CHAPTER 04 – What To Do
The eight students walked down the stone stairwell to the third floor. Alex Mondragon broke the silence once they made it to the open hallway.
“Did all that just happen?”
“I still see four elves.” Harry said.
“I could be delusional right now.” Ron’s stomach grumbled. “I haven’t had breakfast yet.”
“Food?” Draco bumped his shoulder as he pulled Ginny behind. “How can you think of food? This is the best day ever. Oh, I forgot they don’t feed you much in the Weasley home.”
Ginny wanted to do something but giving away any clues to who she really was could make things worse. Draco already teased her brother that he would be thinking of her. Hopefully, he didn’t really mean it.
“Careful with that one Potter. She looks plump enough as it is.” Draco laughed.
Pansy raised a fist and took a quick step, just enough to make Draco flinch. The others laughed.
“You better put that one on a leash. If she comes at me again, I’ll make her pay.”
“I’m sure you will.” Harry laughed and pulled Pansy back.
Draco turned his attention to the other Slytherin. “You’re not stupid enough to go to breakfast already, are you?”
Hermione watched Alex raise an eyebrow at Draco. “I need to get something in my room first.”
“Yeah, I forgot something too.” Draco grinned. One thing he liked about Alex was that he was quick to think of excuses that kept them out of trouble in class. Malfoy looked down at Hermione. “I told you to watch out for him.” The fear and worry in the little elf’s eyes got him excited. He bent down to slap her on the ass again. Just one parting touch before he would begin focusing all his attention on the Ginny elf.
Hermione was already flinching, waiting for his hand to grab her.
“Try it.”
When nothing came, she looked up at Alex. He hadn’t even looked over at Draco to address him. She stood between the two, walking and still holding Alex's hand. She would surely be crushed if they started fighting.
“What?”
“You have your elf. The next time you touch mine, I’m going to touch you back.”
Ron slapped a hand over his mouth to keep from laughing. Harry looked away, not wanting to get caught up in anything.
“And I don’t think you'll like the way I touch you.”
“Just fooling around Mondragon. You always take everything seriously. Are you sure the hat wasn’t supposed to send you to the crows. How about you learn to share.”
Hermione was startled when Alex laughed.
“Learn from you?”
“Alright then, we'll see who fills up their collar first.” He looked back at Ginny. “Keep up, unless you want me to drag you all the way.” He gave the leash a tug and sped up. Ginny’s bare elvish feet patted on the floor as she hurried to match his longer steps.
Hermione watched her friend run off with the most despicable student she's known. And it made her sick.
Harry and Ron enjoyed the site of Malfoy scurrying away with his tail between his legs. After the comments he gave about Pansy, she was even entertained with it all.
The remaining six stuck together until the hallway came to an intersection. Harry and Ron went left to a giant wooden double door that led to the bridge towards the Great Hall.
“See you around I guess?” Harry said.
“Pretty sure you will.” Alex shrugged and continued on to the stairwell with Hermione.
Ron pulled his Gryffindor scarf out and wrapped himself. Harry offered his to Pansy who huffed and turned her head. She didn’t care how cold it was on the bridge. She wasn’t wearing Gryffindor colors.
Ron felt a tug on his pants and looked down at Daphne. “What?”
She looked at Harry trying to offer his scarf then at Ron.
“Elves don’t wear scarfs. We’ve crossed this bridge with Dobbie in the snow and he wears less than you.
Daphne stomped her foot on the stone floor and had her fists on her hips.
“Bloody hell, fine.” Ron unwrapped the scarf and handed it over. “You're gonna have to do something nice for me later. “
Daphne mocked him then proceeded to wrap her body with the scarf. It was long enough to wrap most of her tiny elf stature and cover her bare sides.
Ron began putting on his mittens when he felt another tug. “Now what?”
Daphne held her palm up.
“They won’t even fit you.”
Her brow crinkled and she puffed her cheeks. Ron knew she was throwing a fit, but she looked kind of cute doing it. He still found it annoying.
“Fine!” The important thing was making it to breakfast as fast as he could.
Daphne took the mittens and Ron slapped his forehead when he saw what she did next. “Are you seeing this?”
Harry had a gloved hand on the door and turned around. Pansy stood at his side, still refusing to wear anything of his.
“She's putting my mittens on her feet.”
“Kind of brilliant.”
“You mean mental. Why did I get the broken one?”
“Come on.”
Harry pulled the small door open that was centered in the left of two big doors. When the weather was nice, the giant double doors were propped open. On bad weather days, the doors stayed closed and you had to use the smaller embedded door.
The wind cut across the bridge, stinging their faces. They made it only two meters before Pansy clung to Harry’s leg. Hopping onto his boot was the only way to keep bare feet off the frozen walkway. It stung much more than she expected.
Ron was a bit surprised to hear his elf laugh at the other one. But once she noticed him looking, she stopped.
Harry knelt down and unzipped his coat. “I can carry you inside if you want. You probably don’t weigh much.”
He held his coat open and Pansy didn’t hesitate. She leapt to his chest and clung to his sweater. Harry closed the coat over her and they continued on to breakfast.

Alex and Hermione heard the bridge door open and shut with a thump. The two looked at each other; now they were alone in the hallway. Both trying to figure the other one out.
Alex felt lucky. For him, he was more attracted to her than the other elves. He did see a lot of Hermione in the elf.
“You don’t have to hold my hand. I would think it to be tiring, having to hold it up like that.”
Hermione released his hand but not as quickly as she thought she would. She rubbed her shoulder. It was on the brink of going numb.
“There's a shortcut this way.” Alex pointed to the next stone spiraled stairwell. “And don’t worry about Draco. He won’t bother you any more.”
“Why?”
They were both a bit shocked by Hermione’s voice. It was a higher pitched than her normal voice. She didn’t expect he would recognize it. But she also didn’t expect to be able to say anything. She tried saying ‘I can speak, but nothing came out. Maybe it was the short time she spent holding his hand. Had that allowed her to use a single word to start a conversation with him?
“So, you can speak?”
She shook her head and twisted her wrist in the air.
“Not really? Something to do with your…” Alex pointed to his neck, “training thing?
Hermione nodded.
“We'll figure something out.”
Alex entered the stairwell first and sat on the second step down. “I guess since you can’t fully talk, you can keep a secret.” He looked up at Hermione who was still standing a step behind him. She scrunched her nose at him which didn’t have the intended affect she wanted. He laughed back instead. The elf was much cuter than expected. True, her pink skin would take getting used to, but her ears weren’t as bad as normal house elves. The biggest plus was that she didn’t have the normal elf nose. Alex wasn’t sure that would have been something he could ever get over. Whoever invented the pleasure elf Polyjuice Potion was a genius.
“Take a seat, then press that second stone right there, the red-ish one.” He pointed to the second stone on the wall by her feet. “The stairs flatten to a slide, all the way to the top level of the dungeons.”
Hermione grinned. They had a similar charm on the stairs to the girl's dormitories in Gryffindor Tower that kept boys from entering. This one was manual though.
“Hopefully no one else is in the tower. When I discovered it, I caused a pile up.”
Hermione giggled. She remembered hearing about an incident with a bunch of students piling up in the stairwell somewhere. She hadn’t discovered any more details than that. Taking a seat one step behind him, her pink hand reached for the stone. It sank into the wall and the steps collapsed.
The sudden change caused both of her arms to flail back. But she wasn’t the only one. Alex was whipped back, and his head fell onto her lap. They shot through the spiraled staircase like a bobsled. Stone walls spun around, giving no hint of an ending until they were already sliding into the hallway. Hermione lay on her back, staring up at the ornate carvings in the ceiling. A smile came forth like the first time she crossed the lake to Hogwarts.
“No time to relax.” Alex said. “I’m getting hungry. We really need to get to my room so we can go eat.”
Alex helped Hermione elf to her feet. The pink in her cheeks darkened when she realized the burlap had ridden up her thighs. She straightened the cloth and caught Alex staring at her legs. He looked away and cleared his throat when their eyes met.
“Um, sorry.” Alex waited a moment. “Can you run, or jog?” He looked back at her; she nodded.
When they jogged through the halls, Hermione noticed that her elf legs had much more stamina than her human ones. She felt like she could run forever. The muscles in her legs were now only carrying a fraction of the weight they were accustomed to. Alex grinned when Hermione began pulling away, passing him. She looked back with her own grin.
“Do you even know where the dungeons are?”
Her feet were fleet, and Alex grimaced with each push off the stone floors. He used all his focus just to keep her from pulling away any further. As they sprinted, Alex called out directions so they wouldn’t have to slow.
His legs tightened and cursed him for not warming up first. Alex smiled. It had been a while since someone pushed him like this. They slowed to a stop and he collapsed against the Slytherin dormitory door. He panted and smiled at the little elf who didn’t even look out of breath.
“You win that one.”
She crossed her arms with a smile. For a moment, she had forgotten her current situation. She was having more fun than she had in a while. Her curiosity of what the Slytherin common room was also flowing through her mind.
The Slytherin straightened and spoke the entry phrase to the door. “The heir is above the mud.” It unlatched and opened.
Hermione’s smile departed, knowing what that phrase was hinting at. Slytherins will always be Slytherins.
*********************
Harry, Ron, Pansy, and Daphne made it to the Great Hall. Pansy jumped out of Harry’s coat and strolled into the hall on her own, wanting to forget that ever happened.
Daphne laughed to herself. She would make sure Pansy never forgot about clinging to Harry’s chest. Daphne was pleased with herself. Even though the situation was horrible, she was the only elf that wasn’t’ running around half naked. She had a feeling that making Ron do what she wanted, was going to be easy. It would definitely make earning her freedom easier if she controlled the pace and… activities… as McGonagall called it. Daphne scowled at the thought of that hag.
“You even hate breakfast? You are mental.” Ron said, leaving Daphne in the doorway as he headed for the serving area.
The elf hurried to his side. Breakfast was her favorite meal. But he wouldn’t know that; how could she even tell him. And why did he keep looking at her face? Her facial expressions where her own business unless she directed them at someone.
The four grabbed trays of food and took an empty table. Harry and Ron sat across from each other with their elf beside them. The Great Hall was nearly empty. Not even 20 students had decided to stay during the break. None of the Gryffindor’s were from Harry and Ron’s year.
Daphne had forked a sausage and brought it to her mouth. She paused with it resting on her tongue as she concentrated on listening in on Harry and Ron discussing going to town the following day. A movement in the corner of her eye made her look across the table at Pansy. She sat there, smiling at Daphne. Daphne raised an eyebrow. Pansy pointed at Daphne then picked up her own sausage and began sucking it. Daphne realized she still had her sausage in her mouth and pulled it out. She pointed back at the other Slytherin then hugged herself, smiled, and made kisses, mocking how Pansy enjoyed clutching to Harry.
Pansy threw her sausage at the other elf and snarled.
“Tell your elf to leave mine alone!” Ron said. “Malfoy was right. She needs a leash.”
Pansy sneered at Ron.
“Maybe your elf started it?” Harry said.
Daphne put on her innocent eyes when Ron looked at her.
“Look at her. She wouldn’t do something like that.”
“Weren’t you complaining about her not too long ago?”
“No. I’m pretty sure I said she was brilliant.”
Harry shook his head then looked at Pansy. She pointed to her head and twirled a finger. He nodded in agreement. Ron was delusional.
Breakfast finished without further incidents and the group headed back to the Gryffindor Tower. The girls were finally going to see the inside of Gryffindor, but the two couldn’t even talk about it with each other. Daphne was trying to mime her thoughts, but she just looked ridiculous to Pansy.
“Are you going to write to your brothers…” Harry lowered his voice. “For tips?”
“That would be the last thing I'd do.” Ron looked back at the two elves following them to make sure they weren’t listening. “I wouldn’t believe a word they said. They would probably try to make a fool of me.”
“They can be jerks, can’t they.”
“You have no idea.” Ron said. “What about you?”
“I have a few ideas. Hopefully they work out. Not sure if I can… you know.”
“Yeah, won’t that be weird?” He looked back at Daphne again and thought maybe it wouldn’t be too weird. She flitted her fingers at him, telling him to face forward. “She's a bossy one. Especially for someone who can’t talk.”
Harry smiled. “I think you two were made for each other.”
Ron shoved him a little. “Knock it off.”

Up Next: Chapter 05 - The Snake and the Weasel
This next chapter will be an experiment. Instead of sticking with a 3rd POV omniscient, I might write the chapter twice in 3rd person limited.
Depending on length I might make Chapter 5 - The Snake and the Weasel(Draco POV) and Chapter 6 - The Snake and the Weasel(Ginny POV)
Or I'll put both in chapter 5 and have a page break midway labeled Chapter 5B for the second character. Which is only optional reading.
I thought it would be interesting to see how each character has their own growth from their interactions and activities. And to eliminate confusing head hopping.
