CHAPTER FOUR
LUCIUS
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Black Rose: Thank you for your reviews. I promise that it’s a story that will have a good end. Not all the chapters will be as sad as the last two, but some of them will be even sadder. Anyway, here’s another one. Hope you’ll enjoy it.
It’s one my father’s parties and I find myself standing in the corner again. He always insists on me being there, so I show up and then try to find a good empty spot to be in, without being noticed. It’s like I’m there, but at the same time I’m not. I hate all people my father associates with. Stuck up bastards that don’t give a damn about anything, but their money.
Unfortunately, this time I can’t just safely stand in my corner, because this party is different. It’s my engagement. I can’t believe it. I’m thirteen and being engaged to someone is the last thing on my mind. I haven’t even seen her yet, but I guess in pure blood families, like my own, it doesn’t matter. I am the heir of the Malfoys, which means that everything had already been decided for me.
My father pulls my hand and drags me out, to introduce me to the girl. I’m a little nervous. What if she’s ugly and I don’t like her? What if she doesn’t like me? Questions keep flying through my mind, when I finally hear my father’s words.
- “Lucius, please meet your future wife.”
I look up and see a petite chestnut-haired girl with big blue eyes. She looks nice and a little shy. I swallow the lump in my throat and bow – “Lucius Malfoy.”
She gives me her shaking hand – “Narcissa Black.”
I take her hand and place a quick kiss on her knuckles. – “It’s nice to meet you.”
Her cheeks blush, she lowers her head down and makes a graceful curtsey before taking her hand back.
Neither of us know what to do or say next, so we just keep standing there uncomfortably. Finally, I hear our father’s voices.
- “I think we need to give them a little time to get to know each other. What do you think, Cygnus?” my father asks a toll dark man.
- “You’re right, Abraxas. Let’s give the kids some privacy.”
They take us to my father’s study. My father lowers his head to my ear and whispers – “Don’t even think of fucking it up for me, boy. I know your mother taught you how to apparate, but if I come back and won’t find you here, you will pay dearly.”
I swallow hard and nod. I see that her father whispers something to her and hear – “Yes, father” before the dark man straightens up and leaves the room with my father following behind.
We both take a seat on the couch and just stare at each other for a while. It feels awkward to just sit there in silence. I give her a little smile. That seems to do the trick and she smiles back at me.
- “My father said that we should get to know each other, because we’ll be getting married in three years. He says it’s my duty, because I am the oldest.” she tells me.
- “How many brothers and sisters do you have?”
- “I have two younger sisters, but I am close with only one of them. Do you have any siblings?”
I shake my head – “No. Mother says that I used to have a little sister, but she died right after birth, so I don’t remember her.”
- “I’m sorry. It’s probably lonely for you, being on your own all the time. I don’t know what I’d do without Andromeda. Do you have any friends?”
I shake my head again – “No. My father says that I don’t need any. He says friends make us week.”
- “What about school? Do you have any there?”
- “Not really. Everyone knows who my father is, so… I have servants though.”
- “Servants? Like house elves?”
- “No, like people who will do stuff for me because I’m a Malfoy. Do you have any friends?”
- “Well, I didn’t really have any, except for my sister, but I made a few when I went to school.”
- “How come I haven’t seen you in Hogwarts?”
- “I used to live with my mother and sisters in France. We only got here recently, so I’ll be starting my second year at Hogwarts.”
- “Do you know which house you’ll be sorted into?”
- “I’m going to Slytherin.”
- “Cool. I’m in Slytherin too. I can show you around if you want.”
She smiles at me again. – “Yeah, that would be nice.”
We stay quiet for a while before she starts talking again.
- “So, I guess we’re engaged now.”
- “Yeah”
- “So what are we supposed to do?”
- “I don’t know. I guess we’re supposed to… well…” Words can’t seem to come out of my mouth and I look at the floor and blush.
She looks at me and giggles, then takes my hand – “I didn’t mean it like that. I mean if you want we can kiss. I never kissed anyone before, but I tried once with tomato.”
- “Tomato?” I look at her for a second and start giggling too. “Well, that makes you an expert in my book. I don’t even know what my father would do if he caught me kissing a tomato.”
She laughs with me – “You know Lucius, you’re alright. I think we can be friends.”
- “I’d like that.”
Before we know it, our fathers come back to the room. They seem pleased. Apparently, the party is over and guests are starting to leave. We give each other one last smile before they go.
My father says something to me about their family’s wealth, but I don’t hear his comments. For once I have something to look forward to when I go to school.
Few last weeks of the summer fly by and finally school starts. I’m excited. I’m not sure if I ever was that excited in my life before. My excitement goes away, when I don’t see her among students in my house. I decide to send her an owl, but to actually write a letter, I need to find a place to be on my own, without anyone following me every minute. This year it’s even worse than before. I literally can’t go to the restroom without anyone standing by the door with a tissue. God forbid if I want to wipe my own butt.
After lunch, I pick up my books and make my way to Potions. As always, I’m being followed by two of my father’s goons. I don’t really pay attention where I’m going. All I can think of, is how to get away from them and have enough time to write a damn letter. My thoughts are interrupted when I suddenly collide with something. Or rather with someone.
I look at the boy in front of me. His books are scattered around on the floor, just like my own. It seems like he was being chased by four other guys. They see him collide with me and walk away laughing. I hear one of them saying – “You know who this idiot just ran into? Malfoy! I think it’s safe to assume gentleman, that his body will be fished out of the river tomorrow with some other garbage like him.” I hear all of them laughing at the clever joke their friend made. Idiots.
I take a look at the boy again and remember Narcissa’s words about making friends. After all, I made one in her. I guess I can try again, so I help him gather his books and offer him my hand. – “Lucius Malfoy. Sorry, I should have been looking where I was going” I say and prepare myself to watch him walk away as fast as he can.
He takes his books and looks at me with surprise. With a bit of hesitation, he shakes my hand. – “Severus Snape. It’s ok, as you can see I was kind off in a hurry myself.”
- “Yeah, what a jerks. Friends of yours?”
- “No. I don’t have any.”
I look at him with surprise. I thought not having friends was strictly a Malfoy thing. – “Do you really not know who I am?” I ask, trying not to sound too hopeful.
- “I know who you are. Everyone knows who you are.”
- “Oh” I sigh. There goes my hope for making a friend.
- “So, is your father really going to kill me now?”
- “No” I answer quickly. “And I’m not going to tell him.” He nods his head.
- “Where were you going anyway?”
- “I need to find someplace quiet where no one would watch me” I point at two goons standing behind my back.
- “I need to pick something from my room. Wanna go with me?”
- “Sure”
We go to his room together, which makes me miss a part of my class. It’s ok though. I’m sure there will be no complains to my father about it. Being a Malfoy sometimes has its benefits. I order those two idiots to wait for me outside and while they do, I’m able to write a letter to Narcissa and send it with Severus’ pet raven. I’ve never seen a pet raven before. It’s different. Everything about him is different, but the more I get to know him, the more I understand that we are more alike than anyone would ever think.
Next day I receive a letter from Narcissa. She says that she is sick and she will have to miss a few days, but she will come back to school soon and we’ll see each other then.
Severus asks and I tell him about her. He doesn’t look surprised. He understands how it is not to have a choice. I ask him about his parents, but that’s a subject that he is trying to avoid at all costs. I hope he’ll be able to open up about them someday. For now, I’m just happy to have a friend in him. Few days later, Narcissa finally comes to school and I introduce them. They like each other and that makes me happy.
Next few weeks are amazing. Even the losers who were bugging Severus before, are trying to avoid us now. No one is stupid enough to mess with a Malfoy. We have a lot of classes together and we’re at the top of each one. Well, except Potions that is. No one can compare to Severs there. He’s a natural.
Sometimes he keeps disappearing on us. Says that he needs to meet someone. I try not ask, even though I’m dying to know who it is. But I know how it is not to have any privacy and try to give him some space. Cissy is curious too. Once, we finally decide to follow him. We wait till the evening and use an invisibility charm (Cissy is as good at Charms, as Severus at Potions.) to spy on him. Need to mention that using Stupefy charm on my father’s goons, was also her idea. She’s just that good.
We follow him to the lake and hide behind the bush. He meets with a girl named Lily. Strange, he never mentioned her before. I don’t know what is it about her, but I don’t like her. Cissy agrees with me. We wait and listen to their conversation. She keeps yelling at him about being friends with us.
- “You know that their families hate people like you and me and you still keep being friends with them. Why? Why, Severus? Why can’t you have normal friends like everybody else?” she throws.
- “They are normal. They don’t care about my blood status. They accept me for who I am. Why won’t you give them a chance?”
- “Chance? Are you crazy? Those people are prejudists. They hate everything that’s associated with the muggle world. Trust me, the last thing I want is for you to get hurt by one of them.”
- “Funny, cause up to now, the only people who were trying to hurt me are your friends.”
- “James didn’t mean to. He said he feels sorry they treated you like that. He says that he wanted to apologize, but you’re always with Malfoy and he didn’t get a chance.”
- “And you believe him?”
- “I do. People change, Severus. You just have to be more forgiving.”
- “No they don’t. My parents never did.”
- “They do, Severus. People change for the ones they love” she screams out and slaps the palm of her hand over her mouth. “It didn’t come out right. I’m sorry, Severus.”
What a bitch. The look on my friend’s face makes me want to bite her head off. Cissy squeezes my hand to keep me from stepping out of the bush, but I can feel that she is mad too.
- “No, it came out exactly how it is, Lily. You’re right, they don’t love me. But you’re wrong about Lucius and Narcissa.”
- “Do what you want Severus, but I want you to know that I’m not gonna stick around and watch you turn into one of them.” With that she turns and walks away. We slowly back away from our hiding place and run back to our dorms.
Weeks turn into months. Severus never mentions anything to us. He keeps going to meet her time to time, but those times are not as frequent as they were. He always comes back sad after those meetings. I want him to tell me, but I see how upset he is, so I don’t ask any questions.
The year is finally over. None of us are looking forward for a long break. We all gather at the Great Hall to say our goodbyes and promise to write to each other with the first opportunity. Cissy notices Lily in the crowd. They glare daggers at each other. Then, she gives me and Severus a kiss on the cheek and walks away with her head high. I silently watch that little scene and smile. Cissy’s ability to show her aristocratic upbringing is impeccable.
I look at Severus and see him reading a note.
He smiles. – “It’s from professor Mcgonagall. She says I forgot something in her office. I’ll be right back.” I nod and wait for him. Some time passes, but he never returns. I look at my timepiece. What the hell takes him so long? I start making my way through the crowd in an attempt to look for him.
- “Mister Malfoy, where do you think you’re going?” professor Mcgonagall asks me.
- “I’m sorry, professor. I was just going to look for Severus.”
- “But I thought he was with you” she says, with a bit of surprise.
- “He had a note from you. It said that he forgot something in your office.”
I can see worry in her eyes. – “I’ll look for him, Professor.” She nods and lets me go without any more questions.
I motion my goons to follow me and begin my search. I check the dorms and classes, but he’s nowhere in the castle. I start to think where else he can be. The only place that comes to mind is the lake. I hesitate. He might have wanted to say bye to Lily without anyone watching him, but my gut tells me otherwise and I follow it. Sadly, I am right.
Even being far away from him, I can already see that he is in trouble. James and three of his friends holding him naked upside down in the air. Lily is there with them. She seems to be saying something to James, but he doesn’t listen. I then hear Severus’ voice. He’s mad and embarrassed. He yells something out and I see her running away in tears, leaving him there alone with them.
Shit, I’m still far. I need to get to the other side of the lake. As I get closer, I hear James’ voice.
- “Show us your other form, freak.”
Other form? I stop for a second and watch as they drop Severus to the ground. The next moment, he turns into a black cat. Not really a cat though, more like a panther, but it’s hard to say from a far. He attempts to run and I see one of them turning into a black dog. Dog starts barking and they all laugh, watching Severus back away.
Next moment, the other three raise their wands and send Severus flying to the middle of the lake. They hold him in the air for a moment, waiting for their friend to take his human form. He then picks up his wand and I see a rope with a rock tied to the end of it, appear on the cat’s neck. One of them screams – “Sirius, stop. It’s not funny anymore. Come on, let him go. We had our fun.”
- “Shut up, Remus. You know how much I hate cats. I say, we let him have it. What do you think, James?”
He shakes his head, deciding what he wants to do. I look at the animal hanging in the air and hear him cry. I finally reach them, with my goons following behind.
- “What are you doing here, Malfoy?” James asks me.
- “Let him go.”
- “Or you’ll do what exactly? Tell your father about us?”
- “I won’t need to tell my father about you. I’ll take care of you, myself.”
- “Don’t think that we’re scared of you or your goons, Malfoy. It’s only three of you and four of us. I think…”
Without waiting for him to finish, I take out my wand and point it at the dog boy. I yell “Crucio” and watch him roll on the ground in pain. Everyone is now looking at me with fear. I smile.
- “How about now, James? Still want to take your chances?”
- “You can’t use an unforgivable. Stop that, you’re hurting him.”
- “Am I? Good. And don’t tell me what I can and can’t use. I have people with higher status than yours will ever be, wiping my shoes. Now, bring Severus back and I’ll release your little dog-friend.”
Two of his friends watch him levitate the animal back to the ground. The garment on his neck disappears and he changes back into his human form. As promised, I whisper “Finite Incantatem” and lift the curse. I watch them pick their friend up and go away in silence. Then, they stop for a moment. James turns his head to me.
– “It’s not over, Malfoy. I’ll make you pay for this.”
- “Bring it” I sneer and watch them go away.
I pick up Severus’ clothing from the ground and give it back to him. He’s still a little shaky from the incident. I offer him my hand and help him up.
- “An Animagus? Really? Why haven’t you ever told me?”
- “I didn’t want anyone to know. Last time I changed in front of someone, it didn’t end well. I didn’t mean to, but I couldn’t help it. It was my first time.”
- “Was it in front of them?”
- “No” he answers, without giving any further explanation. There’s still some things he just won’t talk to me about.
- “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
- “Thanks. And thanks for standing up for me. I never had anyone do that for me before.”
- “I never had a friend before.”
- “Yeah, me neither. I can’t believe you’ve used an unforgivable on Sirius. Do you think he’ll tell on you?”
- “He won’t dare. Even if he will, my father owns bigger half of the Wizengamot. Minister won’t take a shit without consulting with him first.”
- “Now you sound like a real Malfoy.”
- “Ha-ha, very funny. Well me being a Malfoy, just saved your furry arse, so don’t you even try to complain.”
-“I guess you’re right. I owe you one” he says, as we make our way back to the castle.
