“Say it again.”
Potter looked up at her from the plate he was washing. It was the elves’ day off, so the two of them had to do the household chores themselves, something Daphne had gotten over rather quickly. There was actually something rather therapeutic about doing a braindead job with your hands while allowing your mind to wander. Not that the pureblood would ever admit that. She didn’t want to give her husband any ideas.
So they stood together in the kitchen, him at the sink washing the dishes one after another before handing them off to her to dry and put away. They didn’t use magic due to Potter’s insistence, and that was a point Daphne actually agreed with him on. Magic was this fabulous, incredible, otherworldly power that could shape the universe to its wielder's will. Using it for something as mundane as washing dishes seemed something of an insult to its majesty.
“What would you like me to say exactly?” Daphne could see in his eyes that Potter didn’t know what she was referring to. On one hand, she was hurt that he could have forgotten something that shook her so strongly, as if it weren’t important. On the other hand, she was touched that he could say such a thing so casually, as if it were no big thing.
Mostly, however, she was embarrassed to be put in the position of having to spell out what she wanted, especially considering the subject matter. She ducked her head, heat pooling in her cheeks in a way that she’s never felt before. Ice blue eyes focused down on the bowl and towel in her hands with single-minded determination not to steer away.
But she couldn’t help herself.
Timidly, hesitantly, she peeked at him through her lashes, almost being deterred by the way he was still watching her, waiting on her to make her desires known. In a small voice, she finally managed out, “This morning. . . before you left. . . you—”
Daphne immediately buried her face in her black tresses, normally pale face burning a bright red. Just thinking about that moment was making her heart race and her breathe short, as if she were in grave danger. But she didn’t feel scared. If anything, she felt. . . giddy? Her fingers involuntarily raised to her lips—gingerly touching where she had felt Potter’s lips press against hers—as they had throughout the day while she had been trying to get some work done.
The bright side was that the motion helped Potter understand what she meant without her having to debase herself any further. “Ah,” he said without a single hint of embarrassment, “I love you.” With that said, he went straight back to washing dishes.
“J—just like that?!” She felt like her heart was going to explode out of her chest, and she was growing light headed from lack of air. Yet he could just nonchalantly throw out such a declaration as if it were a pleasantry about the weather.
“Was the kiss too much?” he asked, looking at her in concern. With a sigh, he turned off the sink, took the towel out of her hands, set it down on the counter, and took her hands in his. “Listen, Daphne. I know neither of us chose this, and if we had had the option we likely would not have ended up together.” Potter spoke the truth, and Daphne still longed for her dream life without him. Despite that, hearing him say that stung.
He must have seen some hint of hurt through her carefully sculpted face, because he continued, “That being said, I’m genuinely happy with my life. With you. With us. And having gotten to know you these past few months, I think I can honestly say that I have grown to love you. I hope that you are also happy with the life we’re building together, and that maybe one day you’ll grow to love me back.
“I’m sorry that you had your choices stripped away from you. I’ve never had the chance to choose for myself, so I know how it feels. But when I’m with you, I don’t feel like I have to make the best of a bad deal. If anything, lately I’ve begun to feel like I got the best deal, like maybe my luck is finally starting to turn around.”
It was only then that Daphne realized she had been gazing deeply into Ha—Potter’s viridescent eyes the whole time he had been speaking, and that he had not let go of her hands. She broke eye contact and stepped away, an uncomfortable shiver down her spine. Where had all that come from, and what did it mean for her? And why were her arms and legs now covered in goosebumps despite the manor being liberally covered in warming charms?
As the former Greengrass wrapped her arms around herself, her perfect posture slouching somewhat as she felt more self-conscience than she had ever before, the wizard at her side looked back at the unwashed dishes.
“I think I’ve thoroughly ruined the mood. Let’s just leave them, Ninny and Nimmy will be happy to do them tomorrow. I’m going to head to bed. Good night, Daphne.”
He waited for a response, but when none was forthcoming he simply spun and strode out the kitchen. Leaving Daphne clutching herself and shivering as she desperately tried to calm herself without even understanding why she felt so tumultuous to begin with.
