Being that Lucius was a high commander in Lord Voldemort's army, he was gone for the summer on a recruiting drive. Narcissa thought that recruiting meant threatening people to join Voldemort's side or get beaten up and forced to join anyway. She was excited that her future husband was so important to the cause. She wanted to do work this summer promoting the cause, but her parents sent her to live at her Aunt Walburga and Uncle Orien Black's house for the summer. Her parents were both working for the cause and Aunt Walburga agreed to watch over her while they were away.
Narcissa hated going to Aunt Walburga's house. The only other people around were her jittery younger cousin Regulus and his brother Sirius, who was a year older than her. She had seen Sirius around school but they didn't talk much. Much to the horror of the entire Black family, Sirius was sorted Gryffindor at Hogwarts when everyone else in the family, Narcissa included, was sorted Slytherin. He had moved out and lived with the Potters for awhile, but apparently was back for the summer. He was very handsome, Narcissa thought. It was a shame that he had such liberal beliefs. Maybe he would come around when he got older.
Regulus buried his face in a book every day and seemed uninclined to have any conversation with Narcissa. She explored every nook and cranny of 12 Grimmauld Place, seeing a delightful house elf named Kreacher in the process.
"Mistress Cissy!" he exclaimed and bowed at her feet. He smiled up a her reverently.
"Kreacher!" she cried out and reached down to pull him up so she could hug him. The best part of going to Grimmauld Place when she was a kid was getting to see Kreacher. He spoiled her by washing her hair and spelling it so soft and smooth. And he would pick out the most wonderful clothes for her and feed her only her favorite foods. He gave her and her sisters endless candies and treats. And they loved him so much for spoiling them. He loved Mistress Walburga's sons, although he was suspicious of Master Sirius, but he loved spoiling the girls.
Narcissa emerged with freshly spelled hair, a lovely summer dress and strappy sandles, courtesy of Kreacher. She waited in the garden in back while Kreacher prepared afternoon tea. Just as Kreacher was going to suggest that he join her for tea, Sirius popped in and sat down.
"Thanks Kreacher, that's all for now," Sirius said with a big grin on his face. Kreacher gave him a cautious look, maybe even a slightly dirty look, and apparated away with a loud pop.
"You shouldn't be so mean to Kreacher," Narcissa said giggling.
"Why on earth would I be nice to that old bag of bones?" Sirius asked still grinning at her and using his wand to fill their tea cups.
"Well," Narcissa thought about it. She couldn't actually think of a reason. Kreacher was really only nice to her and her sisters now that she thought about it. "Because he makes me happy," she settled on, nodding her head. Sirius laughed. She hesitated and then joined him.
"So have you discovered all of Grimmauld's Place's secrets?" Sirius leaned in and asked conspiritorily.
"Maybe you can show me yours and I'll show you mine," Narcissa said back, suddenly blushing as Sirius gave her a knowing look. "Not like that, the secrets, I mean," she said hitting him in the arm.
"Well, if I show you mine, you had better show me yours," Sirius said grabbing her hand and holding it around the wrist. His hand was warm and soft. Narcissa felt her magic bubbling up inside her. Suddenly, Sirius dropped her hand and stood up.
"Come on," he said and turned away and walked back into the house. Narcissa got up with a look of curiosity on her face. He led the way up two flights of stairs to his room. Narcissa stopped.
"Uh, Sirius, I can't go in your room," she said, starting to back up.
"Oh, no, not like that," Sirius said laughing as he realized that she was still a very proper young girl. "I want to take you to the roof," he said and pulled her by the hand into his room. He stopped and used a rope to pull a staircase down from the ceiling. He disappeared up the stairs and Narcissa hesitantly followed. She knew that she was engaged. She knew that it wasn't proper for someone of her age to be alone with any boy in their room. Or in secret hideaways above their room. But he insisted and she couldn't resist his chocolate brown, almost black eyes, or his smile.
She climbed up and found herself in a small room. At the other end of the room, Sirius climbed a ladder nailed into the wall up to a panel in the ceiling. He moved the panel and then disappeared outside. The evening sun poured through the hole lazily, nearly giving out to dark. She climbed up and emerged on the roof. There an old mattress laid on the ground, but otherwise it was unadorned.
Sirius laid down on the mattress and looked up at the sky. "It won't be dark for awhile, but it's more comfortable than standing," he said patting the spot next to him. Narcissa laid down as far over as she could lay and still be on the mattress. Then Sirius started talking. He told her about the Potters. She told him about the Malfoys. He made her laugh. The passage of time went by unnoticed.
"We can see the entire night sky up here," Narcissa said dreamily as the stars lit up the sky around them.
"It's really clear tonight, we can see everything," Sirius said happily. "Look, there I am," he said pointing to a star.
"It's Sirius!" Narcissa exclaimed seeing the star her cousin was named for. "And there's Regulus, and Andromeda," she said pointing out her cousin and sister. Sirius looked at Narcissa carefully.
"You aren't named for a star, are you Cissy," he asked, pondering the reason why. She shook her head no. His face was so close to hers now. They had gravitated toward one another as the evening cooled. Now he looked down on her. She wanted him to kiss her. She wanted his lips on her lips. She leaned up toward him, he leaned down toward her. Then an image of Lucius Malfoy entered her mind and she drew back in shock.
"No, no, I am not named for a star," she stammered wishing her heart wasn't beating so fast. But she couldn't have her first kiss with her cousin. That was wrong in so many ways. But she wanted to very much.
"Then I will have to name a star for you and it will be the only star in the Black family that is named for a person instead of the other way around," he said, his voice low and smooth. He rested his arm close enough that they were touching again. Narcissa's magic glowed inside of her. Everything in her body wanted him to press against her, her lips, her breasts pressed against his chest, her hips against his hips...
"There, that one right there. It will be Narcissa. It's right there next to Sirius, glowing so bright you almost blow me away," he said looking her in the eye. He was leaning in toward her again as she looked at the large yellow star with a huge halo. She almost didn't catch him in time, but she turned her head at the last minute and his lips grazed her cheek.
Suddenly Kreacher popped in and Sirius leaned back and acted like he was looking at the sky the whole time. Narcissa sat up, a blush shading her cheeks.
"Mistress Narcissa, you shouldn't be up here without a chaperone," Kreacher said touching her arm and apparating the two of them to her bedroom in the house. Once inside, Kreacher exited, locking the door behind him, muttering about what an untrustworthy boy Sirius was.
Narcissa felt her magic cool and then she felt sad. It had been exhilarating just being near Sirius. Their magics were very compatible. She recalled Andromeda telling her about how it felt when she was with Ted Tonks. About how their magics worked together and it was unlike any other feeling. Narcissa hadn't felt that way with anyone else, including Lucius, she realized. But Sirius was off limits. He was her cousin, although in this age of pureblood fanaticism, she supposed that could be celebrated rather than looked down upon. It really had more to do with his politics. That, and she was already promised to Lucius. For the first time Narcissa wondered if Lucius was too good to be true. If he was really so wonderful, why didn't she feel the same way with him that she did with Sirius? Maybe she just needed more time with Lucius.
Sirius came and went as he pleased throughout the summer, much to the chagrin of Walburga. Mother and son fought often and loudly. Narcissa spent as much time with him as she could but she had told him that he was to keep his hands off. He resisted at first, but she was firm. They went out all over London. One day to the zoo, another to see Big Ben and ride a boat down the Thames. He took her to do the things the tourists liked to do in the city, but he also took her to underground concerts, and snuck her into bars. He never touched her, no matter how much their magic boiled under the surface.
Lucius visited rarely. She held his hand and closed her eyes hoping for some reaction. But none ever occurred. He was rather boring, she found. He spouted Lord Voldemort's claims word for word. If she wanted to listen to pureblood ranting, she could go to the man himself. she thought.
Lucius still hadn't kissed her. She imagined that he was waiting for their wedding day. She wondered what it would be like to kiss him. The thought didn't warm her heart or make her magic bubble up. Her mind wandered to Sirius. He looked so handsome when he left that morning to meet James Potter in Diagon Alley. His arm brushed against hers and her whole body lit up. It felt like her magic wanted to reach out and pull his magic in sometimes. Others it felt like her magic resisted begin pulled in by his. It was sensual and it made her senses work in overdrive. Colors were brighter, sounds more pronounced, everything she touched felt so intensely. The effects dissipated over the course of the morning.
Around eleven, the front bell rang. Kreacher screamed from the entrance, "Mistress Bellatrix!" Narcissa ran for the entrance to greet her sister. Bellatrix looked tired and unamused at the groveling house elf. She banished Kreacher with her belongings to the guest bedroom.
"Cissy!" she said happily, as her younger sister hugged her.
"Oh, Bellatrix, I'm so glad to see you," Narcissa gushed. She hadn't seen Bella for many months and she thought her sister was mad at her. But Bella seemed pleased to see her.
"As am I, dear sister," Bellatrix answered as she held her sister tightly. She let go abruptly and pushed Narcissa away. "You're too skinny, Cissy. Lucius wants a woman with curves, not some little boy," she scolded. Narcissa blushed. She didn't think she had a boy's body.
"Here, here," Sirius said walking into the kitchen where the two girls were now standing. Plates full of food sat on the counter after the luncheon Walburga hosted that day. Narcissa could smell him and she closed her eyes to breathe in his scent--the musky undertone driving her magic up. "I like a woman with curves," he said winking at Bellatrix. Bella rolled her eyes.
"Go away Sirius, no one wants you here," Bella gestured to the door, very much an imitation of Lord Voldemort. Narcissa giggled.
"Oh, please, let me get out of your way while you discuss making Narcissa more appealing to her blind and moronic fiancé. Because he would have to be blind and moronic not to be attracted to her in every way," Sirius said holding Narcissa's gaze. Her skin deepened a darker red and she looked away, still giggling.
"What's going on with you two?" Bellatrix asked suspiciously. She looked from Sirius, who grinned at her evilly, to Narcissa, who wouldn't meet her eye. "You better not have touched her!" she shouted at Sirius.
"Hey, I didn't touch her," Sirius defended himself.
"Is that true Narcissa?" Bellatrix turned to face her sister.
"Well, sort of," Narcissa stalled.
"What does that mean?" Bellatrix glared at her. Narcissa couldn't lie to her.
"Well, we almost had a moment, but we didn't and I told him to stop. He did and now we are friends. Just friends," Narcissa managed to choke out. Bellatrix made her nervous.
"You two act like nothing happened and he almost took your virginity?" Bellatrix hissed at the two of them. "You are supposed to have sex with one man for the rest of your life and you almost screwed that up by having sex with our cousin?" she looked appalled.
"No, Bella, no! I meant he almost kissed me. I've never kissed anyone Bella. I still haven't. I will be pure for Lucius," Narcissa blurted out, unable to control her blushing. Bella looked relieved and Narcissa was glad.
"And what's this bullshit about one man for the rest of your life, Bella?" Sirius asked meanly. He and Bella didn't get along and she was determined to make him look bad in front of Narcissa. He wasn't going to stand for it. It was about time someone told Narcissa what being a pureblood wife under Lord Voldemort's reign really meant. "You and I both know you've had more than one lover. Hell, you've had more than one lover at the same time," Sirius laughed and Bellatrix looked furious.
"That's none of your business, Sirius," Bella said with a warning tone.
"Come on Bella, tell Narcissa about the orgies. And how Lucius traded Narcissa's virginity to your precious Lord Voldemort in order to marry her," he stopped when Narcissa gasped.
"What are you talking about Sirius?" she asked in a quiet voice.
"Well, I mean, I don't really know. I just heard rumors...look Narcissa, I didn't mean to say that. I was just trying to make Bella feel like shit for being mean to you," Sirius said, suddenly right in front of her. She looked up to him waiting for an answer. He didn't say anything else. Narcissa looked to Bellatrix.
"I don't know for sure Narcissa, but yes, I believe that Lucius bought his way in to third in command with money and the promise of Malfoy Manor at the Lord's disposal. And he bought the right to marry you by promising that the Lord could have you first." Bellatrix wouldn't meet Narcissa's eye.
"Why?" Narcissa whispered.
"Because I have failed him and have not produced an heir," Bellatrix said closing her eyes. "I am married to Rodolphus in name only. I belong to the Dark Lord in every meaningful way otherwise. My Lord wants an heir. A son to carry on his legacy. I have not conceived in all of these years. The Dark Lord wants you to produce his heir," Bellatrix opened her eyes after she stopped talking, unshed tears resting in the corners.
"I don't want, but I trusted, I..." Narcissa trailed off unable to complete a thought. She trusted the Dark Lord. And now he wanted to impregnate her?
"Wow. That is so fucked up," Sirius said. He grabbed Narcissa's hand. "I don't want that for you, don't let that happen to you," he said looking deep into her eyes. She was stunned. Bellatrix grabbed his arm.
"Let go of her! You've caused enough trouble," she screeched and he let go of Narcissa's hand.
"Ouch, you broke the skin!" Sirius yelled at Bellatrix. She went to claw him in the face but he stepped back and her hand drew through the air next to his eye. He stormed out of the room calling for Kreacher. He may need stiches, Narcissa thought and went to follow him. Bella grabbed her arm tightly.
"Ow!" Narcissa whined but Bella only tightened her grip. Narcissa pouted but didn't say anything.
"Stay away from Sirius. He's trouble," she warned. "You have nothing to worry about where the Dark Lord is concerned," Bella told her. Narcissa knew what was expected of her. She stayed at Bella's side.
Narcissa didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Sirius. He packed his bag and left that night without saying a word to her. She cried herself to sleep, but knew it was for the best.
