The first thing that Hermione noticed when her feet touched the plank was that the rain had made them almost slimy. Donovan stepped down next to her and Draco joined a second later, Donovan held out his hand and dropped something, they listened, hearing a splash almost a full minute later. It was quite a drop, but there was water down there, that was a good sign even if they didn’t know how deep it was. They sat down on the plank, they discovered where the nearest bars were and slowly lowered themselves to them. The three looked at each other and communicated without words, they would move as quickly as they could, they would make it to the bottom, and no one would be left behind. Hermione sent a mental prayer to whatever deity was listening that all three of them would keep that promise, because her lack of knowledge about Donovan made her nervous and all her knowledge about Malfoy made her worry.
Hermione wasn’t sure how long they’d been climbing down, but it felt like forever. Her muscles shook and ached with overuse, and she cursed herself for not keeping a better exercise routine while at university. The blackness of the night pressed along them like a bed sheet that they couldn’t escape from, there was no light from above anymore and no light from below, and endless black that made Hermione want to sob. Suddenly, there was nothing to put her feet on anymore, she used her arms to lower herself as far as she could. She let out a swear that was shortly followed by Draco and then Donovan, they’d made the same discovery she had.
“I know where we are” Draco called over to them “Good news, if we let go we’ll survive the fall...given that we all know how to swim”
“And the bad news?” Hermione asked.
“We’re thirty miles away from the nearest town and in the dead zone” Draco answered “That’s why our magic isn’t working correctly”
“Wonderful” Donovan muttered “So, should we let go?”
“If we don’t do it now” Hermione answered “We will much sooner than planned, let’s go on three”
Hermione counted down from three and when she hit one, she let go, she wondered if the guys let go too. The wind rushed past her, her hair whipped out of the ponytail she’d put it in and the sound of the wind roared in her ears almost as loudly as roaring sound the breaks on the train had made. As Hermione was suspended in the black night, knowing that the inevitable splash was going to come, but not knowing when, her brilliant mind went over what had happened. The tracks being blown up, the part of the train that had been hanging off the tracks, the children being saved but them left for dead. Suddenly, she felt the icy water soak her shoes and she barely had time to suck in a breath before she was submerged.
Hermione fell deeper and deeper under the water until her feet hit the murky bottom on the lake and she pushed herself back towards the surface. She was dimly aware of the muffled sound of two splashes as she was coming back up. They must have hesitated, she packed that information away to use to harass them with later if they made sexist comments at her. As she got closer to the surface, Hermione’s hands stopped pushing her closer and she started to claw at the water as if it were a predator trying to kill her, which it kind of was. Her lungs ached and burned, she longed to take a deep breath, but slowly she stopped pulling herself to the surface and her head spun and her vision started to blacken. Then her head broke surface and she was able to take the much-needed breath, she coughed and took another then another in greedy gulps. Hermione’s eyes scanned the calm water, her breathing turning from normal to frantic as she waited for the boys to come up. Suddenly, Donovan came up, gasping for breath and coughing, his eyes locked on hers for a moment and then he too looked around.
“Where’s Draco?” Hermione asked, worried “Donovan!” Her worried eyes scanned the still calm water top “Where is Draco?!”
“He jumped when I did” Donovan answered “He...I couldn’t see him...”
Hermione didn’t listen anymore, she dove back down in the water and swam towards where Donovan had just come up. She was making her way to the bottom when she saw Draco trying to claw his way up to no avail, he was panicking, and it was making his progress slower. He was seizing up and his mouth was open, he was trying not to open his mouth for a breath that he desperately needed. Hermione swam right up to him, put her hands on either side of his face and brought her lips to his. Draco’s eyes widened in surprise, but Hermione didn’t kiss him, she pushed half the air she had in her lungs into his and then started to pull him to the surface. Between Donovan and Hermione, Draco was brought to the shore, it seemed to take forever, but soon Hermione was able to touch the ground and was crawling and dragging Draco towards the grass and completely out of and away from the water. All three of them laid on the ground just breathing and thinking about what had happened. Draco was on his side coughing and gasping, Hermione had another headache and her body felt like she’d just fallen from a bridge and to the bottom of a lake.
“We should get a fire going” Donovan said, after a few minutes of just lying there breathing “I’m a half-blood and I was a boy scout before I went to school and know how to build a fire without magic”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea” Hermione said, she was thinking back to the thought that had hit right before she’d hit the water.
“No offense, Hermione Granger” Donovan said “But we are wet, it is cold out here and we’ve barely got magic...we need to build a fire”
“I agree” Draco rasped out around a small cough.
“No” Hermione said “Please, listen to me. I think we just need to cast as strong a heating charm on ourselves as we can and then find better lodgings tomorrow night”
“But...” They started.
“Please, just listen to me” Hermione said, both guys looked at her for a moment and then nodded. She pulled her wand out and cast the strongest heating charm on herself as she could, they followed suit, and then they pulled themselves into the underbrush to wait out the night.
Hermione slid in and out sleep for a few hours. She wasn’t sure if the boys were sleeping, but she didn’t say anything when she was awake. As the sky brightened with the next day, Hermione looked over at the guys and found Draco looking back at her, but Donovan was still sleeping soundly. There was a noise above the water, on the bridge and Hermione opened her mouth to scream to the people that were up there, but she found herself pinned under Draco. His hand was over her mouth, his eyes were locked on hers and his breathing was slightly labored. He leaned over and put his mouth close to her ear, his breath tickled over the skin on her neck and brought goosebumps up all over her skin.
“Don’t speak” He whispered to her “Those are not ministry workers and definitely not Hogwarts professors” He looked over his shoulder at the bridge again “I don’t know who the hell that is, but they seem more interested in looking in the water, I think...I was thinking last night, I think...they’re looking for our bodies”
“I was thinking that last night” Hermione whispered back. Their conversation was cut off by someone calling out that the front of the train was in the water, no one found anything, everyone must have gotten off or was...eaten by something. Then the train started moving backwards, back towards platform 9 ¾ and the visitors were gone.
“We need to get moving” Draco said, he slapped Donovan awake “Wake-up. We need to get moving, now!”
To her surprise, Donovan got right up, and they moved quickly towards some nearby trees. When they were under a thick coverage of trees, Donovan stopped and leaned against a thick trunk and looked at the other two. He’d read the fear and charge in the air that had surrounded them when he’d woken up and didn’t ask any questions as to why Malfoy was laying on top of Hermione and why they needed to run immediately. Now, he wanted answers, he was sick of them holding whatever information they had about what was happening from him because now it was happening to him too.
“What is going on?” He asked them “Why were you on top of her, why did we have to run and why the hell couldn’t we have a fire last night”
“Donovan, we need to...” Hermione started.
“No!” He yelled “You guys need to tell me what the hell is going on!”
“I think...” Hermione said, looking over at Draco for a moment “I think that what happened to the track was set up for us. Draco and I...or one of us if not both of us”
“What makes you think that?” Donovan asked.
“Something caused the train to break” Hermione explained.
“We were going slow enough to stop and nothing bad would happen” Draco took over “We were nearly completely stopped when the tracks blew up”
“And they blew up pretty much right under the front of the train” Hermione picked up.
“But they didn’t plan it so well” Draco said “The front of the train was just a little too far back and fell slowly enough that it didn’t instantly break in half and plummet to the water”
“It gave us enough time to make our way back to the train and track that was secure” Hermione finished.
“Who saved the kids?” Donovan asked “And if they saw that the front of the train hadn’t broken off and fallen in the water, why didn’t they check to make sure that we were dead?”
“The school was likely told by someone who had something to do with what happened” Hermione answered “They would have been innocent and no one other than Minerva knew that there were three adults on the train...by the time she’d have been alerted about the problem, they could say that everyone in the front of the train was dead”
“And they’re not after you” Draco pointed out.
“Why not?” He asked
“Hermione fought on the side of the light” Draco answered “And she’s a muggle-born, I had to turn in a lot of people to stay out of Azkaban...they’re after one or both of us”
“Okay” Donovan nodded “That answers the rest of the questions” He looked from one to the other “So, what do we do?”
“We get to Hogwarts” Hermione answered him.
“And we stay out of sight as much as possible” Draco added in.
