Having experienced the meals at Hogwarts, Delilah could honestly say that they were trash compared to what the Greengrass' elves cooked up.
Granted, the house elves at the school had to deal with a bigger amount of people, daily, and the quality of food had to be worse (she wasn't sure just how many galleons the school spent only on feeding a bunch of teenage kids), and they had to go for a more allergen semi-free menu (she knew it to be one of the reasons why there was no food made with any nuts, although she was intrigued to know just how many of her fellow students were actually allergic to stuff…)
But still, the meals at Hogwarts were monotonous... even by her standards.
She couldn't help but smile at the thought, thinking about how much better the food was going to be at the Greengrass' House.
"You're staring again, love" Astoria noticed her looking at her plate and chuckled "Relax, I'm sure you'll enjoy the food here."
Delilah snorted "Love, it isn't a matter of if I'm going to like eating here, but what I'm going to do once we get back to Hogwarts... I don't think I can go back to those boring meals" she whined.
"Oh, come on, love, it's not that bad!" Astoria protested.
"Astoria, I've eaten at Hogwarts. I know what they serve"
"Such a drama queen" Astoria rolled her eyes "It's not like you can't go into the kitchen and ask for any food you want…"
Delilah mumbled something and put more of the food in her plate.
The other three Greengrasses were watching the interaction with amusement.
"You know, you two really get along..." Daphne said "It's surprising that no one noticed you two were together for so long…"
"We've been close since the beginning of last year, Daph" Astoria answered "But it's only somewhat recently that we became a couple…"
"Speaking of" Lord Greengrass interrupted, "I'm intrigued as to how you two met in the first place... From what most people say, you Harry have a staunch dislike of anything Slytherin…"
"I have nothing against the house, sir" Delilah replied "In fact, were it not for an unfortunate meeting with Malfoy, I'd have been sorted there..." she said much to the shock of everyone else.
"Wait... You mean to tell us that daddy-help-me Malfoy is the reason why Harry bloody Potter isn't a snake?" Daphne asked in near-hysterics. No one saw fit to call her up on the language. That was how flabbergasted everyone was.
"Basically," he nodded "I met him twice before reaching Hogwarts, once at Madam Malkin's and once again during the train ride... He convinced me not to go to Slytherin, despite the hat wanting to send me there…"
"Stupid ponce." Astoria eloquently expressed the overall feeling of the situation.
"Yup... Thing is, I can totally see me struggling, if not with the upper years, at least with a couple of my peer had I been sent there... As you might know, I didn't had any knowledge of magic before getting my Hogwarts letter."
They did not know that.
"That actually explains a lot..." Daphne thought out loud, "some people were of the idea that you were too arrogant to greet your peers... Doesn't completely explain the why, though."
"Dumbledore had his 'reasons'..." he gathered courage to say the next bit "I... I begged him at the end of our first year to let me stay at the school... My... The people I used to live with were not... I didn't want to go back."
Not explicitly saying it was, perhaps, more impactful for the Greengrass. It was quite obvious that the young man dining with them hadn't let whatever happened with his guardians (neglect at best, at the worst, however...) behind.
Daphne remembered just how tiny Harry seemed in comparison to the first years, he actually looked smaller than his sister did. She was ashamed that she hopped onto the 'Potter is an arrogant git' bandwagon for the first year, thankfully she opened her eyes in their second one, mostly thanks to the little spitfire that was Astoria.
Lord and Lady Greengrass weren't feeling much different. They both were familiar with the Potters (James' family), knowing that Dorea and Charlus' grandchild was treated badly was upsetting.
Astoria did as Astoria does and metaphorically flew from her seat to hug her lover.
Trying to console a compact bundle of joy, Delilah with her eyes for someone, ANYONE, to change the conversation topic.
Her pleas were answered as the house-elves picked that moment to serve dessert. No one could be sad with cake in the vicinity.
Re energized by the sweet treat, the family started their impromptu interrogation session once again.
"So tell us, Harry. How did you two met?" Lady Greengrass asked innocently, mischief shining in her eyes.
Delilah was in the middle of swallowing a piece of cake to respond when Astoria did so for her.
"Oh, I caught him naked in the girls bathroom!" She chirped.
The silence that followed was deafening. The dignified Greengrass Family was so caught by surprise that no one noticed the half eaten cake that fell out of Daphne's mouth. Delilah, for her part, was doing the impossible trying not to die via asphyxiation.
"What?!" Lord Greengrass exclaimed.
"Is that true?" Lady Greengrass asked.
Astoria, for her part, was laughing her ass off, she even fell from her seat and was rolling on the floor.
Tortuous seconds later, Delilah finally managed to swallow her cake. A gulp of definitely-not-firewhiskey (thank Merlin for house-elves!) and she began to explain the... 'event' to the flustered parents.
"I... Well..." she took a deep breath, visibly calming down "There's some... context... behind it all..."
They all noticed she didn't deny the claim. The elder Greengrass were alternating their feelings between anger and intrigue but, considering how their youngest was still rolling on the floor, laughing, they decided to listen to the story first.
"First off, the bathroom in question was the second floor girl's bathroom, the one haunted by-"
"Moaning Myrtle" the remaining trio supplied. It was, perhaps, one of the most infamous locations in all of Hogwarts and, as far as they knew, barely anyone used it on a good school-year.
"Right" she continued, "As to what I was doing on that bathroom well..." she had the decency to blush "Since before going to Hogwarts I discovered a particular talent of mine…"
"Parseltongue?" Daphne asked arching an eyebrow, although she wasn't quite sure that he was referring to it."
"... Since before going to Hogwarts, I discovered two particular talents of mine..." Delilah corrected herself, "As Daphne has said, Parseltongue was one of them, even though I didn't realize what it truly was until our second year..." when she discovered that not every wizard/witch could listen and speak to snakes, she was utterly embarrassed. "No, It was in part thanks to my au... to my relatives that I found out something else" to exemplify herself, she willed for the bird's nest that was Harry's hair to change from that black mess to a shoulder-length, curly, blood-red mop of locks.
Ok, that wasn't what the Greengrass were expecting. All anger fled from their bodies when they realized the importance of that revelation.
"A... A..." Lord Greengrass tried to speak.
"A Metamorphmagus! Bu.. But.. How?!" Daphne was the first one to get out of her shock.
Lady Greengrass, for her part, was looking at Delilah up and down, as if she was the most exquisite piece of meat. It was unnerving her slightly.
"Right... Anyways, as you now know, living with muggles made it quite... difficult at first, I had to force myself to not change too much around other people, which wasn't that much of a chore, actually... So, I got my Hogwarts letter, found out magic exists and finally could find a reason for my talent, only to find out that no one else seemed to be capable of changing as I did... the few times I got caught doing it, I excused myself saying it was a charm or a bad attempt at transfiguration."
She took a sip of the 'non-alcoholic' water and continued "Even sneaking into the library and the forbidden section gave me no results, so I had to find a place where I could be reasonably alone and had a mirror or two to see the changes so that I could practice..." she sighed, feeling a weight lifting from her shoulders "That particular bathroom was perfect for it, for the first two years I practiced and mastered all the changes I could, weight, height, skin and eye color, hair, you name it."
She could see the three Greengrass nodding along, it certainly explained a lot and turned their opinion on Harry from a teenage perving on a girl's bathroom to a young intrigued wizard trying to do the best he could with that little knowledge he had in hand.
"This year I wanted to try something else, however... You see, all the time I was changing, I was doing it solely thinking on a male's body…"
Lady Greengrass gasped as she was the first to catch up with where Delilah's story was heading to.
"The summer before school, I spent a lot of time at the local library, reading about female reproductive organs and, well..." she barely had to concentrate to switch into her (true) female form, as she did so, she let out a relieved sigh and everyone could see how a smile graced her face.
"The day Astoria found me was the first time I tried switching genders... It was... I can't really explain it..." she lost herself briefly in a daze, remembering the sensations that followed her first change, she shook her head, however, and decided to finish the story.
"Anyways, I was... inspecting the changes when Astoria snuck upon me…"
"I did not sneak on you, love... You were too focused on the mirror to realize I had entered the bathroom" Astoria's hair was a mess as she rejoined the table, mirth shining in her eyes, Delilah could only roll hers in response.
"It was Astoria the one that finally told me what I was, a metamorphmagus... After that well, we just became closer? Finally I had someone I could be honest with... We spent most of our free time together, either studying or practicing or... Anyway, It all came to a head the night of the..." Her smile immediately dimmed "We... We snuck into the library... we were looking for names for, well... me. Female names" She stood up and walked away from the table, turning towards them she did a curtsy and introduced herself "Pleased to meet you Lord Greengrass, Lady Greengrass, Heiress Greengrass, Lady Delilah Black at your service" and then proceeded to reclaim her seat.
The poor Greengrassi could not handle any more surprises that day. Not only was the Boy-Who-Lived dating their youngest daughter, he was also a metamorphmagus, 'he' apparently chose to be a 'she' and, if that wasn't enough and if she was to be believed, she was also the head of the Black family.
What a way to make first impressions.
Before Delilah could continue, Lady Greengrass signaled her to stop, calling for an elf and asking for a diluted dose of calming draught to be brought for her, her husband and her daughter.
"Sorry, dear, It's just... I don't think we can handle any more revelations tonight without help." The three Greengrass drank their draught with astonishing synchrony. Delilah immediately noticed as their faces relaxed and their postures lost tension.
She considered not telling them about the Chamber but discarded the idea, she had already told them most of her secrets anyway.
"After the whole... incident" she moved her hands around "I just wanted to be left alone, thankfully Astoria stuck to me like a leech on a wound and reminded me of the Chamber of Secrets..."
Lady Greengrass was prepared and asked for another shot of the diluted draught.
"You see, the bathroom Astoria initially found me in was the place I chose to practice in not only because no one uses it, but also because it hides the entrance to the Chamber... One of the sinks has a snake motif engraved on it, simply telling it to 'open' in Parseltongue reveals a massive tunnel that goes a good trek below Hogwarts..." She took Astoria's hand in hers "we spent the rest of the school-term together down there, practicing, learning, exploring the Chamber itself... I actually got a bunch of texts written by Salazar himself, they are written on a language only readable by Parselmouths, however."
"Bu... What about the beast!?" Daphne blurted out, despite the headmaster's efforts, rumors circulated quickly around Hogwarts, everybody knew that there was something dangerous on the Chamber, even if the were ignorant of its identity.
"Oh, that was just a Basilisk Delilah killed in her second year" Astoria supplied helpfully.
It was now Lord Greengrass the one that called for the elf.
In their minds, they could picture a young wizard fighting a Basilisk... Some people would be inclined to say impossible but they knew that, if the Basilisk was young enough, It was somewhat doable. No doubt being a Parselmouth helped him.
"I still don't know how I did it... at least 20 meters in length and quite mad... Its bite almost killed me... also pretty painful..." she mumbled, recalling the harrowing experience.
As it turns out, the Greengrass had their expectations blown out of the water once again. By that point, the dutiful house-elves had decided to just place a tray of potions on the middle of the table, no doubt expecting their masters to be continuously shocked for the reminder of the night.
"She killed it with a sword! Godric Gryffindor's sword, by the way. The corpse is pretty much intact down there..." Astoria gained a curious expression and turned to Delilah "You did ask Susan, didn't you?"
"The day before the term's end, yup" Delilah nodded "Hopefully I'll receive an owl from Amelia Bones soon."
"You know... Basilisk parts do sell for a lot of galleons... If... If it's as big as you say, it must have been pretty old too... The oldest Basilisk rendered and sold was around 350 years old and it made its killer pretty rich..." Daphne interjected, clearly the undiluted calming draught was doing wonders for their mental state.
"According to the records in the Chamber, the Basilsk was about 1000 years... It was the same Basilisk Salazar bred originally."
"Damn, Potter, you don't do anything by halves!" she exclaimed only to regret it when she saw Delilah flinch.
She spoke in a soft voice "Black... at least until Hogwarts... I... I don't like being Harry Potter..."
That certainly sobered everyone up.
"Oh... Oh... I'm so sorry Delilah, I... I never, I just... It's just, the whole world knows who you are, and... I mean... You're... Were Harry Potter..." Daphne stammered, trying to apologize.
"It's ok…"
It wasn't.
"Anyway" Delilah continued before the silence became longer, "year ended, I went back to my... relatives, I escaped them, again, and started living at the Leaky, I got a summons to Gringotts, got my deceased godfather's will read and... well, I became Lady Black... I was going to start reading through my family's business when Astoria ambushed and invited me here so... Yeah... That's all I guess?"
"Wow..." Daphne said, her eyes wide, "So, what happened to your family? I mean, you mentioned you escaped them... What did they do?"
"I... " She closed up once again, remembering how Vernon treated her.
'You are on a roll, Daphne... Why don't you just bring up his... HER parent's death too?' Daphne recriminated herself, the whole conversation being too much of a shock to her that she was being unnaturally inconsiderate.
Fortunately for everyone, Delilah soldiered on and threw them a small, genuine smile.
"They don't matter anymore... I'll.. I'll never go back there... And no one can force me!" her hair turned a shinier red with determination.
"Here, here!" Lord Greengrass drank to that! He and his wife would need to spend some time carefully dissecting that dinner's conversation but, from what he could garner so far, the young Lo-Lady dinning with them was truly remarkable. He had no doubts that his daughter was in capable hands.
"I... Sorry, I got carried away..." she apologized, her face turning a darker shade of red.
Lady Greengrass chuckled "No need my dear... Before we retire today, I believe we have a few questions for you... if you don't mind..." she said, looking at her husband.
He nodded, his face serious.
"I have a question for you, Lady Delilah, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
She took a deep breath "Well... I... I…"
She was interrupted by Lord Greengrass, who raised his hand "Don't answer yet, let her think about it"
"Thank you, sir..." she mumbled, taking another sip of her wine. Honestly she had no idea how to answer. A few months ago she could've easily said Quidditch player or some other such nonsense, things people expected of Harry Potter, but now?... Now…
"I don't know... I honestly don't know" she told them and she felt relieved saying it.
The questions kept coming for a while, Delilah answering as honestly as she could. It wasn't much later that everyone retired to their bedrooms.

"So... Black, huh?" Daphne asked awkwardly. She had followed Delilah to her room, noticing how the clothes she had unpacked earlier were female in nature.
She absently noticed the absence of her little sister.
Delilah nodded "Turns out being illegally imprisoned for 12 years does not make you relinquish your inheritance, even if you never knew about it." Not that the 'mot could have done anything else regardless. Ancient laws written by and for purebloods protected the wizarding families. To take one family's moneys would incur in the wrath of all the others.
What could have happened, however, was to transfer said assets to a next-of-kin. Certainly that was the main reason behind Sirius' kiss-on-sight order (there was no reason to suppose that an inmate that managed to evade the Dementors after being submitted to them daily for 12 years would eventually succumb to those same beasts). It would have worked perfectly, with Bellatrix imprisoned, Andromeda disowned and Regulus dead, Narcissa would be the one to inherit all the Black assets.
Malfoy gets money, Fudge gets money, Malfoy gets his way and earns more money, and so on and so on…
It ended blowing up in their faces, Lucius now had a permanent residence at Azkaban resorts, Draco was all but a joke to the rest of Hogwarts and Narcissa…
Well, no one new what happened to her. As far as Delilah new, Narcissa was quick to testify against Lucius in exchange for an immunity deal (it really helped that she never joined her convict husband on his 'hobbies'). With her and Draco, the Malfoy name still survived.
Delilah put all of that on the backburner, though, she was sure to learn more about the whole situation once Hogwarts started again (no one could beat the Hogwarts rumor mill. NO ONE.)
She snorted "Turns out there were also a plethora of marriage contracts... My account manager, sadist little shit that he is, took his time in telling me that I could cancel them all, not before also informing me that, as a metamorphmagus, I had satisfy the contracts both as a boy and as a girl."
Both girls shuddered.
"Yeah, that was a tough pill to swallow. I mean, I got used to living as a girl, I was comfortable with it... But the idea of going back to being a boy... I didn't want to, I just... couldn't."
"You are staying as a woman, then?"
"I would love to do so..." she sighed in defeat "But I can't... No one else knows I'm a metamorphmagus in the first place, can't just walk into Hogwarts and shout 'Guess what?! I'm a girl!'... as much as I'd like to do so…"
"So what? You are going to be Harry Potter for the next four years?!" Daphne asked incensed, she could see how strongly Delilah reacted when called Potter.
"Most likely, yes... It's not as if Delilah was a legal name, anyway…"
Daphne stopped cold, "It could be" she said slowly.
"What?"
"Your name, It could be Delilah... Legally…"
"Wh...bu... How?!"
Daphne started pacing the room. "Blood line matters are... finicky. Law was written in such a way that Family matters take precedence over ALL legal issues…
With you being the head of the Black family, you can welcome a new member to the family, even if said member had not technically existed before…"
"So... I, as Lord Black welcome myself as Delilah Black to the family?"
"Kind of? Harry Potter, Lord Black, would have to welcome Delilah to the family, thus becoming Delilah Black... I suppose then Lord Black could relinquish the headship to Delilah, making her Lady Black? You would need the help of someone up there in the Ministry to make it all official, however…"
"Amelia Bones" Delilah suddenly said "She's the director of the DMLE and Susan's aunt."
"She actually became the Minister just recently"
"Really?"
"Yeah, after the whole ICW fiasco and with most of the Ministry arrested, she was promptly sworn (literally) into office…"
"Hmm, think she will help?"
"She has been one of the few decent Ministry officials... And we are planning to do is, technically, legal…"
"Shite." Delilah cursed.
"What?!"
"Dumbledore... He's still the Chief Warlock, isn't he?"
"He's in hot water currently... Pettigrew had been hiding at Hogwarts as an animagus for the best part of the year, for several years, after all…"
"Right... and just before the end of term, I spoke with Susan and told her all about the Basilisk... Should've told her about the Philosopher's stone and Quirrelmort too... damn."
"…"
"Delilah…"
"Yes?"
"Explain. Now."
Delilah had a heavy feeling of deja vu as the following conversation became eerily reminiscent of the one she had at the Library.
It was going to be a long, long night. She just knew it.
