"Yes," they said as one, their tone's beyond serious now.
"There's a leak, Rory. A major one, and that is what got Kale killed."
"We don't know where the leak is, or even WHO it is. It's also very likely there's more than one."
A snort. "There always is. More than one. Hell, we had a grand total of twelve by the time all was said and done on Virgon." He looked at each of them, before his silver gaze focused on Admiral Roark. "Do you think Kale knew who it was? Who THEY were?"
"We believe that may be a definite possibility. At the very least, he may have been close to discovering who they were and was killed to stop him from doing anything about it."
A nod. "And now Logan, Fili and Kili are there alone, surrounded by enemies they have no idea are there."
"Yes," came the expected response.
More silence. Then..."I don't want to believe it could be Ardyn. He was my grandfathers Strike Commander on the Galactica before injury forced him retire from active combat duty, and I know he's friends with many of you...was friends with Kale." He stood suddenly, moving around the desk to go to the windows, his mind deeply unsettled by all he had heard so far. The thought that Ardyn could, or even WOULD be a leak, and therefor kill a friend...a fellow warrior to keep from being found out...It bothered him a lot more then he ever thought was possible.
He looked out over the Bay of Caprica, his silver eyes taking in the large bank of rolling gray and black clouds. There was a nasty storm brewing out there over the warm waters, and when it finally hit, it was going to rock Caprica City. His gaze narrowed on those clouds, watching the streaks of lightning.
Hum... came the thought with a slight smile. Harry's magical infinity was lightning. He was likely to be humming with energy right about now.
"I just don't want to believe that he could have gone so wrong. That he could turn so far from his duty as a Colonial Warrior."
"None of us ever wants to believe it of our fellow warriors, those that we place our faith, our trust in to watch our backs, and THIS, Roark, is only one of the reasons this job can be so fucking difficult. We don't LIKE to investigate our own people, but if there is even a HINT that they have gone bad, it's our job to do something about it, hard or not."
"Something very bad is going on over there, Roark, and Ardyn may, or may not be a part of it. That is what we need to find out. We need fresh eyes and a fresh perspective. We need someone who can look between the lines. Someone not afraid to take chances. We need someone who can make the hard decisions that are likely to have to be made, and finally, we need someone who will not let friendship stand in the way of doing his duty."
Roark's shoulders tensed and he seemed to flinch a bit at the last statement. He remained silent though, his head bowing. In the distance, lightning flashed brightly, followed by the deep rumble of thunder. Gabriel looked over at his twin, and then to his father as the office began to darken with the approaching storm, which then prompted the automatic lights to come on.
"Just wait, Gabe," Roark Sr. murmured to his second son, "let him think about it. What we're asking him to do would make any other warrior run the other way."
"Which would be why," he said as he turned around to look at them wryly, "there are so few asked to join Counter-Intelligence." He watched the smiles that turned up their lips. "Tell me what you need me to do," he said, a new determination lighting his eyes as, in the distance, lightning flashed again and the thunder that followed nearly shook the building as it boomed so loudly.
A heavy rain began to fall as Dacian reached for the com pad. "Raph, we need you and Schyler in Dad's office. If you could stop and roust Severus out of his lab, that would be great."
"We're already on our way, big brother."
"He said yes, then?" came Schyler's question.
Roark raised his arms, crossing them over his chest. "Was there really any doubt that I would?"
"Not at all, brat." The door slid open to admit Major Raphael Durin, Doctor-Colonel Schyler Durin, and behind them, Healer-Lt. Colonel Severus Prince Snape. It had been him who had spoken.
The cousins looked very much alike, except that Raphael had the same blue eyes that Gabriel had, while Schyler's were almost a grass green. Raphael's hair was the same midnight as his fathers and brothers, while Schyler's was the same blond that his father Raiden's had been. Raiden was one of Admiral Roark's three younger brothers, the other two being Kendric and Thorin.
Severus Prince Snape had shoulder-length, silky black hair and midnight eyes. He, like the first two was just over six feet tall, and where the other two were built more along the lines of warriors, he was thin, almost lanky.
Raphael turned off his communicator with a warm smile, sliding it into its holster on his weapon's belt, taking the tray from the man who had met them at the door with a word of thanks. "We knew you'd say yes," he told him as he came across the office, his six-four, nearly two-fourty, leanly muscled body moving with the grace of a very rare Caprican black puma.
Setting the tray down on the desk, he looked at him seriously. "Just as I am sure Harry will tell Uncle Thorin yes. You're sure though?"
"Yes, Raph, I'm sure." He gave him a smile, thinking as he watched him that he wouldn't mind owning one of those cats should one ever become available, though he was well aware one never would, and even if one DID, they would never make good house pets.
No wild animal ever did.
"Kale was killed doing what you are about to take over, Roark," Schyler said after securing the door and turning to come toward the desk.
Roark's eyes hardened and grew cold as they each studied him. "I know, Schy, and if Ardyn is in any way responsible for Kale's death, then he no longer deserves to be in the uniform that he is wearing, nor should he be allowed to remain free."
"Severus, were you able to clear your schedule for the unforeseen future?"
"I was, Dad," he answered his father-in-law. "I then sat down with the monsters and explained to them that Papa was going away for a few sectars."
A deep sigh suddenly sounded. "Severus, you really need to stop calling our children monsters," Dacian said amid the chuckles that sounded.
Severus arched a brow as he looked at his husband. "Why? They ARE monsters."
"That is beside the point," he said as everyone in the room erupted into laughter. "Ah hell, I give up."
"Roark, come sit down and eat something. We have a lot to go over and not a whole lot of time to go over it." Roark turned his head, his office door chiming as the security lock was disengaged, sliding open to admit his youngest brother, and behind HIM, Lt. Hadrian Peverell Potter. "Welcome, brother. Harry, come have a seat. Have you eaten? It looks like the kitchen sent up more than enough if you haven't. We were just going to go over the case as Roark had a mid-day meal."
"I'm fine, Admiral. I made the Commander and I something to eat as we talked, but thank you," he said as he came across the office, a worried look in his emerald gaze. Squatting down beside his brother's chair, he lay a hand on his forearm, his eyes meeting the silver...holding. "Are you alright?" he asked softly. "You're fairly humming, little brother."
A smile. "So are you, but I'm alright, or as alright as I can be given what I was just told, and what is believed of a man I never thought could, or WOULD go bad."
"Agreed, my brother, but if it IS Ardyn who's the leak, and if he's the one who killed Kale, then he needs to be stopped before anyone else can be hurt, or killed."
Roark nodded as Thorin pulled up another chair beside his for Harry to sit beside him. "Let's all take a seat," he said. "I'm not at all comfortable leaving the boys there on their own any longer than we have to."
"Nor are we," Harry said as he stood to take a seat in the chair, looking around the room at those who commanded the Colonial Counter-Intelligence Unit. "Tell us everything we need to know, then tell us what you would like for us to do about it," he said in a calm, steady voice. "Let's put an end to this before anyone else dies."
