through Harry when he tried it last year.” She looked back at him when he sighed and stopped. “What?”
He turned to look at her. “What if it's not a lie? What if someone really did want to spend the holiday with you?” When she frowned, he shook his head. “Never mind.” He moved to continue walking when she pulled his arm to hold him back. “What?”
She smiled at him and leaned in to kiss him lightly. “It would be nice if I did have someone who wanted to spend the holiday with me. I know someone I would like to.” She was rewarded with a gasp of shock before she was pulled in for a deep kiss. “My parents already know him too. The question is, does he want to and how old fashioned is he?”
Severus pulled back and grinned. “He's very interested and not as old fashioned as some would believe.” He flushed a little. “He is however, just as inexperienced due to how he has lived.” He wrapped his hands around her and pulled her closer to whisper in her ear. “But willing to learn together.”
Hermione nodded and kissed him again. “I think he's got the kissing down. Though we may have to do some more research on it later tonight.” She laughed when he groaned into her neck. “Some very intense research.”
Severus pulled back and smiled at her.”I agree. For now though, we should get back to the school.” He reached down and took her hand, smiling when she gripped his in return. “What about your parents?”
She laughed as they continued walking. “They are already fine with it. I discussed a few things with them before returning to school.” As they neared the school, he let go and looped her arm through his in case of any students or staff. “Let's not tell anyone yet.” She froze when a snowball hit both of them. She looked up and pulled him down as more snowballs headed their way. “Harry!” She flicked her wand and sent 10 snowballs in the direction of the school entrance, smirking as they stood back up and heard 3 loud yelps. “Serves you right!” She pulled Severus over to the 3 men standing there dusting the snow from themselves. “Harry, Ron, what are you doing here?” She gave them each a hug before wincing. “Shit.”
“We came to get Remus. Minerva said he could come with us to get Molly and Arthur a gift.” He frowned as she rubbed her leg. “We also tried talking some sense into Molly but she still insists its nonsense and that your parents will be fine with all of you coming for Christmas.”
Hermione waved him off. “I recently got some inside information on how to deal with her. I can make her lay off it.” She grinned at them. “My boyfriend and I want to spend the holiday with my parents. He is somewhat old fashioned and doesn't want to meet many of my friends until we are more sure of the relationship. Any pressure and it could end what happiness we have.”
Ron laughed and nodded. “She was raised to respect that kind of thing. That is about the only thing that would make her back off.” He shook his head. “But when did you get a boyfriend?”
Hermione laughed when Severus shook his head. “I have kept it a secret for a while now because we met one day when he was visiting someone in Hogsmeade. I get to see him for a little bit every time I have Hogsmeade duty. Severus lets me spend a few hours with him.” She noticed them look at the man. “He hasn't met him but he knows who Severus is and respects him, so he does as Severus wishes when it comes to the time I have.”
Severus shrugged. “As long as she still does her duty and meets back up at the assigned time, she is allowed to see him.” He smirked at Remus. “He also knows all about her friends. The only thing I know is that he loves potions and is a half blood. He is also into a few other things too, such as reading.”
Remus caught the little side glance Hermione and Severus shared and it clicked in his head. He grinned at them. “Sounds perfect if you ask me! If they love the same things, then I am all for it.” He winked at them as the other two shrugged. They didn't understand everything. “When will you introduce him to these two and everyone else?”
Hermione shrugged as she winced again. “I will discuss it with him and see.” She smiled weakly at him. “Now, I need to get inside because I'm getting cold and my leg is hurting.”
Severus swung her up and carried her to the door. “You coming or going?” He let the man open the door for them. He smiled as they waved and headed off. He got her to her rooms and set her down at the doorway to her bedroom. “Change while I get the salve.” He hurried through the floo and grabbed his salve. When he returned, she was just opening her bedroom door. He carried her to the couch and set her down. He opened the jar and let her rub some one her wound. “Better?”
“Much.” She sighed and took the blanket he summoned from her chair. “Thanks.” She smiled and looked at him. “Now, about us.” They got to discussing their new relationship, along with some research for it. She grinned as they broke apart once more. “I may already be addicted to you. How should we tell the staff?”
Severus held up a hand before taking off his boots and jacket. He then moved to pull her onto his lap, laying her head on his shoulder. “I have an idea for the staff. And I know I'm already addicted to you.” He kissed her again. “The staff meeting is in 2 days. We will sit next to each other as usual and then leave first. I will either hold your hand or I will put my arm around your waist. As we walk out.”
She giggled. “Wrap your arm around my waist. Nobody has ever seen you get that close to anyone other than when dancing.” She looked up at him with a grin. “They will be too shocked to come after us.”
Severus chuckled and shook his head. “I do believe you have been around me too long. You have picked up some Slytherin tendencies.”
“No, I have always had them. How else do you think I got Harry and Ron to do stuff all these years?” She smirked at him. “Though to be honest, I wouldn't mind having a little Slytherin in me occasionally.” She smiled when he stared at her in shock and leaned in to kiss him again, sighing when she felt his tongue slide inside her mouth. She kissed him deeper and eventually pulled back so they could breathe again. “Much better.”
Severus sighed and pulled her closer. “I think I will enjoy having you around. We should get to supper though. We should also tell Remus about our plan.” She nodded and they got up to put their shoes on. “He held his arm out to her once she transfigured her shorts into pants. “Shall we?” She smiled, looped her arm in his, and they headed to supper.
When the day came for the students to return home, they quickly packed what they needed. They were going to leave right after the staff meeting. No students were staying over the holiday for once. The students were on their way and soon they were sitting through the staff meeting with Remus on the other side of Hermione. As they stood to leave, he winked at Remus and slid his arm around her waist before pulling her out the door. They heard Remus laughing as the door swung closed behind them. Hermione snickered as they headed to the entrance Hall and pulled their jackets on. “Let's go, mum and dad are waiting.” They headed out to the gates and apperated away.
