The next day Severus receives another package and letter, this one the most shocking. This letter was an official request of courtship, he had thought the man was being old fashioned in his approach but didn't expect this though it made his start to consider that the man might be serious. The gift is a charmed pendant he gives himself the full day to reply and doesn't sit down until after dinner to do so. He puts pen to paper and then writes.
JL
Against what should be my better judgement, I accept. I can't promise anything, but I accept your offer of courtship and am willing to get to know you better. Please don't make me regret this.
Sincerely
S.S.
He sends it off before he can think better of it. He knows that there are a million ways this could go wrong, but he has to admit the man had gained his interest. He still doesn't understand why the man should want any connection with him, but he's proved he does, no one would keep a prank going this long or put such thought into one. So here Severus was in the highly unexpected situation of being courted, he can say he never would have seen this coming.
Harry is sitting by the fire that night, wondering if a reply will come. There were a few weeks left until classes began and he wanted to make sure he had trust before Snape had to go back to teaching, knowing that always made the man volatile, He had been pleasant to be around this summer, mainly because he hadn't yelled at him yet. Harry smiled and thought back to the first day they met. How in the hell had he ended up here? He laughed aloud. The fire crackled and an owl pecked on the window. Harry scrambled off of the sofa to let the bird in. This is it, he thought, it would make or break what he had been trying to do. He reached out and took the parchment. He gave the owl some treats and headed for the sofa again after closing the window. Slowly he read. "He Said Yes!" Harry jumped from his seat yelling in happiness. He would make sure that Snape didn't get hurt, it was of course his job now that he was courting him. Harry calmed himself and grabbed his cloak. It was almost 10pm but he headed for the astronomy tower anyway. Now things were getting more serious and he needed time to think.
Severus hopes he doesn't regret opening himself up like this, but he supposed the only thing to do was to wait and see. He spends the rest of the day brewing trying not to think of the major let down he had just most likely set up for himself. He's hoping he's wrong but it's in his nature to expect the worst.
The next day Harry slept in past breakfast and decided since it was Saturday, he would go to Hogsmeade to just to get out of the castle. Once he got dressed and headed out, he added his glamour before reaching his destination. Harry hated when he was recognized for one, two, he didn't want to be out in the open in a war. He had taken on the persona of a young man named Jace Logan. He had lunch and walked the street. He bought a few things for himself and Snape of course. Harry wouldn't have free run of Hogsmeade when school started, so Hermione suggested he get all the things he needed, and some mail order catalogs. So, he did just that. He had an extension charm on his trunk that hid all his little packages. It was getting late and he was getting hungry, so he headed to the Three Broomsticks for dinner. Taking a booth near the wall, somewhat in the shadows, he ordered his food and a butterbeer and pulled out the letter he carried with him. He always had it charmed to look like a newspaper, but he held it close. " I also know what it is to suffer alone." It was like he carried a piece of the man with him. As his food came to the table, the man in question came through the door.
Severus decides the head to Hogsmeade for dinner at the Three Broomsticks instead of in the great hall he enters and finds a table. Rosamaria comes up to take his order and chat with him for a few minutes before bustling off.
Harry always sat with his back to the wall, he wanted to see the room. He watched as the man sat, just out of the corner of his eye. He was startled when the barkeep asked if he would like another. "Jace! Hey, I see you're empty, refill?" he called from behind the bar, making Snape look at him, he went back to reading his "newspaper" like it was nothing.
Severus gets pulled out of his thoughts when the bartender calls across to another patron making Severus look up and then towards the man in the back-brown hair, in his twenties probably with a scattering of freckles on his face. The man nods and then returns the paper he's reading. Severus shrugs and then his drink is being brought to him. " The food will be out in a jiffy Professor. " Rosamaria says
Harry gets his refill and he folds the paper up and puts it back in his pocket. Taking out his book he bought himself on basic potions and began reading while his drank, trying not to look in Snape's direction. Once he finished, he paid the barkeep for his meal and placed his book in his pocket. He headed towards the door, hoping Snape wasn't watching him. Soon, he was back at Hogwarts in the common room in his pjs. You really are the most handsome man I have ever seen. He said it aloud before tucking in for the night. He wanted to be at breakfast in the morning. He downed a mild sleeping potion and fell asleep thinking of Snape's face
Severus finished his dinner and heads back to Hogwarts for the night. He still has no idea who it is courting him and it's driving him mad.
Harry woke refreshed the next day. He hoped that Snape would be at breakfast, but of course he hoped for any time he could see him. He dressed and headed downstairs saying good morning to some of the portraits as he went.
Severus makes it to breakfast early the next morning and hasn't heard any more from his mysterious courter.
Harry walks into the great hall all smiles that just gets bigger as he approaches the table. He hadn't written a reply to Snape yet, the books said don't reply right away. He would be doing that after breakfast though. "So, 2 weeks left Headmaster, is there anything I can help you do?" He asked as they all ate.
Dumbledore frowns " Well some of the professors may appreciate a hand getting things set up for their classes, if you are at loose ends, I'm sure any one of them could use some assistance. " He replies jovially.
Harry shook his head and swallowed, "Not bored really, just wanted to be helpful" Harry said and saw Snape scowl from the corner of his eye. If that man only knew. Harry finished up promising the Headmaster to come visit his office soon to find some things to help with. Then Harry headed to the common room, grabbing his bag, he went to the astronomy tower and sat down pulling out a parchment.
SS
I am overwhelmed with joy at your acceptance of my offer. I'm sure by now its driving you crazy about who I am, and I really apologize. It will all be worth it though. Why is it that you always wear black? Is it your favorite color? I personally think you look amazing in black, maybe one day something with a little green on it. I'm partial to the color orange but it's not something you tend to wear around. This gift is very special, I'm sure that you know what it is, but in case you don't, you wear it to show that you are being courted. I understand the role you play, and you will need to spell it so it's not seen, but I would be honored to have you wear this bracelet.
Yours Always
JL
A few hours after breakfast another owl flies into his rooms. " Again, I see. " He says to himself and takes the letter and package he reads the letter and then opens the package. He picks up the little circlet and looks it over yes this is a courtship bracelet all right. After a moment's hesitation he slips it on and spells it so only he can see it, God forbid Albus catch sight of it. He'd never let Severus live it down. He then moves to reply to the letter.
JL
You are correct as to my desire to know who you are, but I suppose you must have a good reason for the need of secrecy. I will wait and see if you make it worth my while. I wear black because it makes me seem foreboding, but actually my favorite color is green, so one day you might get lucky. Unfortunately, orange us a color you are highly unlikely to ever see on my person. I do know what the bracelet is, and it has been put on my wrist with the necessary charms in place. So I suppose this is the part that I ask you to tell me about yourself, I don't ask for anything that will give away your identity, but a few details about you would be appreciated, also any questions you have for me are welcome, if I cannot answer something I'll let you know.
Sincerely
S.S.
He sends it off and rubs the back of his neck with one hand. He traces the bracelet with his thumb and shakes his head bemused but unwillingly excited none the less.
Harry was still sitting in the tower when a reply came. He rubbed the owls head and untied the string. That was fast he thought. He felt giddy knowing that his bracelet was being worn. He replied right then.
SS.
My heart is happy knowing that you are wearing it even if no one can see it. Hopefully I will one day. About me? There isn't much to tell really. I like to read, and I like to fly but I'm not so good at it. The clouds just clear my mind. I'd much rather have a butterbeer than ale anyway. I have a very demanding job; one I have had for a very long time. I hope that soon I can change jobs though, I am not enjoying the work I do. It's just work. I do have a child like love for chocolate frogs as I've been collecting the cards since I was 11. I would love to know more about you as well, what you can or are willing to share. I'll wait for your reply
Yours Always
JL
Severus received this and waits until the next morning to reply. He doesn't want to seem too eager after all.
JL
Yes, one day if all goes well, you'll see it too. I also very much love to read and actually have a great love for muggle fiction. I also understand hating the job you have; I hate teaching to be completely honest with you. But for now, I must be here, I do hope one day to leave Hogwarts behind me however, as much as I love her, I was never meant to be a teacher. I prefer brandy to anything else and actually gave a fondness for butterbeer myself, and as you obviously already know I have quite the sweet tooth. I am not fond of flying myself, I can but prefer to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. Potions are my biggest love; they are my escape from everything. That's all I can think of for now. Since you insist on continually sending me gifts, here is one for you, in the box you will find a very strong medical potion a few drops can bring a person back from the brink of death so use it wisely.
S.S
He puts the vial of pearlescent potion into a little box and gives it and the letter to the owl.
Just after breakfast harry gets a reply and this time with a package attached for him. This confused him immensely. He took the letter and pulled out the vial. This was a potion that would serve well if needed in the final battle. How would he know? Harry was perplexed but more than that grateful. Harry placed the vial carefully in his trunk with Severus's gifts. Harry didn't get gifts and not from Snape. Harry's heart fluttered consistently all morning. He had a picnic lunch out by the lake and wrote his reply
SS
I was speechless at your gift and I will treasure it. Hopefully there will be no time in which I need to use it. Hogwarts is an amazing castle, but I understand your reasoning for wanting to leave. For one it has been the focus of most of the battle. I'm sure mainly because Potter is there but for other reasons as well. I honestly didn't know you had a sweet tooth; how would I know that? I will make note of that though. Why potions?
Yours Always
JL
Harry attached it to the bird along with another box of candies before sending it off.
That afternoon Severus receives the package and reads the note. He frowns, how does the man know of his tenuous relationship with Potter, though a few things from last year had made him start to questions some of his beliefs about the boy and though he had told Albus he didn't care to know the fact was he really didn't need to be told, there was only one reason Hogwarts would have taken over his guardianship. He shakes his head but how would the man know anything about it to begin with? He shakes his head. And shrugs just another piece of a puzzle he only has a few pieces to. He pulls a piece of parchment over and writes.
JL.
You should, with this war you never know, you said you were also a part of it, so I figured it would be a handy gift, I also hope you have no need of it but should you, you have it. And really the battle and certainly not Potter have anything to do with my desire to leave. It's more a matter of feeling tied to my past a bit too much because if being here. I had assumed as you sent me gifts of sweets twice that you had some knowledge of my sweet tooth, but you're right it's not something I let out much, but I thank you for the candy. As for why potions I suppose the easiest answer it is started as an escape for me and my mother from my father, I became very talented in them and I understand them they take patience and while I'm brewing it becomes a bit of a meditation for me and everything else falls away.
Sincerely
S.S.
Harry got so excited every time he saw an owl coming towards him. He was spending a lot of time in the quiet crisp air of the tower. He read through the letter smiling. He pulled out a parchment to write back.
SS
I understand being tied to your past. It's the exact reason I want out of the job I have as well. It can all be just too much sometimes. I never did have anything as a child that I could escape to. I am very glad to hear that you did have something. I prefer not to think of my childhood at all possible. It seems as though I may be able to cut ties soon. I still deal with fear every day. I promised myself a long time ago that I would never let a child hurt like I did, if I could help it. I guess that's what makes me good at public service. I would send something, but I don't have anything with me at the moment. I really enjoy talking to you.
Yours Always
JL
That evening Severus sends his reply
JL
It sounds like our childhoods seem quite similar, though I did have a few escapes potions and a park I visited regularly growing up. I wouldn't wish my childhood on anyone else either, but enough years have passed that it is not the burden it once was. I hope you find that. As I've said before you do not need to send me gifts to write me. I find myself enjoying it as well.
Sincerely.
S.S
He sends this off and heads to bed.
Harry was back in the common room when he got his reply. He wondered how bad his childhood was. There were so many things about this man behind the curtain. Harry and Snape had gotten into somewhat of a routine in writing letters just before the students came back for the year and Harry had to begin classes. Harry would send a letter before breakfast, getting a reply during the day, he would find the parchment waiting for him on his bed. He would then reply to say goodnight, always sending something special along with it. The day came that classes would begin, and Harry was trying to keep his wits about him, luckily with Hemione's help. Snape had pretty much avoided him all summer, now he had to sit in class with him. He had to pretend that he wasn't totally in love with the tall dark man. Much to the displeasure of Ron, Hermione announced she would be Harry's partner in potions this year and he was so grateful for the support, though he knew Ron would sulk for weeks. This was more important Harry told himself. Harry brushed his robes off and grabbed his bag. First class had to be potions with Professor Snape didn't it? They all headed down to breakfast, helping a few lost first years on the way. Harry's mind was everywhere, and he was anxious. He cursed himself for not buying some calming draught when he was out at Hogsmeade 3 days ago. It had been his last trip for a while, and he stocked up on a lot of things. Things that had been hinted in letters or things that just screamed Snape. Breakfast was almost over and Harry couldn't even look at the head table. Finally, Hermione shook him out of it and pulled him towards the dungeons. "You have to go to class Harry. You know who it is, just calm down" She said smiling. "It's going to be fine" she said as they walked down to the classroom
The last two weeks before the start of term had included a flurry of letters between the two. Severus was really starting to like the person who he only knew as JL. The first day of classes dawns and after a quick breakfast he makes his way to prepare for his first class his sixth year Gryffindors and Slytherins, they start to stream in and take their seat and he waits at his desk until they all get seated. Then he stands and moves to the lectern and glares at all of them. " This is the first year of your newt's potions class, if you have made it here, don't think you can slack off now. The potions we will be dealing with can be potentially dangerous of dealt with wrong, student pranks that before might have been let slide will see you out of my class that very day. " He says and includes his Slytherins in his glare. " I expect everyone to pay attention and follow each step to the T, if you have questions, that is what I am here for. Now who can tell me what the potion veritaserum does?" He asks.
When harry entered the classroom he saw his morning parchment rolled on the man's desk along with a small bowl of licorice that he sent a few days prior. In his mind he smiled and took his seat next to Hermione. She of course was ready and waiting to answer questions and Harry was trying to focus on the words he was saying instead of his striking beauty in Professor mode. Had it not been for Hermione, Harry would have botched the potion royally.
The class commences without issue, even his Slytherins knew when not to cross him. And each pair makes an at least acceptable potion as he walks among their cauldrons. At the end of the class he says, " Bottle a sample of your potions and leave them on the desk, your homework due next class is three feet on the uses of jobbernowl feathers in potions as well as why it is so important in this particular potion. Dismissed. " He says.
Once Harry was finally out of his classroom, he took a deep breath and Hermione grabbed his hand. "I sure as hell hope that gets easier" He said smiling. "Yea I hope so too, you have got to stop looking all dreamy at him Harry" She whispered into his ear as Ron stumbled out with Dean. "Charms" Hermione said and began walking leading the three boys. Ron was of course pissed that she hadn't been helping him in potions, so he wasn't talking to Harry.
Severus continues his day with another three classes interrupted by lunch and ended by dinner. By the end of it he had a headache. God, he hated teaching, the older classes weren't so bad but the younger years he wanted to strangle most of the time.
Harry made it through the day, not expecting the normal mid-day letter, and he was right. He didn't get a reply until he returned from dinner. He had planned this one special. He sat down by the end of his bed and began to write, to the person he was starting to know more and more, to the man he loved.
SS
I know you mentioned that you had your start of year classes today. I know you are probably in need of something a little stronger than just a headache potion. Enjoy your night and think of me.
JL
Harry shrank a bottle of the absolute best brandy he could get a hold of. It was special ordered and had to cross 4 countries to get here. It was in an ornate bottle that screamed expensive, a wax inlay of the brand across the front. He placed the shrank bottle into a box with a cushion charm and went to the window. He tied it to the bird and sent it off. Harry smiled. He hoped he could make his evening better.
Severus arrives home from dinner to see an owl waiting for him he opens the letter and then the package, he holds up the bottle and smiles," well I think I shall, thank you. " He mutters and unshrinks it cracking it open and pouring a small glass. He sits back sipping and reads over the letter again. The next morning, he replies.
JL
You have no idea how appreciated that gift was. It was a trying day the first class went all right, but the others were all younger years and very few of them care enough about potions to pay an ounce of attention. So again, I thank you for the very appropriate gift
Sincerely
S.S.
He sends this off and then moves to start his day.
Harry woke that morning happy about what he sent snape and hoped it would reflect in his mood this mooring in class. Before Harry could even get out of bed, a bird tapped on the window making everyone in the room look over. Harry went over and took the parchment and quickly taking it to his trunk. "Sorry guys" he said pulling out his clothes and spelling his trunk locked. He headed to the loo to dress and relieve himself of some stress in a hot shower. Thank the gods for puberty.
Severus showers and dresses before making his way up to breakfast. Taking his place at the head table. Just as breakfast starts.
Harry settled into his seat and the food appeared. He actually was hungry today. His nerves nowhere near where they were yesterday. As breakfast was finishing the owls with the morning post started to flood the hall. The last owl to enter was a very majestic owl, pure black but his feather shined, and the wingspan was larger than harry ever had seen. It flew over the Gryffindor table and slowly fluttered down to set on Harry's shoulder, which almost made him fall over with the weight of the large bird. She lifted her leg with a small nicely wrapped box. He took it from her, and she hooted making the sound echo around the hall before flying away.
Severus reads the paper during breakfast and then makes his way down to the dungeons to start his first class of the day before the scene in the Great Hall.
Harry looked around him as he held the package and the whole hall was quiet. and they were all looking at him. He glanced at the head table and noticed that Snape had already left the hall, good, he thought. Better he not see that kind of owl heading for me. He turned back around and grabbed some bacon and began to eat again like nothing happened, the box in his lap. When he had his fill and the hall was back to normal, he shrank the box and put it in his bag. "Potions?" He said to Hermione and she smiled taking his hand as he pulled her up.
Severus sets up for his first class and writes the recipe on the black board. His students trail in. Once they are seated, he says " Today we will be working on the memorandum potion, who can tell me what it does?" Very few hands are raised, and he calls on one of his Slytherins who responds, " It's the potion used in pensive it allows memories to be stored and viewed without deteriorating the memory. " Severus nods " That is correct. Ten points to Slytherin" Now the directions are on the board, everyone get started." He says and takes his place behind his desk.
Harry had finally gathered himself a little bit at least. He actually ended up making a fairly good potion without Hermione having to do both of them. He had to admit he did glance at him when he could. Classes ended and Harry took a look at him, taking him in quickly and headed out of the class. The day seemed to drag on for Harry. He was so excited about his package; he couldn't wait to open it tonight. They finished dinner; Harry inhaled his as fast as he could excusing himself to the common room. He pulled it out and unshrunk the box. opening it there were two small journals. They weren't bulky just simple leather-bound journals. Inside contained a note. "I appreciate your purchase Mr. Logan and I will be happy to help you find anything else you may need in the future. You know how to find me" That was all it said. Harry banished the wrappings and sat with just the journals, He pulled out a piece of parchment.

Please open to page one at exactly 8pm tonight.
JL
Harry shrank his journal and bound it going to the window. Sending it off. This would be the best purchase harry ever made.
A little after he returns to his rooms another owl flies into the room carrying a package and a note. He lets the bird as he reads the note and frowns, he looks at the little journal and at the clock it's just turning seven so he orders tea and reads keeping his eyes on the clock when it hits eight he opens the little journal to the first page.
