Author's Note: Hey all, sooooo I had to go to the dentist today, to see if I needed a root canal, but to my great surprise and pleasure all my dentist did was adjust my bite and they think that will fix my problem, so yay! I have extra time now today, so I thought I would celebrate my low dentist bill with a new chapter. Although I will admit to being addicted to seeing my views increase and recieving reviews...so there's that.
Annecia89: Thank you so much for the well wishes! My cold is getting better, I'm just a bit congested still, but I will take it lol. Also I am glad you approve of where the story is going. I hope I don't disappoint you!
Hvsmith: Thank you so much for your review! I am so glad you like this, and I hope you continue to enjoy!

Draco didn't lead Hermione very far away, just to the empty courtyard where they could be alone. wEven the Hogwarts ghosts were more interested in the Welcome Feast than in drifing about.
Draco leaned against the wall, while Hermione hopped up onto the wall ledge, and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself once more. After a few more moments of silence Draco raised his eyebrow at her, a provocation to speak. When she didn't, he spoke instead.
"What did the Weasel do? I thought you two would be sneaking off by now to shag." Draco's voice held only trace amusement.
At those words Hermione couldn't contain her tears any longer, and she slid off the wall ledge, onto the ground, buried her head in her arms and cried. These tears were different from the millions she had shed after the battle. Those were of grief, anger and loss. These quiet tears were of heartache and betrayal and she couldn't be sure, but she suspected their pain, though soft, ran deeper than the others combined.
She didn't see the suspicion and realization dawn on Draco's face. She didn't see the flicker of anger. She didn't even see his face of concern. All she knew is one moment she felt cold and alone, and the next, his arms were around her, and he was rubbing her back in soothing circles, not saying a word, just being there.
It didn't take long for her to stop crying. Hermione Granger was not a weeper. She just needed the outlet so she could think clearly again. Once Draco sensed she was finished, he withdrew his touch, and waited for her to look at him.
"I'm sorry you had to see that." her words made him flinch. He didn't understand why she was apologizing, and deep down it made him wonder if he had done the right thing.
"Granger, we're friends now... it's okay." He looked at her sideways as she wiped her face. "So. What happened?"
Hermione could tell he had an idea, but was waiting for her verification. She squared her shoulders and looked Draco straight in the eye. "I saw him shagging Lavender on the train." she spoke quickly, matter of factly as if she was reading from a book. "It appears that everything that happened between us meant nothing to him."
To her surprise Draco swore. "Weasel must be dead from the neck up."
Hermione shook her head. "Lavender is beautiful, even with her scars, and clearly she has something that is more appealing than me. I just...I can't believe that I thought after everything...that he loved me. I was a fool." She whispered those last words, but Draco's eyes narrowed, and a cold fire seemed to alight behind his eyes.
"The Hermione Granger... a fool? If anyone is foolish its that Weasel-brained twit of a wizard." Draco's voice was serious, and hard, but Hermione couldn't help herself and began to laugh.
"I didn't realize how much I needed a laugh. Thanks Draco." she smiled brightly at him, though her eyes still spoke of a deep hurt.
Draco smirked at her, his signature smile, but for the first time that she had ever seen, his eyes weren't full of judgemnt, derision or condemnation. They were soft and peaceful. Those emotions, which Hermione had thought were foreign to Malfoy, really changed how she looked at his face. Even with their correspondence, she hadn't realized that his face would look different to her. She admitted to herself that she liked the change. Little did she know, Draco was thinking similar thoughts about her, and was wondering how best to take her pain away.
Draco helped Hermione off of the ground and waited for her to dust herself off before they slipped back into the Great Hall. As they sat down Draco leaned in and whispered, "Whenever you need to talk, let me know."
She smiled at him again, and would have spoken except the Headmistress rose from her place at the head table and made an announcement. "I believe this concludes our Welcome feast, newly appointed prefects and Head Boy and Girl will show the first year's to your dormitories. Our old seventh, now eighth years, please remain behind for a moment."
The hustle and bustle of the students was not enough to distract the eighth years, as they looked around and realized how little of them there were. More had died in the battle than the survivors had really been prepared for, and suddenly, the room felt empty, as if all the air had been sucked out of it.
