Hermione landed on the soft grass as she took out her wand and slowly walked up to the gate. Tippy came forward and let her in. The Malfoy manor was still guarded heavily with blood wards. She asked Tippy to take her to the place on the manor grounds that she wanted to go. Tippy held her hand and they both disapparated from inside the gates.
Draco threw a pebble into the pond as he sat there with a firewhisky bottle in his other hand. He closed his eyes when he again thought about the shock on Hermione's face when he told her the truth. He could imagine what a mother must have felt after hearing that her daughter had lied to her so easily. In fact he too had been surprised when Rose had approached him. He did not know what to do. All he could think of was Hermione and how not to hurt her. He agreed for the plan because he did not want Hermione to look at him with disgust. He snorted when he recalled the way Ron had looked at him at the engagement party. He understood his pain as well. Who would want his daughter to marry a man twice his age especially when the said man was his childhood nemesis. He wished Hermione would not hate him from now onwards after knowing the truth.
He heard the swish sound of apparation and looked back only to groan inside. She was unrelenting as usual. He should have known she would know where to find him. He stood up from the ground where he was sitting. His hiding place has always been the huge Banyan tree on the shore of his pond in the manor ground. His ancestor had planted it and it was centuries old.
She saw him and walked straight to him as he stood up to meet her. his guilt all over his face as he got ready to receive his lashing. Instead she touched his cheek with her hand and spoke softly, "I know you Draco...I know you wouldn't lie about something so serious. So tell me everything. I want to know what actually happened and please do not leave any details. Maybe this truth may help us nab her killer."
Surprised by her calm behaviour Draco asked, "How did you know I was here?"
Hermione smirked, "You told me about this place when we talked about our favourite places to hide. I remembered it. Thats all."
Draco nodded and then gestured to the gazebo near them, "Come let us sit here. It will be more comfortable. I want to tell you everything."
They walked into the gazebo and then sat on comfortable chairs as Tippy arranged tea and scones for them. They both thanked her. As soon as she left Draco continued, "Granger, I know you might not believe what I am about to say but that is the truth. it was that short and I...I handled the situation badly. I should have come to you and we could have figured how to deal with it but...but I chickened out as usual. I did not want you to hate me and so to save face I agreed to lie along with Rose. Twenty years and I am still a coward! God, maybe if I hadn't been so scared I would have saved her life...I don't know..I was the adult in that situation and I behaved like a terrified teenager! I...I don't have words to describe how I am loathing myself right now."
Hermione reached out and caught his hand in hers, "Look Draco...I know this is hard for you and I also know why you might have panicked but past is the past. Rose is gone and there is nothing that I can do about it but right now I want to catch her killer and any new details might help me do so. So please tell me everything and I will not hold anything against you in relation to this event."
Draco looked into her brown eyes with relief and said, "I will start from the beginning. All this happened at Scorpius's party. It was two and a half months before our engagement party. That night I was in my library reading my book when Tippy came to me. Scorp had told me about the party he was throwing. He was getting bored and so he would often call his friends and throw impromptu parties. I never interfered as he usually made sure everyone drank within their limits and no untoward incident took place while partying. That night party was similar to his impromptu parties, thrown for no reason at all. I could hear the teenagers shouting and cheering from my library. I did not mind because everyone was enjoying it. However Tippy came in and told me that some of the kids were destroying our furniture in the ballroom and also indulging in recreational potions. Worried I went down to investigate. When I went there I found a few chairs thrown around but nothing drastic. I looked around and found a few young men and women indulging in inappropriate bodily contact. I turned away searching for Scorpius. As I was looking one of his friends, Andrew, I think came to talk to me. He praised Scorpius and his parties. He even told me that my son was doing very well in potions study which made me proud. Then he handed me a normal drink and I took a few sips from it before leaving to look for Scorp again. As soon as I had taken a few steps I felt dizzy as if I was losing my balance and a rush of adrenaline went through my body. I did not know what to do. My throat became dry and I could not call for Tippy. I immediately thought of apparating but in that condition, it was risky. So I walked towards Scorpius's room hoping to find him. Somehow I stumbled inside his room only to find the bed and the room empty. I sank on his bed thankfully. I was having trouble seeing clearly and there was a buzz in my mind which was getting louder by the second."
Hermione put her hand on her mouth and gasped, "Oh Lord! your drink was spiked with lust potion."
Draco nodded and continued, "Yes, it was lust potion. I sat on the bed and tried to get back my senses to normal when I heard a sound. I looked up from the bed to see Rose standing at the bathroom door wearing a lot less than she usually does. I...I was shocked and I called out her name but no sound came out of my mouth. Rose smiled at me and walked slowly towards me. Confused I asked her what she was doing here but I don't think she heard the words come out of my mouth. She pushed me back and smiled and then she turned into another witch. I...I could not see her as Rose anymore. I don't know why but I relaxed thinking it wasn't Rose anymore. And then it all went dark. I dont remember what happened after that..its like I blacked out. Then I woke up the next morning only to watch Rose leave waving me goodbye. I shouted at her asking her to stop and that we should talk but she left without a word. I could not leave after her due to my state of undress. But I did find a letter from Rose telling me that she had a great night and that she would cherish those memories."
Hermione sat still wondering why Rose would behave like that. The girl was not at all behaving like Rose would. What had changed? Draco looked at her and assumed that Hermione did not believe him, "I still have the letter somewhere in my study. I read it a hundred times to actually believe that something had happened between us."
Hermione nodded and asked, "What happened after that? Did you two meet again?"
Draco shook his head, "No, I could not bring myself to meet her again. I was ashamed at what had happened and I was hoping that we would both forget about it but that was not to be so. After four weeks Rose was at my doorstep again. This time she told me that she was pregnant and that I was the baby's father. My world shattered at that moment. I could not believe that fate was punishing me so cruelly. I told her that she had every option to take and was free to do so. I even suggested that she remove the baby if she felt that it would ruin her life but Rose broke down. She wanted her first child no matter how it was conceived. I knew then that I had no other choice but to support her and hence the idea to get married. Although Rose was adamant that we announce our engagement before we get married. I told her that we could get our families together and get married in secret but she wanted it to be public. I could not refuse her. I was the adult in that situation and I had to make sure that her name was not besmirched. She was the one who suggested that we lie to you about our relationship because she did not want to disappoint you. Believe it or not, but I agreed for the same reason. I did not want to see you disappointed as well."
Hermione bit her lip trying to understand her daughter's feelings at that point. Did Rose truly feel that she would disappoint her if she told her the truth? She had never been a strict parent. she had always given Rose and Hugo all the freedom that they wanted. She did however make sure that they imbibed the best values she could give. So why couldn't Rose be honest with her? Did Rose see her as an aggressive parent who would judge her? And from what Draco was saying, it looked like she was the one who initiated the sexual act. Draco was too drugged to do anything as per his statement. She shook her head to clear her muddling thoughts. questions...more questions was what she got instead of answers! She needed Harry...he would be the one to best advise her about this.
She took a deep breath and looked at Draco who was staring at her with his piercing eyes. She was a little taken aback and blushed. He lowered his gaze and spoke, "I hope..I hope you believe me Granger. I need you to believe me. I have been too late in showing my feelings to you and I know this is not the right time or the place but I feel as if I will lose you if I dont say it now. All this happened because I kept my feelings to myself. Had I been open about them with you maybe I wouldn't have been so affected by the lust potion. I know I am too late now to say this but I need to say this...I...I have treasured your friendship Granger and wanted so much more than that. Maybe...I know there is a very slim almost non-existent chance of this happening but if there is a chance for me to be your friend and more...I want you to tell me. Can I hope for that at least?"
Hermione was stunned at his entreaty. He was being so humble as if he had committed a crime and need forgiveness for something that was not his fault. Her heart melted but she also needed to keep her focus on her daughter's murder which was yet to be solved. She could not clear his name right away even though her heart told her that he was innocent. She smiled at him and told him, "Malfoy, I want to be your friend and we need to really talk to get all this cleared out. So I suggest that we put our friendship on hold till we solve my daughter's case. Then we can figure this out. What do you say?"
Draco's face brightened at her words and he immediately smiled back, "That is all I am asking for Granger. I can wait as long as you want. I am more than willing to get this case solved. I will do whatever you want."
Hermione took a long breath and spoke, "In that case Malfoy, I want you to speak with Harry. I am too close to this case to be able to think properly, logically. I need an outsider's perspective. Harry can give me that as he has been working on this case for over a year now. Would you be willing to tell him the truth?"
Draco nodded, "Yes, if this will help you then of course I will."
Hermione stood up and put forward her hand, "Great, then let's get going. Harry will be in his office. We can meet him right now."
Draco frowned, "But shouldn't we let him know before we go there?"
Hermione simply shrugged, "No way, if I delay any information on Rose's case he will kill me. Rose was his favourite niece. Her murder left him very much disturbed especially because he could not crack the case after a year of investigating. He needs this more than me. Let's go."
Draco took her hand and because they were on Malfoy grounds he thought of the ministry office and disapparted both of them there. Harry was in his office finishing off a report about the death of a child due to drowning. They had suspected the child's stepfather as the culprit but it turned out to be the child's maternal uncle who was not happy with the sharing of the inheritance. Harry thought about children and how precious they are. He had three and Ron had two..well..now he had just Hugo. His thoughts inevitably turned to Rose...his beautiful Rose who never let him down. Always cheerful and vibrant, that child always made his day. Sadly she was no more and he being the head Auror was no closer to solving the case than he had been a year ago. He had interviewed all of her friends and professors. He went to her college and spoke with her classmates. They all liked her, she had no enemies. He talked with Michael as well and he looked devastated at her death. They had broken up but were still friends. He could find no one who had the motive to kill such a good child. They had to put it down to being a hate crime where someone with blood prejudice did not want Malfoy getting married to a half-blood. Yet he knew there was something missing, something that might help them solve this mystery and help them catch the killer. He sighed and put down the quill. He rubbed his face with his hands closing his eyes. He needed to take a break. Rose's death always made him emotional. It was like he lost his own child.
As he got up from his chair he heard a knock on the door. He asked that person to come in and was surprised to see Hermione and Malfoy at the door. Instinct told him that something important was about to happen and he was right. After he asked them to be seated, he watched Hermione fidget in her seat. She had been distraught after losing her only daughter. She remained a recluse for six months after that. He was glad she was going out now. It wasn't easy for him so he could imagine how hard it must have been for her to begin life again without Rose. He looked at Malfoy as well. He looked deeply lost. He had initially suspected Malfoy for killing Rose so that his family name would remain pure but his investigations told him that Malfoy had booked a medi-witch for Rose and also readied his Manor in Tuscany with things needed for child birth and a few other new things needed for a newborn. He was a man preparing to have a child. He would not have killed Rose especially since it would hurt Hermione so much. Harry had a shrewd eye, he knew Malfoy had feelings for Granger especially after he witnessed them kiss under the mistletoes more than a year back. As he sat back on his chair he saw two people who were apprehensive about something.
Hermione smiled at him awkwardly and spoke, "Harry we have new information about Rose. I think you should hear what Malfoy has to say. Maybe this will help us crack the case."
