Severus Snape exited the castle through a secret door in the dungeons. His dark eyes scanned the skies for the raven that soared from the window of his chambers not 5 minutes ago. They were not, at that moment, the eyes of the widely reviled Potions Master, the eyes that held contempt, the eyes that seemed cold and lifeless. They were eyes that held a lifetime of self-loathing and pain. They were eyes that held the torment of the ages. They were eyes that were looking for something. She said she couldn’t give him redemption, but perhaps she could help him find his own salvation. For a moment, his dark ebony eyes held hope. Hope that he might have a future after this war. Hope that there might be someone out there who didn’t find him repulsive. At that though, the pain flickered back into his eyes. How would he find a raven in the darkening skies? How could he posy fiy find one raven amongst the legion of birds that the skies around Hogwarts held?
Severus walked to the lake and sat down on a boulder. Why was he forever sabotaging any chance he might have at future happiness? He wrapped his arms around himself to ward off the evening chill and gazed out at the calm surface of the lake. He was unaware of a black bird alighting on the ground behind him. The raven shimmered in the twilight and slowly took on the form of the tall, raven haired, fair skinned goddess Ariah. She bit her lower lip and wiped a tear from one vivid blue eye. Severus, she thought, why does this have to be such a battle? Without a word Ariah slowly approached Severus from behind and gently wrapped her arms around his trembling body. She rested her head on his shoulder and softly kissed his ear, whispering in it.
‘If you want me to leave you to your solitude, I will.’
‘I’ve been too long in my solitude.’ he replied.
‘I’ve always been with you, Severus.’
‘Will you be my savior?’ he asked.
‘Possibly. Will you be my downfall?’
‘Most likely.’ Severus responded.
‘Thought as much,’ she smiled wistfully.
Ariah moved quietly in front of Severus and pulled him to the carpet of grass below. She brushed a limp lock of hair out of his face and looked at him. Though he was not by any means classically handsome, even without the charm he used to slightly alter his appearance to his students (and as yet more self inflicted penance, she thought), in Ariah’s eyes, he was beautiful. She lifted a hand to his face and traced its contours. He was angles and planes, no softness really. His nose looked as though it had been broken so many times that he longer bothered with resetting it. Indeed, she had been there through many of his broken noses. His cheeks were slightly too gaunt, he really did need to eat a little more. His lips were surprising fuller and softer than she ever imagined them to be. She ran a thumb across his lips. What drew her back to his face again and again were his eyes, the mirrors of his soul. Never had she seen a soul more in need. His hunger was clear to her. He wanted her. But there was an undercurrent of self-doubt and flashes of self-hatred. Ariah locked onto his eyes and slowly moved her lips up to his, kissing him softly as she pulled his head closer to her.
‘Shhh,’ she said in a whisper, ‘just let us linger here a bit.’
Severus nodded and wrapped his arms around the goddess before him. He returned her kiss with a tenderness that surprised her. Silently they sat on the grass by the peaceful lake, the sun going to bed for the night, the moon beginning to rise, exploring each other’s faces with their hands and lips. Ariah moved her hands down Severus’ neck and across his chest. She remembered what his body looked like, surprisingly toned and well formed under those damned robes. Ariah stood up and held out her hand to Severus.
‘Come with me,’ she said, a smile playing about her face.
Severus took her hand and stood up, following Ariah in the silvery path of the low hanging moon to a small tree ringed clearing deeper in the forest. Ariah stood in the center of the clearing and stretched out her arms. Gone was the simple green dress she had been wearing. She was now clad in a flowing gown of what appeared to be silvery silk spun from moonbeams, a circlet of pure white flowers led led in her black hair. She was bathed in the silver of the moon, her face turned up to the night sky. Severus took in the sudden scent of night blooming jasmine. A small pond blossomed with water lilies. As he looked around the clearing, he saw the grass thicken and rise up in the center of the circle underneath Ariah. Strewn across the rise of grass were petals of flowers, flowers with scents that served to intoxicate. Severus took in the display of night blooming flowers that sprung up from the ground. Datura, he thought, I need more of that for my stores. And Oenothera fruticosa and pallida, vines of Ipomoea Alba twisting through non-native basswood trees, reullia noctiflora, and Zaluskianskya capensis’ He became aware of Ariah looking at him with a bemused expression.
‘What?’ he asked.
‘You’re thinking of how to collect some of these plants for your lab, aren’t you?’
‘Um’no.’ he fidgeted under her gaze.
‘Please,’ she said with a smile, ‘you are so transparent and such the potions master.’
‘OK, I was looking mostly at the Datura,’ he scowled slightly, ‘it would come in handy.’
‘Later, my grouchy love,’ she hopped off the rise of thick grass and again took his hand, leading him back to there. She pushed him down so he was sitting on what, to his amazement, felt like a bed of soft fragrant grass and flowers, ‘welcome to my world.’
Ariah silently unbuttoned his cloak and let it fall to the ground, ‘You won’t be needing this, it’s cozy in here.’
She pushed him back so he was lying on the grass bed and slowly unbuttoned his shirt, kissing her way down as his flesh was exposed. Ariah sighed and looked at his face for a moment, ‘I really do think you are the most beautiful man in existence, and yes, I DO get out.’ She noticed a slight smile appear on his face and returned it.
Ariah continued to undress Severus, kissing him and gently caressing his body as she did. When she was done, she gazed down at him with wonder and love in her eyes. This was the man she would give anything to be with forever. The gods weren’t against casual dalliances with mortals, but what she felt for Severus Snape transcended a mere dalliance. She wondered what her sacrifice would be, what price there would be for loving him. It didn’t matter. There wasn’t a price too great for him. She stepped back and let her gown drop to the ground, leaving her as bare as he was.
She stood there, bathed in moonlight, the sight leaving Severus breathless. He sat up and took her hands, pulling her to him.
‘You are so breathtaking,’ he whispered, ‘what did I do to deserve this?’
‘You exist,’ she replied, wrapping her arms around him and capturing his lips in a deep kiss, ‘you’re you. It doesn’t take any more than that, Sev.’Severus gently laid Ariah down and ran his hands over her body, barely touching her luminous skin. He touched her hair, her cheek, and her graceful neck. He kissed her gently, running his lips and tongue down to her neck. He lingered there, licking the hollow of her throat, causing her to moan softly. Severus smiled and moved further down her body, his hands paving the way for the fiery kisses that followed. He grazed his hand across her breasts, feeling her nipples harden in anticipation. Gods, he thought, she is amazing. He kissed each nipple before he chose one and gently took it into his mouth. Ariah arched her back and sighed. Severus caressed her nipple with his tongue, moving his hands lower on her body while he occupied his mouth with her beautiful breasts. He softly suckled as one hand reached the center of her being, stroking her open. She moaned again and whispered words of encouragement to him. His other hand toyed with her free nipple.
‘Severus,’ she sighed, ‘I want you so much.’
‘You have no idea what you do to me, Ariah.’ he replied in a husky voice, muffled by her left breast.
Ariah ran her hand down between their bodies and felt his hardness.
‘Oh, I think I do,’ she said with a smile, ‘make love to me Severus, I want to feel you inside me.’
Severus moved his body so he was poised at the entrance of her glistening center. He gently pushed himself in, slowly filling her. She moaned and moved to meet his slow thrust. With the same languid rate, he pulled back, then pushed in again. Ariah matched her movements with his and felt them join together as one. They coupled, bathed in moonlight, neither ever having felt the way they did in that moment. Severus felt clean for the first time in his memory, like he deserved to feel the immense joy that was in his heart. All he cared about was pleasing her. Making her as happy as he felt at that moment. And in only wanting to please her, her moon purified him. They matched each other’s rhythm, their breathing becoming more rapid. He felt her tense around him and with a shudder and a throaty moan she reached her climax. Hearing her was enough for him to follow suit. He lay on top of her, not wanting to withdraw completely, not wanting to break the connection of their bodies. Ariah clasped him tightly to her, kissing him deeply. With a sigh, he rolled over to give her some space to breathe. She wrapped her arms around him from behind and gently rubbed his chest and kissed his shoulder until he fell asleep under the moon, on the bed of grass and flowers that she created for him.
Sometime around midnight, Severus woke up, feeling Ariah’s arms around him, tightening as she felt him stir. He turned to look into Ariah’s eyes when he suddenly felt a sharp shooting pain in his arm. One hand clamped over the Dark Mark on his forearm and Ariah saw him grimace with pain.
‘Oh no—Voldemort?’ she said.
Severus nodded. He didn’t want to be called. Not tonight. Not after making love to Ariah. Not when he was actually happy. Not when he could see the future. But called he was: strongly and forcefully.
‘I have to—’
‘I understand. Go,’ she said, taking a deep breath, ‘you can’t make him more suspicious than he already is. You can apparate from here, it’s not actually part of Hogwarts right now, it’s my realm.’ And you will NOT be alone, she thought, Voldemort will NOT take you from me.
She watched with tears in her eyes as he quickly dressed and disappeared from the clearing. Ariah’s human form shimmered and transformed into the raven and took off into the sky, following the energy trail of the man she was destined to love, at any price.
*A/N: the song ‘Downfall’ by matchbox twenty inspired some of the conversation in this chapter. I wrote the scene that takes place in Ariah’s clearing while listening to the song ‘Cailles Whisper’ by David Arkenstone. I usually don’t get so inspired by music that I feel the need to comment on it, but in this case, I did. Thank you so much those who reviewed. It’s nice to know that people are reading and enjoying my words.*
