Chapter 4
Hermione eventually found her way to the former Heads living quarters. The entrance was a statue of Knight who had lived in the 18th century, according to the plaque at the base.
"Fairy-Floss" she addressed the Knight, he tilted his helmet covered head and moved so she could enter the dorm. The common area was basic, yet cosy. There was a wall of bookshelves, filled with numerous books. She'd heard it was a tradition for the Head Boy and Head Girl of the year, to leave a book, as a token of their time as leaders. Hermione couldn't wait to scour the shelves, and see what was left. She made her way over to the room marked H.G. As much as she may flatter herself that the door had personalised itself, the other food read H.B for Head Boy. She entered the room, taking a deep breath and looking around.
'Right, time to get on with it' she thought to herself. And with that, she placed her bag on the bed and proceeded to levitate out her carefully packed items. A new prize possession had been the cassette player. Before she'd left, Ron had assisted her in making it a more magically influence player. Essentially, she could request any song, muggle of magical, and it would play. She had been missing her parents a lot lately, and found herself listening to their favourite music. With a swift movement of her wand, Pink Floyd began playing, and Hermione began unpacking.
"Is this going to be a thing that you do, Granger?"
Hermione almost jumped out of her skin, shocked that there was someone else in her quarters. She had changed into shorts and a singlet half an hour in to setting up her room, as she had started to get warm and didn't want to ruin her dress. However, that voice brought a slight chill to the room that wasn't there before, and made her turn around quickly.
"Umm," she looked around the room, trying to avoid eye contact, feeling quite vulnerable at someone else being in her little sanctum.
"Apologies, I just wondered if I would require a silencing spell for my room each afternoon?"
He smirked and turned back towards to common room.
"Wait, Draco" Hermione called, surprising even herself that she called him by his given name, "what are you doing here?"
He stopped and slowly turned back towards her,
"Well that's a complex question in itself isn't it, Granger." This time, there was no smirk, but an emotion she was yet to define, flashed behind his eyes. After a pause, he sighed, taking pity on her he replied to her actual question.
"I'm located in the former Head Boys room."
Hermione, not sure how to react, simply replied
"Oh, okay. Well, no this won't be every afternoon" she gestured to the stereo, which she had turned down, " I was just unpacking"
He simply nodded at her and turned and walked across the common room and into his own quarters.
Hermione walked over and closed the door, leaning against it, she let out a breath she didn't realise she'd been holding since he walked away.
'Draco Malfoy, living across the hall from me. Merlin, I could cope with having him in the castle, maybe even having to work with him. But essentially living together'.
She took several deep breathes, and took in the room in front of her; this is where she wanted to be, where she needed to be. She'd just have to deal with Draco Malfoy, and attempt to figure out how they were to co-exist. She was still a little bit baffled by his response to her presence. He was being civil and there had yet to be a snide comment.
'Give it time, Im sure one will slip out sooner or later'
How Harry and Ron were going to take this, was a whole other story. Harry may not actually be that fazed about it all, he too had testified at Malfoy and his mothers trials and he had stayed to hear the sentences they received. There was also a lightness to Harry now, that she hadn't seen since the death of Dumbledore, and Sirius before him. If anything, she could imagine Harry encouraging her to give Malfoy a chance, to show her who he was now. If anything, it seemed that Harry just wanted to move on and be normal. It would explain why he had refused to do more than the bare minimum for the Ministry post-war. They had wanted a poster boy of sorts, all he wanted was anonymity for the first time since he stepped through the barrier onto platform 9 and 3/4, all those years ago. Ron's reaction on the other hand was pretty obvious, and she was not looking forward to that conversation, anytime in the near future.
Hermione gathered up the teapot and two cups and saucers that she brought with her, and headed to the kitchenette. They were a favourite set from home, something she wanted to bring along as a token of her parents. She had many fond memories of drinking tea with her mother and catching up on her school breaks. Curling up in one of the arm chairs in the sitting room and loosing herself in a book, one of the cups appearing on the arm of the chair, resting with a small biscuit in the saucer, left by her mother. It was one of the comforts from home, she felt needed to have near her at the moment. She didn't know why she brought two of the teacups along, or why she stored both in the cupboard, but it felt right. As she turned back from the cupboard, another door opened from off the common area. The sight before her, had her stopped in her movement, as if she had been stunned. There in the flesh
Draco Malfoy .... clouded by steam... barely covered by a towel....
