Hermione could feel the blood in her body, every bone, and she hadn't seen a mirror but she knew her eyes were bloodshot. She tailed behind Draco as they walked from Hogwarts back to his manor. Nothing felt right with her and though she would never admit it to herself, things were easier when she Ron and Harry were fighting Voldemort. Things were simple. They had a goal. They had a pretty strong incentive too, life or death. But things were confusing and fucked up now. She could think her way out of almost anything, well anything happening around her. She had never had to deal with anything inside herself before. And as she followed the blond silhouette of Draco Malfoy, she had never felt less like herself.
Draco turned to her before they approached the mossy, forgotten steps leading up to his front door.
"How are you feeling?" His expression was soft. Softer than what she was used to and it got her full attention
Hermione rubbed her sore neck "I have... I have felt better" She looked at the daunting trail to Draco's front door "I still can't make heads or tails of anything that is happening. Also why didn't you have sex with me back there. I was helpless, you could have done anything to me"
Draco took in a long breath through his nose "If I'm going to have sex with you, you've got to be Hermione. Not whoever the fuck you were back there"
Hermione shook her head "But you said you wanted to wait until I was more desperate. What does that even mean?" Clouds began to gather in the once clear night sky, though Draco nor Hermione seemed to notice
"The toad's eye... It never quite leaves your system. But once you're free of the curse you have more control. And it wasn't me who wanted to do that back there, it was the depraved part of me that has had it's skin stripped. It is a tortured animal, whose only intent is make those around me suffer. You might have known me as an insufferable bully. But I'm not a monster. More than likely I won't be able to control that part of me forever, and you knew what you were getting yourself into when you decided to let me help you. And I will probably fuck you up beyond recognition. I just hope it doesn't get to that"
Hermione swallowed hard and followed Draco to his top step. Droplets of rain began to fall from the sky and land on their faces. It was a nice feeling to Hermione. Anything that cooled her skin and reminded her of what being human felt like was very welcome. Draco looked up, scowled, unlocked his door and led himself and Hermione inside.
Draco walked to the Kitchen of his home which was the only place that didn't seem just covered in dust. It was clean and had a rustic charm. The old pots and pans that hung above the ceiling, the wood stove, it was very cozy. Almost cozy enough for Hermione to let her guard down. Draco pulled a box down from above his oven and placed it on his kitchen table for Hermione to see.
"When's the last time you went to Honeydukes?" Draco asked, still a softer than usual look in his eye
"I wouldn't even begin to remember" Hermione said "It's been a while"
"Do you remember the chocolate frogs that we would get on the train to hogwarts? I always hated them. But I would keep them to try to practice spells on. Those little fuckers are fast though, I never could. Anyways, I bet you're starving and chocolate of all things can help with the heat of toad's eye"
Draco picked up a wrapped frog and handed it to Hermione who took it cautiously.
"Are you sure you haven't put some sort of sex spell on this?" Hermione said
"Dammit Hermione" Draco put his hand forcefully on the table "You have no reason to trust me. But again I'm your only hope. So when I say eat, just fucking eat. Do you understand?"
Hermione jumped a little bit in her spot, and she could feel her body go limp. Draco took a deep breath then began again
"What I mean to say is, I might be fucked up, but when I am trying to be nice to you. I hope you'll accept it. I really don't want to hurt you, right now"
Hermione nodded and unwrapped the frog. She truly was feeling famished and she quickly ate it before it escaped. When she looked up Draco was heading towards the wood stove and pulled some chicken and vegetables out of his refridgerator. Hermione looked at him in shock and she saw him begin to cook something that smelled like stew.
"Hermione" Draco said, eyes still on his cooking "I want to talk to you about your parents"
Hermione sat in one of the cushioned chairs at Draco's table and pushed herself in, resting her elbows on the polished wood. She sighed
"What would you like to know?"
"Why did you do it?"
"You mean the spell of Oblivion right?" Hermione said "Well, I didn't know how the war would end is the short version"
"The stew will take a while. I want the long version" Draco still had his eyes fixated on the food he was making
"Why do you even want to know?"
"It's important for the effects of the toad's eye. Any anger or resentment, not necessarily the reason it appeared, can set it off. So I need to know about what happened with your parents"
"Fine" Hermione shot a look of annoyance at the back of Draco's head "Well if you really want to know, both me and Ron thought that we were going to have to sacrifice ourselves for Harry. We didn't think that there would be a chance in hell that either of us would live and we needed to keep Harry alive, or Voldemort would win. And my parents wouldn't even begin to understand the ramifications of what winning the war would mean, so I decided it would be better if they got to live their lives blissfully, without a dead daughter. Clearly I lived, but the spell of Oblivion... Well you can't undo it. It would be like shoving a piano through a woodchipper then trying to run the woodchipper backwards to recreate the piano. Memories are fragile and when they get shredded essentially, you can't ever put them back together. Even if all the pieces were there, I couldn't replicate their memory of me correctly. It would fuck them up permanently"
Draco looked at Hermione from the stove "You said that like it doesn't bother you, does it?"
"Yes. Constantly, You live without your parents, it's awful"
"It gets easier. But it's lonely, so that's why I'm saying not to be surprised if I have to fuck you one day. Fucked up people do fucked up things"
Hermione felt the heat that she so desperately wanted to never come back again, indeed come back. It started at the bottom of her stomach and rapidly spread through her veins. Draco took notice of this and rushed over to her. He grasped her neck and began to cut off her oxygen supply. But this time it was to no avail, Draco could see in Hermione's eyes that she needed to touch the plant. He ran to his room then put it in her hand. It pained him to have to do this, but Hermione and the plant were linked now, and if it wasn't kept alive by her touch, she would perish. Only death could get rid of the plant. Even if it had to be her own.
A rush of purplish red filled Hermione's vision. It sounded like shreiking going on in her head. "Kill Ron! Kill Him! Kill him now!". The voices were strong and Hermione could swear she could hear them in her bones. Like they were being clawed apart. The blood vessels in her face felt like they were swelling to explode. Draco watched hopelessly as the witch in front of him was turning blue in the face, then bright red and back to blue. Her body flailed in the chair and her muscles were contracting like crazy. Draco knew the plant's grasp was getting stronger. Finally Hermione gasped for air and the cursed plant couldn't hurt her for the time being. Draco snatched it from her hand. They looked at each other for a long time. Finally Draco spoke.
"Hermione, we need to research immediately after dinner. The plant is getting stronger. The good news, if you could call it good news is you will feel the plant calling to you less, but when it does call, the urges will be stronger. What did your vision say?"
"I need to kill Ron" Hermione's voice was as dull as the light blinking in and out of her eyes
"Hermione..." Draco said and then walked to the kitchen letting Hermione catch her breath. Draco knew they could do all the research in the world but it wouldn't stop the plant. The feeling of dread formed in Draco's stomach as he realized: Someone was going to have to die in order for Hermione to live. And while he couldn't figure out why, he knew he needed Hermione around. He felt more sane when he was with her. He was going to have to kill Ron.
Hermione was still trying to calm her body when Draco served the stew. She sat up immediately when it was served and ate like she hadn't eaten in years. Draco did the same and relished in the color coming back to Hermione's face while she ate. His insides had felt like they were on fire until she came to talk to him that one day. And all at once, Draco knew the solution.
"Love" He blurted out
"What?" Hermione said, mouthful of stew
"I know this sounds crazy but I think Love destroys the effects on the toads eye. You need to love Ron, you need to forgive him."
"WHAT?" Hermione said and slammed down her fork "I hate him!" Her face grew pale and her pupils seemed to dilate past the soft brown of her eyes "I hate him!"
Draco walked over and pushed Hermione down in her chair "You will not yell at me" and he grasped her jaw "It's either you forgive, or you die"
Hermione struggled in his grasp and even beared her teeth like an animal who had been beaten. The slap that Draco gave Hermione's cheek echoed around the kitchen.
"Don't fucking test me Hermione." He said to her and she slapped him back. He wasn't expecting this, even though maybe he should have since she had in fact slapped him before.
Draco pushed her back in her chair "One more fuck up, Hermione, and I will fuck the living shit out of you"
Hermione glared at him
"I'm stronger than you" He said "Now finish your food"
Hermione finished in silence. When she was done he walked her to her room and she slammed the door behind her. He gave it an hour then went to check on her. She was dead asleep when he opened the door and sat on the bed beside her. He just looked at her hair and her chest rising. She was the only human contact he had since the war and more than that... This was Hermione. The girl he picked on, the girl who was impure, the mudblood who he couldn't not stare at when she waltzed around the ball during the Goblet of Fire. She was the girl in this bed before him, and he was starting to have feelings that he didn't understand with the face of Hermione Granger. This was terrible.
